My wife wrecked her 2022 ninja 650 by hitting a pothole. It’s gray. But only the right side fairing had cracks in it. A little bondo and lots of sanding, and your videos thanks to you! Instead of spending $400-600 on fairings. Thank you sir!
Just a tip, when you go to use an orbital buffer, put the pad down on the compound and rub it in before turning it on. That way you don't sling the compound everywhere..
I have to admit when you started on the sanding I was skeptical you could get that orange peel to be smooth. That looked like a lot of work but kudos on that finish, I am impressed how well the paint turned out. Thanks for another lesson! Looking forward to seeing the completed bike.
Thanks man. That piece took me a little over an hour to do. Mostly due to setting up for the video, starting and stopping the cameras, syncing etc. you know how filming goes. The other piece I knocked out in less than half the time. Don’t know if you’ve seen it, but I put the fairings together to check color match and fit on the bike and put some pics on Instagram.
Dude....THANKS....I was a little skeptical at first because I tried what you suggested and it was working. Then I decided to add an extra step of sanding with 2000 grit because 1000 grit and 1500 grit was working to much and now....fckin amazing...THANKS MAN...wootwoot
Only suggestion I have to those that are watching is to get a better buffer with actual Cutting pads but I appreciate these videos on painting tips. I love the mequiars compound on car detailing. At the end of the day it came out great anyhow.
G'day! love your vids mate 💯👌 I'm getting close to spraying my ZZR1100 at home, and your vid has really helped me to feel less anxious about orange peel in the clear. Now i know how to sort it out if it happens. Watched all your parts to spraying the fairings. Nice work, some great tips 💯🙌 Keep the shiny side up out there mate 🤙Cheers! 🥃 (p.s. a few shots of whiskey makes motorcycle work more fun, am I right, or am I right!?)
Glad you found some useful info. I was nervous my first time spraying too. The best thing you can do is take your time, keep the correct distance, and make sure you overlap enough with light coats. ANd yes, whiskey makes everything more fun!
Help please! So I did some touch ups on my motorcycle with a aerosol spray paint can that is supposed to be the original paint. Well after untaping the areas I touched up, the paint is a bit darker than the original. So my question is this. If I sand it down and polish it will it match the rest of the bike?
That was a great series to watch. I'm looking to repaint my fiberglass track fairings, do you think i could follow your whole 4 part series for fiberglass or is a whole other process? Thanks!
On my black fairing i had a square decal which i removed now there is a dull square patch on the black fairing, will the mguires compound or polish work?
Cross hatch sanding works best for clear coats. That way you do not get too deep scratches and more uniformity for the final prep and polish. To protect your tabs it is best to use a foam sacrificial pad not hard surfaces. Just a few tips for ya young man. 3000 is where you Start the polishing, 5000 for final polish. Compound works too followed by a fine grit polish.
I'm in Bama and the sun is brutal on those cheap china fairings paint jobs. My YME candy Orange K7 gsxr 1000 looks terrible on the right side lol looks great on the left side. My problem is the Black parts have decals and they cleared over them and they faded too... good times to be had.
As long as you have 3 layers of clear coat on top of that decals you’ll be fine . Just start with 2000grit wet sand . Just don’t apply too much pressure .
Trademark note: Firstly, Thanks for the great tutorial videos. Unofficially and without bias I just thought to suggest the logo 'T' you have looks great but .... may be kinda like the T that's probably trademarked as a design by Tesla. Just a friendly suggestion it may be something to consider. Thanks again for the well documented work.
Appreciate the concern, but that 'T' was hand drawn by me around the contours of a photo I took of my Z650. The logo of which I have digital writes and trademarking for.
This is awesome, im painting my Ducati Monster again and if I had this video the first time I wouldn't be doing this again lol thanks for making it look easy! Since I don't have a powered polisher/waxer can I just do it by hand?
You could definitely do it by hand, but it'll take twice the amount of time and more elbow grease. Of course after compound and polish, your finish will look very nice and glossy, but of course machines provide a slightly better finish (less scratches showing). Make sure to keep rubbing in the compound/polish until all the product breaks down and all you see is the color of your fairings then you could wipe off the excess product. I'm in the middle of wet sanding and compound polishing ny own fairings so just sharing what I'm experiencing. LASTLY, don't put too much product on your rubbing pad, only like 3 penny size dots will do the job. Good luck!
@@hemalgiac thanks for the heads up, i just did the right side of my tank faring last night and it came out good but i only did one layer of the compound and one layer of polish, im assuming ill need to do at least 2 or 3 passes with both?? also i accidentally rubbed too hard on a corner piece with the 1500 grit wet sand paper and burnt through the clear coat and paint, so i had to tape it off and re spray....this might have set me back a day or two lol
@@hemalgiac wow i didnt know it removes paint, should i throw a wax on it after its all done? all i have is the compound and polish, should i wait to wax it or do it right after polish?
@@EvilEvo_3 yeah compound cuts a very thin layer of the clean coat to get rid of scratches and polish cuts it too. If you rub in too much, it could cut into your base coat, but chances are it won't happen. That's why you should put a generous amount per fairing, maybe 3 small dots on your polishijg pad per section on each fairing. You should always apply wax after you finish because wax protects the polish and gives it a nice mirror-like gloss. I put my wax on right after the polish.
Hey! Great job - lots of effort put in and it paid off! I was wondering if you think spaying a sandable primer and hitting it with some 800 and 1500 sandpaper before your coats of black would have made your job easier with the clear? Do you think a cheap spray gun would’ve given you a finer result and required less effort with sanding for a similar price?
Standard primer doesn't work well on ABS plastics. The Bulldog adhesion promoter acts as a primer, and allows the paint to flex and adhere better to plastic. A spray gun will always work better due to better atomization. But for ease and reference to the average DiYer, I chose to use the 2 stage aerosol.
Tremonte Makes sense. I kinda misexplained - You ended up having to sand down your first coats of black because of texture issues. Could you have sprayed a primer over the adhesive and sanded it down before the coats of black to avoid having to sand your colour? I’m wondering if the adhesive caused most of your orange peel issues. Would you be able to lay primer on the adhesive, as it isn’t directly on the ABS plastic?
@@TheHungoverCat Most of the texture was from the plastic itself, and from me spraying the adhesion promoter too heavy. I wouldn't recommend a sandable primer between the promoter and final topcoat.
I need to do this as someone told me to rub the clear coat in and it smeared and looks terrible , it's only got one coat on ( the messed up one) would I be best sanding it down gently and restarting the clear coat

very nicely explained. thank you
Subbed thanks to this 4 part series, thanks so much!
Thanks. I watched quite a few videos and that simplified it as well as can possibly for DIY work.Hopefully mine finishes out that well. 💪🇺🇸💥
great video! just bought a 01 zx6r and want to paint the fairings too. very informative video!
Rest your fairing on an old pillow. It provides good support and helps stop vibrations.

Harbor Freight has a small 3” pneumatic polisher that would work perfectly for small jobs like that for less than $30.
Looks awesome!

what should i use in matte black color?

Well after untaping the areas I touched up, the paint is a bit darker than the original. So my question is this. If I sand it down and polish it will it match the rest of the bike?
How did you handle orange peel created by the paint? Did you wet sand it prior to clear coat- or did you wait until clear coat was applied?
You wait until the clear coat is completely dried then start wet sand which he did in this video .
If a color is pearl white how to make shine ? Clear coat or rubbing and polishing ?
Same exactly process .

Should be similar
So can you do all this work in 1 or 2 days?
Have a Harley fairing that's damaged. Would I use same process, without removing fairing?
do you have some video about assembling that fairings?? please help me!! regards

After you do the 1500 grit..do you reapply the clear coat, wait, then use the 2000 grit?
no, he did not reapply clear, wet sanded with 1500 and then 2000, then compound and polish.
Mark Hutchinson i figure he would sand and compound and then Clear coat

That clear coat can be sanded in just a few hours. The longer you wait, the hard it is to sand and buff.

So just a few coats of paint and clear alone wont work you have to scuff it and buff it back out.

Any liquid soap. Just a drop or two
