This was a wonderful performance by the hr-Sinfonieorchester - Frankfurt Radio Symphony under the inspired direction of Maestro Jader Bignamini. What an amazing discovery!
Pejačević is considered a major Croatian composer. She left behind a considerable catalogue of 58 opuses (106 compositions), mostly in late Romantic style, including songs, piano works, chamber music, and several compositions for large orchestra, arguably her best. Her Symphony in F-sharp minor is considered by scholars the first modern symphony in Croatian music. Most of her music has yet to be published and released on compact disc, although concerted efforts have been made recently to rectify this situation.(Wikipedia).
Hard to believe this great work was only recorded previously once. Thanks hr-Sinfonieorchester, for making my day. Dora finally done justice by a great orchestra!
A tremendous symphony. I find discussions about influences and the composer's musical language beside the point. All composers build on what came before and whatever the musical language (and Pejačević's is no more conservative than that of Elgar or Rachmaninov whose symphonies date from the same period - in some respects less so), what is important is whether that language and those influences are mastered and assimilated into a distintive musical voice. This strikes me as patently and triumphantly the case here. I would add that Pejačević wrote this symphony when she was 32 years old and that she died aged just 37.
∙(trad. by G....E)
Would have been even longer until I discovered this composer if weren't for this channel. Thank you! Definitely going to listen to more of her music now! 🎶
Rare to have female composer in those times unlike toda, where we aslo have more female solist than before. This is Dora Pejačević a greate symhpony Dora Pejačević.
I watched this when it was livestreamed in early march while on vacation, and I stayed up late watching the whole thing. This is one of the most amazing performances I have ever seen, and I personally LOVE the 4th movement the best!
What a beautiful music. It's unbelievable that we know absolutely nothing about it, I should have some for my delight. Many Thanks for this great summer pleasure.
You might like some of the music available on my channel as well. There is quite a wide variety especially from the end of late Romanticism, including Pejačević's two violin sonatas.
Thanks for this beautiful masterpiece by a female composer! I have listened to many female composers' works, and I believe Dora's command of orchestral composition is frankly en par or even better than some male composers of her time, IMO. Too sad that she had to die prematurely!
I am listening to this for the first time and it is certainly very pleasant on the ear, but I'm finding it difficult to discern the structure of the work. It breaks no new ground harmonically and it repeatedly seems to promise development but just when it seems to be heading towards developing its themes, pulls back and more or less repeats itself. So I will continue to enjoying it for what it is along with a sense of frustration for what it might have been. Or for not seeing what is actully there after all. The audience certainly enjoyed it, so perhaps it's me after all -- it's just that I look for at least more adventurous harmony in what I gather is a 20th century work.
Lovely stuff. Pretty old-fashioned for when it was written, but that doesn’t matter now. Dvorakish and surprisingly for this date I can’t hear much (if any ) Wagner influence. Though of course it was a lot harder to get to hear stuff.
i´m so happy that the most famous female composer from my country is worldwide played
I think she is not only the most famous female Croatian composer but the most famous Croatian composer altogether.

What an interesting piece. You can just imagine how thrilled Dora would have been to hear this marvelous performance. Her star is on the rise.
Symphony in F-sharp minor for large orchestra, Op. 41 (1916 - 1917, rev. 1920; dedicated to her mother baroness Lilla Vay de Vaya).

Wonderful that hr is bringing back to life this forgotten composer! More, please!
Maestro Bignamini, great job doing all this from memory. Also, he carries character of Maestro Metah.
Yes! Thank you so much for showcasing lesser known composers!

Thanks for the upload I like to investigate works from the 20th c (not avant garde) that are seldom performed.

Beau compromis entre R. Strauss, Mahler, trop beau
have you guys ever thought about playing any Raff symphonies

I like the orchestra, but can understand why this is not popular music.
?
What kind of contrabassoon that used in here?
I'm pretty sure it's a kronwalt
I believe the timpanist is American born with a Jewish name?
