The Air Force brought me to Alaska in the summer of 1984. Stationed at Elmendorf AFB I joined 2 other AF members on a moose hunt that fall. We hunted 45 miles north and east of Anchorage. One of my partners shot a 42" spread bull which was legal at that time in that area. I now became a pack mule hauling that moose out from a glacier fed valley 4 miles out to the road. Took us 3 trips each and between the alder brush and devils club I swore I would never moose hunt again! I lied as next season I solo hunted in the exact same spot but fortune was not on my side. Earned my pilots license while at Elmendorf and flew all over Alaska and loved every minute of it. Returned with my wife for our 25th anniversary but have not made it back to hunt again! Still have my health but I am not getting any younger so perhaps I can make it one of these years. Watching your videos and others the flame is still there and as I tell everybody once you experience Alaska part of you always remains! Chris "Hodagtrapper" Lenard

Hi Troy. The Swede commenting all the way from Norway here! I’ve been watching your films and I love that one with two 70’ bulls on the same trip. Amazing. I used to hunt moose in Sweden, shot 63 moose’s in a couple of years before I moved to Norway and my life changed a lot and I haven’t hunted since then. And yes, we have a completely different type of hunting in Sweden also shooting cows and calfs, and we use trained dogs to find and make the moose stand with shooters around the hunting area if it tries to run for it. I had two great dogs and they actually taught me to hunt moose, not the other way around, and my first dog was so intelligent we actually talked to each other and he understood. I have never seen anything like that again, and I never will. I have dreamt about Alaska since I was a little kid, watched movies and photos, read stories, and I will come one day, that is a promise and I keep my promises. A 70’ moose on a DIY hunt somewhere in a remote area, and then a 10+ foot coastal brown bear down at the peninsula, that is my dream. I have searched the internet for films and photos of the biggest moose’s ever taken and have some kinda theory that the western parts of Alaska is where the biggest trophies are taken. But if I ask you; Could you make a video showing what parts/units of Alaska that are more likely to produce big trophy moose and what kinda terrain a hunter can expect in those different places/units? Is it wet marshes or windy mountains? Or great woods or open tundra? How’s the wolf and bear population doing in different areas/units and what impact does it have on the moose population? I know that guys like you normally are very careful about recommending certain things but I see it more as you giving outsiders like me a better knowledge about Alaska that will help a lot choosing where to go on that dream hunt. A video about basic Alaska facts, wildlife and geographic sort of. That would make it easier to decide where to start checking things you’re taking about in this video. What say you? Is it possible! Thanks for fantastic films and for spreading true love for wildlife, nature and genuine hunting. Hunting is something that goes deep within your soul, it’s important to preserve the true meaning of hunting in today’s jungle of wannabes. Thank you Troy.
Awesome and thank you for your service! I served back in desert storm and understand the demands our service members endure to keep this great nation safe. Thank you! Troy
2/25/22 Elk hunter in the lower 48 looking to start my research into DIY moose hunting up there. Looks like I've found a key piece of my puzzle with your site. Thanks Joseph
Coastal Brown REQUIRE a LARGE caliber every time and that includes heavy grain bullets (200grn or bigger). Yes they can be killed with smaller calibers however you won't enjoy going into the alders to retrieve that giant bear...
Do you get involved at all with back country trips? Not specifically a hunting trip although it would be a little bit of it. I am getting ready to retire from my regular job and have long dreamed of spending time (a year or so) in the most remote areas AK has to offer. I would be interested in your thoughts
We have several around the house, and the 63 inch bull was made into a full body mount and shown at Safari International along with the other 70 inch bull shown in the video. :)
What is Cheap for you is the question. Some people cheap is 10K I can tell you this, you can buy Beef at the store for 1-10 of the cost. Take me for example, I bought a 140 thousand dollar airplane to go hunting with. However I grew up in Montana back in the day and we would drive the truck out into the hayfields and go hunting for a tank of gas.

Hey man thanks for reaching out all the way from Norway! Love hearing good feedback from you guys. I will be coming out this winter with more videos.
Thanks for the video. I just got up here with the Army in Fairbanks.

Justin Howard glad to help. We will continuously be putting out more courses like this one to help folks.
Happy hunting
Looking forward to booking my first moose hunt with 60inchclub
DIY hunt, for me, would not involve a plane. Thanks for the info though!

Assuming I buy a plot of land in Alaska, is it legal to hunt any animals thereupon without a permit?
It's not about who owns the land but what Unit you are hunting in and is it in city limits.
Do you get involved at all with back country trips? Not specifically a hunting trip although it would be a little bit of it. Wheres those 70's hangin
We have several around the house, and the 63 inch bull was made into a full body mount and shown at Safari International along with the other 70 inch bull shown in the video. :)
This makes it seem like Alaska hunting is an Impossible Dream
Why is that? There are many ways to hunt in Alaska.
Rest of em at my house
Thats where they all went... :) lol
So…. your telling me there is essentially no cheap way to do this…..
What is Cheap for you is the question. Some people cheap is 10K
