I cannot tell you how much I love how the Japanese incorporate the outside into their homes and live with nature, instead of choppping it all down like they do here in the UK to make god damn awful estates

japanese had style before anyone else knew what style was! One advantage of having the passageways on the periphery of the house is that they act as insulation for the rooms which are then easier to heat in the wintertime. One thing I'd like to see is what kind of storage they have for dishes, linens clothing, books etc. I like the bare room look but how about convenience? Surely there's a system.
There are scarcely any in Japanese culture. They sleep in Futons which are stored during the day.....the only things that exist are low tables for tea, meals, and lamps, which are also able to be stored. The philosophy is to have an empty space, which reflects Zen Buddhism's meditative take on emptiness, as well as the practicality of using the space to do anything. As such, a house is highly flexible and often reconfigured easily to fit whatever need.
Why can’t you appreciate both cultures without putting down one of them? Both countries are beautiful in their own right. There’s pros and cons on both sides smh.

As I watched, I noticed there were fire hydrants all over the place and thought they must be very paranoid about fire. And then at the end, you mentioned the fire proof room they keep their valuables in.
It's so beautiful. I've always wanted to move to Japan, but I've always had my doubts because I like traditional Japan better than the contemporary one. I guess a place like that would be wonderful if you feel like me :S
i love the sound of the cicada's. don't have them in england. also, this such a beautiful house. i definetly wantto visit a traditional japanese house someday.
Japanese homes do not have central heating because it as seen as expensive and wasteful in Japanese culture. Rooms are heated individually through the use of heating appliances such as kotatsu tables. In truly traditional homes, some of the rooms would have pits where fires could be safely lit and food could be cooked, but these are no longer used for obvious safety reasons. This house likely isn't heated except for the staff area, since no one is living in it.
Interesting to hear mention, in the blurb, that the house survived the sad bombing, of the Second World War. My experience of Tokyo, before the Second World War, was that most of the city was covered in wooden houses of two stories. We live in a craftsman house so true very much like the Japanese house. Oriental decor looks great in a craftsman too.
I still love the craftsman architecture.. maybe it's 'missing' something, but it beats cookie cutter crap by a country mile
I believe those outer hallways are called "Engawa" (縁側 (I hope that's the right Kanji lol))
