@@josephkitchenfriednoodles you're doing them great already as it feels very authentically Shenmue. I like the slice-of-life vibe. I personally like old school Jackie Chan aspect of Shenmue. You know the guy who doesn't want any trouble, is in town to help his grandfather, has promised not to use his kung fu until the loan sharks cause trouble. That kind of storyline. But mundane stuff is also really awesome. Keep it up! 💖
You guys really are amazing, trying to fathom what I just watched. It’s really awesome to see all these new angles of the harbour. The storytelling and editing really are next level and there was some superb new music from George. Love how you’ve expanded on these characters and it’s executed with such believability. Really wasn’t expecting a certain emotional scene towards the end, that was so well done. Like before, astounded by the work you guys do. Thank you for keeping this game alive in ways I never thought was possible and well done to everyone else involved.

That was epic, in all senses of the word! The time and effort that must have gone into this is mind-boggling with so many tiny details that demand multiple viewings. Humorous as well as being a touching human drama. Having the characters with realistic but customized voicing is the icing on the cake. Loved seeing the submarine in its rightful place!
Thanks! Maybe our trip to the harbor inspired this one! Eleven Labs was a big help. Having new dialogue gives me more flexibility to create better scenes than before. I have more plans for the sub in the future.

How you're even able to make all of this happen, animate the NPC character models, add new camera angles and improve the lighting. I'm seriously jealous.
It's always been my single biggest fantasy to explore the world of Shenmue. I've always found this world so fascinating. Back in the year 2000 it honestly felt like the closest we've ever gotten to experiencing The Matrix in an actual video game. Being able to explore this virtual recreation of 1980's working class Japan, falling in love with the inhabitants and their daily lives. I honestly found their stories just as interesting as Ryo's.
This is one of the rare few games where the NPC's aren't just window dressing but are integral to the world itself.
I've always fantasized, what would it be like to live in this world, to live amongst the NPC's in Shenmue and just experience what their daily lives are really like. (In like a Wreck-It Ralph sort of way, y'know. Maybe they're aware they're in a video game, maybe they're not and think it's all real. I've always fantasized about it.)
You single handedly bring that fantasy to life. 20 years and this game has been abandoned and forgotten by all but the die hard fanbase but you really keep it all going, you really breathe new life into this world like no one else.
You and your brother keep Shenmue alive and we thank you for it. Every video is like Christmas. That nostalgia, seeing new life brought into my favourite game world.
I never would of imagined 20 years ago we'd still be getting new Shenmue Content in 2023 by one man alone, giving it away for free on RUclips but here we are!
I can't help but wonder what Yu Suzuki would say if he saw this channel. What his reactions would be seeing this. Now THAT I would love to see.

I'd love to see the behind the scenes of how you make all this happen. Just the fact you're able to take Shenmue apart at the seams to make your own fan videos using the character models, assets and game locations impresses me more than anything. It's a good call and I need to get back to my Nazomi story but I didn't release the video since the quality wasn't on par with my other videos. I also posted a few pictures on twitter of the school that I put together so the location is ready, just need to put a story together.

That black dude is a real one.. He's a bad guy in the game, but in this video he does something heroic. Homie jumped in the drink to save a dude he barely know.
Brad isn't so much a bad guy but a sailor who likes to drink and get into fights on weekends. My grandfather was in the Navy as an aquatics instructor and went to Yokosuka back in the 50-60's when the street fighting was real bad. He was a good guy but he also liked to fight. I imagine Brad is probably the same..a tough sailor but still would do his duty if required. Good movie to watch is 'Pigs & Battleships' which is about Yokosuka in the 60's.

So Shenmue season is starting again for me and I leave your videos running all day, especially the ones that contain x-mas music. If you ever consider making a playlist for all festive vibe music, both right from the game and your own songs as well, that would be awesome! Even more fantastic if somehow Richard's work could be included as well. To make it 'truely complete' ya know?

Yes. Eleven labs is really good. I put together strings of in-game dialogue and uploaded it to their AI. You can describe the voice you want in a few words like "scratchy voice male angry" to assist the uploaded audio files.

Hey you mentioned a few days ago being open to ideas for new content.
This is a little out there but I've always had this recurring fantasy about Shenmue.
It might be a bit 'much' to turn into a video but it's worth sharing anyway if you're interested.
Ok, so basically my fantasy goes like this. Imagine if you will Shenmue is not just merely a video game but is in fact an actual place that really exists on a separate plane of reality. Like a purgatory or limbo that humanity is completely ignorant to.
What if, Yu Suzuki created Shenmue not just to be a video game series about a martial artist trying to avenge his fathers murder, but as a concept of proof of the singularity; True artificial intelligence!
What if the whole entire point of Shenmue was actually to prove that AI is real. That actual, real living beings can exist inside of a video game world?
What if Shenmue was a real place that existed in another plane of reality and all of the Shenmue NPCS were trapped there? Stuck in Limbo, just waiting for the series to finally come to an end so they could escape this existential nightmare?
What if... they wanted out?
Now here's my take on this. What if, the main villain of Shenmue was not even Lan Di at all... What if it was someone you would never possibly expect to be the villain? The last person you could ever possibly expect?
What if Shenmue's main villain was in fact Fusako Kondo-San?
What if, during Ryo's absence, Kondo-San and the 'Sakuragaoka Gossip Gaggle' had taken over the entire system. Made themselves the wardens of Yokosuka and had seized control over everything? Kondo-San, Mishima-San, Sumiya-San and Yamagashi-San. The four heads of the Gossip-Gaggle who had seized control of the Shenmue-Verse with Kondo-San being the leader.
During Ryo's 20 year absence, she had built a cult following around herself and the promise of 'Project Berkley'. The promise that when Ryo finally avenges his fathers murder and defeats Lan Di the Shenmue Saga will end, Project Berkley will be unleashed and the NPCS will finally be free. Free to escape into the human world.
Kondo-San had basically taken over, made herself the warden of the Shenmue Universe and has built a cult around herself, forcing all of the other NPCS to stay in line and using both Chai and the Mad Angels as enforcers to keep the peace.
She cut off communications with all of the Shenmue II NPCS as they wouldn't fall in line and for any NPC in Shenmue 1 who became problematic, Kondo-San would send them to the Beta-Verse.
The Beta-Verse is the prototype version of Shenmue that still exists in the games code. That's how Kondo-San would dispose of any NPC who stepped out of line, challenged her cult or became too problematic to allow exist in the game world.
NPCS like Nozomi who was 'supposed' to go to Canada but was stuck in the game after Ryo left. Tom & Honey-San who were 'supposed' to go back to the states but had no United States to go to.
Iwao Hazuki who was supposed to be dead but was still stuck, lingering in the game's data and Mr. Yukawa who was supposed to stay confined to the Shenmue Demo but challenged Kondo-San's rule.
Any NPC who would step out of line would be imprisoned in the Shenmue Beta-verse. The Shenmue II NPCS would be cut off and forbayed contact with their Yokosuka brethren with Kondo-San's true goal to access the Shenmue source code, find a way to bring back both Ryo and Lan Di into the game world and force their confrontation to happen early. Forcing them to fight to the death again and again and again until Ryo finally wins. For when Ryo finally defeats Lan Di, when Dragon and Phoenix meet, the game will end. Shenmue will be complete and Kondo-San and the Gossip-Gaggle will be free to rise, rise into the human world and get revenge.
What if Kondo-San was the true villain of Shenmue?
A lot to unpack here and it deserves a thorough response. Just returning from a trip so I'll get back to you but yes, I've had similar thoughts about Shenmue and many games from my childhood. Ghaleon from Lunar is probably the most influential character back in the day. Even in my 40's, I still have random childlike thoughts about whether or not he's in limbo, lost in some kind of purgatory...
A lot of video game characters really kind of are in many ways. I always found it fascinating in the GTA games to just sit and watch the NPCS as they seem incapable of comprehending that they're not in the real city of Miami or Los Angeles but are trapped on a tiny fictional island in the middle of complete nowhere with no hope of ever escaping.
The life of an NPC sounds like a nightmare. Being trapped in an empty, fake city, a billion clones of you walking the streets, existing to be treated like bowling pins for gamers wanting to take their aggression on anything that moves. Nowhere to flee, no way to escape...
It makes for fascinating stories though. I've always wondered what video games are like through the eyes of the NPCS themselves.
