I've seen King's X at least 30 times. They're absolutely amazing, every time. Years ago I sent my band's cassette to Doug and he wrote back a long letter with commentary about each song. They're the greatest.
Doug is a Genuinely awesome dude. As a 16 year old kid in Houston, he sat with me for about 45 minutes patiently waiting to get into a show at a venue because our security didn’t know who he was; he was on the VIP list and didn’t raise a stink at all. We sat and chatted until the figured out their shit and let him in. Worthy of noting he PLAYED the venue the week before when Kings X filled Lynyrd Skynyrds spot when yet another member passed away; within a days notice they were willing to play for almost 20k people in their adopted hometown of Houston, where soooo many people don’t know they exist. No ego in the King’s X. Beautiful expressive souls who create music that I think we are still processing the depth of. Stunning is all that describes them. And cool as a fuckin cucumber about it all.
Thank you so much and you know, I just posted this and already have requests for songs from 'Dogman' and other albums pouring in - so I think a Part #2 will be happening in the near future. I love King's X and seeing the reaction from folks for this lesson already makes me really happy! Thanks for watching and ROCK ON!
Late Night Lessons sounds good! I love all their stuff but I particularly like everything before dogman even more... it’s his early solid state tone .. really does it for me...on dogman he switched to Mesa Boogie.... far far away is a classic tune along with most of the Gretchen album!! Thanks again for your efforts!!
Thank you so much and yeah, there was something really special about his early "Lab-era" tone. He still sounds great, but his old tone had so much character, it was like listening to Ty's fingerprints (or thumbprint). : ) Thanks again and ROCK ON!!!
dUg is easily the coolest "musical hero" I've ever had the fortune to meet. Incredibly gracious and kind, he also made me feel like we were old friends. And of the hundreds (maybe thousands) of shows I've seen over the years, if I could choose one player's tone that I'd be stuck with for the rest of my life it would be Ty's. Great video man!
Dude, being from Houston and being in the music scene in the early 80s and 90s to this day, they are my favorite band and dUg is my favorite singer ever! I have met all the members, actually used to play with the ex members of atomic opera that had Sam Taylor as their manager and I’m a huge Galactic Cowboys fan as well. I’ve already told my wife the day I go to meet my maker all my King’s X music go with me. All the guys are really genuine, very cool individuals. 🤘🏽 Nice picking sir👏🏻
Brother this was way cool! I'm a huge Kings-X fan. I've meet them several times and you're right Doug is one cool dude! all of them are! Thanks for the video :)
All that, and Ty is singing, on top of it all. Let that sink in.... whether he’s singing the lead vocals, on “it’s love“ or “lost in Germany“…, Or he’s singing harmony vocals on “summerland“ or “Goldilocks“ those complicated licks are underneath the amazing vocals. Ty is truly a master.
I've only seen one live King'sX show, but it was in a small venue and we were not far from the stage. It was one of the best performances I have ever seen. When I heard they were doing a concert in a town near me I bought a dozen tickets and gave them to friends, promising 'first drink is on me"I can guarantee nobody left unhappy and all are now fans. Dug,Jerry and Ty should be bigger than Zeppelin, but sometimes I like to have the feeling that I just know better than the rest of the world what good music really is.🤘👍✌🤙
How Ty got his tone was the best kept secret in music for several years. He went so far as to re-house his amps into decoy amp heads. Ty is literally the best live player out there. Satch is only guy in his league in a live setting. Ty occasionally busts out into a 10 minute improve solo during Over My Head Those moments are life changing for the guitar fans who play guitar A must see band

@@brainstain2904 Hey again. I just rewatched that video I reccomended to you and that's not the one where he discusses the "early tone" , but the video is still worth watching. That info is definitely in one of Tys interviews found on YT but I'm not sure which one. Sorry.
@@peakAV its no secret now but during that time it was. He even explains part of it came from a blown vacuum tube in one of his amps. When other musicians were around he said he would cover up some of the gear so they wouldnt see exactly what was going on. Of course this was done in fun as he seems to be one of the nicest, down to earth cats you could possibly meet.
Just saw King's X tonight. Incredible show!!!!! How Ty gets a strat to sound the way he did was jea dropping!!!!. I came right home and watched both vids. Incredible player with such feel and taste. Damn he was awesome. Thx Dave do another Ty Tabor video and keep up the great work 🤘 his chord work was amazing too. Thx🎸
Thanks for this! King's X is my all time favorite band - love seeing them get some publicity. You have to see them live, I've seen them at least a dozen times and they're always amazing.
Pleiades live in 89 blew my head off. A tiny club in St. Louis. Gretchen had been out for a month. Have been a follower ever since. Great channel, keep it up.
Massive Kings x fan here. I love when Doug turns the mic around and the crowd goes wild. We nerds know exactly what’s about to happen! I shaved my head and went to a concert. Doug looked at me and lifted his hat to show his bald head and nodded. So cool. Great video!!
Thank you for creating this overview!!!!! "It's Love" was also my intro to this phenomenal band (and Ty's playing) when I was in high school. So cool to see/hear an explanation (and appreciation) of those fantastic chords & riffs! Didn't think I could appreciate the playing any more than I have been! Thanks!
This is a great channel. I love KX and echo all the comments about their inventiveness and public humility and generosity (it’s been almost 20 years since seeing them). Thanks for the guitar lesson.
Whew!! Another great video. Again, a band so close to my heart I don’t know where to begin. The self titled album is crazy underrated (thanx for Lost In Germany!) but Gretchen is one of the best rock albums ever. Anyone who knows anything knows they should have been much bigger. Great work!!!!
I can't believe I am just now watching this. You completely nailed it. The chords and shapes to my favorite Ty Riffs I have seen King's X live over 15 times spanning from 1990-2005. Always standing in front watching Ty hands doing interesting chords shapes. Thanks for doing this.
David, your Vito Bratta vid popped up in my suggestions - his licks on Pride are still some of my favourites, but I’m strictly a rhythm player...which led to Van Helen chords lesson (totally with you on Fair Warning for album top spot). When you broke down the Hear About It Later intro, I immediately heard shades of Ty...so I was literally about to comment to that affect and ask if you were familiar with Kings X...but decided to check out your full channel list first, thinking nah, I’m sure there couldn’t be a Ty Tabor lesson...and WOW! This made my day! I don’t know any music theory - playing stuff purely by ear for 30 years now, but I’m loving your knowledge, and joy for the how these licks are put together. So, so good. Thank you. And yes...the world SHOULD know Kings X. Ty especially has the Midas touch - every project he touches is pure gold. My current fave songs to jam are Mission, Pleiades...and Freedom...because, well...side projects are awesome...but you just can’t beat the sheer musical majesty of Jerry, dUg & Ty
Thanks so much Stuart! I LOVE King's X and I'm really getting excited to hear that new album they're working on. I bet it's going to be GREAT! Take care, stay tuned for more lessons, and thanks again! : )
Stuart, I did the same thing except I didn’t go through the whole channel before I made the request. King’s X is my all time favorite band. So glad to see fans and appreciation for their music!
I find King's X's music calming, and peaceful. Ty's tones on those early records is so amazing. I saw them live back then, and Ty got those same tones live. He had all his gear stuffed into 2 Marshall headcases powering 4 cabs, and the sound was glorious.
King's X is one of my 5 favorite bands. Being Brazilian amolst none of that stuff you would find here so the first time I listen to them was 94. But was really a savior as the only things radio would play was grunge. Not that I don't like It, I love Alice in Chains and Soundgarden but I was born in 75 and grew up listening to Van Halen, Dokken, TNT, Kiss... And most of these bands were "gone". Thanks, mate. I really like your Channel. Cheers from Brazil
Love this! King's X has been my favorite band since the early 90s, and I have always been amazed at Ty's riffs as a guitarist. Lost in Germany is like the God riff to me. And you do it flawlessly. Wow.
I lived in Pearl,Ms back in the 90's..Ty Tabor's hometown as well as Tommy Aldridge(Whitesnake). I played in several bands while I lived there and once played in an acoustic trio that played at Ty's Uncles Coffee Shop a couple of times. Never met either of them but played with people that did.
Excellent video. Ty Tybor is indeed very underrated. Great channel. Keep up the good work. Inspired me to pick up the guitar after 10 years (and actually learn the theory as well!)
That's great to hear and thank you so much! I'm happy to hear that I've inspired a few folks to pick up their guitar and play. Sometimes all you need is a little spark to create a creative fire. : )
The greatest groove laden melodic hard rock band of all time. Ty,Dug and Jerry also put out killer solo stuff in their own right. Great band. Great musicians.
I have way more catching up with your channel to do but this video is one of my faves so far. I’ll never forget hearing their stuff in a shopping mall music store (a near extinct species) for the first time and having a similar “Whoa, what and *who* is that?!?” reaction. It felt different than anything I’d ever heard and give both prog rock and melodius Beatles vibes at the same time. For some reason I kept waiting to hear one more chord at the end of the “It’s Love” progression but I think I might be confusing something they were doing with their vocal harmony with guitar part lol - I need to re-listen since it’s been awhile. Love the few sneaky little just-outside notes Ty throws into outro solo too in that one. Would love to see King’s X revisited in your 3 licks series too. Those bends of Ty’s... phew! Big big fan of all the King’s X guys though and excited to see what they do in their new album. Sorry for the wall of text. I get excited about certain things musically and have to make myself stop typing/talking lol. Cheers!
King's X has definitely been one of the most amazing bands I discovered during the last few months. Thanks for this video so much, man! I absolutely love Ty Tabor's use of chords, but I've been struggling a bit to learn them by ear, so thank you again!
I posted my previous comment before I watched the clip, yer man here has the same authentic, down to earth vibe as the guys in Kings X & his ability to impart this very hip musical information is stunning, deffo gonna subscribe right now 👍🎶😎
I first saw King's X (Out of the Silent Planet) when they opened for Hurricane in Springfield Missouri. Musical perfection!!! No other way to explain it. They completely changed how I listened to music, and that overall tone the band has is just inspiring.
Great lesson KingsX is definitely one of my favorite bands of all time! And Ty is amazing he writes such cool riff and chord arrangements his approach to the instrument is totally unique. Using open strings like pedal tone ideas, drop tuning very interesting great Job bruh 👍
Such great times seeing these guys play live! Hey Dave here’s an idea… part two would be awesome! Could you cover there bestselling album “ Dogman “ so much great music on that one. Thanks ❤
I TOTALLY love these guys and have for a long time. I think I was still in high school when I finally heard them and I was hooked! I can't wait to hear the new album too. It's gonna be good from what I've heard about it and you can tell they've totally put their hearts and minds into it. : )
So cool to shine more light, on such a criminally overlooked band. I have seen them twice, and don’t understand why they aren’t massive. I agree about manic moonlight, tape-head is another favorite. But I honestly love everything!!
Never forgot when I heard "Out of the silent planet" from GGTN for the first time. What an unusual and distinct tune! Later I saw King's X open for AC/DC in Oldenburg, Northern Germany, and I felt I was the only person in the audience who liked them. Not a really good fit for AC/DC fans, I think. And unfortunately that experience seems to have led them to make the song "Lost in Germany" a little later...
I just discovered your channel since I saw you’re playing the music of one of my all time favorite bands! King’s X! I’ve loved their music for over 35 years now.
Hey David! Your vid here was in my suggested feed this morning! As a HUGE KX fan, I was so happy to watch. Thanks for the work, and I subscribed, so looking forward to watching more. Keep up the great work!
I discovered your channel last week with "The Chords of Van Halen". That "Chordplay" series is very interesting : there is too many lessons about lead and fancy techniques, not enough about what occupies 90% of the time of the average guitar player : playing chords and rhythm parts.
Great explanation and understanding! I got SO MUCH out of this video and I don't even play guitar! (but I DO know the King's X library pretty thoroughly and play piano and drums). Glad to see your great appreciation. Thank you!
Wow!! how did i miss this?!?! Thanx Dave!!! Ty is one of my favorites. I've met them several times at shows. Great group of people indeed. Yeah i love Manic Moonlight lp too👍
It was Doug and Jerry who played with Phil Keaggy. Ty's band opened for them once. He played drums in that particular band! Keaggy actually plays a solo on Jerry's second solo album, Love & Scars!
Besides the killer riffs and amazing vocals, the timing tricks and mysterious lyrical content make them one of my all time favorite bands. Thanks so much for this...I wish you could delve deeper into them....they are indeed a treasure trove of awesomeness. Their stuff is truly a spiritual experience.
There is another band who used chord progressions in much the same manner during the 90s. Black Eyed Sceva, mostly playing on clean tone but their music is awesome.
My favorite band and you do an excellent job of sharing your great guitar work , ill be looking at those riffs and the way you play them until I get it right , Thankyou so much for sharing , I subscribed your excellent man !
Great video dude, beautifully played, really spot-on, enjoyed that, I’m really getting back into Kings X now and I’m even starting to write songs like them, I’ll start posting them up when I get them down!
Brother - you are killin' "Lost In Germany"! I absolutely love it! I wished you lived in my Michigan hometown so I could finally jam drums with a guitar player who can actually pull off a King's X cover other than Summerland. LOL!
Great Stuff. Thanks for opening up some of this for us. I’ve been messing around trying to learn some of this. The Lost in Germany riff is incredible to me also because he helps sing the song too! I can’t wait to get off of work get home and try this. It really is a shame how overlooked this band is!
I learned alot from this video thanks for posting. I've been a Kings X fan for a while now and Ty Tabor is definitely a unique guitarist. Gretchen Goes To Nabraska I'd say is one of there best albums and one everybody should check out.
Hi David, it's funny I was listening to the house of hair and they played three songs by Kings X and that's what started it. Then your video popped up and your right, their very good. Seems like most of my older life I'm always searching for a new band or sound I missed when I was younger especially when I worked so much I really didn't have time. Picking the guitar back up a few years back has alot to do with it also, lol. Great videos, keep 'em coming.
First time I've watched one your vids. Very well done. Love Kings X and you've done a great job ripping apart their tunes and giving as insight to Ty Tabor's melodic, heavy style. I'm a bass player but still really enjoyed the vid that almost, just almost made me think it wouldn't be that bad if I also played a bit of guitar. lol
The most underrated band in the history of popular music!
You got that right.
Ty is probably the most underrated guitarist I can think of.
Once again, thank you David. I gave up on "Summerland" years ago. Now I can go work on it again. "It's Love" should've won a Grammy. Great channel.

No ego in the King’s X. Beautiful expressive souls who create music that I think we are still processing the depth of. Stunning is all that describes them. And cool as a fuckin cucumber about it all.

Great lesson KingsX is definitely one of my favorite bands of all time! And Ty is amazing he writes such cool riff and chord arrangements his approach to the instrument is totally unique. Using open strings like pedal tone ideas, drop tuning very interesting great Job bruh 👍
Kings X, underexposed but NEVER underrated! I have never met a musician who was not a Kings X fan. Great video! Cheers! V
Massive fan of King's X here and loved this lesson. We need more!
David,
Killer video...killer series! Thanks for doing this - very inspirational/influential!
Thank you so much!
There's more on the way - stay tuned!
: )
How does a hack like "The Tone King" get so many subscribers? Channels like this should be RUclips royalty!
Thank you! I cannot watch "The Tone King"!!
Such great times seeing these guys play live! Hey Dave here’s an idea… part two would be awesome! Could you cover there bestselling album “ Dogman “ so much great music on that one. Thanks ❤
I love your breakdowns. Keep them coming. Like yourself, it’s love was what first hooked me on the X. Great Texas 3 piece.
Crushing! LIG is one of my all time killer riffs! His timing is what makes Ty so Epic! TY So much for the lesson!
OGM-thank you! I get these songs stuck in my head and the only way to deal with it is to learn them!
Love Kings X....they were one of a kind man
Huge Ty Tabor fan here. Found your channel because of this video. Happy to subscribe! Awesome stuff, David. :)
I just discovered your channel since I saw you’re playing the music of one of my all time favorite bands! King’s X! I’ve loved their music for over 35 years now.
Dude, great lesson. LOVE KingsX.... I will be checking many more of your vids... Thnx
That was superb. I've had the joy of seeing them live three times, the first was in Glasgow for the Faith Hope and Love tour. What a band.
Thank you!
Great break down and lesson on the inimitable Ty Tabor style of playing and writing.
Thanks very much.
Wow!! how did i miss this?!?!
You are such a good teacher dude
Besides the killer riffs and amazing vocals, the timing tricks and mysterious lyrical content make them one of my all time favorite bands. Thanks so much for this...I wish you could delve deeper into them....they are indeed a treasure trove of awesomeness. Their stuff is truly a spiritual experience.
I appreciate your videos and channel so much! Ty is the professor of melody and should have been the fifth Beatle lol cheers man!
Great stuff man!! Really appreciate you putting it out there.
Brother - you are killin' "Lost In Germany"! I absolutely love it! I wished you lived in my Michigan hometown so I could finally jam drums with a guitar player who can actually pull off a King's X cover other than Summerland. LOL!
Absolutely love your work
A great selection of their riffs. Not that there is a shortage of King’s X riffs or anything. 😀
Brilliant, would love to hear the difference, one of my fave songs of theirs
Hi David, it's funny I was listening to the house of hair and they played three songs by Kings X and that's what started it. Then your video popped up and your right, their very good. Seems like most of my older life I'm always searching for a new band or sound I missed when I was younger especially when I worked so much I really didn't have time. Picking the guitar back up a few years back has alot to do with it also, lol. Great videos, keep 'em coming.
Hi, meant to ask you why your strings make so much noise when you pick them?
Ty is one of my favorite guitar players ever!
Another nifty riff that’s a fun one to play... Cigarettes... same vibe as your lesson...👍🏻
Thanks man...some of those chords have eluded me for years.
Love your stuff, bro. Huge fan.
Excellent....thank you....
First time I've watched one your vids. Very well done. Love Kings X and you've done a great job ripping apart their tunes and giving as insight to Ty Tabor's melodic, heavy style. I'm a bass player but still really enjoyed the vid that almost, just almost made me think it wouldn't be that bad if I also played a bit of guitar. lol
