Oh man, the mask ones. I feel those.
I'm making masks for people too. The vast majority of people I've made them for have been incredibly grateful and understanding of potential delays (like when it took 3 weeks for elastic to get delivered... elastic is so difficult to get right now!). I'm only charging for shipping if I have to ship them, and am not charging for the masks themselves... that said, I do accept any donations to help with supply costs. Most people have been kind enough to donate, which is very much appreciated, but not at all required.
However, I have one "customer" who's been... difficult. (note: this is someone in my family, so there's extra pressure to accept her requests). Money isn't the issue, she happily donated a somewhat large sum and kindly donated fabric (THANKS!!)... she first ordered 2 dozen masks (to hand out to her church friends), and then later asked for a dozen more. That said, I think she thinks she gets special treatment for donating (thinking that she's now a "paying customer" so she gets priority or something) and gets annoyed when I tell her I have x-amount of people ahead of her. She's also frequently asks for changes to her order... for example, when I didn't have elastic, all the masks I was making used bias tape as ties. I get that ties are a bit more difficult to use than elastic, but many people do prefer the ties, as elastic (while easier to use) can hurt one's ears if worn all day every day (like for essential workers). Every other customer I've had has been totally fine with their mask having ties instead of elastic. Anyway, she HATES the ties and thinks that everyone feels the same way she does. So she changed her order after I already started making them so that most of them were elastic (by this point I had elastic). Alright, fine... slightly annoying, but not a big deal.
I was handing off masks to her 6-at-a-time (as I finish making them), and then she started complaining that the "masculine" ones weren't "masculine enough" and that the men aren't going to want to wear them. Uhhh... I had plenty of gender-neutral masks in there. And even IF all the masks were flowers and rainbows and unicorns, if a man's masculinity is threatened by that, then it's not the mask that's challenging his masculinity! Every time I handed off six masks, I made sure to tell her "most of these are 'masculine' or gender-neutral", and she'd look at them and have a look on her face like "these aren't masculine!" 🙄
THEN, she asked me to set aside the the most 'masculine-looking' mask I had for some church friend across the country. Apparently this dude (that she's never met in person) has a wife who **MAKES MASKS** (so he does not need a mask), but he wants a "special one" from his church friends here, to remind him of them. Uh, what? Ok, whatever. Why does she want me to set one aside for this guy? Because she wanted me to embroider her church's logo on the mask! She could not understand why I couldn't honor this request. 😒
I finally finished the first 24 masks she requested, then about two weeks later she wants me to make a dozen more. *sigh* Sure. She specifies that she wants at least half of them to be "masculline", and since it's obvious she and I have different ideas of what that means, she wants just solid colours for them. 🙄 I tell her they are not going to be done until the end of the next week since I have other customers. She says she is fine with that. A couple days later, she texts me and asks if the masks are done and if she can come pick them up the next day. What? No... I only have two done, man! I told you when they'd be done! I also know she's not going to be happy with the solid colours... as the only solid colours I have are brown and light blue. I have a feeling she's going to think the light blue is "too feminine".
We are in a pandemic and these are masks for people who need them! They are not fashion accessories! My god!

      @franl155 4 года назад +14

Normally I typically agree with your assessment of the butthole rating, but this time I disagree completely.
To say that if a business shouldn’t exist if they can’t pay their employees. Period. Is kind of cruel.
Normally yes. That would be the case sure.
But how do you expect a business who is a live theatre, presumably a small theatre troop because most people don’t want to pay the $25-$50 fee to go see a live play, so they scrape by anyways
To support itself during a pandemic? When no one is going out? When gatherings are limited? It’s not that the business failed. It’s that there’s a pandemic.
When owning a small theatre like that. The owners usually give up more than they should to help keep it afloat. But to say they shouldn’t be there? Really?
This same situation happened in a nearby town where I live and all the actors and community jumped on the opportunity to help.
Sure there may be facts we don’t know
But OP didn’t force the staff to do a virtual show. They asked if anyone wanted to volunteer. They could have just said no.
The community doesn’t have to donate.
No one is being forced to do anything.

@@Freekymoho I completely agree. Typically when you think of owners, that is what you think, and I hold the same opinion, but I grew up loving live theatre, both performing and watching. It's a community, and a dying one at that. Most Theatres can't pay their actors, and it's nearly all volunteer based.
I do think it would have been nice for OP to make the fundraiser for everyone, or the theatre itself, so when it is safe, they don't have to worry about going negative when paying the actors again.
But I just don't think OP was being a butthole for doing what they were doing. They were trying to do a nice thing.

A lot of the same actors are in almost every show, and the whole community (both locals and theatre folk) would ABSOLUTELY pitch in to help if we heard it was in trouble. A theatre isn't "a job"; it's a home.

Good point. We don't know anything about that job, except that it's serving at a restaurant, and it has an artistic director. The reality of this story can be anything from the restaurant as a warm, tightly nit community of actors who see this place as a second home and their fellow staff members as a second family, OR on the opposite extreme, a waitress job with the added stress of having to deal with an owner's son who forces you to help him live out his failed Broadway dreams by participating in bad dinner theater along with all your actual duties. The truth is probably somewhere in between, but where is something we'll never know for sure.
But we do know that the people who actually know the answer to that question don't seem to want to help with a fundraiser. And don't mind pissing off the boss by telling him so. Call me crazy but that says this isn't a 'home' this is a job, and one with numerous employees who have decided they don't mind if they never have to come back to it.

@Skylynxify Reborn If they are temporarily shut down, they are still paying for utilities and rent. Most utility companies will charge a base fee if you don't use x amount of service. Also things like wifi, sometimes can't be cut off because you are in a contract so you can't just pause the service. Things like electricity has to still be used because there are things plugged in and they use electricity, not to mention they still have to run air conditioning because damage to the items can be really bad if they don't circulate air. If the humidity, heat, or cold (Though probably not cold because it is summer) sets in, it can damage your stuff. I've had that happen to me loads of times in storage units or garages.
The employees that were laid off are getting unemployment. Actors in theatres like this are typically contractor based. When the theatre opens again, they will go and audition again, and they will have a job.

As a person who is in theatre this very much is the case. I do BOTH paid and volunteer work. All of our theaters are closed so a lot of us are unable to perform. Since most of our income comes from shows (that actually goes to a council not individual people) that money then goes to pay for the building and the upkeep (rent, utilities, general grounds keeping) it’s also used to make sure we have another season AFTER the pandemic. Playwrights are not cheap nor is the equipment and staff. People look at the arts as if they work like other businesses. For the talent show one I disagree. Though we don’t know their situation, many companies temporarily laid off their employees to 1) save money 2) so that they can get the unemployment with the extra pandemic money. For some, it’s more than they normally make, for others, it should be enough to hold people over without running the company into even more debt. If anything, taking initiative to help keep their workplace from closing completely may benefit the workers in the long run as the economy reopens. And the “if you can’t afford to pay your employees, you don’t deserve to be in business” comment is valid, except for the fact that they did pay their staff until they had to close for 3 MONTHS. I don’t know if a single company in the world that could close for three months and pay their staff during the entire time. It’s just an unreasonable standard man. Plus, helping the owners is in the interest of the employees so that once they can reopen, they will have jobs again.

  • @znerd3664

Look regarding the manager or whatever he was that asked his staff to volunteer. Here's a part no one took into account when criticizing him. "Why are you bending over backwards to help the owners. So what if they're in dire straights"
Because if you want to keep your job; THE COMPANY STILL NEEDS TO EXIST. THAT IS WHAT THE OWNERS WERE SAYING. THEY DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO SUSTAIN THE BUSINESS, MEANING IF THEY DIDN'T GET MORE FUNDS THE BUSINESS WOULD BE UNABLE TO REOPEN. All those people who are currently laid off(including I would assume the manager who made the post), are only laid off until the business is allowed to reopen. BUT if the business CAN'T reopen when the time comes due to a lack of funds, the workers will go from temporarily laid off to fully unemployed.
People are getting a lot more than usual on unemployment right now; they'll be fine. But those boosted unemployment rates will end as everything reopens so they NEED their job to go back to. If the business/owners lost too much money from the shutdown and is forced to permanently close, what are the those workers meant to do? Think before you harp on people

It never stops to amaze me how critical and judgmental rslash is on topics he clearly doesn’t know about. With the theater post, OP was not a butthole nor were the owners of the theater. There is a HUGE problem with the “if a business can not afford to pay the employees x amount, then they shouldn’t have a business at all.” Obviously rslash has never run a business nor had to deal with payroll. For those who don’t know, the vast majority of businesses are NOT super successful. A “successful” business is being able to have a low middle class income for the employees and maybe a high middle class income for the owners. Most businesses CANNOT withstand weeks being closed, let alone months. The reason so many people are demanding states reopen is because they know that if they don’t start making money, their businesses have to close...forever. Many of the businesses that laid people off, like the theater in the post, actually told their employees “hey, we are laying you off, FOR NOW, but the second we reopen, you will have your jobs back.” In fact, many businesses “laid off” employees so those employees would qualify FOR unemployment. This is why the vast majority of the unemployment claims right now are for temporary unemployment. People know that their bosses don’t want to close, but have to, and once they can open up, those jobs are saved for the people who had them prior to the close. Thus Theater OP was trying to help the owners because they knew the owners might lose their business completely. OP wanted to raise money so that there would BE a job after the quarantine. This is why many politicians are asking for loans for SMALL businesses, so that those jobs don’t vanish when this all ends. OP gets 0 out of 5 buttholes for understanding if the owners lose the theater, everyone will still be unemployed after the quarantine. Rslash gets 2 out of 5 buttholes for only thinking about the servers and not the owners and for being so quick to judge when he clearly doesn’t know all the facts.

This. Small businesses are just people. They are a team effort, and often times the owners don't benefit much more than (or even as much as) the employees. I think there is a common misconception that all employment is exploitation, and all employer-employee relations are inherently adversarial and zero sum. That tends to be the case more often as companies grow, and especially become investment vehicles, but not at small dinner theater scale. This guy has worked there 25 years, and likes his job, and he asks others if they like their job to try to save it. And patrons to do the same if they like the business. This is just how communities work. No harm in asking.

That move conversation reminds me of me helping my sister clean her apartment when she moved.
(tldr; My sister thinks it's my fault that she can't be assed with regular home maintenance.)
Me and my room mate had told my sister that we were available for one weekend only (Nov 16-17, this is important), and with both of our jobs, that was the only time we were available to help her. We had told her this several times. I got a message on the monday (Nov 11) before that she hadn't been able to move all her things, but it should be cleared for me to come in on the Friday (Nov 15). I told her I wasn't available that day, so it was fine. On the Friday, she texted me and said that there was still a bunch of furniture left, but that it would be taken care of on the Saturday. She also asked if I really needed the vacuum cleaner before finishing up on the Monday. I reminded here that I wasn't available on the Monday. She hissed at me that I wouldn't be able to finish all the cleaning in one day. I was naive enough to think that she had actual done some cleaning at all, you know, like you do when I live some where, so I said I was sure me and my room mate could do it in one day. Boy, was I wrong. She hadn't even vacuumed for a month (I know this, because there were tufts of dog hair everywhere, and her dog had passed away from old age about a month prior). I took me 6 hours to just clean her 12 sqm kitchen. My hands hurt for a week from all the cleaning gunk that had seeped into my gloves. When we leave at 7 pm, my sister and my dad are both asking me when we're coming back to finish. I remind them, AGAIN, that we can't come back before she moves. Eventually, my room mate is an angel and finds a whole in her, at the time, insane schedule, and goes over to do the last vacuuming.
We later got lectured by my sister that the apartment manager found dust during the inspection. The inspection was two weeks after we cleaned. My sister had not gone back to check if dust had accumulated during those two weeks, so I got yelled at by her.

@Wes Prang so have I plenty of times, from employers that turned out to be scumbags in the end, but there is a difference here, in our town we had a great inn and hotel that were very good towards their employees, and customers, giving them plenty food for a fair price, they went bankrupt because of them having to stay closed due to the pandemic and the rent they had to pay to the place is so steep they could not work it out in the end,
in this particular case it was more than fair to try help the employers if they were good, and I like rSlash but in this particular case he himself reacted like a bit of an A**hole himself, we all have to lean in and help each other in these trying times,

The guitar story: if you're still learning you don't need an expensive or even a mid quality guitar. Sure cheaper ones can be finicky, but new players often bump and scratch their guitars. I have a secondhand guitar that my brother passed down to me when he upgraded. The original value was only $30. While I had to tune it every time I used it, it served me very well. While I was careful, I didn't end up having an absolute panic attack any time it gained a new scratch on it. It still sounded good especially since I maintained the strings. I'll be getting a new guitar as soon as I can afford it, but I will not be paying more than $300 for it simply because I know I'm not ready to possess something more valuable. Handmedown guitars can be really special too. If his "friend" is really so upset that op treated himself to a fine guitar, they can buy their own and pay someone else a lot of money every week for lessons.

For the guy asking people to work for free.I don't think he was the butt hole. There are multiple small theaters that have the type of service of show food beverage bar. If you've been with a company for a long time you want to see it succeed and sometimes you are willing do things for free because you love it so much. Since this was a theater it's very understandable. So I don't think they deserves 5 out of 5 butthole probably just around 1 out of 5. He tried to do a good thing, but other laid off workers were unwilling or unable to help out.

"When you are in negotiations you don't sell to other people" - oh, please. There was no negotiation, it was just the Choosing Beggar trying to bully OP in to selling for less because it wasn't the colour CB wanted. As if CB was being forced to buy those specific ones instead of being free to look for others. And said that the product being clearly advertised as a colour they didn't want made it 'defective' somehow.

Some of her other co-workers thought that they should be free because "they work together and need to lookout for each other!" F-me, $3.00 dollars for your health and protection of your co-workers. I asked my wife to order two and paid $10.00 each as a thank you. All the people who asked for free masks work with NO interruption in pay and actually got bonuses. I don't work for free. I worked for a doctor , who was financially well off. He would dock us for being even a minute late or clocking in early. One night , he asked me to drive him home, off the clock of course. He didn't offer to pay for gas or the bridge toll that taking him home would involve. I explained that I was on a very tight budget and didn't have the extra money to take on the extra costs of taking him home. He had a major hissy fit. I suggested that he call his wife or take a cab. I walked away and went home. Shortly afterwards, he started laying off employees, including myself. The last I heard was that he shut down his practiced and "retired.

About the story with the business that’s going under due to the virus.
“A business that can’t pay their employees shouldn’t stay up at all. Period.” Like come on dude. I know this is a video and all but ending any sentence with “period” makes you sound like you’re on top of a high horse.
This isn’t a “they were a shitty business so they failed “ this isn’t a “they treated their staff poorly so they failed” this isn’t a “they weren’t a good entertainment business so they failed” this is “we got shut down for months out of nowhere” a lot of people are struggling. A lot of people have no income. And asking former employees to do one show to get it back up and rolling is a fantastic idea. They’ll have their jobs back! And I think that’s fantastic. And they’re not demeaning it. They’re asking for volunteers. There’s no harm in that at all.

    • @Zamolxes77
      @Zamolxes77 4 года назад +3

Not exactly, they are asking for slaves, not taking into account slaves have to eat too. If they "volunteer" to work at their previous job for free, how are they gonna earn cash to pay for their food, rent, bills, etc ? Where is the money that comes from the government supporting the business ? Into the owner's pockets, that's where, not into the pockets of the employees.

You obviously don’t own a business. First of all my employees that are laid off are all collecting and also receiving $600 a week extra from the coronavirus stimulus( thank god. At least I know they’re ok until we reopen). The government money for businesses is not that easy to get my friend and if and when you do get it there’s a ton of restrictions on it. It’s not going in my pocket. I can’t use it to buy cars and vacations. It’s to keep my business alive and can only be used on payroll and utilities. Every dollar had to be accounted for and I will be responsible to prove I used it only for what the government say I’m allowed to use it for and only so much if forgivable and the rest is just a loan. So that money that you think is going right in our pockets is just a life line to help us stay open and a good portion will have to be paid back. Just an FYI. Hope your healthy. Be safe and take care

the guy who bought the nice guitar and let his friend use his other one is actually a SAINT, because im a guitarist and i know how much of a nightmare it is to learn on a really nice guitar, i tried to learn with a dean pantera dimebag signature with a floyd rose bridge which was 900 dollars, restringing it was a nightmare, it was 24 fretted instead of the usual 22, and just too complicated at the time so i settled on buying a les paul special model 2 for 150 dollars, SO much easier to use, restring, and play in general because it was marketed and made FOR beginners. Kudos to that man

WTF, 5/5 for wanting to do an online show? I don't see the problem in asking for that to save a business. Presumably people might actually care about the place they work and want to see it survive.

    • @Jason-hm1sc
      @Jason-hm1sc 4 года назад +8

Agree and disagree. I don't know if the owners were pushing this or if it was the manager. But will say the online show is a great idea. However staff should be paid IMO unless they explicitly say don't worry about it. Just saying come back to work however you're not getting paid is an asshole move. Some of these people may be in serious financial trouble.
I don't know if they could do something like say a percentage would go to the staff and another would be used to keep the doors open. Clarify the theater needs x minimum to stay open, the rest will go to staff and anything over y amount will be used to support another desperate program. All while maintaining the fact that staff will get a portion regardless.
      edit:
Giving the manager the benefit of doubt maybe the heart was in the right place but not the thought process. 3/5 if that is the case. Really need more info.

While I would normally agree, I do not agree because of the current situation. Covid makes a hard time for a lot of businesses.
Yes, it's sad that they had to fire the staff, but you're basically demanding the owners to ruin themselves for unforeseeable circumstances - which would result into the same dire financial straits they're into now.
And also: It's kind of shocking to hear you asking why someone would try and help their boss of 25 years. I'm pretty sure that if you stay in a company for 25 years, then you've become friends or even like a second family, as it was the case with my father and his work. If you're not, then you're doing something wrong or you're pretty dumb... But I guess that's the thinking way of today's generation: Just fuck bosses, because they're bosses, no matter what. They've been helping you for 25 years to get through your life and now that they are struggling, just fuck them as you don't get anything out of them anymore.
