    Had this job just last week on an ETec. Actually had a blockage in the VST but not enough to stop the tell tale or even slow it enough to feel hot when running. I think what happened in this scenario is that the overheat warning was not a true 'hot engine' warning but a 'ECM overtemp' warning caused by the water flow slowing down enough to heat the ECM. If you have analogue gauges you only get a red light/audible alarm but if you have i-Command digital gauges I believe it will indicate a hot ECM as well as a true overheat situation

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 лет назад +1

      This outboard is quite old and had the old analogue gauges so I can't be 100% sure what type of overheat it was but it seems to have stopped happening now which is good. I really must look into some type of scanner like the one we have for cars to help get to the bottom of these types of error code.

    Nice tip Stu. I never thought there could be this much plumbing just for a telltale! My Evinrude 48 SPL has no computers or VRO it's as simple as you can get. Now my Yamaha 150 is a whole different story!

    Your videos are brilliant. I have a 175 etec over heating. The pipe going through the ecu has no water flow at all cold or warm it’s connected to the thermostats. I have removed the thermostats and ran until I get the overheat light but no water comes out the thermostat housing. Should water flow in or out the thermostats?

No sign of blockage. I put thermostats in pan if water and they opened before 150 degrees F. Now I'm trying to locate the temperature sensor. Anything else I should check?

  • @ronpowell2373
    @ronpowell2373 7 лет назад +1

    I wonder if the water going through the ECU is also checked for flow? So if your cooling water is not present after a minute or two the engine goes into limp home or shut down mode? There is not much in an ECU that needs cooling normally (it would be crazy not to build them to car standards, and the car ones are 85deg C operation rated) , maybe the voltage regs and the coil FETS, but using FETs as switches usually means almost no heat at all.
    But what a convulated pipe path, lots of connections to leak or mix up!

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 лет назад +1

      Agree Ron, I don't see how every other engine management system in the world manages to get away without being water cooled. The potential for blockages and leaks is huge with this outboard.

    • @martinandersson5278
      @martinandersson5278 7 лет назад

      Dangar Marine well on a lot of Diesel engines the use the fuel to cool down the ECU. For an example an Bosch EDC7 draws 35amps that 820W to cool of. The drive steps to the injectors uses quite a lot of power

    • @ronpowell2373
      @ronpowell2373 7 лет назад

      The injector power is included in the ECU`s power rating, but of course the power is dissipated at the injectors, not in the ECU itself. But fuel cools the injectors of course. But I don't disagree that the multiphase injection scheme used for modern diesel engines , and increasingly the direct injection petrol engines means hotter running ECUs. They could use bigger heatsinks and just airflow for a far simpler solution, but that means using more aluminium or copper, and therefore cost. Weight is not a consideration or else the seat motors, window motors , 25 cup holders and 35 airbags could all be eliminated .

    • @robbyg1311
      @robbyg1311 7 лет назад

      Its an inch from the engine block and 4 inches from the exhaust manifold...Using vents and fins isn't sufficient because of heat transfer(thermodynamics) and space limitations. mechanics 101 here boys 😂

    What about the fitting in the middle of the vapor separator. I bought my motor used and when it was shipped to me there is a crack in the plastic where the middle fitting vertically toward the outside of the canister is located. I pulled the hose off and it was all rusty inside. I went to blow on it and it taste like salt water. Now I have put it in the water and started it, and it leaks out water through the crack. I was just going to remove the fitting and try epoxy instead of buying a new vapor separator.

    For some reason (after the dealer changed the impeller and gasket) I cannot get water from the telltale unless I run it in a barrel of water?? What could be the cause of this? I have plenty of water pressure and new water cups to connect hose

  • @roberthickman4092
    @roberthickman4092 7 лет назад

    The water contains some particulate matter and the small pipes are going to get blocked. Relying on the tell tale for ECU cooling is a bad idea. Wander if any have been fried because of a blockage.

    • @DangarMarine

  • @fleetwin1
    @fleetwin1 7 лет назад +1

    Yeah, the cooling system on these engines is really complicated, and a bit over engineered for sure....It is important to keep that system clean to avoid setting ECU overheat codes and damaging the ECU. This cooling system must be properly drained to avoid freeze damage to these components as well. Running one of these engines through sand or mud really creates some cooling nightmares!

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 лет назад

      Although it never gets freezing here, it isn't hard to imagine the damage that could do. This one was overheating because it had been run through mud, it was quite blocked up.

    I guess this would also be the reason why some outboards take a while after starting to get a stream from the tell tale compared to outboards of yesteryear? My old 1983 johno would shoot a pee stream almost instantly after starting, but the newer df140 takes a fewer more seconds (10-20secs i think) to start peeing. Thanks for the short and informative vid Stu :)

      Must be the same engineers that decided the spark plugs have to face a certain direction to work properly! ;)

    • @zhillic
      @zhillic 7 лет назад

      Dangar Marine True! It's quite a pain to line up the sparkplugs if you get unlucky and almost none fit correctly.
      Guess two stroke injection engines need alot of electronics to pass emissions

    • @peterjensen6844
      @peterjensen6844 7 лет назад

      Those same engineers are the ones who make cars that require you to remove the tire to change a battery....

    • @nathansdad04
      @nathansdad04 7 лет назад +1

      Def quite a circuitous route for water to traveI. I would guess that the internal electronics within the ECU are potted in epoxy....so water isn't going to affect them. The biggest prob is see with the design...is that it's prob prone to clogging easily, should debris be sucked up into the motor. This is esp true for those who powerload their boats at the launch.

    Well ours is weird were getting over heat warning even with full water flow. We have an e-etc 150. Doesn’t always do it. It stumped the dealer. Runs great and fuel efficient that part is great. How ever why the over heat tone comes up after being on plane for a bit. Being in cooler weather still water temp is in the upper sixties. We don’t run her hard just around 3100 rpms or so but ever since new same thing. Please find an answer. My father isn’t pleased at all. We would like to have a fishing trip where we don’t have to stop shut it off for a bit start up go again sometimes it corrects itself runs normal others she decides I’m hot. My dad thinks its in the electronics i think the emm or engine management module is bad. SOS please help?

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  6 лет назад

      So does it actually overheat? Even with full water flow if the thermostat is jammed closed or the water galleries blocked it can still over heat. An infra red thermometer is a great way to test the actual temperature of the head. It could also just be a bad temperature sensor in the block.

    Hi fella hay I was wondering if you have any ideas on a etec gen 1 running issue it was working fine when I took it out to the lake couple of months ago went accross the lake then was using the aux to troll but had to start and stop the big moter as was really windy and needed it to correct the steering … at end of the day went to give it a good blow out and it was coughing spluttering missing I thought I’d fouled the plugs so got some new ones and made sure they were indexed correctly same thing would idol fine but soon as you accelerate starts coughing spluttering . So I changed all filters along with fresh fuel same thing . I was told they have a choke that can stick open but can’t find any info on location but I’m at a loss on what it could be it’s obvious it’s a fuel thing but I’m stumped on what to do next

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 лет назад

      There is quite a bit of piping to fill before water will come out the telltale, but I wouldn't expect it to take more than about 15 seconds.

    Just subscribed and enjoying all of your videos. Thinking of repowering my 18 ft aluminum V-hulled fishing boat. It currently has a 1994 Yamaha 70 hp (2 stroke of coarse) Thinking about a new Yamaha 70 4 stroke but concerned about the ability of this motor to get the carcasses of myself and overfed friends up on plane. Current motor can do it, but it takes some time. I heard the 4 stroke will not have the grunt on the low end that the current motor provides. That leads me to the 75 etec. I like the video of it jumping up on plane, it is lighter than the larger 75 HP 4 strokes, not sure I'm comfortable with all the magic that makes it work. I've become accustom to a very reliable and low drama motor, would you recommend an etec?
    Also, you seem like a very smart and hard working guy, hope you are well paid for your efforts.

      Hey Tom. 18 ft is a pretty big boat, but I know my friend's 15 ft boat gets on the plane amazingly quickly with a 60 Yamaha four stroke on it. I would personally always go for a four stroke, but that's just my preference.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Michael. The fuel from the tank is cool yes, but with EFI motors the fuel is kept under pressure at about 40PSI and unused fuel is recirculated. This is the fuel that needs cooling to stop it from boiling.

      My brother bought a good used Lund 16 ft with a newer 40hp Honda. Gut less, and plowed water. We tried everything to get it up on plane. Never did. My buddy 25hp 2 stroke Mercury blew past him all the time. He bought a 40 2 stroke and problem solved. Im buying a 60hp Evinrude E-Tech very soon. My 50 hp Mercury never ran very well, and I service it properly. its a 2001 and its time for new. Each time I tilt it up for over 20min its a bear to start, Im fed up with it.

    Hey Stu, I’m finding a lot of evinrude Gen 2 issues with not peeing water. Any experience with them? I have one at the shop. Just to get into it is a task. Lol

    Etec's are designed to cool the fuel?

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, because of the high pressure of fuel injection the fuel needs to be kept cool as the pressure increases the temp.

      Dangar Marine I had the sensor service soon sign come up on a new gen 1 Etec on Saturday. It was a boiling hot day, 40C + and I was fanging it like a good Aussie with the kids. Could the night ambient temp just be the problem or more. New engine, 2 years old. I’ll take out again but won’t know unless the message come back but often the computer needs clearing on these motors I’d imagine. Engine lost no power, in fact I think I beat the devil out of it and it performed as always, smashed all contenders. 135HO G1. I love this engine. Different to the V4, in that it’s better but the 130 V4 G1 is a weapon considering it’s weight and output. The sound can’t be beat either errr, save for the V6. But again, I’ve had both and both kick arse. I’m nervous about these 3 cylinders though...

    Back flush... Back flush... Back flush...
    If you show us how to make a quick connection to the tell tale outlet we can then Back flush... the entire engine - which usually dislodges most debris (especially if performed regularly as a standard engine flush - only in reverse)

      Water going in through the telltale won't go through the engine on most models. ruclips.net/video/joEQChcZl2A/видео.html

    I assume the nipple on the exhaust cover is before the water goes into the engine, correct ? The ECM and the VST want the coldest water possible !

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 лет назад

      Yes, it is water that hasn't been through the motor.

      Interesting, thanks. So it shows the pump is working, but not that it's getting through the engine/cooling, etc.

      RichE - Good point ! Most telltales are at least warm. I guess they are relying on the temp sensor to warn for that.

    Good afternoon I write to you from Colombia, excellent for your videos. One question what happens if I put injectors of a 175 hp on a 90 hp

    Great video as always. What's your feeling on the Gen 1 Etecs? I'm contemplating a used one that is very clean and the printout looks good.

      If it's in good condition it could be a good buy. I'm not a big fan of e-tecs but if the price is right...

      A while ago I tried to start doing short midweek quick tips, things that didn't make a full weekend video but were worth sharing anyway, even if it is just for people who have the exact problem looking for a solution. Weekend videos will stay long format.
