to be fair, the game is NOT released yet. Its in early access so i wont judge until it has an official release without FOV sliders AND 1st Person Only Servers
Just because the developers of a game make a decision that doesn't automatically mean that is the optimal decision. Game devs aren't omnipotent gods...
Xovius If it were unintended and people used it, that would be exploiting and consequently cheating. 3rd Person perspective is a feature in the game so the devs intended for it to be utilized and it shouldn't be considered cheating.
@Para Yes, everybody else get to use it, but the situation when you are in cover and have visual when being 100% sure that enemy cannot have one on you will feel super weird to people that play games where visual = death within 10 sec.
Great video as always Magnum. I think it's fair to say most players learn in their first few games that third person mode is always ideal to use, but you've definitely peaked my interest in the idea of first person only modes/servers. It could do wonders for alleviating the frustration of an unlucky endgame circle.
First person only is definitely my preferred way of playing but just because something is more balanced doesn't necessarily mean its more fun/the better choice. Although I do think the end game would be far more compelling in first person only. Not trying to argue with you, I just don't want people thinking I am bashing third person!
H4licarnassus the dev stream said that is probably gonn happen after the game actually published which is about end of 2017, and i think there is also no cross hair
The no crosshair bit is a holdover from 'hardcore' (lol) Arma 3. In Arma 3, it's mostly just a system whereby people who have never cleared rooms or shot at other humans tell other people, including those who have, that the crosshair isn't realistic and therefor doesn't belong on 'hardcore'. The fact of the matter is that most shooters with the experience can aim and hit a target from 25-75 yards by using a system that basically amounts to pointing, if necessary. I've always felt the crosshair simulates pointing with my offhand.
Thrash if you can shoot without crosshair at those short distances than you shouldn't have it in the game. Also, I would really like to see how you land a headshot from the hip at 30 yards distance. Fucking casuals.
We're talking about real life, and it isn't shooting from the hip, but rather shooting from the ready or high ready and using your offhand to aim and manipulate the barrel of the weapon without taking aim through the optics. This has a couple of benefits: if you're using an optic with a high mount and a 50m/300m zero, your ability to accurately engage targets sub-50m requires a holdover. This holdover is fine if I have time to aim, but if I'm surprised or need to quickly get rounds on target where I want them, my offhand might be a more accurate option until I transition to my optic. The point being, that I feel the crosshair has always simulated this aspect of close quarters firearms when playing games like Arma. I think 3P in any game (Arma or PUBG) is cancerous, it's a shame either of them have the option for it at all.
I've played this game and plenty of other shooters. third person are more strategy based. get to the advantageous spot first. learn your environment and make the most of the map. first person shooter are run and gun reflex fest.
if anyone played arma 3 with Playerunknowns Battle Royale mod they had regular (3rd person) and hardcore (1st person only) servers. Hardcore matches were a lot more rewarding, a lot less being killed "out of nowhere" and a lot more people would be alive for a lot longer throughout the game (harder to spot and vice versa). I'm really hoping the bring bullet penetration to objects/walls and a hardcore mode to pubg
This is the first video of yours I've come across and can I just say- your inclusion of a linked table of contents for your video is phenomenal, and shows more care and professionalism than most video uploaders out there. And for that, you have massive respect. keep up the great work!
so i really do understand the concept of this scenario but i just wanted to watch it just to see if i miss anything. you explain it so well and perfect. i think everyone would be able to understand the concept. even the visual examples you showed made it so much more clear. good video!!
this video put most of my thoughts on the subject into perfect illistration. the window peeking, the corners, over walls. everything. good video my guy!
Love the content man! Seriously, great stuff. I would love to see an AR episode based around the balance changes done in the last monthly patch. They don't put in what exactly was changed so I would like to see how the ARs currently rank. I love the OCD series you have going. I'm kind of a min-maxer myself so i love this kind of stuff. I would love to see a series along side this going over each monthly patch and what the patch actually accomplished. It would only be once a month so, hopefully, wouldn't be too exhausting. Again, keep up the great work. You put a lot of effort in your videos and it shows. Your channel is rapidly growing because of it :)
Great info for new players and old. Giving pretty close actual lines of sight and how it pertains to both sides of the players is nicely done and nicely edited. Keep up the good work
Can't wait for 1pp. It's the best way (imo) to play a competitive shooter. Casual 3rd person shooters are fine and have their place but when it gets competitive especially when the games are long like in PUBG it really sucks to die to some random guy hiding behind a rock. Most skilled players do best in 1pp as they are more likely to win fair engagements. I'd rather be outshot 100 times and lose then win by cheesing someone as I hide behind a rock.
I can't say I disagree! Its definitely how I prefer to play as well, hopefully we'll have the choice so we can choose how we want to play soon, though the developers have said its a low priority :(
'Casual 3rd person shooters' - really? If you're trying to make a point and get people to see eye-to-eye with you even if they are fans of the tps genre, it might be an idea not to use polarizing words that are going to imply they are some sort of filthy scrub 'casual'. Yknow?
And this is why I love FP camera. I like the third one too, but the game changes a lot when you see what you have to see throgh your eyes. As I said before, congrats for your channel :)
I love your content and the OCD series. Definitely has answered some questions I had. I subscribes after watching the first video. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the nest one.
That will be interesting. And not easy to make. You only get content once a round LOL We need access to custom servers to test all this stuff.Either way, you do great. I am too busy trying to get great gameplay
First Person is really important in any game. It lets you connect with what you see on screen and relate to it in the most personal way. You may not think about it all the time but first person is how everyone and everything experiences life, real life. The identity of "ME" "I" translates to games perfectly. The excitement of seeing "your" hands on the screen holding a weapon and feeling that it's your weapon and your narrative. " I AM Master Chief" This is why weapon skins, tints and camos are so popular. Virtual reality in a first person game is how immersion is supposed to be. Open world games seem larger in scale in first person. I always thought third person was really unnatural because you can look at everything at the same time, never taking in the moment of being there where your character stands. Field of View is very import. The aspect ratio of your standard 16:9 on TVs and monitors are holding back the realistic peripheral view that lets first person in a game be more like it is in real life. First person can often feel limited to what information you see on screen because of a tunnel vision FOV. This could all change if VR headsets progress and screens got thin and flexible to provide a 180 degree panoramic view. Third person in a game like metal gear solid is good only because you can shoulder switch the camera to look over the left and right which is ergonomic and works around any corner not just over the right shoulder like it does in Battlegrounds. Shoulder switching in a game like The Last of Us is what made the gameplay so fluid and sophisticated and not limited like in other third person games. Overall I think both perspectives make any game specifically open world games stronger in both gameplay options and replayability. One size does not fit all, although only having one perspective does let the developers focus and make the one camera they chose very strong in gameplay. It's very rare that a game that does both perspectives is crisp and perfect for both. Battlegrounds is no exception. They include both so naturally they are going to be just as good or just as crappy as the other. Third person is good for looking at your character in their surroundings and what they're wearing. First person is about you overcoming the environment head on instead of blending into it like its a painting or photo. First person is all about the heat of the moment and thats why its famous for its fast pace of gameplay.
Great video. been trying to explain this to people who feel it's an even playing field since both have 3rd person enabled. when it is indeed a huge disadvantage in many situations as you described. With first person only servers coming soon it will change how the game is played vastly. and it will even the playing field more. 1st person..You still need to pay attention..but now you won't have to worry about someone watching you while they are behind cover!!
jcaashby3 the issue I have with that is that I feel the 3rd person allows you to see what you would if you were realistically peaking with minimal body protrusion, first person is almost guaranteed to have your shoulder and arm out before you can even see around the corner
@MrKilla that is one way to look at for sure for certain situations. But there are others that the 3rd pv the camera can be a major advantage such as laying prone on roofs or a field etc. All in all....3rd and 1st have there pros and cons.
Normally I don't like 3rd person, pretty much for every reason listed in the video. 1st person does present more fair & balanced engagements, and the person with better positioning will still often win (in the 1st example, the person behind the wall is safer compared to the person, I don't know, in an open field). BUT, here's the thing: PUBG ain't a balanced, competitive game. You could argue that it's competitive (everyone wants to win) and that there's an element of skill (aim, positioning, tactics), but you can't deny that gear/vehicle spawns, plane path, and circle locations ultimately makes it a more RNG & casual, fun game. I think that third person compliments this kind of game, makes it welcoming for the masses that have bought it instead of reducing the playerbase to the skilled few. Were it a different game, or if a mode were implemented to make it more like an arena shooter with identical weapon starts & locations, then maybe FPV only would make more sense to create balanced comp matches. Otherwise? This one game is the weird exception to me, where I'm okay with way more casual/easygoing features. The more people play it and have a good time, the better. And it's okay being that kind of game, there are tons of other competitive games out there.
Great video. I would definitly stick to a 1st person only mode. People worry about dividing the community, but I believe in giving the community what it wants. 1st person only is the type of gameplay I want.
Yeah, I see it all the time. "3rd person isn't less tactical than first, it's just different tactics!"........... No, no. It IS less tactical. You literally learn everything without exposing yourself, and every single action in third person has less risk than the same one in first person (AKA, less skill)
Thats why it is great that pubg has first person servers now...makes it a much better game. Best patch they have made so far! Have not touched the third person servers since :)
Not that I like 3rd person, but since it's in the game an everyone uses it in a practical matter, I too, have to use it to survive. An I've noticed there are a lot of advantages to 3rd person I didn't see noted in the video. For instance, pressing your leanbois keys Q/E, and then holding down the aiming key you use allows you to switch what shoulder the camera is looking over. Giving you advantages to seeing around corners to your left and your default right. Looting means you can essentially watch your own back while in first person I'd assume you'd need someone to cover you while you look down at the ground to gather supplies/weapons. There are more, but at the time this is all that comes to mind. +1 need 1st person servers
This made want to play arma 3 again.. btw really like your video, very well thought and done. I realized I treat 3rd person games like they were 1st, because it's just more fun and logical to me. It takes more skill and to me skill=fun.
I like how despite the fact he tried to be as unbiased as possible, it's still blatantly obvious playing in First Person Perspective is almost strictly better.
People complain about third person, This is including myself sometimes, Yet, Realistically when 1st person comes out only a small majority of people will actually play it. First person in most games is extremely boring and confined. Third person is very RNG but it works both ways. Sometimes youll have the advantage, sometimes you won't. Just try keep yourself as covered as you can. Make sure you're always hugging trees, walls, rocks and it's really not that hard. It also helps that the majority of people in this game can't shoot for shit. The game is based on RNG regardless, From random circles to loot spawns early game.
I can't wait for 1st person only mode. Once it is released I don't see myself ever playing 3rd person mode again. They just need to add an FOV slider, because at the moment it feels like I'm playing on a console when I play in 1st person.
as soon as the gameplay came i wondered why its 3rd person...1st person makes it more tense thriling and rewarding. it makes outplayes possible. if i ever play this jt will be on 1stp servers
The closer you are to the blocking object the more you have an advantage in 3rd person. If someone is closer to the object you are both peaking around they will see you first.
Awesome vid mate! I had a question for you to test What happens if you are full loaded and someone destroys your vest? Will you lose your items or just have more stuff than you are allowed to have? Have fun with this :D
You'll keep your stuff & the vest, its just that the vest doesnt have any armor left so you will be getting full dmg from shots further on... Hope that answers it.
Remember this game is dev'd by the creators of H1Z1 which is based on the ARMA platform and its mechanics, one of the most tactical 1st person & 3rd Person games out there. So why should you mind it . All playing fields are equal!
Great video. All of the things you mentioned about third person is exactly why I refunded the game. When it finally has a first person only mode I might consider buying it again,
LukeR30 only a mindless fanboy would write such an ignorant and nonsensical reply. The game might do even better if it incorporated a proper first person only mode. People like me, who enjoy realistic and fair gameplay, would finally be able to enjoy the game.
EnigmaNL go play Arma then... listen player unknown battlegrounds is not meant to be super realistic alright ? it is mix between h.1.z.1 and Arma. so you can Uninstall this game and never play it nobody gives a shit . goodbye
summed up: 1st person: try and stay farther away from a corner than your enemy, you will see them first 3rd person: stay closer to the corner than your enemy, you will see them first
Great video, I think you are greatly underestimating frag grenades however. Frags have a set detonation timer, and when timed properly will absolutely hit people in cover every time, so long as they're in range.
I tried to address this in the video. I tried over and over to use grenades to down an enemy in cover and failed time and time again. I agree throwables have an immense potential to end these stalemates but currently they just seem unreliable.
Good vid but what about the circle .. in 3rd person you can ALT-mouse to look around. This is complete gone with 1st person right? so moving towards the circle has a way higher risk. Think people will stay round the blue line and im wondering how this will play.. im not sure.. but hyped for every update in this game! love it.
In First Person the corners favor the more distaned player for example put your hands as an objekt ontop of your eyes, you kind of forgott to tell and show that nice vid. btw
I am really eager for first person servers, but at the same time they are going to be terrifying and punishing. The game already has situations where someone comes out of no where and kills you. Now while it is true that seeing people from behind cover is far less likely, it will be terrifying to be shot at and not know where someone is. Also prone will be far less beneficial.
Max Thornton actually prone will still be very beneficial. in third person mode the camera is much higher placed and allows you to see proned players very easily. In first person, although you can't hide and get info simultaneously, you can hide much more effectively in grass than before UNLESS the person has a large height advantage on you
Max Thornton I just had a game where I was prone on a hill at the edge looking into a valley. I switched to 1person and I was able to have a solid view of the field for sure. I look forward to first person only servers
those situations where a person comes out of nowhere and kills you are a direct result of your beloved 3rd person view. That person gained information and knew where you were, you had no chance to see him. In 1st person only they don't have that luxury to just stalk you until you get close enough that they can kill you.
Imagine if your sleeping and someone punches you in the face while your sleep even tho you can LITERALLY wait until they are sleep and do the same thing to them it's still not fair right ? Thats exactly how the third person perspective is you can see someone's every move and without even exposing yourself it's not fair EVEN THO you can do the same thing too
I kind of like third person, it makes me think about what the enemy can see and what I can see, makes it more tactical imo. I'd be fine with first person only though, both have their advantages
It's a good game when it isn't frustrating; the frustration being the borked nature of the 3rd person view - it tries to blend both 1st and 3rd person and it doesn't work because 3rd person breaks the rules of engagement - it isn't called it, but it may aswell be a camera/wall hack.
Perhaps this can be fixed by positioning the third person camera lower. And much closer and personal when in certain positions like crouched or prone. The side wall peeking now that one... using a reversed obstruction system (like how the camera would zoom in if something is blocking the line of sight between the player and the camera) to pull the camera close to the player when something is directly "in front" of him/her. So he/she would have to move back and put themselves in danger to get a peek around the corner.
I love the idea of 1st Person Only servers, but the FOV absolutely needs to change. In its current state it is way too narrow.
ShadowRam242 I have no idea how they think it's even remotely acceptable to release without an FoV slider.
Narrow fov makes it easier to see distant targets, i.e. everyone in this game
There's a mod for it
I dont agree with mods having to fix issues the game has. Especially if you dont actually know if you can be banned for it.
to be fair, the game is NOT released yet. Its in early access so i wont judge until it has an official release without FOV sliders AND 1st Person Only Servers
I still feel like I'm cheating when I use 3rd person...
Parabellum Just because everyone does it does not make it the right thing to do.
Telekinetic Sloth if it's an intended option in the game then how is it wrong?
Just because the developers of a game make a decision that doesn't automatically mean that is the optimal decision. Game devs aren't omnipotent gods...
Xovius If it were unintended and people used it, that would be exploiting and consequently cheating. 3rd Person perspective is a feature in the game so the devs intended for it to be utilized and it shouldn't be considered cheating.

When first person mode comes, skills will talk.
Skills already talk. Positioning and strategy are paramount.
Sitting behind a wall and looking around with 3rd person cam is skill? Okey...
Tremeslay skill is already implemented, it's called strategy vs reflex skill, brain vs body. cunning vs reaction.
@bsshooter Trust me, you will understand me when this mode comes in the game.

have you considered exploring how damage modeling works for grenades? Like, are frags actually projectile-based or is it all proximity?
They follow the wet noodle damage model. :P I am kidding of course, its definitely something I am interested in doing!

its a lot more then 5%, First person is fair tho no information gathering without risk.
5% LOL, it's so easy to see people leaning. Harder to hit sure, but you are acting like they are invisible.
'Casual 3rd person shooters' - really?

AMAZING video. Really hated the idea of first person only, but now I want to play first person only for the immersion and suppression aspects.

this is super helpful!!!..keep up the good work sir
Common Sense The Video
I don't think many people have played ARMA. Its the same system
Tad Dekker or unturned
really tho dude, beat that obvious fucking point to death !
it's not too common. People still argue that the advantage of hiding and not being seen...can somehow be countered by the player who is exposed.
Yeah, I see it all the time. "3rd person isn't less tactical than first, it's just different tactics!"........... No, no. It IS less tactical. You literally learn everything without exposing yourself, and every single action in third person has less risk than the same one in first person (AKA, less skill)
yesssss thank you so much for this video
Subbed, content format is fucking perfect
Thank you so much :)
Thanx for saying personal preference at the end
this was a really good video nice job
I wish this was available on XBOX One. Never cared for Third Person shenanigans in online shooters.
Christian Bates it does touch RB
One of the best pubg videos i have seen yet!
Thanks for the true and accurate data, in my opinion games like this cannot be approached competitively unless its exclusively first person
Thats why it is great that pubg has first person servers now...makes it a much better game. Best patch they have made so far! Have not touched the third person servers since :)
This was helpful, thanks.
Fuck 3rd person in a tactical / survival / pvp games. Also 1st person is so much more immersive.
Not really. 1st Person is like trying to move around while staring through a toilet paper tube.
JM B also 4 fps is more immersive and shooting yourself when you get hit in game
JM B "muh immersion"
Trevor Parsons In this game it is haha, the fov is way too low.
JM B Say what you want, bet you don't even have that many wins in PUBG with that mindset. Leave that first person crap in Arma 3 lmao
Correct! There are a few aspects of third person I left out of the video, due to the fact that it was already getting a bit long in the tooth.
well done guys. very helpful
This made want to play arma 3 again..
btw really like your video, very well thought and done. I realized I treat 3rd person games like they were 1st, because it's just more fun and logical to me. It takes more skill and to me skill=fun.
I just left you a like for all the work and footage you've done on that one lol..
Interesting informations tho! ;)
1:50 "...you have no way of knowing..." Dude, it's right there, in your own video, shadows!
Great explanation
Love your videos!
+1 for leaning tip in barred windows
i don't think that there is someone out there that needed this to be explain, it's kinda logical but still great video.
I can't wait for 1st person only mode. Once it is released I don't see myself ever playing 3rd person mode again.
They just need to add an FOV slider, because at the moment it feels like I'm playing on a console when I play in 1st person.
Definitely earned a sub. I hate being killed by an idiot camping in a house using 3rd person.
as soon as the gameplay came i wondered why its 3rd person...1st person makes it more tense thriling and rewarding. it makes outplayes possible. if i ever play this jt will be on 1stp servers
You've earned a sub.
The closer you are to the blocking object the more you have an advantage in 3rd person. If someone is closer to the object you are both peaking around they will see you first.
Awesome vid mate!
I had a question for you to test
What happens if you are full loaded and someone destroys your vest? Will you lose your items or just have more stuff than you are allowed to have? Have fun with this :D
You'll keep your stuff & the vest, its just that the vest doesnt have any armor left so you will be getting full dmg from shots further on... Hope that answers it.
Remember this game is dev'd by the creators of H1Z1 which is based on the ARMA platform and its mechanics, one of the most tactical 1st person & 3rd Person games out there. So why should you mind it . All playing fields are equal!
Great video. All of the things you mentioned about third person is exactly why I refunded the game. When it finally has a first person only mode I might consider buying it again,
EnigmaNL the game is doing good without you so you might keep it refunded
LukeR30 only a mindless fanboy would write such an ignorant and nonsensical reply.
The game might do even better if it incorporated a proper first person only mode. People like me, who enjoy realistic and fair gameplay, would finally be able to enjoy the game.
EnigmaNL go play Arma then... listen player unknown battlegrounds is not meant to be super realistic alright ? it is mix between h.1.z.1 and Arma. so you can Uninstall this game and never play it nobody gives a shit . goodbye
You gave enough of a shit to reply m8.
Good video!
summed up:
1st person: try and stay farther away from a corner than your enemy, you will see them first
3rd person: stay closer to the corner than your enemy, you will see them first
Great video, I think you are greatly underestimating frag grenades however. Frags have a set detonation timer, and when timed properly will absolutely hit people in cover every time, so long as they're in range.
I tried to address this in the video. I tried over and over to use grenades to down an enemy in cover and failed time and time again. I agree throwables have an immense potential to end these stalemates but currently they just seem unreliable.
very well done video, keep up the work. iam doing beginner guides in german, i will use this video as a reference. cheers ♥
Basically, learn to toggle between them because they're situational.
You make some good shit, subbed.
they should do what Arma3 does with the crosshair in first person if you're aiming at a wall but your muzzle isnt
Good vid but what about the circle .. in 3rd person you can ALT-mouse to look around. This is complete gone with 1st person right? so moving towards the circle has a way higher risk. Think people will stay round the blue line and im wondering how this will play.. im not sure.. but hyped for every update in this game! love it.
Actually, there is information from that corner ambusher: Her shadow.
Correct! I noticed it after I uploaded it! Doh! However if you are on a corner that doesn't get the benefit of shadow information you are SOL.
Even with the shadow, the corner camper still gets the peakers advantage.
Yeah, it's situational. But still a good argument to play with shadows on.
I'm pretty sure player shadows are defaulted on now.
Ah. Did not know that.
Never played OCD, but I really liked this video.
EDIT: I have been informed the game is called PUBG. Please forgive me of my sins
the game is called PUBG
lmao
Short version: always use 3rd person until you actually start left clicking.
Veeery goood vid
In First Person the corners favor the more distaned player for example put your hands as an objekt ontop of your eyes, you kind of forgott to tell and show that
nice vid. btw
Can you do a video on circle damage, and when you should use what meds if you're outside of the zone?
Its planned! Not sure when, maybe before or after the parachute video.
AWESOMMMMMMMMMMMMMME
They could add a fog of war just like in project zomboid, only showing what your character is suposed to see. It's also called Meta system.
ur right, personal preference
3:15 the barrel is facing the barrier.
Whe aiming around a corner you can use q and e to change if your using your right or left side
I really hope they add weapon shifting, tired of trying to shoot to the left of my wall but having to expose myself entirely to fire off a few rounds.
great videos.
Thats exactly how the third person perspective is you can see someone's every move and without even exposing yourself it's not fair EVEN THO you can do the same thing too
Very nice video.
you'd think people wouldn't need to be explained such basic stuff. I was 3k times wrong. as attonment, I liked the video.
I kind of like third person, it makes me think about what the enemy can see and what I can see, makes it more tactical imo. I'd be fine with first person only though, both have their advantages
It's a good game when it isn't frustrating; the frustration being the borked nature of the 3rd person view - it tries to blend both 1st and 3rd person and it doesn't work because 3rd person breaks the rules of engagement - it isn't called it, but it may aswell be a camera/wall hack.
thanx very informative ;)
Awesome video as always.
If you right click and hit Q, you switch handedness. :)
or at least your shoulder.
@ 4:44 hyperbolic examples are THE BEST FRICKIN EXAMPLES IN THE HISTORY OF BOTH HYPERS, and BOLLOCKS!
oh and first person play rules!
Throwables are actually really good. I've seen many Frag kills assuming the Frags don't glitch and remain stuck in my hand in a permanent throw state.
In this game, the low ground has more advantage than the high ground. You WANT to have an uphill battle.
ereunbi how
In TPP gamemodes they should have a green dot over the enemys head specifying where their camera is.
