The Gold Miners, Mountain Lions, and Surge never really had a chance. All were either in fledgling leagues, or in an established league that was only established in another country.
Original Sacramento Kings owner, Greg Lukinbill, started construction on a multi use pro stadium behind Arco 2. If you go to Google maps satellite view where Arco 2 used to be, you can still see the original concrete abutments. There was was actually a tunnel that connected the Arena to the stadium. Back in 1987, Lukenbill ran out of money and asked the City of Sacramento for 10 million dollar loan to finish the stadium. Compare that to the 500 million Sacramento spend on the Golden One center. Remember back in the late 80's the Giants were looking to move and the Raiders wanted LA. It was rumored that if Sacramento had finished that Stadium, the Giants and Raiders might have moved to Sacramento. I will never forget seeing Mayor Anne Rudin getting booed by a very loud crowd at a Kings game when she refused to help build that stadium. What could have been.
That was fun. Thanks for this. I was unaware of most these teams. But, dude, the River Rats hockey team playing outdoors. I thought these owners were smart. Good lord. Should have just built a rink at Discovery Park by the Garden Highway. At least there’s shade!
I was blindsided that Sacramento had Dante Culpepper and Dennis Green reunited in the mountain lions. As a football fan I never heard of them till the middle of that season. Mark Cuban was an investor in that UFL team.
There was another indoor soccer team from 2012-2016 called the Sacramento surge! Went to a game there. They were part of the Major arena soccer league🤘🏼
I loved this video! I grew up in Sacramento and remember going to to Surge games as a kid. This was a nice trip down memory lane remembering the teams that we've long forgotten about
Thankfully, the Kings are not a part of this video. And i had NO IDEA Shakeys was originally founded in Sacramento! I knew Tower Records was, but not Shakey's. So thanks for that bit of trivia!
You should do a video on the first arena the Kings played NBA basketball in when they arrived in 1985, fittingly in time for the team's 40th Anniversary. The end result of the venue shocked me when I read the Wikipedia entry on ARCO Arena I.
I once applied for a job at the California Department of Consumer Affairs just so I could go in and interview inside Arco Arena I. I was crushed when they never got back to me.
Really great vid! It was tough being a sacramento express fan. I feel like the failed league was kind of the nail in coffin on sacramento being a rugby hotbed during that time. The international test matches stopped coming here after that, and it feels like rugby regressed to even more niche now than when i played from 2005-08. Really love the rugby content on the channel. Maybe you could do one on the differenece between union and league and weigh the pros and cons of each. I only follow union but am curious to learn more about league as well

All but one occurred before Sacramento Republic FC’s 2014 United Soccer Leagues Pro Championship.
Would know anything about Club America playing the San Jose Earthquakes at Hughes Stadium in the mid-1970s. I have come across this a few times in doing some research for another project.
@@thetouchbackTis true. On June 13, 1974, the San Jose Earthquakes played Club America to a 1-1 draw before 7,000 at Hughes Stadium (link won’t paste).
Don’t ask why, have 3,800 pages (including links) documenting Sacramento’s (actually all Northern California’s soccer history - except MLS). Men’s and women’s. Indoor and outdoor. Professional and amateur (including universities. NCAA, NAIA & NCCAA). Beginning in 1902 with the San Francisco Soccer Football League (SFSFL). The oldest continuously operating soccer league in the US.
Great recently published read by fellow Sacramento soccer enthusiast / historian. Covers above teams, along with interesting insight and stores. “Not when, but if” by Evan Ream.
So those old Solons played outdoors in the heat of summer, in front of fans, that didn’t mind getting a little sun and heat. Yet today, Modern people are so “comfortable” ( weak) they cannot play or watch baseball at Sutter Health Park…
Do you mean we did stupid things in the past that were really harmful and have since learned not to do those things? Or are you saying you wish for mercury to still be used as medicine because people in the olden days were tough enough to take it? I hope you still use an outhouse, or else you'd be a real hypocrite.
@@thetouchback Hard times create strong people. Strong people create good times. Good times create people. And, weak people create hard times. The people that watched the Solons were hardy. They won two World Wars, and survived a Great Depression. Today’s generation cries and complains on videos. They think hardship is a little sun, while watching a game. The Greatest Generation stormed the beaches of Normandy and didn’t complain about the weather.
Of all your takes, this is the worst one yet. So, do you still use an outhouse? Where is your horse parked? What do you say to all those folks in the 1800s who thought that the generation that stormed the beaches of Normandy was soft because they didn't use saws to amputate limbs? You are literally bragging about a generation where some folks were fighting FOR segregation. A generation where many of those people who fought in the wars are now voting for individuals who openly admire dictators who they opposed in the war. Your comments ooze hypocrisy. Jack London was a racist. Seems like you may be one too yearning for the days of the great white hope.

Why don't you want to answer my questions? Why are you even using a computer since technology makes you soft? You are the type of person who would have sided with the British during the Revolutionary War. How dare those upstart Americans use pamphlets to promote their messages. They should be out tiling fields like their fathers thankful for the chance to pay taxes to the crown. Claiming that generation ended segregation is as laughable as it is wrong. They were the ones who were actively trying to prevent them from combat roles in World War II. And when they returned home, who were the folks aggressively attacking protestors in the South? They lived through segregation happening, but far too many of that generation fought it. You want me to read a history book. Your grasp of history seems to be far more tenuous despite your desire to return to the good ol' days. By the way, I assume nothing apart from the fact, you hold an affinity for a character created by a well-known racist and plagiarizer. That really says it all about your character.
The Monarchs for sure need it come back.

Sacramento had professional outdoor soccer in the 70's. The Sacramento Spirit, they playes ar Sac State. They were fairly popular.

Oh wow. Thanks for the little sport history. It would've been awesome if we got those team
My dad owns a Sacramento raiders t-shirt because apparently there was a brief moment where that was a consideration 😂

I would love to see an MLR team in Sacramento.
I agree Sacramento needs a Major League Rugby team and the rest of Northern California
Indoor soccer was awesome! Team Tennis was pretty fun to go to.
I was blindsided that Sacramento had Dante Culpepper and Dennis Green reunited in the mountain lions. As a football fan I never heard of them till the middle of that season. Mark Cuban was an investor in that UFL team.
They used to have a temporary outdoor ice rink in the back of the roller rink on Bradshaw, but I don’t know if it was called the Ice House
There was another indoor soccer team from 2012-2016 called the Sacramento surge! Went to a game there. They were part of the Major arena soccer league🤘🏼
I honestly hope Sacramento gets a team in the MLR. it would make more sense for the league then Hawaii.

Somehow the Sacramento Rebels didn't get sued by Warner Brothers for that logo lol

Sacramento Capitals RFC
Sacramento teams need to start realizing the Sac-Town is a terrible nickname
I've always felt that we should change our nickname to Mento-Loaf but it has gained zero traction, much like actual pimento loaf.

What about the Sacramento mountain lions? Btw Sacramento is literally hell on earth shit hole, not sure they deserve to have any teams
Gold River is weird
I did a tile job there
Lots of old people
No young people there
they all raised their children in the 90's, and most then retired... there... and never left.
Shakeys still in Oroville?
They do appear to still be open! Road Trip!!!!
Gold River is Rancho Cordova! Don't try to make yourself special
Gold Riverian here. Like the Touchback himself, we also don't acknowledge ourselves as being part of the rest of Sacramento.
