John Travolta had an autistic son, Jett, who passed away at the age of 16. It's possible that he pulled some of the mannerisms from his experience with his son. It's not pretty, but possibly accurate. I had an employee with a grown up autistic son-- he would come in to work, periodically, with black eyes and scratches. His son also didn't read emotional cues very well and would obsess, to the point of getting violent, over the most mundane things.
