- Amnesty International suspended human rights work in India after an Indian government investigative arm froze the organization's bank accounts, according to a statement released Tuesday.
"This is an egregious and shameful act by the Indian government, which forces us to cease the crucial human rights work of Amnesty International India for now," Julie Verhaar, the acting secretary-general of Amnesty, said in a statement, adding that the organization was working "resolutely" to determine how it can continue human rights work in India.
The government of India froze Amnesty International India's bank accounts on September 10, which Amnesty said forced it to let go of staff and "pause its ongoing campaign and research work." Amnesty said the Indian government was unduly portraying the group's fundraising as "money laundering" under a law regulating foreign donations.
According to Amnesty, around 100,000 Indians have supported the group financially over the past 8 years. Amnesty also slammed Indian authorities for carrying out what he called "legal harassment."
Amnesty has accused the Indian government of carrying out a "witch hunt of human rights organizations" in response to rights watchdogs challenging the "government's grave excesses."
India's ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been accused of pushing a Hindu-first agenda that marginalizes the country's Muslim minority and violates human rights principles.

Dear DW viewers, amnesty international has violated foreign exchange regulatory act for a long time in India. Not just that, it sides with terrorists and individuals circumventing the laws repeatedly. It's also involved in money laundering. The government has just taken an action that any regulatory authority in any country would do in their borders. The real question is why did amnesty fold up based on this event? It's generally done when someone feels that their game is up. Think about it

A very organized way has been achieved under present government. Amnesty has been used to spineless governance before. Prof Ashok Sewen highlights this point very well. Small contributions from Indian donations are still allowed but they cant fund anti-India activities so Amnesty finds itself toothless. Loosing an image if we protect our sovereignty is alright with any democracy.

It's an open secret in India that Amnesty International has a huge selection bias as if they are paid to be so selective and ignore the plight of one community over another!

This organization has a well-documented history of colluding with Islamists - In August 2015, The Times reported that Yasmin Hussein, then Amnesty's director of faith and human rights and previously its head of international advocacy and a prominent representative at the United Nations, had "undeclared private links to men alleged to be key players in a secretive network of global Islamists"!!
This is only one side of coin.
