Thanks so much for this video. I tried several topcoats that said they were flat or matte only to be disappointed when I’d see sheen over the whole piece. Decided to try out your recommendation on the Modern Masters Dead Flat varnish and was blown away. Absolutely NO sheen. An actual DEAD FLAT finish for my chalky pieces. Yaaay! 💃🏽
A P YIPPPEEEE! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and Modern Masters Dead Flat Varnish worked for you. I love the stuff! Like you said, it’s truly a FLAT FLAT finish.
Thank you. I’ve been looking for something to replace dullcote. This was helpful.
So glad you found this video helpful. :)
I just did a sample comparison to matte and the polyacrylic ultra flat is truly ultra flat. I love the results. I love your channel.
Oh very cool! This is very helpful information. I’m going to seek out the ultra flat. I had no idea they made that sheen. Thank for liking my channel!
pro trick: watch movies on kaldroStream. Been using them for watching lots of of movies recently.
@Alec Tony yea, have been using kaldroStream for years myself =)
Super helpful, Madeline! Thanks so much. And let doggy seek mouse! 🐁
You're so welcome! Oh no I can't let Biscuit seek out the mouse. I have many snap traps along the wall and I don't want one of his little legs getting caught in one. Thankfully we have moved since this video. No more gross mice to deal with.

great video ! thank you !
Glad you liked it!
But polycrylic says "matte" and the other says "flat" - in the paint world matte finishes have a tinge of sheen compared to flat paint, so perhaps it's the same with water-based sealers.
I have used the Modern Masters Dead Flat for years...I love it...I use it on my paper mache pieces after they are painted with acrylic paints..when I photograph my artwork I never get a glare in the photo. I have never liked high gloss finshes.
Thank you so much for this video I have been struggling to find a truly matte sealer. I know what I will be using from now on! Would you recommend the dead flat to be used over water based stains as well? I have a coffee table I need to seal.
Modern Masters is truly flat. No sheen. I personally haven't used it over water based stains so I can't offer my experience there. I'm sure it would be fine since both are water based. Just make sure your stain has completely dried. Best of luck!
Can you put the dead flat finish under the polyurethane to protect the wood from darkening or turning more amber?
I just put polyacric to my dining table, I read that I should use polyurethane instead, you are my hope because you said in one of your videos that it's ok for kitchen tables. Love your videos!
Polycrylic is fine for kitchen table tops especially painted kitchen table tops. Polycrylic is water based so many people use it as a topcoat over painted pieces. If I stain a table top that's when I use an oil based poly.
Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC so if I’m understanding correctly that if a table top is stained use an “oil based” poly? Please advise. Thank you!
Michelle E Yes correct. I seal all my natural wood and stained wood with an oil based poly.
Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC thank you! 😙
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 years ago I used polycrylic on a kitchen table I refinished and also on a painted vanity... It stood up really well, but I remember the table would get white rings on it that would eventually evaporate when I would put even a cold glass of water on it or hot cup of tea. I'm not sure why that happens with this product. Any ideas?
Madeline - could you use the polycrylic over a white spray paint as well without it turning yellow??
Hi there! Love your videos :)
How long do you recommend letting paint dry before using the matte poly? I painted a dresser and 2 bookcases a very vintage shade of white, and they look great!!! But I don’t want to ruin them by using poly TOO soon.
I'm so glad you are enjoying my videos! I usually wait a solid 24 hours before applying the matte poly. This is assuming the paint was applied in ideal weather conditions (not too humid) and the paint has dried thoroughly.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 thanks for your response! I finished painting last night around 7pm (I did a second coat of white to the tops of the furniture, but not the rest)…so I’m thinking I’ll just give it till tomorrow for poly. It was about 70 degrees and not humid yesterday…colder overnight but theyre indoors where it’s pretty controlled…
Hello Madeline. Have you used the polyacrylic ultra flat?
I wasn't aware there was a Minwax Polycrylic in an ultra flat??? Have you tried it out?
can the dead flat b used as yhe only product on raw wood? but apply several coats? we have poplar as baseboard & casing, and it is so beautiful in it’s natural state, we don’t want to change it in any way, but of course must protect it regardless.
Are specifically looking for a flat finish or a satin finish to your topcoat? I ask because the Dead Flat has no sheen to it. Yes you can use it on raw wood.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 thank you so very much for replying! yes, looking for absolutely no sheen at all; we want to preserve the "raw wood" look in every way: no change in color, no sheen, etc. Last (2) questions, please, 1) someone has since stated that we should clean the wood with dentured alcohol... is this really necessary? it is raw wood installed the last few months. aside from carpenter handling to cut and install, majority of it has not been touched. there are only (2) closets and a small hallway that the wood was taped off bc painting had not occured on those walls yet; so not sure if there is tape residue that would need the DA used on it for this reason as well? 2) another person stated we should use a "sanding sealer" 1st, and then sand, and then apply whatever finish we're going to use; is that really necessary? whatever we do, we need the wood to last a good 20 yrs min, rest of our lives - bc we'd in our 50s and i don't want to keep doing physical labor like this as we age... giggling, eye roll.
MM insists you cannot use it on raw wood. They say it will yellow. One year in on raw walnut and have not seen any yellow at all.
@@Billy-qh3vp i appreciate your reply, Billy. I had to make a decision 11 months ago though, much wood to seal in our home; I went with General Finishes Top Performance Flat because I couldn't risk it and having to redo all of it again. It has worked out well so far. :}
Can you use varnish over a mural on a wall?
Yes and no. Clear as mud right? First it depends on the color of your mural. Is your mural lighter in colors, darker or multi colored. Then is the mural on a concrete wall, a wooden wall, what's underneath the paint? What really matters the most is the mural outside exposed to the elements or inside? And lastly was the mural painted with water based products or oil based? All these questions are vital when asking can a varnish go over a mural.
Can the MM dead matte varnish be used as the only finish/sealer on raw wood kitchen cabinets? Is is washable?
Yes you can. You need to apply multiple coats. It's water based. It's not waterproof, really no topcoat is unless it's a marine varnish. You can clean water based topcoats but use just a damp cloth with dish soap. Don't use harsh chemicals.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 thank you !
3 coats in raw wood and it is super washable and feels like it is “sealed”. It does scratch tho
Is it better to use the varnish or the polycrylic on a raw wood table top that is going to be used as a counter in a store? I used oak flooring and I used a white washed stain on it to fill in the cracks white. Would the matte varnish or matte polycrylic be better to use to make sure it does scuff up or get ruin easily?
Hi Marisa, I made a raw walnut coffee table and using only 3 coats of Modern Masters. It looks amazing. Doesn’t stain but it does scratch. I have come back to see if I can do the same for another piece but then add a harder coat to the top of the modern masters.
Another idea I had was, 2 coats of MM to preserve the wood color, then the “hard” coat and then one more of MM to get the Matt finish again.
Keep in mind I’m just a guy, not an expert. Hope it helps
@@Billy-qh3vp Hello, was reading your review...we bought a teak dining table and want to use the MM on it to preserve the rustic look of the table as we had read that someone else did that on the review of the table. The can specifically says "do not use on raw wood", so was wondering how it worked out for you after a few months? And did you try doing the 2 coats of MM and then the hard coat and then the MM again?
Marisa, curious what you decided on and if it worked for you.
Is it advised to wear PPE to apply polycrylic?
No it’s water based
I tried the Modern Masters dead flat and it has been over 24hours and it has a milky look to it still. Did I do something wrong?
What color paint did you paint with? How did you apply it? Sometimes with darker paint colors you need to add a little of the paint to help with the milky look.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 I put it over a stain I made with vinegar/steel wool
Please help- I applied my poly over my chalk paint on a coffee table. I did two coats before I went to bed. I got up to sand this morning and do my third coat...and my entire coffee table is like...cracked. All the paint looks cracked. What can I do? 😖 this was my first time using poly. I have four kids and I needed something very durable. I also finished a table now I’m scared to put the poly on it
The Thrifty Nook Natalie Jill Hi there! Was this an oil based poly or a water based poly you applied?
Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC it was water based, with the matte finish
Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC and thanks for the fast reply lol I can’t believe you responded
The Thrifty Nook Natalie Jill Hmmmm can you talk me through how you prepped the piece? Did you sand the top before painting? Did you clean it before painting? What did you use to clean it? What kind of paint did you apply? How many coats of paint? It sounds like something under the surface of the paint reacted with the water based poly and cased the cracking. I’m so sorry this happened. It’s like diagnosing a mysterious illness sometimes to understand what happened.
Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC haha well it was my first real piece I did. And I cleaned my coffee table with dawn dish soap and water. I didn’t sand it before I applied my chalk paint. I used the kilz chalk paint and put on two layers and let it dry. I really didn’t like it being so white so I went back with Valspar chalk paint and added some color to it. I let it dry for two days and googles finishes for it. I decided on the poly because I needed something that would stand against four kids. I put on the first coat of poly and it dried really fast. Although after watchin your videos I realized I did it super sloppy 😭😂. I just slapped it on there. So by my second coat I was more prepared and it wasent rough so I didn’t sand. I put on the second coat. I went slower. So now I’m debating just repainting it. Can I repaint over the poly? I think wax is so intimidating and I’m not sure how it would hold up. Thank you so much for replying.
Comparing apples to oranges.....Flat is always a lower sheen than matte. They are two different sheens. Minwax also make an ultra flat.
