I keep on hearing American reviewers saying the movie is too complicated and open ended. Now I have watched it, I realise Americans must dumb because the movie was easy to follow. You don't need to be spoon feed plot details to understand the it.
      Spoiler:
The plot is the US government has created underground clones of the American population because they realise clones share a soul with the original people, so they can more effectively control population by controlling the captive clones. The big twist is one of the clones manages to switch places with the original person and steal life of the original person, so by the end of the movie you realise you have cheering on the Villain defeat the story's hero. It was also cool the scene with the son at the end of the movie, because you can see he is clearly angry because the original person has told him is mother is a clone who stole her life. I actually think the end is stronger than Get Out because all the clues are there and add up.

The father character represents Jordan Peele. He was written in course to reflect him as most writers do when crafting a story. But all around, that character represents him and even is physically depicted like him in actual life. Hair, glasses, physique, and corky personality. The character is portraying him in a honest perspective to himself. As his tethering would be him not being the man he wishes he could be in a serious life or death situation that involves his family as he's the head and supposed to provide and PROTECT.

  • @Ratso_DeLynch

One detail that I haven't heard anyone talk about is the son, Jason always wearing a mask over his head - similar to Jason Voorhees, son of Mrs Voorhees who was the original killer/evil in Friday the 13th - just like we find out adelaide was the original mom/evil from underground.. I know that one might be a bit of a stretch but if you think about it a slasher nod like this from peele makes sense!
Thanks for the awesome breakdown so soon after the movie was released!! You touched on many details that alot of people missed, I can't wait to watch it again to look for all of the Easter eggs and see the movie from "red's" perspective a bit more.

Just watched Us last night and I'm not a huge horror fan but this movie was fantastic.
Thank you Goodwin for bringing up the score because it was incredible. Scores and sound editing can make or break a horror movie and in this case, it made the movie for me. The way it was scored during the light/comedic scenes and then as the movie got darker is something to behold. I know it's early in the year but I hope it gets nominated for original score as well as the sound editing/mixing categories.
The acting was also great. Lupita Nyong'o is a star. I hope she gets nominated for Best Actress but I doubt it since this movie feels more like a genre movie than Get Out did so she'll probably get the Emily Blunt treatment. Kids in movies usually get on my nerves but I liked both kids in Us - they were cute but never annoying. That's an accomplishment, if you ask me. Ok fine, Winston Duke did not have great range but he was loveable and his comedic timing was spot on.

Get Out was very good. Us was a letdown. I just saw it today and I was shocked at how much I didn’t enjoy it as I was so excited to see this. Ever since I saw the first trailer I was so ready for this, but it was so “meh”...

Winston was doing an imitation of Jordan Peele because Jordan didn’t want to act and direct himself

  • @Amber_xo_133
    @Amber_xo_133 5 дней назад

Jordan Peele gave the cast 11 horror films to watch so they would have "a shared language" when filming: Jaws (1975), Dead Again (1991), The Shining (1980), The Babadook (2014), It Follows (2014), A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), The Birds (1963), Funny Games (1997), Martyrs (2008), Let the Right One In (2008), and The Sixth Sense (1999).
The filmmakers did not need to do much work on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, as many games and rides are originals going far back as the 1910s. Also, indeed there is an underground tunnel system under the Boardwalk, though it is mostly used for storage and as a shelter in case of any emergency. There is no hall of mirrors (as shown in the film) on the beach.
Lupita Nyong'o based Red's voice on Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and specifically the spasmodic dysphonia he suffered from.
Like The Lost Boys (1987), several key scenes take place on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. This is even referenced in-universe, when Adelaide's mother (Anna Diop) says, "You know, they're shooting a movie over there by the carousel."
The words Get Out (2017), which was the title of Jordan Peele's previous film, can be seen carved into the sides of the entrance of the hall of mirrors.
Duke Nicholson's characters are named Danny and Tony, and Jordan Peele told him to play the part like Lloyd the bartender from The Shining (1980), not realizing at the time that he is Jack Nicholson's grandson.
The Bible verse that continuously appears in the film (Jeremiah 11:11) reads: "Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them."
During the filming at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the rides were all filled with dummies, then CGI was used to create moving people.
Between takes, Lupita Nyong'o would remain in character as Red, much to the consternation of the cast and crew.
To portray her alter ego character Red and her odd voice mannerisms, Lupita Nyong'o worked with an ENT specialist, a vocal therapist, and a dialect coach. This was done largely out of fear of damaging her voice.
Jason Blum, who had produced Jordan Peele's previous movie Get Out (2017), was asked to produce this one as well. As his low-budget production company Blumhouse could not come up with the necessary budget, Universal Pictures hired him as a producer outside of his company on a one-time basis.
Grossed $71 million over its United States opening weekend, the highest ever for an original horror film, and the second highest for an original live-action film, after Avatar (2009)'s $77 million.
The overhead shot of the Wilsons driving to the vacation home, along with the synchronized speech and mannerisms of the twins, is a reference to The Shining (1980).
Ironically, the name of the Tylers' unhelpful virtual assistant, Ophelia, derives from the Greek "ophéleia," meaning "help."
The baseball game is tied at 11-11... and one team is Minnesota. Minnesota's team is named the Twins.
While the Wilsons are in the Tylers' house, Jason eats a bowl of dry Froot Loops. This references a scene in Jordan Peele's previous movie, Get Out (2017), in which a character eats Froot Loops and drinks milk from separate glasses.
The presence of white rabbits, the hall of mirrors, and the red jumpsuits worn by the Tethered are all references to Alice in Wonderland. The hall of mirrors in particular represents "through the looking glass" while the red suits represent the Red Queen, the villain of the story.
Archive footage of five-year-old Nicole Richie appears in the Hands Across America commercial.
Twins Cali Sheldon and Noelle Sheldon's first role was taking turns playing Baby Emma on the final season of Friends (1994).
The fast food that the family eats is called "Copperpots", a nod to Chester Copperpot, the legendary treasure hunter in The Goonies (1985) which is referenced many times in the movie.
There's no hidden meaning for Gabe's infatuation with the boat. Jordan Peele simply wanted Gabe to have a boat as a status symbol.
Rabbits are often seen as a symbol of prosperity. Ironically, rabbits are the main food source for the Tethered who, compared to their above ground counterparts, have nothing.
Among Josh Tyler's tattoos is a pair of antlers, one on each arm, a reference to Jordan Peele's previous movie, Get Out (2017).
I Got 5 On It" by the hip-hop rap duo Luniz, is the song featured in the Us movie trailer and remixed into several scenes in the movie. The song was released in May 1995. It was certified a platinum single (one million units sold) in October 1995. The title is a phrase meaning to pay half of a dime bag (a $10 bag of cannabis) with another person.
There is a character named Nancy whose doppelgänger is named Syd. This is a reference to Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen.
The doppelgängers toying with and taunting the Wilsons while they're situated on the couch, simply watching in fear, is a reference to Funny Games (1997)/Funny Games (2007).
The Wilsons' toy closet includes the game "Guess Who?", a classic board game requiring players to match the identical face of the card chosen by the other player.
The son's name, Jason, is a reference to Friday the 13th's villain, Jason, who also wears a mask.
The scissors used by the doppelgängers in the film are also a reference to A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), where the same weapon is used. They're also a reference to Dead Again (1991), which features an antique pair of scissors.
This is similar to The Anti-Matter Man (1967), where evil twins of the Robinson family plot to take their places. In fact, Lost in Space did several variations on this theme.
Jason wears a Jaws (1975) shirt for his trip to the beach. When Jason disappears on the beach to go to the bathroom, there is a point where he begins to slow walk. Over his shoulder, there is a distinct shadow that looks like a shark fin breaching the water.
The use of the song I Got 5 On It appears to resonate with the main theme of film. It tells of two guys each chipping in $5 to buy a $10 bag of weed, which, like the scissors and the repetition of the number 11 within the film, is a combination of two things creating one whole, just like the Tethered themselves.
Jordan Peele has said that one of the inspirations for the film was Mirror Image (1960).
The end credits give special thanks to two American directors: Paul Thomas Anderson and Steven Spielberg. Both have connections to the world of horror. When Anderson was a young kid, his father hosted a late night horror show in Cleveland. Spielberg wrote and produced Poltergeist (1982), a movie about a family who is haunted by a host of demonic ghosts who take possession of a little girl.
Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke previously starred in Black Panther (2018).
    Among those thanked: Steven Spielberg
When the family is figuring out where they can be safe from the detached, Lupita Nyong'o's character suggests Mexico. Lupita Nyong'o was born in Mexico City.
As of July 2022, the only Jordan Peele-directed film to not feature actor Daniel Kaluuya.
After her father wins a boardwalk game, Adelaide selects a Michael Jackson: Thriller (1983) T-shirt as her prize. As a child, Corey Feldman was once a member of Michael Jackson's close friendship circle, and was also one of the stars of both The Lost Boys (1987) and The Goonies (1985). Both films are referenced in "Us".
The word on Zora's hoodie means "rabbit" in Vietnamese.
By the end of the film, each member of the Wilson family has killed their own respective counterparts. Alternatively, each member of the Tyler family was killed by their own respective counterparts.
The Tyler twins appear to be based on the Grady twins in The Shining (1980). During the beach scene, their posture is similar when standing over Zora and instead of saying "Come and play with us" they make fun of Jason playing in the sand. Also, when we see their bloody corpses in the shot looking down the elevated hallway, they are lying in similar positions to the Grady twins murder flashbacks.
When Jason gets 'lost' on the beach, many of the camera shots directly reference those used in Jaws (1975), during similar beach scenes. Jason is even wearing a 'Jaws' T-shirt, further underlining Jordan Peele's reverence to the classic film.
Besides the obvious nod to Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees in Adelaide's son Jason who likes to wear masks, in the original Friday the 13th (1980), the mother is the actual villain, which mirrors the fact that Adelaide is actually Red.
When Adelaide is lying on the couch, she sees a spider on the table crawling past a larger toy spider. This image foreshadows the 'doppelgänger' theme in the movie.
The ambulance toy that blocks the closet door foreshadows the end of the film.

I like how these guys are honest. I hate when someone comes out in the comment section and says that they saw things coming before they unfolded. It's fucking impossible because the movie shows you things at the end that you don't see until it wants you to.
