I just bought my daughter her first betta. I went to a specialty aquarium store, and was told that the 2 gallon fish bowl that I picked out was too large. The salesgirl tried to convince me that bettas prefer tiny spaces. I went with my intuition and bought the largest bowl they had. I’m so sad that I was given such misinformation and our poor little fish has probably been suffering because of it. Thank you for putting this helpful info out there. I’m gunna pick up a new tank for our little guy.
A betta can survive in a smaller space for sure - but when owning any pet you don't aim for survival, you aim for providing a home they can thrive in. I think you made the right choice here. It's something I defiantly learned the hard way in this hobby. A larger tank and proper maintenance with create a thriving environment for your fish to be happy and healthy. I think people tend to forget, fish enjoy to swim. :) Thanks for the positive comments! You should share with the community your new set up and your pretty betta boy! :)
@@BearNecessitiesOfLife going to have mine as a loner in a 28 l tank. some snails and small shrimps. girl is goring to get one the same size, too. also, won't throw hin into my 300l tank. too many other fishs that will distrub and stress them. before you wonder: I will try and plant a sweet potatoe on top of his head, so the water stays clean more easily x'D
I have so many people come in at work going to buy a betta, not knowing they need a heater, filter, water condition and bacteria and a tank bigger than a small bowl. :(
Yeah I have had 2 Betta Fish in the past (one I got as a gift) and I feel kinda bad for them, I had them in bowls and they died in less than a year. This year I’m trying to get another Betta Fish in a 4 gallon tank and properly caring for it so it’s healthier. Too bad my parents don’t believe that they need more than a 1 gallon bowl
Babadook? More like BabaSHOOk Please don’t put fish in a tank less than 10 gallons,I’ve done that mistake before multiple times not knowing it was bad for them and the tank got very dirty real fast and I barely did water changes in the 2 years I had them!
Recently I found a pure white dumbo at a petco for $5 i know that pure white dumbos are rare and expensive he seemed super healthy so I got him and put him in a 10 gallon quarantine then I got him his own 10 gallon tank he is super happy and healthy this video helped me a bit with it
Im so inclined to just go to the pet stores and leave a sticky note near the bettas that says “guys get at least a 5 gal thats minimum size, also a heater bc they live in 76-80 degrees. oh and cycle the tank before getting them. and get a filter and lid they might jump out...also, LIVE PLANTS”
I never knew that either. Fortunalty where I live its 90s year round. Maybe a couple weeks of 40 but besides that i don't need a heater. Sometimes the tank has gotten to hot. I just added distilled ice cubes
Caroline Maslin Came to answer your question! I personally buy almond leaves off the PetSmart app. (I get treat rewards from my account) Or you can buy them at the store. I personally like ordering them or checking a store’s stock. You can also buy them from online fish breeders. And it’s usually 3-5$ for around 2-9 leaves. Just depends on what you find. Good luck!
@@froggie5624 maybe if you can afford intl shipping, i think here in indonesia there is a lot of merchant who sell them in 1kg pouch with intl shipping
I work at Petsmart and you won’t understand how annoying it is to make people understand that the beneficial bacteria is probably the most crucial piece of a tank. Any fish whatsoever, and so many people try to buy 1 gallons with plastic plants (which rips their fins) and bottled water no heater. And when I tell them everything they need, they get mad or get the fish anyways. It’s not cheap to keep but ya not going to break the bank. Do it right the first time and you never have to do it again. As for the test kits, Petsmart tests water for free so you don’t have to waste money on that unless you want to go the extra mile.
Akash Singh I am still young and I spent about $300 on my 20 gal tank and supplies. I did my research and talked to people from my local pet store, which is not a chair. And get recommendations for the best option at a reasonable price
Kaleid Stone You musta been saving your money!Should’ve done that too so my mom wouldn’t be paying for most of the stuff, but I’ve been paying for the more expensive stuff.Like the fish tanks and then actual fish.Probably should’ve also got the fish tank before I got my betta Astro.
Id recommend plants since people wont wait till their tank is cycled anyway.. i feel like anubias and java fern are pretty easy to grow. Bacteria are so fickle
I just bought my daughter a betta fish and 1.35 gal tank at Petko. The sales lady said 1.35 was plenty big and I didn't need a heater as they do fine in the cups they are in at room temp. She also said to always feed them the same food as it's all they know to eat. And to also just use distilled water from the store. This was an impulse buy with no research prior. I really wish I would have done some though because I think everything she told me is what I shouldn't be doing. Hoping I can bring our little buddy back cuz he ain't looking to great
Mattie P they should take him back, but i dont see him being treated any better in the store. Maybe you can find a local professional fish shop that gives each betta an actual tank or sell it to an experienced keeper instead?
Im getting my first betta in a few weeks. I've never had a fish before and I'm trying out a planted tank (I know it might not be the best idea for a really beginner like I am) I have been researching a lot. I'm going to get the supplies today and set it up with the plants and get a nice cycle going before actually putting the fish in. I will be getting him a 5-gallon Marineland LED aquarium. I'm super excited.
That's awesome! Welcome to the fish fam! Plants are a fantastic addition and I think you will find it easier to maintain a healthy ecosystem with them. I would look for low light plants and easy beginner plants like java fern, amazon swords and or anubias.
Bear Necessities that’s so funny i was just looking at beginner plants and i’ve decided on java fern and amazon sword. i was also going to do a light carpet of java moss but i think it will just over crowd the tank as it’s only 5 gallons. (i’m actually getting the stuff today, neither petsmart or walmart had the tank i’m looking for. i’m trying petco today:)
@@alle8047 its also not bad to try ordering in the live plants u want online too 😇 I've never done it yet myself. Also its not bad ur trying live plants as a beginner. I was very hesitant about trying it too for the first time but its better to research what u can and give it a shot and see if it works for u rather than not even trying at all. I've had a few plants that didnt look like they were doing too well so I removed them but I have an anubias and a java fern in a 5 gallon and they show no signs of dying. Other plant recommendations if you haven't looked into them yet btw... Java fern, Amazon sword, dwarf hairgrass, java moss, marimo moss ball, jungle val, moneywort, crypt species, anubias nana, anarchis, dwarf baby tears. A few may be a bit more difficult than the others but in general all these are or could be considered low-tech aquatic plants. I just listed them off u can look into each to see what is interesting and doable for you. I hope that helps!! 😇
Hannah Hart thank u! i got a 6.8 gallon tank and right now i have a java fern, two umbrella like things and some ludwigia. i only don’t remember what two of them are because i was set on getting an amazon sword but the store i went to didn’t have it and i had already went to two stores prior. i’ve only had this tank set up since monday and i don’t have any fish in it. i’m letting the whole thing do it’s cycle before adding anything more. i might order some plants online but i’m always hesitant with shipping. i will definitely use your suggestions for updating my tank or starting new ones in the future. hope your planted tanks work better!
Can wait to get my hands on the Fluval Flex 15 gal for my betta. I plan to get him a few other fish mates as well. I work at a pet store and he was a return and his fin rot is so bad I felt for him, took him home and now we're fighting to get rid of his fin rot. I never thought I'd love a fish this much @_@ hes so cute
I wish you the best of luck to get him back to health! I am sure you will be able to do it! I have been in the same situation and was able to bring a sickly betta who looked like he was on his last days and he is thriving. He changed colors drastically and his personality is precious. :)
I really love this video! Even though you geared towards Bettas it is good information for general fish keeping. Especially the nitrogen cycle the way you explained it and the way you explained all the water parameters and I love your fish!
My girlfriend wanted a betta really bad, always was talking about it, decided to get her one for Christmas. Luckily I did research prior, found out 5 gallons is essentially the lowest you can go (without a cannister filter) to get a good cycle going, and found out bettas like having space a lot more than is usually believed. So ended up with a 5 gallon planted tank, great heater (set at 80 degrees) extra filter media within the filter, and a couple buddies he gets along with pretty well. (A suckerfish and a small colony of amano shrimp) Now he's happy as hell, plenty of things to sate his curiosity, plenty of leaves to sleep on, a comfy cave carpeted in live moss. Just having a grand ol time. I just wish I had understood the need to cycle the tank prior to adding the fish a bit better, thought using a friends used filter pad would make it cycle instantly. Not quite the case and do not recommend.
I can’t say I’ve always taken proper care of my bettas as a kid but now I’m 22 and my male veiltale betta was the best $3.99 I ever spent! He’s adorable and so friendly. He’s in a 2.5 gallon, sponge filtered (fully cycled) and heated to 78 degrees, tank. He has a betta hammock which he loves to lay on and he also has really good aquarium salt and conditioner and several kinds of food. I won’t name all the hidey holes and decor because it’d take too long but he’s very spoiled :)
Uh until I found the betta subreddit, I never knew betta fish were not ok in those. My fave/only betta fish I ever had was fluffy bubbles the wonderfish. He lived 4.5 years and went through most of my highschool and part of college for me. Almost would always make a bubble nest too. Maybe it was my singing.
I’ve been cycling my 30 gallon planted tank for just under 3 weeks, but had 3 consecutively good tests for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. Have a small school of Harlequin Rasboras, 2 Siamese Algae Eaters (which have kind of stopped eating algae because they’re used to me spoiling them) and a Banjo Cat (that I set up the tank with sand specifically for) and just got my Crowntail today. It’s way more money than a fish bowl, but super satisfying knowing the fish will live a healthy happy life
I used your videos as a guide when setting up my betta tank. It’s been a couple days and the little guy already made a bubble nest so I think he’s happy. Thank you so much! Your videos are great and very helpful!!
Thanks so much! I am glad they helped you out! You should consider joining our discord channel and share pictures with the rest of the community of your tank and progress! :) discord.gg/DhdaAmm
I'm glad you geared towards Betta, because I just bought one a couple weeks ago. People out there really need to know that you don't just buy a betta and a bowl and off you go, because it does not work that way. I wish I had planned a lot better, but I was more focused on taking the betta home from Walmart and giving it a better life than that horrible little cup sitting on a shelf.
when i was 4 i really wanted a pet fish, so my parents drove me and my brother to our local fish store and we picked up a blue and red betta with three neon tetras and a bottom feeder (i don't remember the species, it might've been a cory cat). i named the betta Bluezy (i was 4, ok) and the tetras Tea Tree (named after my mom's shampoo lol), Teetra (again, i was a small child) and Pillow. i think we named the bottom feeder either Oscar or Edward. anyway we did the tank cycle beforehand and we had a bunch of fake plants (not made of plastic), some nice substrate and a natural stone castle where the fish could hide, as well as the filter and heater. our tank was a 10 gallon and we took good care of our fish despite me being only four years old xD. unfortunately one of the tetras was killed by the betta (one mistake we did make is not introducing the fish to each other properly, rip Pillow) and thaf was sad but Bluezy and the others lived a fulfilling maybe 2 or 3 years of life. i'm just so glad my parents did their research before buying me the fish, huge shoutout to other parents like mine :) edit: OK SO I CONVINCED MY DAD TO LET ME GET MORE FISH WHEN I TURN 13 NEXT YEAR OMGGG!! i think the reason why he's letting me get fish is because he had a lot of freshwater and saltwater fish when in high school. he told me he had a couple of oscars in an 80 gallon that he had to hide in his CLOSET! xDD anyway i wanna have a betta (idk which kind, either a spadefin, halfmoon, halfmoon plakat, or a rosetail), a school of six or seven tetras or rasboras (again, idk which kind yet), and a trio of cory cats or other bottom feeders, much like the previous tank i had when i was 4. i wanna have them in a 20 gallon long or a 30 gallon long cuz i want them to have as much room as possible :) i also wanna have live plants in this tank, i heard they're really beneficial to the water and the health of the fish so that's super cool. i'm so excited guys, i might do more updates in the future when i get them but i'm probably gonna end up completely forgetting about this comment lol! stay safe during the pandemic! love y'all
It's a wonderful world, isn't it? I'd call your local store ahead of time if you're looking for a specific tank size. Mine only had one ten gallon left (which they held for me, bless them) and I drove right down to get it. The sale had only been going on for, like, a week or so I think.
I know this comment is late, but I won and Betta at a fair a coupe days ago, luckily for me my older sister got a fish tank set that includes heater, thermometer, filter, water conditioner, pebbles and plastic plants for her birthday years ago, it’s 14 litre (3.7 gallons), Money is very tight in my home and my mum said she can buy food (probably just pallets) for the Betta but doesn’t want to buy anything else. So is those things enough? I don’t want him to have a bad life but I can’t really buy anything else for him
You have the base requirements, the big thing to note here is that since the tank is new and not cycled you will need to do a fish-in cycle. I would read up on that process. It's basically the same thing as a fish-less cycle but you will need to make sure you do frequent water changes. I would do at least a 10-20% on the daily for at least a month. Slowly you can work your way to maybe twice a week. But water changes is key here for your current situation. Other than that I think you will have just enough to give this guy a good home. :) if you have any other questions feel free to ask them here or join our discord server! There are a lot of friendly people there that can also help answer questions.
Bear Necessities thanks so much, I have him in the tank but I’ll start doing the water changes daily and do some research on the fish-in cycle, thanks again
I do recommend if you can’t take care of him and a friend you know wants a betta that you know takes good care of their pets then you let your friend have your betta or something.
It's funny I'm watching this about Betta fish when I have 2 already both in 20 gallons but still you are very knowledgeable and this is a great vid. p.s my red halfmoon Betta fish swam over to the corner of the 20 gallon and he says hi to everyone
ive had betta since i was 3 im 11 and i just learned what size to put my betta fish in well i guess its all part of being a goof fishkeeper and thanks for sharing next time i get one ill take note of this vid
I rember when I was little I had a cheap betta from walmart, changed water every other week, and fed every other day..... Nothing fancy.... Survived for 3 or 4 years!
I definitely should have watched more of these videos before getting a fish :,) my betta is still alive and kicking but I feel like I should definitely improve his living situation before things get worse
i had a ' ugg another betta fish implus buyer' from a petvalu employee I bought a fluval Flora 14.5 gal and live plants, cycling it now before I pick out a betta
Thank you so very much for your video - and to everyone for their thoughtful comments. I have had five female bettas in a 35 gallon tank heavily planted for two months and have already lost three. I was feeling terrible and thought it was something I had done wrong (though I could not figure out what, as I was so careful with everything). They did not fight or hurt each other, but I think they were just stressed with the constant chasing and hiding that went on in the very clear hierarchy that formed. Even the last two were stressed and I have just separated them - both very much happier and healthier looking in 24 hours. No more for me or lovely fish who deserve better!! Thanks again.
My Betta won't eat flakes, he likes the mini floating pellets along with blood worms , freeze dried Tubifex worms. He lives in a 10 gal tank with a Rainbow albino shark and 2 albino Cory cats. Your video is really great, that will help people who are still learning about Betta's.
I LOVE your channel!! I have a betta fish and love learning everything I can to keep him healthy! I will definitely be adding more live plants to my tank soon because your tank just looks so peaceful and it seems like your fish love it. Thanks for being soo inspiring!
9$ - Betta 10$ - A few decorations 7$ - 2 decor pieces 18$ - 10 gallon/5 gallon tank 5$ - Substrate at dollar store 7$ - water conditioner 3$ - Food 7$/14$ - heater For 5 gallon tank or 10 gallon tank Total - 61$/68$ Optional - 6$ - aquarium Salt 6$ - Bloodworms Needed + optional = 73$/80$ Sorry if my math is wrong, I'm not the best plus I did it in my head And is that everything you need?
Not a bad list at all! That looks good to me. I'd consider maybe doing some kind of live plants rather then plastic decorations as they increase chances of injury more often than not.
wow, where do you live where everything is so inexpensive? when I bought a heater, frozen bloodworms, and a bit of filter media for my boy a while ago, it ran me over sixty dollars;;
Awesome video. I have learned to get a ten gallon tank for a Betta fish, no smaller, having that volume makes Everything more stable with water changes. Do as shown in this video, heater, etc. I use a bubbler as well as a hang on the back filter that is turned Down to a low setting so that it does not create a lot of water turbulence that the Betta fish will not feel comfortable with. This is a top notch video, I believe you are helping people AND the innocent Betta fish out there in the world. Good Job !!!
I'm considering getting a betta fish and I've been reading a lot of articles about taking care of them, but none were too specific. This was very useful, thank you!!
Months before I got my fish I was looking at a lot of different fish videos online and I kind of became obsessed with bettas and learned a lot. One day my mom needed to go to petsmart for something (I honestly forgot what) and I saw some really beautiful betta fish. My mom noticed how interested I was and encouraged me a bit to buy one. So I impulsively bought one and put him in a vase with bottled water temporarily for roughly a week (it was a 1 gallon vase which is pretty sad actually) and then went hunting for a tank. I bought flakes, small pellets, and freeze dried bloodworm so he could have a variety. I also grabbed some tetra aquasafe, easy balance, and safestart conditioners. I found a pretty decent 5 gallon tank that came with a filter and a small led light. Bought a preset submersible 50 watt heater for a 2 to 15 gallon tank that maintains the temperature at 78 and a got thermometer. I bought the 5 in 1 easy strips and an amonia test kit. So far the tank is a bit bland and empty I do have 2 plant's, a small bamboo sprout with a little devil's ivy vine, in the corner for the little guy to hide in. I also have a 10 gallon tank but that one's preoccupied at the moment with a mouse. I was originally going to wait until the mouse passed away and save up money to use it for an aquarium but that plan quickly crumbled when I saw a really beautiful betta fish swimming in a disposable cup at a petsmart. He has a lot of swimming room in the tank, I'll definitely get more decor later and get some plants.
Great production. I appreciate the intro. Extra love the fish cam en lieu of watching you talk. Also, calmed my apprehension over starting a tank. Thank you.
I found a really cool dumbo betta and he is kinda huge compared to other bettas I had. I put him in a 10 gallon tank with 3 ottos and a lot of real plants. He quickly started building a bubble nest! So I know he’s happy 🤩! I had diluted almond leaves in my tank when I introduced him to fix his curing fins that he had in while in a cup. His fins seem to be healing little By little 👍🏽
When I fist got a betta ofcourse I didnt know much. I did the horrible thing and put him in a vase until I read more and put him into a 10 gallond tank after about a year. He always looked lke he couldn't swim right and was bent sideways all the time. He is slowly being rehabilitated and swims more easily. So its true. Do your betta a favor and give him the space he needs. Thanks for sharing and getting the word out!🙂
Thanks for these videos. A year ago, my first betta, Bluey, died from sickness, and I was very sad about it. Now, I’ve been wanting to try again (maybe with a snail friend for company). Wish me luck!
I just got a betta fish two days ago, I have a gallon glass fish bowl with three small fake plants, gravel, thermometor, flake food, and a water solution for betta fish. I want to take extra care of him and give him the best care, so I am super happy to have found your video. It is my first betta fish so I want to make sure to keep him safe
I absolutely love this video! Currently working on saving a Beta from a pretty bad situation so I’m doing a bunch of research & this was SUPER informative/helpful!
Thanks so much for your kind words! I am glad this was able to help you. Best of luck for you and your betta! Let me know how it turns out or if you have any questions!
I’ve made some of the most common mistakes in my years of starting the fish hobby.A small tank too many fish in a tank less than 10 gallons. Not changing the water daily, etc.I have changed my ways though don’t worry!
I’m getting a 15 gal for Christmas which I will plant fir a Betta. They live in streams fir crying out loud with lots of room...something even the hybrid fish need.
I just bought my first betta is forever. I'm really good with my goldfish but I needed to save a sickly looking betta! I just got a .5 gal tank, gravel, and a decoration for now. I new goldfish needed a filtration system, I didn't know that betta needed them too! I'll have to keep a lookout for a small filter, for now, then when I can get a larget tank a larger filter. I also don't like my fishes being alone (hello I have 7 goldfish and a sucker fish) so I'll have to get some tank mates sometime too! I'm so excited! I named him Sunbeam. ^^
Tank mates for bettas are something you will just need to keep an eye on, some do well, most do not. They're very territorial so I would just be cautious. I large enough tank with a lot of decorations/plants/places to hide would be ideal. Low flow, strong filtration, heater. That's all you will need to be successful with a betta. I would for sure consider something at min, 5 gallons or more.
If you want to add other fish with a betta you will need at least a 10 gallon tank. Also keep in mind that 7 adult goldfish will need a tank at least 70 gallons as a bare minimum.
Thanks! hahah I recently redid the intro and took the gaming vids off as they didn't do all that well - but I am working with a friend to start back up a gaming channel we have had going for a few years. ruclips.net/user/TheByronyk I haven't had time to work on it much but let me know what you think! :)
How often do you recommend doing water changes? I take out 50% of my 5 gallon tank's water out every 4 weeks. My betta come's up to the tank when i come in too!
bought a female betta koi. very under prepared but seeing alot of videos im going to make sure she's the happiest koi in a decent tank (getting a 10 gal) and considering putting community fish as well. get everything folks heater/filters/water treatment.
I feed my Betta once a day.. coz before this I used to feed them twice a day..and end up died due to overfeeding ...so after that incident.. I feed my new Betta once a day..sometimes I feed them live blood worm..easy to find when you live in Asia...
I had a buddy keep his betta in a plastic container that was probably half a gallon and and had a small amount of sand and one fake plant in it. He didnt use a filter and used normal tap water and performed water changes like once every week. Somehow his betta lived for a lil over 4 years
Great video! Glad you cleared up that it's ok to put a bit extra Prime in. The little cap is hard to gauge and sometimes I've felt like I put a bit more than I meant to. That stuff stinks but I really works well!
Thanks I have checked out a few videos today about beta fish. Yours is the first one I could actually watch. Also the pet store that I bought my beta fish from yesterday. Said that I did not need a heater or anything for the fish because they live in puddles. I’ve learned so much more In the last 15 hours since I purchased my fish. I have a filter and a heater, Some greenery and a log for the fish to hide in. I do have to get a larger tank though. Mine is only a 1 gallon and I’ve learned that they need more. Also I was told I cannot have my fish with other fish. I have a 30 gallon tank with Molly’s, guppies, Cory catfish and Raphael catfish. Can I put my Betta fish in with them? Thanks for all the info :-)
I do not have any videos on how to clean them - I would check out Creative Pet Keeping, Simply Betta or Rachel O'Leary. All great youtubers that have a lot of content on cleaning and tank care that go way more in depth than I do! I am super happy to hear this video helped you though! I will eventually do an update video on this and provide more details and things I have learned since then but it's been hard to find time. :) Thanks for reaching out and good luck to you and your betta! :)
I live in a tropical nation (Philippines to be exact) do I need a heater??? If I don't need it I don't want to buy it because its troublesome to get something here in my country (really hard af)
Yes, Petco has $1 per gallon that comes with nothing, but you can also buy 5 gallon kits at Petsmart and Walmart with all you need $20-25. Walmart even has a 10 gallon kit less than $30. Walmart even has cheap heaters (if doesn't heat, easy to return). I don't recommend buying Tetra brand food, turns water rancid.
Thanks so much! Good luck! I would love to see your tanks sometime! If you ever need any advice feel free to join the discord chat server we have going for the fish community! discord.gg/Zf68Pcv
thank you for this video, I had a couple of betta fish before and never understood why I would loose them :( Now, I am way more prepare for my next little friend that I'm considering buying soon.
My betta was a fish i had got at a 99 cent store in a cup. He went straight to a 10 gal tank in my office at work. Now i had to take him home and hes in a large fish bowl with no filter and no heater. I did put an almond leaf in there..water conditioner when changing the water. It has been 3 weeks now being in the fish bowl. Im searching for a 5 gal tank and all the necessities for it because i want him to be happy.
does anyone know where the best place would be to get some low light freshwater plants? I have a 10 gallon tank ready for a fish but I can't seem to find any plants anywhere.
My brother had a Betta when we were kids that lived in a tiny little bowl for FOUR YEARS. Looking back now I'm genuinely blown away at how that little guy survived for so long in what was basically an empty cup. No heater, filter, rocks, plants, or anything. Poor thing 😨🥺
Thank you so much for making this video! It was so helpful for me to put in a list so that when I save up enough money I’ll be able to get all the supplies and set up the tank
great video!! It has such a professional feel that is super enjoyable to watch. Thank you for sharing your opinion on how to care for bettas- as far as I can tell everything is super accurate and will surely help any new fishkeepers =)
I have no idea how he has lived, but my friend has a male veil tale that is 5 years old. For its whole life, it has lived in an un heated and un filtered bowl. Literally it's a bare bowl with like ten blue marbles in it.
I have a 1 gallon tank with a heater, filter and lights and also a mystery snail (hope he doesn’t get to big too soon!) my Betta moves around a lot too, but there are brown spots on the side of my tank, I think it’s algae, but I’m not sure
I just bought my daughter her first betta. I went to a specialty aquarium store, and was told that the 2 gallon fish bowl that I picked out was too large. I am glad you care abut him a 5 gallon and he will be super happy :)
a bigger tank is almost always better for any type of fish, it's also lower maintenence usually - less frequent water changes are needed.

I have so many people come in at work going to buy a betta, not knowing they need a heater, filter, water condition and bacteria and a tank bigger than a small bowl. :(
Hopefully with enough effort, we can all get the information out there that proper pet care is a must! Fish are friends and have needs!

Recently I found a pure white dumbo at a petco for $5 i know that pure white dumbos are rare and expensive he seemed super healthy so I got him and put him in a 10 gallon quarantine then I got him his own 10 gallon tank he is super happy and healthy this video helped me a bit with it
Yay that is awesome to hear! I would love to see a picture of him! :)
I see pure white dumbos a lot but it may be a locality thing in my area
I thought I got the same thing but when I changed the beta from the cup he started to have a red marbling pattern
Kaitlon DO IT
People need to know 😤
Kaitlon Very true. I bought a Betta and it died because of wrong information.😭
I never knew that either. Fortunalty where I live its 90s year round. Maybe a couple weeks of 40 but besides that i don't need a heater. Sometimes the tank has gotten to hot. I just added distilled ice cubes
Also, add in a few dry almond leaves, releases a LOT of good stuff for bettas and other tropical fish.
Where do I find almond leaves ?
Caroline Maslin Came to answer your question! I personally buy almond leaves off the PetSmart app. (I get treat rewards from my account) Or you can buy them at the store. I personally like ordering them or checking a store’s stock. You can also buy them from online fish breeders. And it’s usually 3-5$ for around 2-9 leaves. Just depends on what you find. Good luck!
Lily Mooney what do you look for them as in PetSmart app .. I don’t find any
@@corpsemink8621, is there anywhere else by petsmart? There isn’t any petsmart around where I live.
Anyone else been taking care of bettas for a while and just like watching these for fun
This is a real high quality video/editing and informational video. Really like this, nice job! All the animals look healthy and happy.
MX_MOON omg I love EXO

@@alle8047 how did it go?
This is awesome, youtube should promote channels with actual good information like this one. Also you get achievements... what's not to like
My thoughts exactly! :)
Is he okay now?
I really love this video! Even though you geared towards Bettas it is good information for general fish keeping. Especially the nitrogen cycle the way you explained it and the way you explained all the water parameters and I love your fish!
3:03 “you’re gonna wonder why everything you touch dies” LMAO😂😂
My girlfriend wanted a betta really bad, always was talking about it, decided to get her one for Christmas. Luckily I did research prior, found out 5 gallons is essentially the lowest you can go (without a cannister filter) to get a good cycle going, and found out bettas like having space a lot more than is usually believed.
So ended up with a 5 gallon planted tank, great heater (set at 80 degrees) extra filter media within the filter, and a couple buddies he gets along with pretty well. (A suckerfish and a small colony of amano shrimp)
Now he's happy as hell, plenty of things to sate his curiosity, plenty of leaves to sleep on, a comfy cave carpeted in live moss. Just having a grand ol time.
I just wish I had understood the need to cycle the tank prior to adding the fish a bit better, thought using a friends used filter pad would make it cycle instantly. Not quite the case and do not recommend.
welp cycle the tank? Can you explain this to me please? I’m looking to get a betta I want as much information as possible
Sir Sly I believe that means when you put the bacterial liquid in you have to wait about a week so it can spread before putting your betta in
I can’t say I’ve always taken proper care of my bettas as a kid but now I’m 22 and my male veiltale betta was the best $3.99 I ever spent!
Chronically Witty bubble nest doesn’t mean there happy
Bubble nest are just a natural thing that they do
I’ve been cycling my 30 gallon planted tank for just under 3 weeks, but had 3 consecutively good tests for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. Have a small school of Harlequin Rasboras, 2 Siamese Algae Eaters (which have kind of stopped eating algae because they’re used to me spoiling them) and a Banjo Cat (that I set up the tank with sand specifically for) and just got my Crowntail today. It’s way more money than a fish bowl, but super satisfying knowing the fish will live a healthy happy life
Loving your videos! I'm trying to research as much as I can before I get my first Betta and I'm finding them super helpful. Thank you!
I am so glad you have found this useful! Thank you! If you have any questions feel free to ask and I can try to cover it in a future video!. :)
Awesome! Thank you 😊
did you get your Betta yet? :o

It took Astro maybe a week or two to make a bubble nest.Probably because at the beginning he had a tank less than a gallon
I'm glad you geared towards Betta, because I just bought one a couple weeks ago. People out there really need to know that you don't just buy a betta and a bowl and off you go, because it does not work that way. I wish I had planned a lot better, but I was more focused on taking the betta home from Walmart and giving it a better life than that horrible little cup sitting on a shelf.
when i was 4 i really wanted a pet fish, so my parents drove me and my brother to our local fish store and we picked up a blue and red betta with three neon tetras and a bottom feeder (i don't remember the species, it might've been a cory cat). i named the betta Bluezy (i was 4, ok) and the tetras Tea Tree (named after my mom's shampoo lol), Teetra (again, i was a small child) and Pillow. i think we named the bottom feeder either Oscar or Edward. anyway we did the tank cycle beforehand and we had a bunch of fake plants (not made of plastic), some nice substrate and a natural stone castle where the fish could hide, as well as the filter and heater. our tank was a 10 gallon and we took good care of our fish despite me being only four years old xD. unfortunately one of the tetras was killed by the betta (one mistake we did make is not introducing the fish to each other properly, rip Pillow) and thaf was sad but Bluezy and the others lived a fulfilling maybe 2 or 3 years of life. i'm just so glad my parents did their research before buying me the fish, huge shoutout to other parents like mine :)
edit: OK SO I CONVINCED MY DAD TO LET ME GET MORE FISH WHEN I TURN 13 NEXT YEAR OMGGG!! i think the reason why he's letting me get fish is because he had a lot of freshwater and saltwater fish when in high school. he told me he had a couple of oscars in an 80 gallon that he had to hide in his CLOSET! xDD anyway i wanna have a betta (idk which kind, either a spadefin, halfmoon, halfmoon plakat, or a rosetail), a school of six or seven tetras or rasboras (again, idk which kind yet), and a trio of cory cats or other bottom feeders, much like the previous tank i had when i was 4. i wanna have them in a 20 gallon long or a 30 gallon long cuz i want them to have as much room as possible :) i also wanna have live plants in this tank, i heard they're really beneficial to the water and the health of the fish so that's super cool. i'm so excited guys, i might do more updates in the future when i get them but i'm probably gonna end up completely forgetting about this comment lol! stay safe during the pandemic! love y'all
PETCO HAS IT DOLLOAR PER GALLON SALE?
Yup! It's going on till the 29th of May I believe!
OMG
It's a wonderful world, isn't it? I'd call your local store ahead of time if you're looking for a specific tank size. Mine only had one ten gallon left (which they held for me, bless them) and I drove right down to get it. The sale had only been going on for, like, a week or so I think.
Bear Necessities is it going on for Petsmart?
I'm not sure if Petsmart does one. There are forums you can look into it though, or you can call your local Petsmart and ask.
Love your channel. :) Could I just recommend getting a filter with lower flow, because he looks like he's struggling. Keep up the good work. ♡
I used to keep puffer fish and I recently bought my first Betta and this video was really insightful and helpful thank you
I know this comment is late, but I won and Betta at a fair a coupe days ago, luckily for me my older sister got a fish tank set that includes heater, thermometer, filter, water conditioner, pebbles and plastic plants for her birthday years ago, it’s 14 litre (3.7 gallons), Money is very tight in my home and my mum said she can buy food (probably just pallets) for the Betta but doesn’t want to buy anything else.
Bear Necessities Hi Bear Necessities! Your videos are so beautiful and well made. I would love to join your discord.
Hi, I'm Jess plastic plants are terrible for bettas as it tears there fins do ur research before playing a stupid game at a fair broke ass
EXCELLENT video!! I've kept Bettas for a year now and still learned new info.
I definitely should have watched more of these videos before getting a fish :,) my betta is still alive and kicking but I feel like I should definitely improve his living situation before things get worse
i had a ' ugg another betta fish implus buyer' from a petvalu employee
I bought a fluval Flora 14.5 gal and live plants, cycling it now before I pick out a betta
just came across your channel, i love it :)
by the way, your bettas are beautiful and your tanks look great
Hey there! Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. :) I am glad you like my content!
how did those betta do in the long term with the angel?
I would like to know too
Me too
If your tank is big enough it’ll be fine
I could listen to Joakim Karud and watch Betta fish swim around all day long. That's kind of why I wanna get one. Music and fishes.
Wow not even a minute into the video and I see betta and league of legends. You earned yourself a sub
9$ - Betta
10$ - A few decorations
7$ - 2 decor pieces
18$ - 10 gallon/5 gallon tank
5$ - Substrate at dollar store
7$ - water conditioner
3$ - Food
7$/14$ - heater For 5 gallon tank or 10 gallon tank
Total - 61$/68$
Optional -
6$ - aquarium Salt
6$ - Bloodworms
Needed + optional = 73$/80$
Sorry if my math is wrong, I'm not the best plus I did it in my head
And is that everything you need?
Not a bad list at all! That looks good to me. I'd consider maybe doing some kind of live plants rather then plastic decorations as they increase chances of injury more often than not.
wow, where do you live where everything is so inexpensive? when I bought a heater, frozen bloodworms, and a bit of filter media for my boy a while ago, it ran me over sixty dollars;;
How the heck are you keeping multiple betta fish and an angelfish in the same tank? Magic. Also those plants look amazing.
Why don't you have more subscribers you editing skills and intro are awesome!
Thanks so much! :) It's slowly growing! 2k and going strong!
Could be because many newbies don’t think to google important facts about their Betta/fish/pet!?
I am so glad I googled and found your awesome videos Bear Necessities
He has a lot of swimming room in the tank, I'll definitely get more decor later and get some plants.
what's that small clover-ish looking plant you have in your tank? It looks really pretty

Great production. I appreciate the intro. Extra love the fish cam en lieu of watching you talk. Also, calmed my apprehension over starting a tank. Thank you.
I had a betta a couple years back and I’m thinking of getting another this year. Needed a refresher! Thanks a bunch :)
His fins seem to be healing little
By little 👍🏽
Omg, your clear, precise, and detailed. Awesome! I'm subbing
Thank you so much for sharing your tank and taking the time to explain/teach us :-)
You are very welcome! I am glad you like the video!
Thanks for sharing and getting the word out!🙂
This channel is so underated. 😢
I got my Betta a 7 + gallon tank =)
That is awesome Moosie!
Not changing the water daily, etc.I have changed my ways though don’t worry!
you live in Kansas that's awesome!!! I like Wichitas selection of Petstores! Anyways this is a great video! I learned alot! thankyou!
I am glad you liked the video! Also yay another Kansasian! :)
I am definitely going to make a video similar to this on my channel I think it’s good for people to now what there getting into
I’m getting a 15 gal for Christmas which I will plant fir a Betta.
League of legends and fish? The best of both worlds. Good channel!
Thanks! hahah I recently redid the intro and took the gaming vids off as they didn't do all that well - but I am working with a friend to start back up a gaming channel we have had going for a few years. ruclips.net/user/TheByronyk I haven't had time to work on it much but let me know what you think! :)
It's so glorious to hear a RUclipsr say they're from Kansas!!!
KC has treated me well! :)
How often do you recommend doing water changes? I take out 50% of my 5 gallon tank's water out every 4 weeks. My betta come's up to the tank when i come in too!
Dæmon Græyson that is so true
I wish I still lived in Kansas (especially because of the easier winters) instead of Boston.
SUNFLOWEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRR 😭😍😭
bought a female betta koi. very under prepared but seeing alot of videos im going to make sure she's the happiest koi in a decent tank (getting a 10 gal) and considering putting community fish as well. get everything folks heater/filters/water treatment.
I’m planning on getting a Betta fish, this was super helpful! Also, hello fellow Kansan!
I like your video editing, sir.......... and your betta tank setups are pretty damn awesome too.
Thank you so much!
I know!!My fish tank only has 3 plants,gravel,and a filter!
Somehow his betta lived for a lil over 4 years
You're tanks don't have lids! It's stressing me out D:
Awesome video! Great advice :D
Thank you so much Kasia! I am glad you liked it!
Betta care is sooooo important
Great video! Glad you cleared up that it's ok to put a bit extra Prime in. The little cap is hard to gauge and sometimes I've felt like I put a bit more than I meant to. That stuff stinks but I really works well!
I have a betta fish named Cleo and we are both loving your channel! Thanks a lot ❤️
I am so glad! :) Thank you!
I love your videos, I'm getting ready to get my first betta fish and your videos are helping me alot. thank you! Your fish are really pretty.
Thank you so much Haylee! I am glad they are helping you! I would love to see your first tank/fish!
I really like this video! Thank you. May I recommend it to friends and customers? It would be so very helpful.
Hi Patti! Yeah for sure feel free to share it with anyone and everyone! :) I am honored and happy you think it's so good! Thanks!!
It's great, and kinda makes you wanna watch the next one too. lol
I am so glad to hear that! I am working on filming and editing it now actually. I should have it out sometime this week. :)
Excellent video. Subjected to power outages..not subjugated.
I am 8 years old and I love your explanation. I love you
Thank you for this video. I'm trying to start two community tanks and I needed these tips. Subbed!
And btw, your bettas are gorgeous!
Thanks so much! Good luck! I would love to see your tanks sometime! If you ever need any advice feel free to join the discord chat server we have going for the fish community! discord.gg/Zf68Pcv
I’m at 15 seconds in and I’m already loving this simply because of the music.
You know nothing of cold I live in Minnesota over six months of the year we had snow
Love the intro. Bear Nessecities is one of my favorite songs
thank you for this video, I had a couple of betta fish before and never understood why I would loose them :( Now, I am way more prepare for my next little friend that I'm considering buying soon.
Awesome tank setup, beautiful fish, informative video. What more could you want
I love your videos, I also love the chill music you add! Keep it up! All your fish look fantastic.
Thanks so much Kukie Bun! :)

Hoping to get another betta soon, haven't had one in a few years, so a good refresher in betta care! :)
Love this video!!!! Just got a beta and a tank and this is soooo helpful! I’ve looked around for part two and three but can’t find them anywhere!
Thank you so much Aquahawk! That means a great deal to me. :)
I love your channel and the betta videos there aren't enough betta fish videos lots of tropical fish but not a lot of betta specific
Thanks so much! :) I got more coming in the near future.
I have no idea how he has lived, but my friend has a male veil tale that is 5 years old. For its whole life, it has lived in an un heated and un filtered bowl. Literally it's a bare bowl with like ten blue marbles in it.
Bettas have been known to survive in some pretty terrible conditions. But surviving is not thriving, as they all say.
Great video! I just did a beta care video too and I tried to explain everything in simple terms! Beautiful fish by the way!♥️
You just got a new sub!
Your betta fish are sooooo!!!!
Bootiful!!
you have 2 bettas in the same tank. i thought they needed to be seperated? thant blue one with the red fins? absolutely gorgeous!
I have a 1 gallon tank with a heater, filter and lights and also a mystery snail (hope he doesn’t get to big too soon!) my Betta moves around a lot too, but there are brown spots on the side of my tank, I think it’s algae, but I’m not sure
HA THX my sister also think they only need a small tank but I tought its so small why I mean in the nature they have also more space and other fishes
