  • Strong solar activity caused two powerful X-flares on May 9, 2024, which triggered a geomagnetic storm on Earth. This was the most severe solar storm since the Halloween event of 2003 and resulted in long-lasting auroras up to subtropical latitudes.

    Amazing Jorg! You managed to get both this and the Halloween 2003 storm! Out of curiosity how would you compare the two visually?

      I think, there is too much time between both. Thatswhy I feel not able to make a realistic comparison. I looked at the images of 2003 again and again over the years and in my memory these aurora became brighter and brighter. To be honest, during the 2024 aurora I was a little disappointed that the visual colors were not as intense as in the old analog photos. But I'm sure that's normal.
