- Unity and division are topics that are both timely and contentious all around the world right now. In an era where politicians foment and capitalise on divisive events and topics, we need more than ever an understanding of why we believe the things we believe.
Andrew Judd takes us on his personal journey of questioning his long-held beliefs and the attitudes that surround him. Serving on the District Council for New Plymouth, and eventually as Mayor, Andrew was finally put in a position to act as a bridge between the indigenous Maori constituents of his district and the white European majority. But the work he embarked upon had to start with himself and his own attitudes and prejudices.

This talk was part of TEDxRuakura 2017 Landing in a position of power and thrust into the public eye, not many people manage to stay true to their word, beliefs and values when the pressure comes on. The temptation to say and do what’s popular instead of what you believe in is strong. Andrew Judd knows only too well this battle. Having served nine years at New Plymouth District Council with the last three of those as Mayor, forced him to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask some hard questions. Today, after this journey into self-awareness, he stands for justice and peace and continues to challenge systems that marginalise and isolate. Andrew has been a voice against the historic sin made by the early settlers. But all immigrants have to be held responsible, knowingly or unknowingly, for the continuance of economic and cultural disaster in Maoriland.

@The505Guys Its inaccurate as by definition not all non maori are immigrants. So you would need to clarify who is responsible if a statement like that is made.
@The505Guys That logic is not only inaccurate, its divisive. The desire here is to have a group of people (pakeha) to work with Maori to achieve better outcomes and start by referring to them as immigrants, when the vast majority of these people are born and breed New Zealanders. Not a good way to start what could be a positive discussion.

Social cohesion is going to get worse, especially as critical race theory is taught in schools. I am in the top 1% so I will be OK but i still dont like to see it happening. Ironically I have experienced far more racism as a white man living in Thailand than Maori ever have living in current day New Zealand. Its systematic AF over there.

If people wish to discuss Australia’s and New Zealand’s past, they have an obligation to do so honestly.
The blacks who were living there when Europeans arrived were not the first group to inhabit those areas. And the truth is not even a secret.
Anthropologists will gladly tell you that a race of very small bushmen originally lived in Australia and New Zealand. Then larger blacks arrived, and murdered the bushmen. Those invaders are the blacks living in Australia and New Zealand today.
The historical record is very clear about this. But the truth is suppressed because governments base their taxes and moral authority on the expense of “protecting” oppressed people. The aborigines are not innocent, or oppressed, or aboriginal. They qualify for nothing.
And the governments of New Zealand and Australia have no right to tax working people in order to favor certain groups. That’s illegal. The entire “oppressed aborigine” story is fake. Just like the “oppressed American Indian” story.
No government has the right to redistribute income. Taxation without representation is a crime. The all-inclusive tax rate in New Zealand should be ten percent. That includes sales tax, income tax, property tax, and inflation of the currency. Put it on a ballot,and let the people of New Zealand decide.

Ahhh...the Maori wouldn't have become "extinct", as they had a stable healthy population number, not a decreasing one. However...the French would have colonised the country, and by looking at other French colonies of the era, that would have been greater disaster.
