    It’s not just that her wins aren’t so great. It’s that she didn’t even get nominated for her two best performances(Casablanca and Notorious) two of the greatest performances ever IMO.

      Autumn Sonata is easily her best and most acclaimed. It's just not as popular as Casablanca or Notorious. (I do agree that she should have easily been nominated for those and are better than most of her nominations)

      Please watch the Autumn Sonata by Ingmar Bergman. I think that her best performance and the most complex character she played.

      I don't know. Her performance in Gaslight had much more depth than in Casablanca (not hard anyway given the subject matter). And, anyway, the Academy apparently decided to focus on For Whom the Bell Tolls for her that year of Casablanca... More or less for Casablanca the camera decided to be her patron rather than the script ... lol

    • @antoniodjordjevic9493
      @antoniodjordjevic9493 3 месяца назад

      @@sann5146 i would agree here, I think even though she is great and definatey nomination worthy in both Notorious and Casablanca, people are more focused on the fact that the two films are great and kind of masterpieces, very popular but as far as her individual performance (NOT CHARACTER BUT PERFORMANCE SHE GIVES) is not an all time great acting. And Gaslight is definatey superior work, but also cause the role offered much more.

      The reason why Ingrid wasn’t nominated for “Casablanca” was the Academy rules that stated that an actor can only compete one movie per acting category, and the studios chose to campaign her other film “To Whom The Bell Tolls” that year, and she got the nomination for that film.

    I give Ingrid crdit for one of the most gracious acceptance speeches in Oscar history. When she won for Murder on the Orient Express, she apologized to Valentina Cortese, who she felt was more deserving. She was truly a class act.

    There’s another reason why I love Ingrid Bergman. This is a true story. The war in Finland ended in 1944 and Helsinki was in a mess with very little left in commodities. My Mom, 23 years-old at the time, was requiring clothes. She loved the movies and, of course, knew that Ingrid was somewhere in Hollywood. She sat down and, in Swedish, wrote to her asking if she could spare some of her wardrobe. A stamp was placed on the envelope with the caption “Ingrid Bergman, U.S.A.” Several weeks later, a trunk was delivered to her full of dresses. What a considerate and a class act she was! Thanks to the U.S. postal service also.

    Again, I have to agree with you. She should have one for Casablanca, Notorious and Autumn Sonata. Gaslight is a very worthy win. Gaslight is make up win for loosing the previous year or not nominated for Casablanca but it also happens to be a worthy win as well. I think with Murder on the Orient Express, out of the entire cast she is the one that stands out. She took a very small role and made people remember her over everyone else. It is a good win for the nominees that year. Anastasia is the "I'm sorry we didn't have your back" win.

    As an Ingrid's stan, much as I tink she was good in Gaslight. Stanwych shld've won for her most iconic femme fatale role tt yr!! Bergman shld've won 2 yrs later for a similarly tortured but far superior performance in Hitchcock's Notorious!!

  • @rebeccag8589
    @rebeccag8589 4 месяца назад +8

    I agree that she should have won for Gaslight, and she absolutely should have won for Casablanca and Autumn Sonata instead of Anastasia and Murder on the Orient Express. Those two were wins to make up for other times she should have won and to apologize for the blacklist and welcome her back to Hollywood, and Murder on the Orient Express was also a career win. I think she deserved nominations for Cactus Flower and Notorious but not necessarily a win (although wins would have been good too).
    Instead of the Anastasia win, Deborah Kerr should have won for The King and I. Kerr is one of my favorite actresses and should be an Oscar winner, and this is a great performance. It has a lot of depth (not my favorite Kerr performance but this was the closest she came, I agree).
    I think Kahn or Valentina should have won instead of Bergman for Murder on the Orient Express.

    I love Ingrid Bergman, but I would've only given her Best Actress for Autumn Sonata. As much as I love her performance in Gaslight, I would've given the win to Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity. Her win for Anastasica feels like a comeback win, and her win Murder on the Orient Express makes no sense to me

    Ingrid Bergman was someone who you’ll never forget. Some of her Oscar wins are questionable but for her to win three in under 10 nominations is rare like Frances McDormand and Daniel Day Lewis

    • @62pianoguy
      @62pianoguy 4 месяца назад +1

      Well, winning exactly three Oscars is what's rare -- only six actors have ever done it. But four of them, i.e. 66.6% (Bergman, Day-Lewis, McDormand, and Walter Brennan) did so with fewer than 10 nominations. The other two are Jack Nicholson (12 nominations) and Meryl Streep (21).
      For that matter, receiving 10 or more acting nominations is likewise exceedingly rare -- only five examples exist, the other three being Bette Davis (10), Laurence Olivier (10), and Katharine Hepburn (12).

    I love that there's still nothing near a consensus about who should have won best actress in 1978--seems like a fairly even spread among Bergman, Clayburgh, and Page advocates (I'm team Bergman all the way).
    I'm surprised you didn't say more about Valentina Cortese. She's absolutely BRILLIANT in Day for Night. She was so good that Bergman herself spent her entire acceptance speech signing her praises and begging for forgiveness!

    I actually heard that the reason why Ingrid Bergman was nominated for "For Whom the Bell Tolls" instead of "Casablanca" was because she wanted to campaign for her performance in the former. Apparently, she didn’t believe too much for "Casablanca'c and yet, it ended up as the Best Picture Winner for 1943.
    Also, whatever you do, don't watch "For Whom the Bell Tolls." It's long and boring with a copy-and-paste screenplay that doesn't understand the nuences of the book. Also, did I mention the brown face? Even though the novel is not perfect, go read that instead.

    Her nomination for For Whom the Bells Tolls instead of Casablanca makes sense in the context of the Oscars. Of all the acting categories Best Actress is the one that correlates with Best Picture the least. Look at who won that year: Jennifer Jones for playing someone religious. Ingrid Bergman also played a religious character in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Casablanca is a war movie with something to say. That wasn't something women got nominated for often. No, if women got nominated for war movies, it was always for some propaganda bullshit not the important stuff and especially not in lead.

    as much as I love and respect Ingrid Bergman's work (Autumn Sonata is my favourite of her performances), I find it a bit unfair for her to have 3 Oscars when legends like Garbo, Stanwyck, Irene Dunne (add Glenn Close in there for good measure) never won an Oscar.

    I really think should have a 4th award for Autumn Sonata. It’s easily one of the most introspective roles she’s ever done. She disappears into it and gives us a performance which is so modern and so characteristic it gives me goosebumps. I think it knocks Katherine Hepburn’s wins in guess who’s coming to dinner and On Golden Pond out of the park.

    I don’t commonly disagree with Brian’s opinion, but this is a rare occasion where I do. I love both of her first two wins and don’t doubt the legitimacy of those wins compared to the competition

    For whom the bell tolls is not as good as Casablanca, but Ingrid ´s performance was way better than the other.

    I first saw MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS on a big screen during its original release, and while I too found it somewhat slow-paced, Ingrid Bergman gave a truly memorable and surprising performance. My family and I were riveted by her big scene with Albert Finney. Sometimes when we see films on our laptops or TVs, we lose sight of the fact a star of Bergman's magnitude can best be appreciated on a large movie screen. At the time, we weren't immersed in the trajectory of her career -- only the fact this great actress was stealing the movie from an all-star cast.

    Brian I love your videos. Two comments to make, first my jaw hit the floor when both you and Cody suggested that Orient Express was a bore and a slog. OMG! It’s so good! It’s funny, and suspenseful (if you don’t know the ending), beautiful to look at, gripping…I do believe it’s a bit talky but that shouldn’t equate to boring. Try the Kenneth Branagh remake… now THAT’S a slog! That said, everyone gets an opinion and it’s valid. Disappointed you didn’t like it more. Also, Bergman didn’t deserve the win. Lauren Bacall was far more interesting in Orient Express.
    Second, my jaw hit the floor when Cody suggested that supporting roles don’t need to have anything to do they are supporting roles. That’s a ridiculous thing to say. Most times the supporting roles are the juicier, funnier more exciting roles. I doubt viewers would agree nominees and winners like Jennifer Hudson, Allison Janney, Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, Monique, Catherine Zeta Jones…etc… would be considered as having “nothing to do” in their supporting role and that’s what we should expect from a supporting role. Cody shouldn’t bristle at the comment people make that they “had nothing to do”…. He should bristle at the idea that people get nominated for roles that GAVE them nothing to do. There.. I’m off my soapbox now. 😊

      My top four supporting actress wins are Catherine Zeta -Jones ,Octavia Spencer ,Olympia Dukakis and Marisa Tomei. I think it can go both ways a smaller role sometimes stands out but I agree there are also the funnier,juicer roles ( I like the way you say it!)that pop out you remember them .

    I actually like all of her Oscar wins. The biggest problem with her Orient Express win is that I think her co-star Lauren Bacall gives a better performance. It's wild that Bacall's first and only nomination came in the 90s.

    Cody should refrain from commenting on performances he hasn't seen. His declaration that Bette Davis' nomination for Mr. Skeffington "was her weakest" - while admitting he hadn't seen the movie - is ludicrous. Her AND Claude Rains nominations for this movie were well deserved.
    I didn't think Gaslight was Ingrid's finest hour - and the award should have gone to Barbara Stanwyck. As I think most would agree that Notorious should have been the Oscar win.
