Very brave of you. Thanks for making yourself vulnerable so we can participate in your journey. Nothing is as humbling or instructive as review. Looking forward to what comes next.
One of your superpowers is that you are very comfortable with introspection and sharing your introspection journey. And you don't mind laughing at yourself. Great content, great perspectives. I can't wait to see where all this experimentation takes you.
Thanks a ton for your humility. You are a lot of fun in this retrospective video. I've been grinding away for just over six years too and keep trying to get better, waiting for my big break... My oldest videos are absolutely terrible.
I only know your channel for a few months now but I can tell you that imo you're the best Camera gear review channel on youtube. I get so much information that I don't get from most other channels like about rollingshutter, overheating etc, so big thanks for your works and keep it up :)
Haha I love that you brought back the funky jams. I'm really happy for you that you have had such a long and successful journey. RUclips is a tough place, but you have weathered the storm very well. I always enjoy what you put into the world, and your silliness is a unique part of you. Don't ever look back and cringe. It's why people like you after all! Happy six years!
I only recently found your channel. I have to say, regardless of where you started, your recent videos are simply superb. From production quality to humor, these videos earn every damned minute of watch time.
Thank you Gerald! I suffered when I started RUclips a few years ago and STILL have to fight myself trying to make videos. The daft thing is that I’m a retired musician who was perfectly happy recording in studios and playing to live audiences, but speaking to a camera just shuts me down! Great to see where you started.
That was so funny ! I laughed out loud. Also a lover of the intro. Your warmth and sense of humour , not to mention your thorough reviews are what keep me coming back time and again.
I don’t why I never watched this when it came up on my subs feed! Brilliant. So good to see the journey. I’ve been here since early 2020. You’ve taught me so much. And I’ve laughed a lot too. And for that I’m eternally grateful.
Haha, most of those growth things you talk about are so relatable. I am in shouting phase RN haha. Keep doing what you're doing, one of the best camera channels out here on YT.
YOu're deep dives and tech videos are always top notch, but I always come back for the fireside chats and weird funny videos you occasionally post. Grateful that you shared your journey with us. Here's to the future!
Don’t be too hard on your past self, he got you where you are now and that’s incredible! This was fascinating though, really made me think as introspectively as you were about how we will perceive our current work in the future. Really great stuff Gerald!
It is INCREDIBLE how far you have come in these last few years. Content, lighting, sound, editing, hair, teeth, totally awesome progress and improvement.
Haha. Love the memes! I’ve been on your channel for I think 3-4 years now. And never bothered to watch your super old content. I came in due to needing to learn more about log profiles, specifically s-log2, and working with 8-bit footage. One of the first videos of yours I remember watching was a comparison of all the Sony profiles, showing all the data, matching them, etc. Amazing how much you’ve evolved in such a short time. Most never make it out of the awkward phase. But you figured out what you love to make, made your content unique in that space, and became successful. What a ride! There’s a lot of simple stuff I can learn from you even though our content will be totally dissimilar. 1) Think about what you want to make. 2) Challenge yourself. 3) Use a script. 4) watch your edits (and although you didn’t say this: reshoot something if it’s awkward).
Man, I loved this. I wish every successful RUclipsr would go through their old videos and talk about what worked and what didn't. It was entertaining and insightful, brotha! Thanks for making this 🙏🏼
As much as I like your technical analysis and review videos, I think I can speak for many that we like this type of video that's on the other side of the spectrum. Kudos!
despite all jokes about the old videos, there is a lot of really valuable information here. After all these years of experience in YT consider doing more videos like these... talking about "how to RUclips" (create more pleasant camera shots/B-Roll, tricks to retain an audience, your steps to record a video, gain camera confidence, and others) I know your channel is more "gear's related", but in some of your and also Josh's videos, you guys provided more insights to people who want to become RUclipsrs than real channels that only create that kind of content, so consider approaching these subjects as well bro.

Congrats for the first 6 years, I’ve been following you for the best part of 4 and don’t plan to stop anytime soon 😉 keep up the great work
I jumped on the Undone boat when I watched one of the recent (within the last year) camera reviews. I don't care about cameras not even in the slightest, but it was something about the way the video was produced and the extent of the details in the review was almost calming. Since then it's been great watching Gerald's videos. They are quite informational for the most part (bananus included) but they are entertaining too.
Great retrospective! Congrats on the 6+ years. I'm indirectly feeling bad about Gerald's roasting of himself, but it's because my current stuff has a ton of flaws and I see it after every project. And my old stuff is... well... a lot worse, lol.
Gerald, the one saying that this reminds me of is "it is not the end of the journey that is so important, but it is the adventure of getting there". You have done well my friend (even though we have not met, I have been a loyal watcher for several years), You have brought an ease of understanding to some very complicated processes in cameras and video and had some really decent fun with other RUclips content providers. Keep up the good works.
This channel has helped me so much throughout my career in video. Whether it's a new purchase, or a how do i do that... you've given a ton of answers. Thank you.
Man, it is brutal going back and watching my original 10 videos. I can't believe how much we learn over such short periods of time. Congrats on 6 years bro
I haven't watched all of your videos, but I've definitely watched a few of them 3-4 times. I think that time period of "energy" that is so rampant in RUclips content is thanks to another Canadian RUclipsr who it seems everyone copied from set design and lighting, to travelling to Iceland! to the catch phrase, "What! Is! HAPPENING!!!!!". Thankfully, that trend is dying down, as more and more people are finding their own style. I appreciate what you've accomplished and I loved the studio tours as I also followed all of those people, so it was a fun series of cross-over episodes. Keep at it! You're great!
This is awesome. I love to see old videos from people with high production value now, as it shows everyone starts at the same place. Bad lighting, bad editing, and uncomfortableness in unpolished videos. 6 years seems like a long time, but it's really not. Public speaking skills, lighting, comfort all gets added with practice. Love it.
A great self-critical view back in time - if one can laugh about the early mistakes like you do, the journey must be a good one. Really looking forward to what you will do over the next 5-10 years, and thanks for all your valuable content you have created, Gerald! - Martin
Ever since I discovered your channel you've been my main go to for reference, troubleshooting and basically learning the craft, thanks for all the hard work.
That spot removal video was the one that brought me to the channel. I wanted to remove the same stuff from my laptop monitor. I ended up selling it. Jump cuts were also fine. Everyone was using them. And it is better than not having some awkward pause. It is also understandable you talk, and you may just run with the script or with the idea. So, it wasn't that bad. Man, it's one of the best videos here on the channel. Keep working on your content. There was a lot of cool stuff that helped me.
These are honestly some of my favorite videos on YT. Watching creators who have it all together take a look back at where they started and having a good self-roasting. It reminds us all we have to start creating where we are and just keep uploading.
Your intro is gold! i havent came across any other youtuber that i look forward to their intro more than (ton, ton, ton, "he's crazy"). What makes it better is that you're not out there and obnoxious your super calm and collected in your videos. if i wasnt a follower id assume that after the intro gerald would be someone with this ADHD SQUIRREL! like personality.
I started watching your videos back when you had long hair and have watched every single one ever since. Your info has helped me sooo much with my short film creations. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world!
Congrats Gerald! I've loved the recent experimentation and the reflection (the banana video was hilarious ). Incredible to see what you've developed and what you've learned along the way! Makes me want to do the same with my old videos but I'm afraid to see how bad some of the original ones were! 😅
@@Nathan_Lundstrom So true! Glad you're helping hold me accountable! I am all about improvement! I'm making a video now about some random rocks (creating a new 3d model) but definitely will go through the old videos. Might even convince my gf to watch some of the "oldies" with me 😂
I don't usually comment as I have nothing new to add to the great technical discussions and analysis nor the great writing of your videos. But lurking on your channel for the past 4 years and let me tell you. Continuity matters to me, I am a weird person that watched videos in order when I like a channel. I want to see all the amazing content and I hope to support you as much as a small ant might support a giant, but doing our best. Thank you and keep up the great work! (now to catch up on the other videos)
6 years... what a development! Kinda motivating to see someone thriving who "just started" in 2016 when everyone was like "you can't start a new channel anymore!"

Wow! This video gave me so much hope in the potential future of my own channel! I have to keep pushing. Try, learn, repeat. Enjoy the process. Thanks for so much great content over the years!
Great one Gerald! You crack me up 😂😂 I've often wondered if I should delete some of my old videos. Tutorials where it's just a screen recording and the onboard mic of the laptop. Horrendous quality. Or even worse, when I started introducing my own face into the tutorials as I ran through them. 🙈 But as you said viewers mostly don't follow your story. Just because I don't like how the old videos fail to represent how I want the channel to be perceived now, doesn't mean they're not still of value to some people.
This is awesome Gerald! We all grow and change so much day to day, month to month etc. I think it’s very funny and self aware and overall mature to be able to look years back and laugh at your growth process with your very big and public fanbase. I’m a long time fan and I love your recent experimental stuff man, keep crushing it and exploring your artistic self.
NEVER change the intro. 😀 Done. Done. Gerald Undone. He's Crazy!
Really turned me off the first time I watched one of the video's but at some point you just start loving it.
@@gillesvanleeuwen I've loved it since day one.
The perfect intro length and has a new jack swing vibe to it.
I skip it every time, don't know why it rubs me the wrong way. But the content keeps me coming back over and over and over
