should totally name him Chester. he just seems like a Chester to me. Bettas are my favorite fish. atm, i got four: two females and two males. one male and one female are Veiltails, one female might be a Crowntail(she's a Petco Baby, so she's still growing), and one male is a Doubletail Halfmoon.
I used to combat so many misconceptions about bettas when I worked in a fish store. Many just did not believe me. Frequently I heard, "I had a betta in a goldfish bowl and he lived for a year and a half!".... Yeah, not good dude, not good... Sigh. It makes me so happy you're so articulate and informative. This kind of information being spread and prominent is incredibly important. I love bettas (all fish really but I enjoy both male bettas and female sororities,) so it is so disheartening when people believe myths about them. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain proper care for these guys.
I had a fluval flora 14.5g cycling for a bit, i ended up coming home with a betta that was in the store in a cup for a long time... he was active and a... half moonfancy but kinda has a dull color compared to the rest I took him home because kids / parents would go for the bright colored ones that were cheap.
Side note I kinda feel bad for the other bettas that will end up in 1 gallon tanks and die as a decoration while my guy has the run of his planted tank
My Betta is in a 10 g all to himself. He beats on anyone I've put in with him. He's VERY interactive. He'd rather I talk to him than eat. Thanks for another great video.
That's a really nice piece of wood you got in there. I'm very envious. I recently lost my dragon betta. I had kept him for 4 and half years. I agree that clean water is very important, and soft filtration is a must. I use a small canister filter by zoo-med and aim the spray bar to buffer current. Longer tail bettas and especially half moons need a gentle current. I miss him everyday.
I love this. I love bettas and they're so widely abused by the pet industry. Hopefully your video can lead to some future pet bettas being treated better. I think a good name would be Cobalt! Or Ultramarine 😊
I have a all red veil tail Betta in my 29 gal tank. He's with some neons, rose minnows, some baby koi, AND 1 ghost shrimp. There was a bit of an adjustment when I first got him and he stayed in a breeder net/box for about a month to get use to being in something other than a cup, from when I bought him. I have plenty of floating plants for him to rest in and he often goes to the bottom and hides in a ceramic log. He seems to love his territory! After the stay in the breeder net he got along great with the other fish! I guess he had to figure out they were not there to eat him or something. Thanks for this video Rachel because I have a friend I've been battling with over the way she has her Bettas. Going to send her the link.
THANK YOU! Bettas got me back into the fish keeping hobby and it pains me how under-educated even professionals are when it comes to bettas. Love the informative video :) He needs a... classy sass name.
thanks for making this video! bettas are one of more misunderstood and mistreated fish in this hobby, it makes me so happy to see people like you educating people about the basic care and needs of fish. i adore these cute little fish, they are just so full of personality and personable that it breaks my heart to see them in small bowls and cups without heaters or filters just because they are hardy and can breathe air. i have a beautiful male veiltail in a 5.5g, he is very curious and friendly. i cant imagine not owning one now that ive been keeping bettas for the past few years
I've been scouring youtube for betta videos and i found yours to be one of the absolute most informative, so from somebody who has NO idea what they're doing, thank you SO much for this i can't wait to bring my new lil baby home
This video appeared just as I'm researching betta tanks (guess what I'm buying with all my Christmas money!). He looks like a "Pulse"...the way his colour just pulses along his body as his fins move. Your videos have really helped. In the last 2 months we have cycled and stocked a 29L nano tank AND a 240L tropical community tank, massively influenced by your various tips.
Such a beautiful aquascape. Seeing these guys-even goldfish-housed in tiny containers breaks my heart. I just think, good God, what a short, miserable life he must have led. Obviously, they don’t have cognition like we do, but they can experience pain and react negatively to stressors in their environment. Seeing him in this natural setting with all of that space, I realize just how beautiful they are, and how much of that beauty is lost when they don’t have room to move around.
Since he's a "crown" tail, he should have a royal name. Since he's sassy, I'm thinking Harry would be appropriate. Lol Although I admit that I do appreciate the name Indigo Montoya. You can't go wrong with a well placed Princess Bride reference. 😉
Super great video! Thank you thank you thank you. Here are some possible names... Zaffre - A deep blue pigment created by roasting cobalt ore. Oxford - "Blues" are awarded at Oxford and Cambridge Lapis - A blue stone used to make ancient ultramarine dyes and pigments. Slate - dark bluish grey Indigo My favorite is Zaffre.
I LOVE this scape in this tank. I might try something like this eventually. My Crowntail (his name is Perseus) is quite happy in his 5 gallon tank. It's nice to have a little friend that I can appreciate every day.
Congrats on the new Betta - you will raise awareness of proper Betta care by becoming an owner. Thank you for that. Excellent names include: 1. Red 2. Bubbles 3.Slider 4.Gator 5. Sue
Pretty good video about bettas But I should add 1 more thing: They can be jumpers so a cover is needed (to not risk him jumping / dying) edit: I see that you have some cover but I said this for all the people who will want a Betta :D
this is the only channel (how to/informative) and whatnot where I don't see pretentious youtubers trying to correct your info. kudos tho, fr. its like you do your research or something lol
That's a beautiful crowntail. I currently have a plakat betta named Dwalin who shares a 29 gallon tank with black neons, rummynose tetras, and sterbai cories. He's definitely the centerpiece fish of the tank.
You are my favourite RUclipsr! You and KingOfDIY are my number one fish channels! Keep up the amazing work!!! Sending love all the way from Tasmania, Australia :-D
I got my first Betta today, from a UK chain pet store - Pets at Home. They had them in tanks there rather than cups, and asked a lot of questions about my set up, I even had to sign a digital form and stuff, they seemed well cared for and my boy is happy in his 5.5 now :D
Breaks my heart when I see bettas in little tiny bowls as show pieces. There's no way theyre happy like that. My betta is in a 52 gal with a bunch of other fish and he's doing awesome... Name him Samurai Jack
Might be silly since I am new to the hobby but I can see alot of 10 gallon tanks in my future as these fish seem to be more interactive. So far at feeding time i jist have to tap the top of the water like a insect and he comes up to lurk for food
He's a beauty! What a beautiful blue! And that two forked crown tail. (I'm quite partial to double forks, as my first betta was one) Also, your information is on point. This is one of the most complete and truthful guides to bettas that I have seen
I definitely think he looks like a Snider for Twisted Sister. All that glam and sass! I just lost my buddy, Beau, a black and red dragon scale betta at 4 years old who traveled with me across the country from Seattle to Chicago and he was just gorgeous. I kept him in a 10 gal with neons and some cory catfish and he did wonderfully. I bought him as an impulse from Petco when I was homesick in Seattle and just couldn't resist.
nice timing! i just bought a betta today, he seems really quite happy in my 40L fry tank along with some 2 month old cory paleatus. also, he's the same exact colour as your one, but with short fins.
I always learn a lot with you Rachel! I agree with what you said. In my own experience, they are not sturdy at all. I've tried like 4 or 5 times during my several years with tanks to keep bettas and I always failed. I have just one community tank and my problem I think has been always the food. I feed my fishes with flakes and quite often the bettas ended up eating too much and getting an intestinal block (quite common with bettas) and while I tried the most popular solution (feeding them with cooked peas), I've always failed and they ended up dying. Now I'm really afraid to try again, but the problem is that I love their personality: quiet and curious. I hope one day I find a way to keep them alive :).
I'm sorry you've had such problems trying to keep Bettas. I don't feed any of my fish flakes because I wonder about the additives. That's purely a personal decision, not a scientific one and perhaps I have nothing to worry about but...I have seen in a few internet places that the peas take a long time to pass through the Bettas and that defrosted brine shrimp are better at keeping them 'regular, because they are protein and have shells for fibre. My boy Rocky didn't like them when I first got him but now he loves them and enjoys following them around the tank so he doesn't miss even one. Mind you he only gets a few each time as overeating/overfeeding is a killer. I'm wondering whether you have cycled your tank before adding a fish? At my local fish store they told me I didn't need to because they are so hardy. I didn't take any notice and made sure my tank was cycled first. A lot of the beneficial bacteria died after I added him to the tank, mainly I think, because he didn't produce enough ammonia to keep them alive. That created a mini loss of cycle but daily small water changes kept him safe until the bacteria balanced itself out. I wish you great success in the future because they have great and entertaining personalities.
As Crowntails are also called Fringe or Comb tails, I would suggest Freddy Fringetail or Cookie Combtail. I love Bettas and I'm glad you're doing a fine presentation on these great fish.
I got a crowntail betta in november. Have him in a 5.5g tank by himself, he is very calm and chill. I use an aquaclear 20 for a filter on the lowest setting and it works very well. His temps are 78-80F with a 50w heater. Love my little guy. Need to name him one day. He is white with some light blue on his fins.
Betta roll call! Don't forget- I need name suggestions for this little dude! Buy me a coffee: msjinkzd.com/about_msjinkzd/support-our-site/ Instagram @msjinkzd Website and stocklist: msjinkzd.com/stocklist/ Facebook: facebook.com/msjinkzd/
Rachel O'leary Azure would be a really cool name for a male betta who just so happens to be blue. 😉 great video! I also have a yellow betta named Freddi.
He's a beautiful royal blue so maybe something with a regal tone... Caesar, Tiberius, Alexander? Or to go with the more surly nature of bettas, something like Brutus. I'm fond of "Xander" or even "Xan" as a shortened form of Alexander. Really great video, btw! I like that my knowledge of bettas aligns perfectly with what you said here because it means I'm on the right track. :) You've got such a wealth of knowledge about this hobby. Thanks for sharing so much!
I know I'm late af but Blue Steel/Derek Zoolander (DZ) would be great. Love the video btw. I just got a King plakat myself and I'm making sure he gets the utmost care. Did my hardcore research before getting one. Just remember people pets are living creatures, not decorations.
I have my boy Dasher in a beautiful 6.5 gallon tank for him to spread out more as he has long fins as well. And I don't want to stress him out. He is my boy and he knows it! He is my only Betta fish right now and I love him so much ❤️❤️😍🥰!
I have had my crowntail for going on three years. I love this little fella. His name is Blugill. He is very very similar to the one you have. We have staring contests lol and he's learning to jump for treats.
I HATE seeing bettas in those teeny tiny cups! We had a betta and got the biggest "betta tank" they had in the tore at the time... but then a friend gave me a 10-gallon tank ... and WOW that was one HAPPY fish. I felt I could just sense his excitement & wonder over having so much space. I've never used filtration on the tank, BUT I do 1 gallon water-change every day or every second day (I use a turkey baster to suck out the fish poop from the gravel, because with a 10-gallon tank, by the time I get the gravel-vac going, the water is all swished around & the poop is everywhere -- so a turkey baster from the dollar store is easier). I had real plants in with him as well. At the time I had bettas, nobody in any of the stores mentioned that I could get frozen bloodworms! Had I known about them, I would have fed him that instead of the dried ones. (Did you know that the frozen bloodworms make great food for Venus Fly Trap plants??) Since putting mine in a bigger tank, I would never *ever* put one in a tiny cup or bowl! I have African Dwarf Frogs now, though, so no bettas for me till they've lived out their lives, unless I get another tank. Ooooh another tank .....
Even though you have so many different plants in there, it still looks cool! I would suggest a better and brighter light though. You also have those snails.
Hey Guys- IBC has a facebook page as well as the website listed in the video: facebook.com/groups/InternationalBettaCongress/permalink/1205663529535722/?notif_id=1511293564131587¬if_t=group_post_mention
Hey Rachel. I have a question. I bought a Betta female just 2 days ago. Today I found a small foam or film floating on the water surface. Could that be eggs and if so do they have a chance to hatch. What could I do. Thanks so much in advance.
I love my Betta, I named him Uncle San because of his colors, Red White and blue. he lives with a Rainbow shark and 2 Panda cats, they been together in a 10 gal tank for over 2 years and no problem.
I've had 3 bettas; Dog, Ravioli, and Galavant. Dog and Ravioli were both very sassy fish, and they would flare at the slightest provocation. Galavant, however, is the meekest little betta I've ever seen! He's a gorgeous halfmoon, but he's tiny and very, very shy.
Hi Rachael, love your videos. I haven't been fortunate with bettas. Right now I have a female elephant ear who is lethargic, stays at the bottom most of the time with a building tummy. She is the only Betta in my tank with peaceful tank mates like Cory's, guppies and neon tetras. My tank is 5 gallons and she is eating but not keeping well overall. What should I do. I don't want to lose her. If you can please help.
I'm not a huge fan of male bettas because of their crazy tails but I pretty much always have a single female betta in my 100 liter (26 gallon) tank. Actually my current betta is just a few weeks old and to my surprise switched tanks on her own. I actually have three tanks side-by side and apparently she wanted to check one of the other tanks as well - though she moved back to her initial tank already. She can jump surprisingly high as the heights are not even. That has never happened before with any of my bettas despite the fact that I don't actually keep my aquariums covered save for the one with espe's rasboras as they tend to sleep near surface and jump out if startled. I'm not too worried about her jumping on the floor though - she seems smart enough to not do that.
Love your video! Thanks for sharing so much information with us, there's a meeting of the International Betta Congress near me and I'll be attending soon. :) Thanks again.
Hi Rachel I was hoping you could give me some advice. I have a betta in the exact same tank as yours and I recently added a few cherry shrimp. The betta is very docile and they live happily together my problem is with the tanks flow. We turned it right down and added a sponge to the nozzle to keep the water movement as low as possible for the betta but while researching we found shrimp need slightly higher oxygenation in the water (correct me if I am wrong as there seems to be so much conflicting info in this hobby online.) There is flow at the water surface but I'm not sure whether the water tension is breaking. There are live plants in the aquarium if that info is helpful. Any advice is very welcome! Should I add an air stone for the shrimp or should there be sufficient oxygen for the little guys?
MisAnthropy I’m not sure if you watch Joey on King of DIY, and he helped is young daughter’s Fluval Spec with 🍒 shrimp anda Betta and live plants, that seemed fine. I’m sure every Betta is different. Good luck, and it should be cool.
I had a beta that just recently passed in the same tank. He looked identical to yours too how funny. His name was Randell from the monster in monsters inc lol
should totally name him Chester. he just seems like a Chester to me.
Bettas are my favorite fish. atm, i got four: two females and two males. one male and one female are Veiltails, one female might be a Crowntail(she's a Petco Baby, so she's still growing), and one male is a Doubletail Halfmoon.
Aura Fish i agree on Chester! I have a VT male and female, CT male, and one baby whos either Going to be CT or VT
Chester is the best... er.
I just found your channel. I'm loving it, so much great info. My suggestion is Charleston.
+Carmen Watson welcome!
Stud or Spud !?
Name it Frank..... I checked. Its not taken.
hahahahaha, a lot of folks have suggested I name it Joey
what about the name of ur new flowerhorn bro
The king of DIY FRANNNNK!
Frank Jr.
LOL
I want to cry every time someone treats their betta like a magical fish that doesn't mind abuse. Thank you for making this!
I had a fluval flora 14.5g cycling for a bit, i ended up coming home with a betta that was in the store in a cup for a long time... he was active and a... half moonfancy but kinda has a dull color compared to the rest
I took him home because kids / parents would go for the bright colored ones that were cheap.
Sorry
Love the informative video :)
He needs a... classy sass name.
This is a great and very informative video. Love the history on how long they have been kept in aquariums... really enjoyed this !! Thanks !

Sid Fishious in honor of the rocker!
I like the name Cobalt.
Great to hear someone with influence in the fish hobby spread solid Betta care info!

Super great video! Thank you thank you thank you.
Here are some possible names...
Zaffre - A deep blue pigment created by roasting cobalt ore.
Oxford - "Blues" are awarded at Oxford and Cambridge
Lapis - A blue stone used to make ancient ultramarine dyes and pigments.
Slate - dark bluish grey
Indigo
My favorite is Zaffre.
Excellent names include:
1. Red
2. Bubbles
3.Slider
4.Gator
5. Sue
Pretty good video about bettas
But I should add 1 more thing: They can be jumpers so a cover is needed (to not risk him jumping / dying)
edit: I see that you have some cover but I said this for all the people who will want a Betta :D
There is a clear plastic cover on this Fluval 5 gallon... 🐳
I doubt he could clear the water with those fins
Kingsley. He seems like a royal in that tank and his fins look awesome.
this is the only channel (how to/informative) and whatnot where I don't see pretentious youtubers trying to correct your info. kudos tho, fr. its like you do your research or something lol

Love his color! Crowntails are my favorite, I have a little red one.
It’s no doubt already been said, but “Jinkz”. Thanks for this, i really enjoy my Bettas and am happy to hear your thoughts on them.
Might be silly since I am new to the hobby but I can see alot of 10 gallon tanks in my future as these fish seem to be more interactive.
So far at feeding time i jist have to tap the top of the water like a insect and he comes up to lurk for food
I'm new too. The bettas are just so beautiful although I think I like the plakats and other shorter finned the best.
Love bettas. Love Rachel O'leary. Excited to see this video.
He's a beauty! What a beautiful blue! And that two forked crown tail.
(I'm quite partial to double forks, as my first betta was one)
Also, your information is on point. This is one of the most complete and truthful guides to bettas that I have seen

Nice video, I hope it will encourage people to keep their bettas in better conditions :)
nozii06 Where do you see a tumor? That bump by his caudal peduncle is just his swim bladder :)
Indigo Montoya (Color and Princess Bride reference)
+Bakezori love it!
NothingPosted905 I know this is old...but, that may be the best comment ever!! I loled. Nicely done!
Bakezori indigo I like
I had a Betta named Indigo Montoya!
nice timing! i just bought a betta today, he seems really quite happy in my 40L fry tank along with some 2 month old cory paleatus. also, he's the same exact colour as your one, but with short fins.

Awesome and much needed educational video of the Betta. Name? Mr Sassy.
Blueberry is a good name
That's what I named my halfmoon with the same colour...but then I saw another one with the same name, so I tweaked it to Burberry.
My blue Bettas name is blueberry
My first betta was Blueberry, the one I kept in a bowl as a kid :/ Lovely. Loved that fish though, so I like this name!
Ken Nowak that’s my Betta fishes name!!
What about Cassius? He was a great fighter.
my favourite colour for a crowntail the blue fins and body and the black head makes it look so outstanding in a tank of green plants
Betta roll call! Don't forget- I need name suggestions for this little dude!

Rachel O'leary Azure would be a really cool name for a male betta who just so happens to be blue. 😉 great video! I also have a yellow betta named Freddi.

I would name him Toothless, because he is black and blue just like the dragon from the movie (escpecially part 2) and his fins are just like wings :)
Butch!
Always informative. Thanks. My nomination is: Bruce. Pretty sassy name.
I know I'm late af but Blue Steel/Derek Zoolander (DZ) would be great.
Love the video btw. I just got a King plakat myself and I'm making sure he gets the utmost care.
Did my hardcore research before getting one.
Just remember people pets are living creatures, not decorations.
Beautiful tank and beautiful fish! Love your videos
I have my boy Dasher in a beautiful 6.5 gallon tank for him to spread out more as he has long fins as well. And I don't want to stress him out. He is my boy and he knows it! He is my only Betta fish right now and I love him so much ❤️❤️😍🥰!
What's that plant called on the top of your tank hanging out the filter?
Great to see a video about such a commonly mistreated fish from someone who knows so much.
Name him Barry... BlueBarry 😁
Great information. Thank you for helping to educate people on his misunderstood fish
I have had my crowntail for going on three years. I love this little fella. His name is Blugill. He is very very similar to the one you have. We have staring contests lol and he's learning to jump for treats.
Does he have blue gills by any chance? 8^)
margaret wood he was all bright blue until recently his tail part has started turning a red color
Bettas are so cute ☺️
this is so important for beginners who think betas are very easy to care for + you are so beautiful
+Marwan Almehairi thanks marwan
(Did you know that the frozen bloodworms make great food for Venus Fly Trap plants??)
Since putting mine in a bigger tank, I would never *ever* put one in a tiny cup or bowl! I have African Dwarf Frogs now, though, so no bettas for me till they've lived out their lives, unless I get another tank. Ooooh another tank .....
Loving this tank! I want to try moss but am a little wary of them getting out of control.
So regal, Sir Lawrence after Olivier. Great score Rachel he is lovely. 😍
King Blue. (Crown Tail). Gorgeous. Just bought my first crown tail-beautiful Red. This makes my 5th. Betta.
My Betta's name is Stormy, because the weather that day. I do like old fashioned names like Raynard and Damian.
"Sassy," is a Cute name for your Cute Betta and "Royal," is a Great name since your Betta has a Beautiful Blue color. Good video!
You already have Captain Crankypants, so why not Sergeant Sassypants?
Rachel is soooooo knowledgable.
Thanks Rachel, I always trust your advice.
Finally a betta video from you.... maam... conventional from the unconventional lady....😊😊
they are a timeless classic, i think :) It was way overdue
+Rachel O'leary you can say that again maam
Awesome! I am cycling this same model. Betta waiting.
Even though you have so many different plants in there, it still looks cool! I would suggest a better and brighter light though. You also have those snails.
I like the name Laz, short for Lazuli since he is a beautiful blue. As a betta enthusiast I really enjoy seeing videos about them
O my goodness thank you... this is great commentary for newbies
Call him Lapis after the stone lapis lazuli, his colour is amazing !, hi from Liverpool UK and thanks for all your advice. ;-)xx
I love my Betta, I named him Uncle San because of his colors, Red White and blue. he lives with a Rainbow shark and 2 Panda cats, they been together in a 10 gal tank for over 2 years and no problem.
best video about betta care.
King because he is royal blue. Thanks for doing a video of Betta splendens!
He looks like a 'Sergeant' to me. Totally in control of his environment! Love ya work!
I always liked the name Sebastian for a Betta male. Gorgeous aquascape btw!
I have one that is little and shy, too - a halfmoon. He does come to interact when he sees me and seems happy - he's just an introvert;^)
I have one just like this in a 7.5 gal. I named mine Max as in Betta-Max.
Rachel, i just got one just like yours yesterday. i've named him Zulo because of his blue color. Blue in Spanish is "azul" ( pronounced Ah- zool)..
With all those tanks, how the heck do you find time to keep your living room so beautiful! LOL those floors SHINE!!!! way to go!
I really love this video! It was so informative!
Bettas are my favorites, and the Spec V is a near-perfect tank for them.
Bigger is always better baby!
For tank or the fish
Name him Shredder, lol.
H.C. Aqua Love it! 🤣
Absolutely! I have never kept one in anything smaller than a 29.
Ive had my betta for 5 years and he doesnt make bubble nests anymore, do you think it might be because of his age?
Also... Herbert's a good name :)
Love your video! Thanks for sharing so much information with us, there's a meeting of the International Betta Congress near me and I'll be attending soon. :)
Thanks again.
They are an incredible group! I hope you enjoy it!
Nice overview video, thanks!
You’re so amazing!!! Tell and keep spreading the right facts! Like I like about 2.5 + gallons. You’re great! I request more betta videos :)
That fish is really hunky and very active, so cool :)
+MisAnthropy that will be fine for the shrimp
Rachel O'leary Thank you for the reply!
Really love the aquascape. What are the plants you use in that tank? I would really love to replicate it for my betta. Thank you in advance
+Benny Yang dwarf hairgras (tropical acicularis), bucephelandra mini Catherine, anubias bonsai, echinodorus reni, moss and subwassertang
I have a Elephant Ear Betta Boy named Batman started in a gallon bowl now in a 5 gallon Marineland tank. My boy is so much fun and feisty.
Your betta looks happy an healthy! Nice=)
I had a beta that just recently passed in the same tank. He looked identical to yours too how funny. His name was Randell from the monster in monsters inc lol
I just subscribed I love your videos I live in Canada so hello from Canada
Possible tank mates depending on the Betta of course? Would love to hear your thoughts
