  • We are back on the road in our Escape Trailer 21 after getting our Ford F150 repaired. Our first stop is Maryhill Washington located on the Columbia River Gorge, one of the best rv campgrounds in washington state! In this video, we share a few of the many things you can do when staying at this location and why it is a spot we return to whenever we have the chance. We'll also share some information about the Maryhill State Park that we camped at including why we chose our particular site and what amenities you will find in early November.

There is a commercial RV park next to Maryhill called Peach Beach. In my view it is a second best choice, but still a good. choice if you want to visit the area

Heading upriver on Hwy 14 is a wonderful scenic drive (and definitely better than heading downriver on that side...). On the other side of the river, the historic highway is also a beautiful drive (both ways)... and I always think of my dad, who used to drive log trucks on the old highway in the 1930's.
If you are ever thinking of camping on the Oregon side at Viento State Park with an RV... I hope you love trains, as there's a railroad close by and one across the river. I love trains and fall asleep easily, so I loved it; my wife is a light sleeper and, let's say it wasn't her best night of sleep. It didn't help that the guy in the next campsite got really mad and threw all his camping gear into his rig and pulled out at 2 am, either...
We visted the Maryhill museum years ago and they had a wonderful collection on display of chess sets. The two coolest ones were The Flintstones and The Simpsons sets, but they were all pretty cool.
I'm enjoying your trip, keep up the videos!

HI J. Patrick, thanks for watching!! It's a gorgeous drive for sure and I prefer it over the highway on the Oregon side. I sleep with earplugs so the trains don't bother me too bad LOL.

The Mary Hill Museum rocks! I loved the bazillion chess sets downstairs, too. And the plethora of plaster casts of famous baroque bronze works. It's a crazy collection but worth the visit. My friend and I spent 4 hours looking around!

The Columbia River! Loved that opening music, dancing in my chair. Thanks for the tip about the Maryhill campground. I haven't camped there but I've driven both sides of the river and find the Washington State side more beautiful. But Oregon is beautiful too. Ok, aargh, the Maryhill "stonehenge" is no where near an exact replica ... the outer ring of stones is missing, truly not even there, doesn't even exist on this "replica" in Washington. Some of the inner rings and stones aren't positioned correctly, and a geologist friend of mine tells me that this Maryhill site is positioned incorrectly relating to the sun and moon. Now, I admit, I don't know any of that first hand but I hear it from trusted online sources and my trusted geologist friend. AND, I was there at the Maryhill "stonehenge" and found that the "stones" are simply concrete castings and are all the same, they aren't stones at all. The idea of a memorial is super, but yikes this didn't really do it. Ah, but the views across the river are stupendous, and there's a great vineyard/winery just to the east of this stonehenge. The Maryhill Museum, on the other hand, is stunning! It truly is world class and yet it seems it's one of the best kept secrets for residents of Washington and Oregon. None of my friends have been there. I'll drag them down there, don't worry. :-) Super videos, you gals, great info. Thank you! You're the best. :-)

No Ann, you're the best!!!!! No, it's not an exact replica but it's what the information board said in front of faux Stonehenge. I think at the time it was built so long ago Sam Hill thought it was an exact replica of what England Stonehenge would have looked like before parts of it crumbled. Anyway, your are totally correct on that front!! Your friends will love you forever if you take them to the Maryhill area!!

Welcome back to the Columbia River Gorge, our home! What a great time of year to be coming through. I don't think we've had better fall colors that this year in a very long time. There is also a smaller, more quaint WA state park just up river - Columbia Hills (aka Horse Thief Butte). I would say quiet but with train tracks on both sides of the river... Horse Thief also has some great native American petroglyphs. Great wineries on both sides of the river. Maryhill Museum is wonderful but is closed between Nov 16 and Mar 14. fyi: Maryhill Winery no longer does a concert series. Safe travels!

Thanks for watching and for the comment!! It was really a nice time to drive through the Gorge! We'll put Columbia Hills on our list for next time. Good to know that Maryhill doesn't do concerts anymore
