Sacramento State basketball has not found life at the Division 1 level to be particularly welcoming. The Hornets have a 32 percent winning percentage since making the jump in 1991 and have as many winning seasons as one-win seasons-two apiece.
A big reason for their lack of success starts with the team’s home. The Hornets Nest is awful. If it’s not the worst venue in college basketball, it is undoubtedly in the conversation. After years and decades of trying to find a new place to play, Sac State is set to move. Unfortunately, they may replace the most awful in college basketball with something worse.
In November, Sac State President Luke Wood announced that all indoor athletics would be moving to a new event center in The WELL, or the school’s student wellness facility. It is a gym, some intramural facilities and various offices. It is not a place where you would envision a basketball arena.
Of course, an arena doesn’t seem to be the plan. Instead, Wood explained the school would be adding temporary bleachers around The WELL’s largest basketball court which seems rinky-dink, even by Sac State’s standards.
Those hoping for the university to under promise and overdeliver shouldn’t hold their breath. CSUS has approved US$5.2 million for the project. This means it will be as bare bones as possible. When factoring in the need for other required add-ons, this new “arena” will most likely be nothing more than bleachers surrounding an intramural basketball court.

Wait, can we talk more about that full-court buzzer-beater shot??? Did it count?? And, they really played intramural flag football indoors at the Well?? Ouch! I've been to the Well as I did an event there when I had my corporate events business. Nice building, but yeah, over the Nest?? They have to have further plans beyond what is being reported.

So Sac St is just getting what UC Riverside has, a space to host basketball games in the student rec center!
What gets me is that in actual arena was supposed to be built when they built the Well. The president at the time came up with the fairytale, and use the money to tear down the old football field house, and build the current field house. That allowed. sac st to host many track and field events. The students have been paying fees to pay back the loan to build the Well since 2004 or 05. If you figure a 30 year loan, they have roughly 10 years until the loan for the Well Is paid off. Maybe then, they can use the fees, that are still going to be paid by the students, to finance the building of an actual arena!
I understand that the Kings owner is not very popular, they could get him $50 million to build an arena on campus, it might help with his image and popularity.

I doubt he would do that, if anything he would probably have them play in the G1C and only use the lower bowl seats. Not only that they can utilize public transit that way the city makes some money to
