- Опубликовано: 15 авг 2024
- FULL RESULTS, ALL POWER ADDERS! Nitrous, 6/71 supercharger, Procharger Centrifugal Supercharger and Twin Turbos- We tested them All on a BPE Power Adder 540 BBC Stroker. Blue Print Engines offered up a 540 Power Adder Crate motor so we could run 4 different power adders. We started with a 250-hp nitrous shot, then ran a dual-quad, 6/71 blower, then a Procharger F1A-94, then twin S475 turbos.
Richard is an absolute legend
LEGANDDDDDDDD!!!
Blueprint has had me sold before seeing this. But you and these runs puts it in the bag!! You should get a percentage lol. Great video
the torque on that turbo setup was crazy. close to 1300lb-ft of torque to go with your 1300hp.
CI = torque.
OH MY GOD!! Richard, you are my HERO !! holy crap, do you ever sleep? you do more in a week than I've done my entire life ! Keep the AWESOME videos coming.. THANK YOU !
You should overlay all four final dyno graphs to show the differences between the power of each combination.
And at the same boost numbers
For the absolute cool factor, and the on tap power, the 6-71/8-71 would be my choice. I wouldn't care if it made the least power, it just looks cool AF!
I agree
Yea a sbc 350 671 blowaa
@MajorLeague 10L ???
@MajorLeague ok. Wow 736 blower would be a big 1. Something like a 10-71
@MajorLeague only thing in liters I know is 3.64 is a gallon
Can you please turn off the lights In the dyno room sometimes so we can watch the flames?!!
4GsRacing this would be awesome
that 540 BBC with a 6-71 would look bad ass sticking threw the hood on my second gen Camaro. there is nothing that screams horsepower like a BBC with a roots supercharger. I would have also liked to have seen it with a tunnel ram, twin Holley's 750's and a 500 HP shot of NOS.
Reading your articles back in the day I always had David Freiburgers voice in my head. Glad to finally see a bunch of these tests come to video where I can enjoy it all again and watch cool things. Thank you very much sir. Was a big reader back in the day and already know the outcome of alot of your old tests. Good good stuff. Love watching it all again.
I paid in full for a 540 power adder from Blue Print Engine and they said late June to mid July. Happy waiting and first time I didn't build my own engine. Parts are hard to get and crazy expensive so it was a no brainer!😀😀😀🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 May be now I can tell everyone it is a 396...lol.
Just crazy to me that the 496 you did this same testing with made 1144hp on just 11 psi where this massive 540 fell well short of that at the same boost level 🤔 BUT I’ve heard several big block guys say that out of a 468, 496, 502, and 572 (basically anything under the 632) they’d choose the 496 cuz they just rip for whatever reason 🤷🏻♂️ That’s why I chose to build mine and I’m extremely happy that I did thus far sir👌🏼
the boosted power is just a function of the na power and the amount of boost-a 496 doesn't make more than a larger motor
Perfect. Building one right now. Thinking Turbos
I love that brute low end torque the turbo's gave.
Wow!! Doubled the HP output!! Great motor! Kudos on the testing!!
Only bad thing about the turbos is it stopped making flames!
Those flames were feeding the turbine.
this video and the dyno graphs make a nice reminding proof for turbos dominace over other power adders
Eh, considering he was using a undersized roots blower with about 6 PSI less of boost, and the SINGLE procharger wasn't making as much boost either. On a level playing field all of those options would come in similar, with their own pros and cons. I would say a big thing I've noticed on the track, between boosted 4000whp funny cars, the supercharged cars would lay down power too fast causing wheel spin in adverse/hot track conditions. where as a turbo-ed car would have the advantage of spool up lag.
Twin turbos with nitrous to keep them boys spooled up. Love me some big block power!
nothing beats the look of a big blower sticking out of the hood. 8 or even a 12-71 for me
Why stop there... 14-71 PSI blower.
18-71 is even bigger
@@RadDadisRad who makes a 18-71? I've never seen one.
@@DodgyBrothersEngineering that's pro comp drag race. They are around 17k each. How many do you want
@@davidcunningham00 14-71 are long enough, how far into the drivers compartment do 18-71's intrude?
Love me some bbc nitrous pump gas engines. Your videos are great!
Great video Richard and a great motor for any application. Thanks for sharing.
outstanding I hope they give you a 632 power adder crate engine to test since those are hydraulic and more street friendly motors
Fun stuff! Turbos RULE! All the turbo curves were still climbing... 1500+ easy with more boost.
Loved it! I'm deciding what to go with for my 74 Vette restomod. Thinking about the blueprint power adder engine but the small block version lol. Topping it off with a 250 shot of nitrous. It seems that these engines can handle it, although I have not spoken to blueprint themselves yet.
Man that a lot of belt slap on the 6/71 deal, but for a good built 6-71 that's all
A guy would realistically need for a streetcar
yeah you couldn't get any more down to the ground on the street
I don't know what transmission you put behind something like this. A fully build 400 or 'glide will take the abuse for a little while. street driving does all kinds of cruel things to a transmission that 9 seconds on a dragstrip does not.
@@timothybayliss6680 a 8l90e would take it all day
Good comparisons on 4 styles of power adders on a crate big block
I love seeing the purple blue flames coming out the header extensions !!
Perfect video sir! It’s like watching Bill Nye the science guy for engine builds! The sound clips hit in all the right spots! Good stuff! I’m locked in for the learnings!
You know someone is serious about getting the absolute most power when they start pulling oil out of the pan to reduce windage loss. I love boost absolutely love how you can take a capable engine and turn it into an absolute monster. We've got a mid 90's Crown Vic and I'm seriously considering building a twin turbo 351 or 393 and dropping it in there with a built AOD behind it. Would make one hell of a sleeper.
This was absolutely awesome.
Have a boosted big block and watching this test makes my nipples harder than diamonds , yes that Is possible with a good BBC . Thanks again Richard . Travis quit messing with your mini van engine and get back to your big block . A previous commenter has a great point about shiny roots sticking out of the hood but a twin turbo sleeper with a flat hood is also cool .
Nice job building up those big blocks
The roots style blowers are awesome, along with the centrifical style. But don't forget to tell the viewers about belt slap and it's effects on bearing wear over time.
That's where that 3yr warranty comes in :-)
I always liked the centrifugal supercharger's smooth power curve.
Hey Richard, really enjoy your videos of the other guys. Now that you've gone big cubes, could you maybe consider going small? Like the smallest big block? Like Reher-Morrison-Shepherd legendary 360 (348 Crank in 454 marine block) be kinda cool to see a 10k RPM capable BBC on a test stand. Keep up the good work~ and thank you!
Damn, I need that kind of motor in the Ford flavor.
Absolutely. On power nation Kaase built a big block Ford stroker that NA went over 1100 hp. The PN guys were all sad because the smaller Ford made more power than there 632 NA Chevy.
I know its low compression but it's crazy how a cam intake LS7 can match the N/A output of this big block and probably weigh half as much
Mabey peak HP numbers. The torque curve and where it makes power/torque is the big difference. 1/2 the weight is no joke tho lol
It only costs twice as much, too. And you could get an aluminum block 540 and save some weight, too.
I agree with you I love the ls but only for under two thousand horsepower once you get 2000 3000 3500 much easier without 5:40
Even a 6 liter LS can't begin to match the torque curve. Having to rev your engine to 8000 rpm just to pull away from a stoplight, makes you look like a sissy. A big block guy will come along and take your candy and your girl.
Can't match big block torque!!! LS's are very good... but no match when it comes to torque. ... especially at part throttle. That's the thing that Dyno figures don't show. It's only WOT. Big blocks at 632ci shred tires at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. Without breaking a sweat!
Torque curve on the 671 vs ProCharger vs turbo?
With such a big engine I would've thought you'd put an 8/71 on it
steven hall At least a 10/71. 540ci is a lot of air to flow. But the dyno chart does actually say 8/71. I’m wondering if he read it wrong.
Did you keep the same 30* on the twins as well as the procharger
In the video he says it is a 6-71 but the data sheets say 8-71. At the end of the video he says if he was doing it he would have stepped up to a 8-71 instead of the 6-71. I think the fumes got to him...lol
Would like to see a 10-71 on it!
Another great video! Thank you Richard.
B interesting to make this a big bang motor... what does it take 2 hurt a forged professional engine... 🤔😂😂👍👍
A Big Buck Big Bang motor!
A dyno that will hold more power lol
Yes please! 👍👍👍
I have a feeling this thing would take a ton. I imagine nothing tested in this can hurt it. What I think would eventually be the downfall would be main cap walk. I don't know when that would happen, but that would probably be.the weak link. A pair of s480 turbos and e85 or methanol just to keep the heat in the piston a little more manageable and this piece would probably pass 2k hp for a season of racing. Your going to start to run into bore distortion and and really stressing the mains but eventually your going to have to firering the heads or deck to keep the gaskets in. All kinds of different things start to break when things get crazy like this. Piston pins start to bend. Rods bend. Cranks bend. If you could keep the head gaskets intact you could probably pass 3k hp with enough boost and methanol for one run. Even basic stuff starts to be a problem like spark getting blown out and having enough fuel pump. What I think would cause it to fail would be the main caps walking and pinching the bearings or the crank twisting enough to kiss the bearings. I would like to see it even if it kind of a waste to see a built piece turned to scrap.
Blueprint & Enquiring minds need to know! Come on give it the beans 😆😂🤣
That's a monster
thanks richard im trying to fix my 03 mustang gt just dont have the cash to get any boost but i love your videos and have been watching along time thank you your the best
Really cool comparison. Not fair for the nitrous combo could have had the motor at 10 to 1 at least and sprayed 350.
In my opinion nitrous best bang for buck, cheapest, quickest onset of power
671 coolest and procharger/ turbo most ultimate power
but the question is would you trust this engine in a race car 🏎
Hi Rich. Great work. A+++
Why choose. Run it Twincharged, with 2 big turbo's blowing though a twinscrew/intercooled blower😁
With a 3000 shot of nitrous for The scramble button - edited
300 shot? That’s some baby bracket car kit. Go big or go home. They make 5000hp kits.
@@RadDadisRad I changed it lol
Turbo is the best of everything turn boost down when you cruising and turn it up at the track
That's very similar to my dart block 540, but I have AFR 357's and a bigger roots blower with dominator efi
Be nice to see you set up 2 engines with same parts but drastically different compression ratios
Awesome test, really nice comparison of different power adders. Agree that an 871 would have been a better representation. Why, though, are you not revving this thing out? It looks like we didn't even see the peak on many of these pulls.
it would have been cool and eye opening if it had been spun to 7k
Travis Pfannmuller they do that a lot , just stop the run before the power even starts to fall off it’s kind of disappointing . I love this channel tho lol
My wife likes to stop before I finish too.
I said the same thing. I think 7000 would have been perfect. Seemed like it had the valve train to do it. It looked like it wanted to keep going.
Probably would have floated the valves.
hydraulic roller big blocks don't really like 6500rpm and above :/
2500+fhp from a well built 540cid bbc seems to be a very popular bore and stroke by engine builders supporting power adders. With 555s, 565s, 582s,598s,615s, and 632s all being viable big block builds, does the 540 offer unique benefits and/or cost savings?
nothing unique about the 540
The boost from the N2O cost far less than any forced induction. The extra 100 to 200 HP that the forced induction setups add cost HOW MUCH? The torque flattened out and peaked later with forced induction. No surprise there. I'll take the laughing gas version and make due.
Free power is free power as always
I think, turbo boost gets you more power to the wheels for a given boost pressure lol
Great job!
I’d love to see you test any of Jon Kaase’s stuff. He’s at the leading edge of “street” orientated big block Ford stuff.
Bad ass big block!!!!
Love watching your videos and enjoy your work. I would like to make a suggestion though. Can you gather all your data prior to sitting down in front of the camera and recording? It's kind of a drag having these dead spots in the vid watching you click around looking for specific files or data points.
Great video!! What size injectors did you use on the Vic Jr? Any idea on duty cycle with that particular size? And fuel pressure? Ty!!
Nice
I would of liked to see a nitrous shot put before the intercooler then tuned for it and even if it didn’t make a lot more show temperatures of intercooler with a 100 shot going thru it and it might only be a50 shot at throttle body but would allow for longer runs or back to back with less efficiency loss
100 hp shot changes the charge temp very little on a 1000 hp motor
These are awesome videos.
I need help to decide what to do on my c3 corvette . maybe you can do a bbc 454 with a 871 blower with carbs
and a pro charger with carbs so i can decide.. thank you
Richard, I'm curious what the reason for not running the Turbo and Procharger combos out to 6500 RPM was? Was this for longevity? It seems like on the Procharger before the pulley swap that it had at least another 100 HP in it with more RPM. Love the BBC combinations you run on here. Thanks for sharing!
You didn't mention the fuel you used in reach combination
So, turbos ruled the roost as usual... lol
Big Bang the built bbc! Richard next to try and test the difference between a rear mount turbo or normal install, that be interesting to see the difference.
Who is not liking this ??? I am trying to work out how I can afford a drive line for these power levels or even at close to these levels
it would be neat if you could borrow a really big motor (~900-1000 cubes ) from someone like Sonny Leonard for some testing.
Richard would end up with busted ass dyno lol 😆
Love all the testing!... But honestly, rev them out till we see the curve dip even just a bit and I for one will be happy!.. Otherwise we just gotta guess and that’s frustrating.
I like thhis video¡¡..
Hi Richard, your videos have really help me decide my sbc 350 build. I was just wandering if you have done any test combining boost and nitrous. I'm in the middle of getting parts for my build I would love to get an idea where my limits are.
TAKE A LOOK AT THE NITROUS AS INTERCOOLER LS VIDEO
Hell yeah im turbo all the way for sure
I was going to say the same thing about the roots blower... it was too small. Should have used an 8-71 or even a 10-71.
Hey Richard, (say with good tuning of course) how much nitrous do you think the Blueprint power added 540 or 632 could handle consistently? I seen where it handled 1300hp with turbos, but I didn't know if those numbers would transfer to nitrous the same way. 500+ shot? Thank you for any feedback
less with nitrous

gotta love turbos
I Really liked this video 😁.I absolutely think ud need a REAL BLOWER if ur gona play against Prochargers & T-Turbos tho..A 6:71 w/a regular cast 60degree rotor combo😳.How abt Atleast 8:71 Hi-Helix? I doubt Hp wise it would out do T-Turbos But it would be alot closer..This should be done using equal PSI, Maybe All set at 15lbs of boost & see what uve got then? I run Blowers mostly bcz they look amazing but I NO these newer designed systems like Procharger will probably make more power..I loved this test & Im absolutely not knocking you at all, Im just throwing in my 2 cents bcz I have some knowledge abt these Blown Combos but I Never Think I No Better Then A Pro Like Urself! I juzt want 2B clear abt this..I DO get what u were saying abt the newer technology in Roots Blowers Now..I went from HH 14:71 Kobelco to Flower Extreme bcz of the drastic difference in design..Just bolting tht thing onto the engine in place of Kobelco which was NOT A Superman design with set-back rotors And the Flower Is & thats besides the different shoe inserts you can place on top case Or even change the top to different inlet design which IS kinda cool..I also listened to this 1 Thing You Said which was abt Whipple Chargers using 160degree twist in rotors..I wondered If it would be possible to have Billet 160degree twist rotors made for 14:71? I would thing that mite w/all the case modifications now even compete w/a PSI Screw Blower? I Do realize thers No rotor Teflon Stripes in PSI so thers less drag on PSI but even still would have 2B very close w/a twist so Twisted😂.Id be curious to know what Ud think? If you ever need any blowers like I have Id have no problem lending them out to you Bcz I dont really go racing anymore these days Especially living in terrible NY state on Long Island, a place where drag stripes dont exist anymore And Not bcz people dont have money to put up track either, Always Democrats & There Bullshit!.They deny EVERYTHING here, Always A Reason which is usually based on afew residents which do NOT represent the masses, Not Ever Here! So I have this stuff just sitting & I buy newer stuff pretending Ill travel somewhere 2a track But they raised TOLLS So High It costs abt $250buks b4 Ive got to track, Discusting! They charge almost $100bucks for our '45ft Prevost & thats W/O Trailer!😮.They charge $20 an axle So terrible here, I have these things & I just wont sell ad the wife wants me to, I just can't bcz then ITS DONE! Let me know when/if you can abt what u think abt superchargers & using better rotors bcz boost was way off from the others by alot & it was bcz of regular 6:71 going up against modern blowers, it cant, So please maybe 10:71 next time🤣🤣🤣
The 496 you did with all thes blowers was way better if my memory is correct.
Would be cool to see a test of an engine and then gap the rings for boost and run on dyno again. See if the increased gap looses any power
it doesn't
Which turbine AR housing was used? Have you tried a pair of S472 or S476 on a 540? I am looking to upgrade my blown 540 with twin turbos and can't choose which ones. I wish the dyno pull started lower to show the turbos response.
1k HP is about all you need on the street! 600- 1000 HP grocery getter!
2k hp is even more fun, ask the Twin Turbo Lamborghini guys. Some are even in the 3500hp range.
Aye man someone told me that forged pistons are no good in daily drivers because they contract so much while cold and wear the bore ? Is this true or bs?
that is BS
Just let them warm up a minute before you beat on them.
@@fascistpedant758 I NEVER beat on cold engine feels so wrong
Depend s on what alloy there are
most forged race piston have a lower silicone content and expand more so a looser bore is
a must and more street oriented forged performance pistons have a higher silicone content expand less so a tighter bore is usually needed less piston slap ware etc. Not all forged pistons
are equal research the manufacturer s web sites to help
pick the right ones for your application. 👍
Big Bang BBC???
how low is low compression? i run a destoked 454 to 427 @ 7:1 and hit it with 16lbs from a dyers 8/71.
that's pretty low
@@richardholdener1727 But it makes 400lbs @ 2K rpm and 550 hp at wheels in 78 Camaro, and to be honest,, I dont really want to go any faster. shit happens quick!
F2 should be a minimum on that 540.
Thumbs up as always, did I miss where you usually give us cam specs and cylinder head model and static compression ratio?
Richard, what do you think is a realistic reliable power cap on this combo keeping it below 6500? How does there warranty work with a deal like this? I mean if I was to add boost and make 2k which is very realistic with such would they warranty it? Thanks
Still amazes me that you built a iron headed 460 that makes 40 less hp N/A than this 540
So was it an 8-71 or a 6-71? The notes say 8-71...the opening shot says 6-71 and you mentioned wanting an 8-71 instead of a 6-71? And how much timing did you run on the turbo setup? Cool stuff...really enjoy it!
How goes it today
From the notes it looks as if you lowered the oil level while testing. Oil pressure issues? 6 quarts the final amount?
BBCs are very sensitive to oil level on the dyno and most pans recommend too much capacity
A bigger roots would of been better like a 10-71 -14-71 stripped at 20lbs would made it happy on e85 keep them coming
That's one Badass Rat.....
