Have you heard any word about Yamaha replacing the P125 with a new keyboard? i.e. the P115 got replaced by the P125, etc. Thanks!
maybe you can make a video for (1) what if you want most realistic keys, which piano to get... (probably FP-30X)... and (2) if you want good sound right from the speakers, which piano to get (probably XE20 and CT-S1 and which is better?) (3)... maybe something else... like best piano sound? (probably the DGX670 CFX sound... and then the XE20 Steinway sound)

About 9 months ago I tried a P-125 for the first time. Its GHS action could be better, but felt much nicer than the GHS on the P-45, which I also tried (again) at the same time. So guys, don't judge the P-125 action by the inferior implementaion on the P-45.
125 sounds very soft and soft!!!!!!! But when i hear the 30x.. the smooth connection between sounds to sounds... wow.. just felt so soft.. awesome..
The key action of the old FP30 is what sold me.

I think FP30 was already better than P125, this FP30x upgrade made it even better. Actually FP30x got much closer to FP60 (not X, the previous one).
Agreed. I own an FP-30 as well. I tried the P-125 and to my dismay, it was still leagues below the FP-30 despite being a later release. The thing that stands out to me about the FP-30X other than the increased sounds and polyphony is definitely the ability to stream songs via bluetooth, which is what I've always wanted to do with my FP-30 but is unfortunately not possible.
Thank you! The last digital keyboard I read had weighted keys and a great touch was an enormous disappointment to me as someone who played an analogue piano for years. I bought but could never get into using the thing, even though I'm really keen to explore different sounds. Looking into making another purchase now. Details like the mechanism and realistic texture on the keys are things I'm realising, as I watch this, that I never appreciated but made all the difference. Great review, many thanks!

I always prefer the Sound of the Roland. I like Yamaha, Korg and Alesis, I own all four and find the Roland has the sound most like a good grand piano. My old Roland HP330 has died and I need to replace it. I have used workstations and wouldn't mind having some of that on a piano but don't want to sacrifice the piano sound. Any recommendations? Love your videos.
I do agree with you about those comparisons.
You should also try Nord Pianos. The only digital piano that sounds better than Roland in my experience. But the price is quite expensive. So yeah, Roland is always overall better to go with
I think Yamaha's P-125 piano sound is a bit better than Roland FP-30X, but I ended up choosing the FP-30X because of the action. The P-125 action is so springy, while the FP-30X action feels very similar to an upright's piano action. Also the FP-30X seems to be more sensitive to touch intensities and you can tell by the sound, more similar to a real piano than the P-125 which.

The P-125 is 3 years old, so it will be replaced in a few months. Will be interesting to see if Yamaha introduces a 3-sensor action and includes new/more samples. Then they'll reclaim the throne from Roland. Also I expect to see a replacement for the Kawai ES110 soon. So whilst the FP-30X may be the best digital piano for USD $600 in Feb 2021 - it probably won't be the best anymore if you are watching this video after July/August 2021.

Thanks for the vids, mate! Appreciate that you play the same pieces, as a beginner it helps me get some baseline differentiation between the tones. I ended up paying the little extra for the FP-30X, as much as I like acoustic Yamaha pianos and drums, Roland seems to have the digital/electric/however-you'd-like-to-call-it segment on lockdown. My e-drums are also Roland, fantastic instruments.
So excited to be getting mine soon and learning to play. Thanks for going over the FP-30X in great detail with your recent vids!
Thank you....Just ordered my Roland FP 30 x yesterday....I am so curious about the feeling of the Keys. About 11 years ago I bought my last Digital Piano ( Korg C-520) . So excited to test the Roland myself. I always love to play the Piano, but my Korg C 520 Keys make clacking noises...with Headphones it is still great...I turned 50 last year and as a Child and young adult I took Piano Lessons for 10 years. I always missed my old upright Piano and the feeling of the Keys on it. I hope I will revive my Passion to play the Piano again. Your Video made me so excited and curious ! Thank you ! The Yamaha P125 piano sound matches very closely to my Yamaha Grand and I do prefer it to the Roland. I hear an strange, phasey wavering sound with the Roland acoustic piano sample but the other sounds definitely sound better on the Roland. I wish the Yamaha had the Roland action...
Sound preference has much to do with psychoacoustics
Yamaha has a very beautiful melodic sound Indeed. Roland sounds more realistic though. About the keys, I dunno what people see in this stiff keys on Roland. They are heavier than a real acoustic piano.
I had a similar experience with the FP50. Didn't respond at all how I expected, so I spent a bit more and bought the P-255 instead. As Jeremy says, it can be down to psychoacoustics. But think about what "supernatural" means. Literally: Over-natural. Exaggerated? Roland may be compensating for lost sound that pure sampling doesn't capture, or it may be trying to be too clever. Dunno. Some of my favourite pianists play/played Roland RD pianos, and the early ones weren't so "realistic", but they made them sound fantastic. Would I have enjoyed playing their pianos? Dunno. I try not to get too hung up on issues of realism. You either enjoy playing a piano or you don't, and you can't tell just by playing a few notes, or by hearing someone else play it.

Which did you get?
The Yamaha P-125 has been superseded by the Yamaha P-225. I recently purchased A Roland FP-30X at an actual store in my community. Both the FP-30X and the P-225 were listed at $699, which is an online price. I would say, these instruments, along with the Casio Privia PX-S1100 represent the top of the entry level price tier. What you want to get depends on what you want to do. My past experience, though limited, was on acoustic piano and acoustic piano emulation was what I wanted.
Partly based on this review I went to guitar city to purchase the 30x. I was surprised I liked the Yamaha action better. The 30x felt like they overdid the escapement step when pushing keys and it felt clunky. Also liked sound of Yamaha better and there are kids keyboards with less cheap feeling buttons than Roland.

There was a sound that was bothering me on roland fp 30x , I returned it and ordered the p125 I'm excited and hope it has a nice sound.
I agree. I played both in the shop for about 2 hours. At first I preferred the fp-30x, but eventually liked the p-125's action more. Also preferred the latter's sound more. However, I miss the bluetooth connectivity
My teacher uses a grand piano and if you think a Roland action is clunky you should try a tired 30 year old grand piano. However when you hit staccato chords on it, it staccatos you back.
@@jelomirabcede4851 Such a difficult choice. Do you still like the Yamaha? We had one for years and some sounds on it are unmatched by the others. I have a Roland now and play almost always with headphones. The grand piano sound grows on you until the other brands sound off.

The Roland speakers are spectacular
The FP-30X adds 1/4" lineouts which weren't available on the prior FP30 I believe. I've used the P125 the last few years and think it is a strong improvement over the prior models (P95, P105 etc.) It sounds very clear and the speakers are improved. I am well aware many people do prefer the key action on the FP30 series- and do not dispute that. However, the P125 is around 7 pounds lighter than the Roland. I think both boards are very good for their price point and it depends on the user. i.e. I am willing to sacrifice some of the action to have something more portable.

Samples beats modelling in my opinion. I think there’s a special type of warmth and reverb that comes from the wood cabinet of a piano that v-piano or supernatural hasn’t surpassed yet… not to mention piano is a percussion instrument which makes it too complex for any sort of wave theory

I got a Alesis recital couple months ago with a thought "what if I won't like piano?" - it turns out, I am wrong, thou I am still a quite new piano student. learning is painful, as soon as I "concur" a practice, the melody + a sense of achievement bring me joy and a smile, helps my winter blue.. the recital keys are kinda flimsy, it looks like a toy after I saw and played my friend's real piano LOL Im not competing with friends, it's just a feeling that when you try something delish, its hard to go back. is fp30x the best choice in $750ish range?
The FP-30X is a compelling purchase at this price category. Keep striving!

The Roland makes me feel all the feels 😢😅!! Don't know why? Is it maybe the additional polyphony and key velocity grading??
I have mixed feelings coz I'm not a big fan of UI offloading to companion apps, but sure, a BT connection may make the experience better. Anyway, excellent new product overall, and excellent review!
This is petty. An app could be an accessory but not a requirement. At least they should provide specs and also a PC version.
These App stuffs make these products feel like a disposable items with built-in obsolescence. Tomorrow Apple/Google might block the account and then you'll have no apps and lose functionality just like that.
I bought the P-121 and the CF piano has a very classy unique bright tone which I love v much.

Love both pianos. Yamaha is definitely brighter sound. If I were playing Coldplay or Fleur Elise every day I would get one. But I’ve always loved the Roland sounds after using an RD300 years ago.
You can change the EQ on the FP30X to brighten the sound.

Thank you for your kind words and appreciating my effort.
The problem I have with the Roland's acoustic piano sound is the bass is a bit too big, unlike most acoustic pianos, and the treble is a bit too sweet. In terms of hearing the tones in chords and harmonies, that's where Yamaha does well because it isn't a booming bass piano sample yet the lower bass is quite deep and strong but it still offers a clarity in the bass and tenor that is pretty unique in digital pianos (and maybe in acoustic pianos as well). But the Roland is a wonderful digital piano and both Roland and Kawai gives more bang for the buck in the lower to mid digital range than does Yamaha. What Yamaha gives you is its signature Yamaha sound, at least for acoustics, and you know the GHS will last, even if it gets noisy and somewhat rattly as it ages. Time for a new low-end action Yamaha and a bit more features to make it feature-wise more competitive with Roland and Kawai and Casio. Now for the other sounds, they sound fine on both. Just different versions of them. Also I trust Roland's durability and quality control over Kawai (digital only) and think it is on par with Yamaha. One other thing is I don't think Yamaha likes Roland uses (X) at the end of the names of their pianos. That's something Yamaha has uses in their acoustic and digital pianos (CFX, CX, SX) and on the digital side (N1X, NU1X, N3X).

Thanks for making this comment Benjamin. I will check out my piano to see if it is similar. It is an HP603A so it might not have these vices. I'm not sure if it can be changed in the piano designer app. I must also drop the metronome volume.

I purchased this piano in the white from Amazon and have had it for about a week now and really trying to like and keep it. Prior to purchasing watched all of the you tube shootout’s reviews, and comparison videos beforehand. In every case the audio quality was pristine and had a clarity and sparkle throughout the entire range of the keyboard. This clarity seems to be absent from my unit with the exception of the top three octaves. It’s hard to describe as I can hear that the quality of the samples are there, they simply lack that pristine audio quality heard in the videos. It’s certain that those pianos in the videos are coming out of the line out outputs and running through some EQ and additional signal processing. Thinking that perhaps it was the acoustics in my room I took the unit out and played it in church today with no improvement in the sonic quality, so I’m thinking of returning it and purchasing the RD 88. I already own the RD2000 so am certainly able to make a comparison but it’s too big to haul back and forth. I got this piano for the portability. Has any other owners experienced what I’m talking about?
Do you happen to be using headphones or the integrated speakers? I plan on getting the FP-30X soon and I'm curious if the speakers are what makes it muddy to you or if you experience the same thing with good headphones.

As he speaks of the rd 88 which is from Roland I suppose he also means the fp30x.
About piano acoustic sound, I think that both these two piano has beautiful samples, but Roland one for me plays more round and definite! About other features like the keyboard and its keys Roland has an higher level of quality!!!! Escapement, triple sensor key, ivory like refinement, more sound to select( 56 no other piano in this range offers so many) and a marvellous and powerful 11 w x 2 loudspeakers!!!!!! It's enough to play in a middle range room without to connect to external ampli. In this video the comparison of Church organ voice put in evidence a better quality of P125 sample, which is effectively a huge voice and surely one of the winner point of this Yamaha product! But I think that Jamie has used the wrong voice, 'cause it must be the main Church organ voice that's better by far!!! This we listen to here in the video is more an harmonium like rather than a organ pipe!!!!

Can you tell me if it is possible , with the "secret" function, to play audio from a computer to the piano speakers through the USB connexion ? (Usage would be : FP-30X MIDI thru USB -> Computer VST -> VST Audio -> FP-30X USB -> FP-30X Speakers)
I believe I did mention that the audio is transmitted and review via USB. Yes. Both ways. 😉

One of my main selling points is the onboard speaker quality and how the sound is expressed and fills the room. When I bought the yamaha p45 i was disappointed by how muddy and “muffled” it sounds because of the speaker system and because they pointed downwards (I had a keyboard stand)zNow I am unsure between the P125 or the roland fp30x. When you said the yamaha is more nuanced, what exactly did you mean? Is it more or less muddy sounding than the roland?

The P125 has tweeters which handle higher frequencies and a larger cone for the low frequencies so the speakers are a little more detailed.
Are those raw speakers? Like the built in speakers?
When it comes to Digital Piano, Yamaha P125 is more natural piano sounds with its using CFX piano... Unlike roland FP30X piano sounds sounds more like robotic
It's a case of psychoacoustics. At these price, you get high quality sampled acoustic pianos. They are all sounds of a real piano, it's just a matter of preference. Just like how many of my students for play on cheap Yamaha U1 upright acoustic pianos don't like the sound of a $250,000 Bosendorfer grand. 😉
P125 uses the CFIIIS sample, not the CFX.
I agree, roland is not so natural as Yamaha sounds.
@@fabriziop8044 since I started to listening to this roland, I had the feeling that it sounds more like a real piano to me. I had two yamaha and thought they sounded great, but once I played keyscape in my DAW, I realized how bad my piano yamaha sounded.

Great video Jeremy I love your channel! I had gotten my first piano, the Casio cdp-s350 because of your videos, and im thinking of upgrading to the roland FP-60X, mainly for recording purposes. Would you say its a good idea or are other options more viable?
My main concern is tone, being able to customize my sound more, and good recording audio. My cdp does fairly well but after a year and I half I can hear the difference between my keyboard and other higher end pianos so I'm thinking of switching.

Have you considered hooking up to your computer and using a virtual piano, since you are only recording? They are supposed to be the best.
@@Zoco101 virtual instruments, at least for great sounding ones, can be pricey and thats for each piano or virtual instrument. I think its better to buy a great piano with extra sounds and I would prolly spend as much or less than buying vst's you know? Also I do enjoy playing out loud and letting the instrument ring throughout the house

Good info! Roland needs hire some marketing people to highlight these features. I'm curious as well if the RPU-3 Stand Alone 3 Pedal accessory would work on the FP-30X. It's mentioned for the FP-60X, but just barely even pictured. I'm down to Yamaha DGX670, Roland RD-88, or the FP-60X. I will get one of these boards this year. It is sad that none of them have a Din-Midi output. Otherwise you would have a great piano plus a great master keyboard for expanders and synth modules.
There are stand alone USB Midi hosts for like €30. These add DIN Midi to any keyboard that only has USB MIDI.
Note these are different from USB Midi interfaces for PCs which do the opposite conversion.
A lot of new instruments don't have DIN inputs/outputs anymore.
You can get a converter if you want. It's not as convenient, but you have the option at least.
Yes it is sad, but these models are supposedly only one notch above entry level portable pianos. I think it's sadder that they haven't got any screen at all. In the case of the Roland FP30X that is a bigger problem, since we hear that bluetooth connections to tablets are not all that dependable. If we want rich functionality coupled with a great action, we have to spend €1300+.

Excellent review on these keyboards can you tell me what tune you where playing at the opening. I recognize the melody but for the life of me I can’t remember what band played this.
A month ago I was deciding precisely which one to buy, if Roland, or Yama. A tough decision, but in the end, I bought Yamaha.
It seems to me that the sound is more natural, which is a decisive factor for me. Although yes, the feel of the key is not as accurate as a grand piano.
But hey, really, we can't lose sight of the fact that they are digital keyboards.
And mainly, the ease that the Yamaha gives to access its controls, and, in addition, it is slightly cheaper.
Roland produce great action but they need to work on their sampling technologies. I find their sound is the least natural sounding of the brands.

The key action is definitely nicer on the Roland, but the onboard controls on the Yamaha are way better, the Smart Pianist app still smokes the Roland app (and yes the Roland app has bluetooth, but the connection drops constantly), the Yamaha rhythms are implemented way better, and they're not the same price, at least in Canada: Roland FP-30x=$1100, Yamaha P125=$850. I had an FP-30 (not the FP-30x) for 6 months and traded it back on a P-125 and I'm way happier
The action on FP models is unrealisticly heavy. Like they have glue attached under the keys. Making It painful to play

If the connection drops it is your equipment. I salvaged my Older Yamaha with a Roland Wm1. Yamaha have always been poor on Midi they are Apple centric and could not be bothered keeping their apps up to date with the latest Midi standards so my $75 Yamaha MDBT is now junk.

Finally, a Roland in my price range with good amplification. I can't wait to put my Yamaha PSR-140 back on the shelf. Bet you didn't know any PSR-140's even exist anymore....LOL.
It was purchased for my kids at Christmas time years ago....they never used it. I pulled it out of the box a month ago and decided to learn piano.
I think the Roland will make me look more like a serious professional and a winner even if I play like a bad amateur and a loser...LOL. Looking the part is half the battle. Now where is my tuxedo?

Same, I wanted to get the Fp-10 as it has the same key action and if I stick with it I will upgrade later anyways. Sucks having to spend extra money for something that probably won't be noticeably better.

@@Elazarko I can't understand why manufacturers don't make more 73-note pianos (and even 61-note pianos) with proper weighted actions. There's some kind of snobbery involved it seems. As I mentioned in another post, touring classical musicians pay to have 88-note weighted pianos reduced to even fewer than 73 notes, so they can get them on aircraft and practise in their hotel rooms. I have a sprung 61-note keyboard for special situations and for effects. I've done gigs where an 88-note piano simply doesn't fit on the stage, so we couldn't use the piano on those gigs.

Korg D1, Roland FP 30x, or Yamaha P125? Seems the D1 gets rave reviews but no one puts it on the best digital piano to buy in 2021. Is the Korg D1 still relevant?

I would add for some overseas markets the 'similarly priced' statement isn't true. The cheapest price for the FP30x here in Australia I've seen is 1099 AUD. The DGX670 cheapest price I've seen is1699 AUD. The DGX670 comes with a stand and pedal unit but I'd rather it was optional and the piano was cheaper.
Those 2 was a great keyboard for practice and for band or worship...

@@Mawamo2227 If you don't like "pushing" the keys with your guts instead of playing them, go with the P125. That's my advice. Roland FP keys are too heavy. Heavier than an acoustic piano.

Are you using a sample for both pianos in the video? They both sound more like chimes than an actual Piano.
