Who's the GOAT is very hard to determine since there are so many different styles and techniques to be proficient at. It's an extremely subjective matter of discussion. Therefore Les is not the GOAT, however, he is an amazing bass player with a very defined unique sound. Truly amazing.

Yah man, this was early-90s. Les Claypool is one of the gods of avant-garde bass playing. That 6-string fretless is a unique custom-made instrument, see also “Jerry was a Race Car Driver” for fretboard tapping madness

Les Claypool tends to mute a lot, almost using the bass like a percussive instrument at times.
I've been a Primus (Pry-mus) fan since '92 and would have seen them my 30th time this summer if not for COVID. If you want them to blow your mind, you should react to Fish On (the Fisherman's Chronicles pt II). His bass is a custom fretless 6-string made by Carl Thompson, dubbed The Rainbow Bass.

Les Claypool is pretty well known for having a more midrange sound on his bass and using Piccolo pickups. If you want to hear him digging deep into the low end listen to My Name its Mud.
Les' signature bass is indeed a six string. However, Les' talents do not end there. he is a multi instrumentalist including and not limited to drums, percussion, upright bass, guitar, and many others. And for future reference the band is called Pr-eye-mus. This song was written in the early 90's.
Primus is the only band that had it's own separate genre in mp3 id tags, and it's earned

Les also has other projects to check out including: Sausage, Les Claypool and the flying frog brigade, Highball with the devil(one of my personal favs) and so many more. He even tried out for Metallica after Burton died(I believe) before forming Primus But they told him he was "too wild" for their sound LOL!

They came out with a remixed version of the album this is on Sailing The Seas of Cheese and they turned the bass up in the new mix. This video is the original mix.
When you hear that bass sound, that's Les. That's why he stands out.
6 string flatwounds on a fretless
1991 I think. Things weren't mixed with as much bass back then. They punched it up on later recordings. Check out Laquerhead or My Friend Fats.

I love, LOVE Primus! It's funny, cuz you either love Primus are you hate them. It's always been polarizing. Years ago, they had a billboard on the west side of Manhattan, it was to promote their new upcoming album. And the billboard simply stated that: "If you hated Primus before Oh, you probably still will." And underneath that was the members of Primus dressed as penguins. Epic. At the beginning of every live Primus concert, the crowd always cheers, maniacally and wildly: "PRIMUS SUCKS, PRIMUS SUCKS!!!!" Over and over until Primus takes the stage. Upon which Les Claypool announces to the crowd: "Good evening everyone, we are Primus, and yes we suck!!" It's just the kind of warped inside sense of humor they share with their fans. When they are on point, they are at their best oh, you won't see anything like it. Les Claypool on bass and either one of their drummers, they're both amazing in their own way, are sick. And topped by the controlled chaos emanating from Larry Lalonde's Guitar.
Les also has the single string bass. But yes, he’s the Goat!
