You mentioned old people give to the unmarried people money, maybe 10 times of Hazza received, this situation often is from parents/grandpareants but for his workmates who giving 50 RMB I suppose is quite okay.
When I first arrived in China, the culture of giving Red Packets was quite awkward for me, because in the UK usually gift physical objects, and rarely give cash directly. At first, my natural reaction was to feel that I should refuse the Red Packets, especially from those that I am not so close to - They would then insist that I should take them, I would try and decline, and we would go back a forth until eventually I accepted. After some time I became familiar with the custom, and now give out tons of Red Packets myself every year!
I went through a very similar process.. and I also give out a lot of red packets too, like to the guards in my building just to show thanks for the hard work they have done all year! It is nice to try and get involved in the local customs. Thanks for commenting and sharing your story!
