    • @Hazza_Harding
      @Hazza_Harding  3 года назад +18

      In some ways, China is open-minded, because it is open to reform. Reform is change. Change is an acceptance that things need to improve. China is doing that all the time - this needs to be commended and acknowledged. In other areas, China is still quite conservative, but overall, it is possible here to live your life the way you want and just go about life. Chinese people are pretty open-minded when it comes to new ideas too, which I like.

    • @Hazza_Harding
      @Hazza_Harding  3 года назад +3

      Yeah - honestly, things are improving here day by day. China is a MASSIVE country. If your goal is to find negativity, you'll find it. That is just a mathematical fact. With 1.4 billion people, there's always going to be a minority of people that aren't happy - but a minority of 1.4 billion is still a huge number. However, if you go into it with a balanced attitude, you'll find that most people you interact with are happy with their lives, or at least satisfied. And the government here does respond to grievances from the public - that is why their satisfaction rate is so high.

    "There are always more solutions than problems!". I am going to write that down, Cheers Harry always informative. I was only in China for about three weeks but I like to think of it as Newton's Law, 'For every action there is an equal or opposite reaction'. • @Hazza_Harding
      @Hazza_Harding  3 года назад +6

      Yeah - or, as my good old mum would say, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.” And I’ve realized over the years that getting angry or upset usually only hurts yourself - it doesn’t really hurt others. In fact, sometimes getting angry is exactly the reaction others are hoping for, so losing your cool means others have won.

      you 're right! I am also in UK. I made an appointment for my language test in an agency two months ago. Because I live far away(I need 45 minutes by bus, 1.5 hours by train and 10 minutes on foot to get there),so I chose the afternoon. However, the confirmation email I received did not specify the time of the test. On the morning of the test, I received a phone call from the examiner asking where I was, so I knew that my test was changed to the morning. I told them that my test was in the afternoon, but the examiner said If I can't get to the test site within 30 minutes, I can only make a new appointment, but no one has informed me that the time has been changed. I called the intermediary and they said that it was the problem of Cambridge University. Cambridge University said, "Oh, you wasnt book the test on our website, you need to find an intermediary to solve it." finally, two months later, no one was responsible for my problems I'm very upset that I've lost 200 pounds of examination fees and dozens of pounds of train tickets by other peoples problem. However, I've met many such things in Britain. Eg,in China, after moving , I can make an appointment to install the network cable within one hour. In the UK, it usually takes two weeks. If there are special circumstances, it may take another month to complete the network.....So in the UK I usually not bother to complain because there is no result

      @@anonymintheworld9781 Network cable takes about 2 weeks in Australia too. One time it took 4 weeks because the technician just didn't come and they have to rebook it so ended up waiting double time. Things are laggy here, only started noticing 5 years ago (it wasn't always like this). Before Covid I travelled a bit and I seriously I don't understand where my tax payer's money is going towards to... Trains are shit, train stations are dirty, internet is shit, airport looks kinda run down and you still have to catch a bus to your terminal. I was at the business class Qantas lounge in Sydney and the carpet, furniture, and even food are crap. Carpet is stained, looked filthy and sticky. walls are cracked and stained, furniture are mixed matched and looks like something you get from garage sales.

    One of the reasons why incidences like this still happen in China is because the Chinese never really had similar problems in their past like what we in the west have had, slavery of black people, discriminations of the minorities, racist parties so on and so forth. I think this is more of a problem caused by ignorance and insensitivity rather than race. Not trying to justify what they did, but I think the cause of the problem is different. @@Hazza_Harding “XX only”这种告示和“No XX”还是有本质区别的。后者可以说是歧视了,前者还是有店主自己的考量。比如东京“Japanese only”的店听你会说日语或者有日本朋友带进去还是比较乐意接待的。这种就不属于不友好的范畴,店里很可能是之前出过外国人因为语言障碍而发生的不愉快,比如点菜算账的误解。如果真的是因为种族面孔而写下的,那这个店该罚。从你回复我的中文水平来看,我认为这家店没有任何理由拒绝你进去消费。

I'm sorry to say it but "No foreigners" in this case is more like "If you don't speak Chinese and do drugs here, please go somewhere else". As you mentioned Guangzhou shouldn't reject foreigners because its a international city, I don't see Guangzhou is more "international" than Tokyo. If Tokyo can, so can Guangzhou.

    You did the right thing, the government and the restaurant corrected the mistake. The fact is back in the days 1930-40th some westerners in China posted signs in front restaurants, shops, bars saying “no dogs and Chinese allowed go inside”. Note: These westerners were in China and telling Chinese cannot go in. They were comparing Chinese with dogs. How horrible was that! This type of humiliation is imbedded in people’s memory. Today in US, Australia, and some Europeans countries, politicians are still discriminate Chinese without any consequences. They did not show any sympathy for people of Wuhan only to blame Chinese. It’s understandable some people are angry. Mistakes are mistakes that need to be corrected.

How was it in 2010, 2000, 1990 etc in terms of: transportation, telephone, communication, housing, foreign travel, food supply, beggars, crime, homelessness, poverty, etc. China continues to embrace Kaizen (改善)(かいぜん)"improvement". I think your way of solving the issue is applicable everywhere in China. How to control anger and frustration to solve problems sensibly and rationally is always recommendable. Chinese has an old saying called "和气生财“. With this regard, Guangzhou and Shenzhen are better at dealing things like this than other provinces, such as those in the middle part of China. Particularly like what you said, they want to build multicultural and harmonic city images for the world. However, you did teach/admonish Chinese people a lesson about racism, which is rampant everywhere at this moment, which should not exist in any circumstances. Hazza, you have become Chinese in your problem solving technique. Chinese people are not confrontational and need to save face. You have won my respect. I married a White Canadian woman who would have gone it to the restaurant and lodge a loud complaint. If she sees White Canadians discriminate against Chinese Canadians, my wife would also viciously attack those racist Caucasians. There would be the angry exchange of words leaving everyone upset. I hate to sound racist myself, but having spent my life in Canada, I observe that non-Asians and Caucasians in general are very confrontational when they feel slighted. Unfortunately these Westerner living in China sometimes forget that they are in a different culture. In Canada, I have heard people say that Chinese people should complain and voice their anger more when they are being treated unfairly. Hazza, have you been back into that restaurant to see if the staff treat you well? I guess you probably don't want to give them your business. Personally, I don't blame you. As a Chinese Canadian, I am embarrassed by your experience.

      To be honest, I haven’t been back. I think it is a wonderful and fascinating experience when you try to assimilate into another society and you realize that some of your instincts change over time. I think that if you really open yourself up to another culture, you can actually absorb the positives, and I find that you learn the most when you take yourself outside of your comfort zone. Thanks for the insightful comment.

    I really appreciate your story of solving the issue with that discriminatory sign. If this situation happens in Australia, people there would most likely follow the same procedures to deal with the issue. You did this way because you don’t have bias attitude forward to China. If this happens to someone who has bias view about China or has the mentality that everything in China is negative cannot be changed as long as China doesn’t do what the US imposes onto it. That person would not go through the same procedures, which is known to everyone, to deal with the same situation. Instead, that person would take a picture of it and post it on social media site and use it as another excuse for his or her anti-China comments to make China look bad. So to me, it is not only how you deal with such issues happen in China, but change the whole mindset about China and Chinese people. If people from the West don’t respect China and Chinese people like they do to their countries in the West, I think the anti-China trend will be continued and worse and worse. The root cause of all those baseless accusations about China and Chinese people is people from the West led by the US cannot accept the fact that China is actually doing well and can do better. Unless they accept this unstoppable trend, the situation will get worse and worse. And of course, the corporate controlled media from the West constantly come up with bias and baseless accusations toward to China on a daily basis is an root causes of misinformation about China.

    Was this anti-foreigner sentiment because of the fear covid-19 or bias against foreigners? It is strange that these signs appear now and not during pre-covid periods.
