The recent defeat has not dampened Starscream and the Combaticons' resolve, which spells bad news for everyone else. They tamper with the space bridge to bring Earth and the sun a lot closer together. All is indeed going well for Starscream until the Combaticons start thinking for themselves. With Cybertron soon also in danger, a battle royal involving Optimus, Megatron, and Bruticus await. Meanwhile, chaos on Earth leaves the Protectobots with their hands full.

Gotta love how the Constructicons have like 3 backstories in the whole series, and the Stunticons, Aerialbots and Combaticons have an established backstory, yet the Protectobots just show up out of nowhere.
I think it would be cool if they were to bring the protectabots back. Especially in the rescue bots cartoon. (or at the very least bring back defensor.)
They didn't have time to give them one
Protectobots Literally came out of a garage and we’re doing nothing until prime told them lol.
So did the Technobots, Terrorcons and the Predacons. They popped up out of nowhere. And I'm pretty sure we never really got a chance to really understand who they were. I would have loved a backstory on them
@@atomicreactor6033 The Terrorcons, sure, but the Predacons are implied to be recent Quintesson creations in the “Five Faces Of Doom” episode, and the Technobots were built by Grimlock when an electrical surge made him 10x smarter.

Shockwave was soft af to let that happen.😂
Literally the only use for Shockwave's gun mode. His creator was very prescient, it only took four million years for him to get the opportunity to transform.

How many 80's cartoon shows actually hold up when watched through the eyes of an adult? This one absolutely does. There's a reason this mythos has lasted for decades and traverses generations...it's because of this cartoon.
It's because it's in our blood at this point.

Well the in episode implication was that they would be too remote from any place they could reach before running out of power.
Starscream might not have been the right successor, but he had a point. As a leader, Megatron was a total yutz.

This episode holds up. There's so much stuff going on. Insecticons doing their thing, Combaticons wanting revenge, Protectobots saving people. Earth falling into the sun. Megatron working with Optimus, faking Bruticus death. It was also very well paced.
So what the hell is going on with the screenwriters for the live action movies?
They can't outdo a 22 minute cartoon?

@@noelcook8421 Yes they do. There was Hasbro/Allspark Studios 2009-2020. They were involved from the very beginning back in mid 2000s and still are going forward.
@@noelcook8421 They need to get some of the original G1 writers like Flint Dille involved to do the world building for this series. Dille has got a serious background in expansive science fiction writing, gaming and even contributed to D&D alongside creator Gary Gygax!!
Buzz Dixon would also be a great partner for Dille to work with to resolve the franchise's issues.
It's like an invisible timer chiming down and it keeps everyone on their toes without a ticking time bomb. Really fast paced and gripping.
I have to admire Shockwave’s dedication to his duty of protecting Cybertron from outside invasion

There were other episodes where Megatron and Optimus Prime put their differences aside, like that Core episode.
At 18:36, the way Megatron blasts Onslaught, Brawl and Swindle like targets on the gun range is hilarious. Plus Vortex and Blast Off falling on top of them afterwards makes it even funnier!
I know! It was made funnier too because they didn't try to draw your attention to it as something funny. Just letting it happen as part of the action.

Is it any wonder he's one of the most beloved characters in the series? So beloved that not only did they resurrect him after they killed him off in the movie, but they made him immortal so they could bring him back again any time they wanted.
Chris Latta's character was always the best in every cartoon he ever voiced.

Is it me or is the animation unusually crisp in this episode?
It's almost movie quality at times, its really pretty
The end battle sequence with Bruticus is especially good. The atteniton to detail is nearly as good as the movie, from Swindle being knocked over by Blast Off to Prime holding those two guns and being blasted down. Its excellent work. It happens every now and then in G1. The other one that springs to mind is the espisode "atlantis, arise". The end sequence has some sublime animation.
The animation is very nice in this episode.
Shockwave has got to be the most competent 80s cartoon villain ever..

Have you seen the video : shockwaves burden? It's funny as hell.
We never got to see Shockwave's true power (or his true nature of wanting to usurp Megatron's command because his incredibly logical brain demanded it) except in the comic book written by the same guy (Bob Budiansky) who gave him his stats because they weren't available when the cartoon went into production. His stats were 2nd only to Megatron's of the original Decepticons.
I always loved Onslaught and Blast Off's smug voices for some reason 😅 Combaticons and Stuntacons were my fav combiner teams

Just occurred to me, Onslaught used his backpack as the device to change the direction of the Earth, so when they merged to Bruticus @19:45 he didn't have Onlaught's backpack and cannons, and so his weakness was exposed, otherwise, both Autobots and Decepticons would have a hard time breaking through that back armor.

This episode is the ultimate peak of the entire series for me. Not least of which because this the only episode I can remember in which the Decepticons actually WIN at the end!

I was just talking about that with my children. They pick out all of the lazy errors like I did.
Shockwave: the one Decepticon always dedicated to his job. Otherwise, I think he lost every battle he was in throughout the show. Including the one with Unicron.

Shockwave has always been, and will always be one of the biggest badasses of the Decipticons. and also one of the best noise maker toys of all time. I still have that toy, 35 years later and it still works just fine making all kinds of racket. pretty sure I cause more than a few gray hairs with that thing. sorry mom.

Comic book Shockwave was much different.. (The Marvel one) IDW one is written even better..
TF Animated and TF Prime Shockwave is my personal favorites, but G1 is still good as gold.
@@Eyrothath IDW Shockwave was good until the Dark Cybertron arc. After that, the story of Shockwave going back in time and orchestrating Cybertronian history then returning as Onyx Prime is just too much. He should have died in the Dark Cybertron Arc.

Protectobots were pretty boring, though. Only First Aid ever got much of a story.
It’s unfortunate that a cartoon based on a toy line has so many characters with little to no introduction because they want to sell toys.
Hasbro was releasing so many toys at random and the writers had to include them into the cartoon and were so limited on time and budget etc.. Hasbro saw the cartoon as a giant toy ad cause it's where the money was coming from was from toy sells and it wasn't just Transfomers, most 80's cartoons were treated as sort of a toy advertisement.. The 90's somewhat changed things, cartoons got better written stories and felt more based off comic books and comic sells rather than toys.. Beast Wars was treated a lot differently and handled with a lot more care..

I taped a random episode on VHS as a kid, and this was it. As a result, Bruticus is my favorite Transformers villain.
I like how the people of Earth somehow survive when it gets that close to the sun.
The Earth was saved once again. Yay! Only like 2 feet from the sun. 1 foot more and it would have been toast. God I love this stuff. LOL

It was supposed to be part of the episode but they had to cut the fight. That's why Omega Supreme exploded when they landed on Earth; because damage Shockwave did to him.

I'll be honest, as a kid I never read a single line of the credits... I just watched the action that was happening, even if I had seen it over and over.

From a story point of view, it made perfect sense for the Combaticons to go after Shockwave especially as he was ordered by Megatron to have their original bodies disassembled and their remains placed in the detention centre when they were originally renegade Decepticons. This was a great follow up episode to Starscream's Brigade and another epic treat seeing the Autobots and the Decepticons coming together to stop a major threat. I would have liked an episode that told the backstory of the Protectobots or maybe they could have joined the battle on Cybertron as that would have been a good opportunity to showcase the debut of the new combiner team. Overall this was a fantastic episode.
One of the best episodes in the season since I grew up watching this around the episodes 'Search for Alpha Trion' till 'BOT'.
Though I do think the Protectobots' debut was out of nowhere.
18:16, I've been saying this a lot but this scene is probably by Shin Matsuo a.k.a the guy who did that wonderful Predaking stitch from 'Call of the Primitives'.
I was always really impressed by that scene..the animation throughout the episode is superb.

"Call of the Primitives" was arguably one of the best animated episodes in the series.
The Protectobots made their debut in this episode, and Optimus Prime had dispatch them into action due to the Insecticon invasion.
Always loved this episode. Went straight here when I learned season 2 dropped. 20:55 to the end was always my favorite part of the episode. The music, the foreboding feeling as the Autobots leave Cybertron. I love it.
Yeah always loved this episode, the animation was great and it was full of action right from the begining..l always thought this episode should have been the last episode of season two..It's a perfect way to lead into the movie.

I felt like the Combatacons were much more fleshed out in this. We got a better sense of their personalities where in "Starscream's Brigade" they were just generic black hats.

Decepticons always got the best combiners. The autobot ones always seemed weak. I remember Superion needing Omega Supreme to win against Menasaur in his debut. I think Computron was the only autobot combiner that actually got a one on one victory against a Decepticon combiner.
Nah, Superion solos Menasaur in Cosmic Rust, and nails a Guardian robot in War Dawn

Although later on they got power-crept to fuck and became ducks for whatever 'flavour of the week' transformer toy Hasbro were pushing that week.

Blowing Shockwave from his smokestack is always kinda funny to me. I wish they had more time for Decepticon feuding in G1..the always were more interesting than the Autobots b/c of their squabbling. Also the plot shortcuts during season 2 are really wacky.
Actually, using him as weapon against the Sentinels was really funny and ironic.

Good episode. They crammed in lot of stuff. The combaticons turning against SS makes a lot of sense since they are pissed at SS getting them banished and not succeeding in overthrowing Megatron from the last episode. Megatron having to work with Prime was a little forced. You would think Megatron having devastator and Menasor that he would not need assistance but whatever.
This show is literally amazing.

What I find funny is that when Starscream runs into Shockwave, who has been "evicted" from Cybertron, Starscream, historically was responsible for their predicament! In an earlier episode, he created the Combaticons in an attempt to form a small army to overthrow Megatron.

not only that, the whole conflict started with Starscream bitching about Shockwave. :D
