Netflix's She-ra and the Princesses of Power recently had their show Bible leaked. It's much different from the finished product which makes us wonder if this is what was used to pitch the show and then once it was greenlit they ended up straying away from it.
Adora and Catra are sisters. Shadow Weaver isn't targeting Catra. Entrapta's a goth kid and is so scary she even intimidates Hordak. There's a lot to unpack here.

This She-ra Bible is definitely an interesting direction that the series could have taken. It even brought up Adora's people as the Eternians, and cemented the fact that Adora is a princess of Eternia, rather than have Adora be a princess due to being She-ra. Sadly, still no He-man and She-ra connection, due to the rights issue. Such a shame. Nice for She-ra to have her own Bible, like He-man did prior.

  • @CoolG97

Kinda bugged that Mermistia is referred to as being able to turn into a mermaid, rather than just being a mermaid. 80s Mermistia spent most of her screen time with her tail, which made sense because her kingdom was underwater like a mermaid kingdom should be.
Also, kinda annoyed with the Sea Hawk interpretation. (This is better than what the reboot ended up with) One of the reasons I liked him so much in the original is because they made it clear that while he admired She-Ra his heart belongs to Adora. It avoids the two-person love triangle and I thought it was nice.

    • @unigenius
      @unigenius 2 года назад +28

Finally, someone else says it!! I was about to make a whole video detailing Mermista. But one of my biggest issues is that they treat her as a girl that can become a mermaid rather than a mermaid that can turn her fins into legs. It's a very important distinction that is always ignored! Being underwater is her normal, land is odd. Not the other way around.
Also, it would have been fun to see Mean Girl Mermista sorta hating on and complaining every time she has to use her legs. Like she makes a big deal out of it every time, but it's to hide that she just wants to hang out with her friends.
[Adora, Glimmer, Bow and Mermista at the Crystal Falls talking about some MacGuffin]
Mermista: "....Let me guess. 😑 it's on land?"
      Adora: "Well...yeah-"

Glimmer: "Mermista...you know... you don't HAVE to come with us."
Mermista: "It's fine! It's fine! I already have my legs on! Let's just go!"
Bow: "....So judging by the Intel we've got and my research, then what were looking for is most likely hidden somewhere in the Sea of Perzia-"
Mermista: "THE SEA?! Finally you people go somewhere sensible! Count me in!"
      Bow: "Well, actually, Mermista, we-"
Mermista: "A bup-bup-bup-bup! Bow I will NOT have you ruining this for me!
      [Arrives]
Bow: "So it's got to be somewhere around here."
      M: "Bow....what am I looking at?"
      B: "The... Sea of Perzia?"
M: "Mmhm! And can you tell me why I see no WA-TER at this SEA?"

I will say that I don’t think Noelle, if she did write this, was really that honest about their intentions. Considering how they behave with their show and with the fandom ( and a lot of other things that really hurt/upset me, personally ), I wouldn’t be surprised if they, if she was the one that wrote this, lied or gave half truths about this whole thing. Seeing this Bible (although it's worded more like a pitch) makes me wonder why so much of the actual show and story changed. A lot of the ideas that were mentioned seemed genuinely interesting and could've really allowed the show to stand alongside the original if the proper amount of effort was put toward it. Truthfully, it makes the actual show even worse when the pitched ideas had so much more to them.
I think one of the more interesting things in the pitch was the relationship between Adora and Catra being a platonic "adopted sister" thing and how Catra in general wasn't as monstrous. She was evil, sure, but she's not "Let's kill a universe because I can't let Adora win" evil. It's likely that redemption would probably have been pushed for Catra anyway, but at least with pitch Catra she didn't attempt a literal universe ending atrocity.
Going off on a slight tangent, I like that there wasn't any mention of shipping in the bible/pitch thing, but it also makes me really wish there were stronger platonic bonds in the show we got. It seemed like every single person had to be matched to someone at the end, even if the relationship was unhealthy or simply had no buildup. While "the power of friendship" is a funny trope to joke about, there is a strength in genuine friendship and camaraderie. Friends can push you to new heights, pick you up when you're down, or give you a different perspective on something. Better yet, a friendship can evolve into something else, such as a brotherhood/sisterhood or perhaps a romance if you really need to add one in.
TL;DR, Bible/pitch thing is way better than actual show.

    • @painedgray
      @painedgray Год назад +1

Do... you seriously think there wasn't enough friendship in the show? The show about a huge group of friends saving the world that discusses multiple versions of friendship??

    • @michaelpeacock640
      @michaelpeacock640 Год назад +4

@@painedgrayYep, absolutely, at least with the Best Friend Squad. Now, most of the problems circulate around Glimmer, who tends to be exceptionally bratty to her friends, ignoring Bow as much as she ignored her mother and outright accusing Adora of murdering her mother during the reality destruction fiasco in S3, not to mention the whole "working with Shadow Weaver" thing since SW was Adora's abuser. Even though Glimmer did apologize in S5, which was good, it still doesn't change the fact that Glimmer at least has been a shitty friend. There's also the issue of Catra being Catra, what with her "friendship" with Adora being a string of constant abuses and world destroying antics, and yet that's still meant to be a friendship/romance...somehow.
As for the Princess Alliance, I can't really call them friends as such. They're more like one note archetypes that don't grow beyond their restrictive role (Perfuma: pacifist flower child, Mermista: uncaring/unaffected valley girl, Frosta: child). Sure, they interact, but I don't feel like there's any real bond besides their magic bond they share with each other. This one note personality that each Princess has also means that they generally can't be multifaceted outside of something like friendship; they just "are" one thing and that's it, akin to an NPC in a game.
As for She-Ra "discussing" different types of friendships, that's not the same as proper follow through of a concept. For an example, the characters may "discuss" Catra and Scorpia's roles in the Princess Prom bombing/hostage taking operation, but there's no follow through. It doesn't really change the dynamic of the relationship for too long as both Scorpia and Catra easily become part of the Alliance, with barely any pushback on the part of the other characters
TL;DR: I don't think friendship is done properly in the show because the characters who are meant to be friends are either one note or do things that are the opposite of friend behavior

I’m greatly disturbed and intrigued by the fact that many of the changes I made for my reimagining of MOTU as a whole (born from my frustrations with They-Rx 2018 and Kevin Smith’s Revelation) actually match up with what was pitched here in the series bible. Catra and Adora as surrogate siblings? Mermista actually having a personality? The involvement of modern-day people from Eternia? Heck, even Adora growing to embrace her femininity? It’s almost like I and whoever wrote this series’s pitch were on the same page.
It’s honestly sad that She-Ra 2018 ended up so different from what was described here. While there are some things I’d keep from the reboot for future SR revivals (big buff sweetheart Scorpia and energetic tech gal Entrapta are a must in my book), everything here sounds exciting at the most and interesting at the very least. When I first saw it leaked on Twitter, it more or less confirmed a lot of suspicions I had about the show not being well-planned or worked out. One of my mutuals said it best, but it definitely feels more like a pitch. Don't get me wrong, series bibles CAN AND HAVE BEEN used as pitches in the past, but they have to be tailored for that pitch and be well-put together.
Let's honestly ask ourselves a question here...if Noelle Stevenson was not already part of the animation network/clique, do you think this would honestly get through? In my earnest opinion, no. Mainly because certain elements like the story-telling, worldbuilding, and characters are so poorly laid out that I doubt if this was an OG IP it would've been picked up.
That being said, there are some elements I wished that got reworked from the OG series bible, not because they're great ideas, but are just far better than what we actually got in the end. Oh well.

I said something akin to it being a pitch on ClownfishTV's video on this a few weeks ago. Pretty much Stevenson's She-ra: Princess of Bait n' Switch. I wonder if this was just to get Mattel on board with her as the show runner and then they scrap it for the fanfic and diary, seeing as the moment the show as see - Mattel went silent on it. Not promotion, not toys, until forced to and no one bought them until it was on clearance. They just kept quiet. I'd only seen a few episodes of the original show but I liked it way more because even though it was campy, it KNEW it was campy and was having fun. The new show felt so removed, like it shared the names of the characters and nothing else. It was CONSTANTLY filled with angst, which was exhausting to watch. Given Stevenson's insistence that the new show should be made with love in relation to the original, I'm curious as to how and when that insistence fell through...

Another great video, M and J. The new She-Ra bible is certainly very interesting, and I do like a lot of what it had. Not everything is perfect, but there is a part of me who generally wants to see this as a show instead of what we got. I've wanted to do a rewrite fanfic of the show, but I haven't actually done it for a couple of reasons: I've been busy with college work, and I didn't yet know how to really set up the story and characters (my thoughts can get very scattered). Thanks to this bible, I feel like I have more direction and focus for how I want the story to go. I think the way I want to write my fanfic is in a novel-like format with different perspectives telling it, like Heroes of Olympus. For those who don't know the book series, the story is in third person, with you seeing a character's thoughts without them directly narrating. For the beginning of the story, and most of what can be considered a first season, the story would be told from 4 perspectives. Adora would have mostly through hers for the most part, but also moments where see things from the point of view from Catra, Glimmer, and Bow. Over time, we see the story from the perspective of more characters, most importantly the other Princesses. I don't want this comment to get too long, so I'll post my thoughts on what I want to do with the characters, and how their interpretations will be based on A) What I liked from the bible, B) What I liked from the show (there was definitely some), C) What I like from what little I know from the original (I will try to watch more), and D) my own personal preferences.

Bow, Frosta, Catra, and Entrapta are better in the show than written here. The Bible makes them come off as really unlikable. Mermista sounds about the same though calling her the "Not-Sucky Aquaman" is cringe. Hard to say if this Glimmer is better than the show. It's easy to write something down and call it better, but it's all about presentation. Sounds to me this Glimmer could have been just as bad as the show version. Plus, it sounds like she was supposed to be Adora's love interest or something judging by the jealousy and the fact she becomes a puppet to the big bad, just like Catra. The only thing I don't like about THIS Adora is the whole Secret Identity thing. What is the point of that? I do however like the explanation of Adora liking girly pretty things because of how bleak the Horde is. I also like that it makes it more apparent that she doesn't understand things like love or flirting because of the Horde upbringing and find it funny that Sea Hawk's advances don't register to her. Sea Hawk seems cooler in the Bible than in the show. Castaspella and Shadow Weaver come off as more interesting and human than in the show. Weave almost came close in the show, but fell short and Casta was just plain forgettable and boring.

"The Spirit clearly says that in later times many will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings will come from hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron." --1 Timothy 4:1-2

I like the version we got TBH...minus catra and adora being shipped.
I understand that they werent raised as siblings per say..they were more of orphans in the same foster care. It comes off as strange but, it could just be my own assumption that orphans in that situation would assume their peers as siblings.
I like the catra we got though. Shes frustrating but complicated and relatable. She struggles with things much more complicated than "i cant profit off of you!"
Also, i think the transforming into a panther thing would be a weird thing to implement. It would need extra exposition and just doesn't do anything for the character in the end.
Also, i like the shadow weaver we got. I liked that she never is redeemed and just kinda dips on everyone to make herself look better and was even snarky enough to say "you're welcome" before doing so.
Would have been nice to get more explanations for things though.
Why does catra wear that mask?
Why does adora say that thing about grayskull?
    Where did they find catra?
It doesnt hurt the story but it wouldve been appreciated.

I think I get it now. Step 1: Make a show bible giving the basic idea for a show. Step 2 get your ruff draft green lit. Step 3 earn the trust to have complete freedom in your project. Step 4 throw in as many gay/lesbian, (non binary/not a thing) characters as possible into your gay agenda cartoon. That's how you send your message make it all about the agenda not a good show. Ironically with that said Shera was awesome. Up for debate but to me awesome. Despite the gay agenda they actually made a show with good characters who you care about. It had character development, it was funny, it could get dark sometimes, had lots of dramatic scenes, a redemption ark. And of course romance. Lets see, Adora x catra, possible scopia x catra or perfuma, spinarella x netassa the token lesbian couple, that chick from the desert the big masculine chick saw her wink at a girl. Am I missing anyone? That's 7 lesbians off the top of my head, not Shure about perfuma. 2 homosexuals' bow's dad's. Double trouble non Binary(again that's not a thing, fight me) The whole show was gay, gay, gay, gay, GAY. So much gay I forgot there were 4 straight couples, Glimmer x bow, The king and queen, Mermista and seahawk, and Entrapta and Hordack. Blink and you'll miss them. So despite this show having the biggest gay LGBT what ever you call yourselves agenda surprisingly was still a good show. I don't mind a lesbian protagonist, wouldn't watch a homo protagonist cartoon because (your going to call me homophobic) I'm straight it doesn't interest me. I wonder if anyone can top this. Its the gayest show I've ever seen, (gayer than will and grace) and I actually liked it. Lgbt whatever you call yourselves congratulations! You did it! You got your agenda! (balloons fall everywhere) Now go fix Batwoman!

Not gonna lie. Noelle Stevenson still can’t draw good, it’s like a kindergartener who’s barely beginning. Just my opinion, but I have no idea how the show looks so much different from her work.

Quite the opposite from you-- I am surprised just how much of it stayed the same from the initial drafting stage to where things went in the show. If we were to concentrate on the first few episodes of Season 1, the differences are super minor. I don't think one could have read any romantic interest between Catra and Adora until the last season, so describing Catra as a dirtbag little sister does sound about right for those first few episodes. Generally I expect that a show would change a whole lot more than this between the initial ideas and actually producing episodes, I am surprised that some of the big latter season stuff was planned from the beginning, but maybe that's why they felt so sudden and rushed-- they were doing a different story and then suddenly had to pull things back on track to where the season was meant to end in the final 2 episodes.

People solely blaming Noelle for the final product are funny as if she doesn't have to answer to Dreamworks producers and executives who have power over her. These shows that get branded as "sjw" don't happen by accident, and controversy surrounding a show seems to be a good way to get eyeballs watching. Look at how many people watched High Guardian Spice, which would have just been another forgettable kids show if not for the controversy. It's a legit way to market, executives don't care about art, they want return on investment. Old school fans need to stop getting offended and understand that this is a business, and business doesn't care about artists

That's nonsense. Clearly there is a decision to take politics over earnings because we've seen numerous projects suffer this exact fate. Doing the exact opposite of what long time fans want in favor of a creator's personal agenda. Than the usual blame game after it inevitably fails or underperforms. If what you said was true, execs would overrule this shit.

Honestly, most of the changes were for the better. Meeting Eternians COULD have been fun, but probably wouldn‘t have been. The story it became sticked to the conflict of the protagonist and complexities of a colonialized planet way better than some generic „let‘s talk to and make peace with the colonialists and it works“. The First Ones were colonialists and it would have been not original in any way to frame them as „okay people you can get along with if you just get to know them“ or who are even helpful.
