This is the 17th episode I have watched and am still thoroughly impressed with your knowledge and means of delivery. Thank you for all of your attention to detail. I am 73 years old and appreciate how respectful you are of guys questions. Best to you and keep up the good work. Gone fishing.
I know I'm commenting 3 years after the fact, but your channel (and your input, specifically) has been an inspiration to me. Used to fly fish with my Dad as a kid, and have finally started getting back into it! He passed a few years ago. I sure do miss him and this sport really takes me back to our time together😀
Awesome video. As with all your other videos you have provided. I've been fly fishing on and off since I was a kid. Love it. over thinking things with fly fishing. Creeps up on us all. That's when you have stop take a moment and think. Stop over thinking it. Have fun. You will catch fish. Thanks for all the great videos. You have been a big help and inspiring to me and I know many others. Keep up the great work. Bill
Hi from Ireland, love your videos! Thanks for taking the time to make them. Its my first season fly fishing here in Ireland and have learned lots and gained confidence from your channel. All the information is relative no mater where you fly fish. Cheers:)
Thanks Brian....I'm new to flyfishing and that answer summed it up for me...made it simple ....I've certainly learned way more than you can imagine from watching your videos
Brian, thanks so much. Think I was reading way too much into fly selection. That’s really cleared things up, and just makes so much sense. Will be working on presentation from here on in! As always guys, great work and thankyou!!
GREAT Video. It was scary how close my go to flies were your recommendations. Afters Years Woolley Buggers is my crutch fly. I think a lot ends up with your subconscious confidence level. Presentation is important. Early on at a private club near you I tried every fly i had- I’m sure it was bad presentation.
Just started out fly fishing and every time I have what I think is a “dumb question” you guys have a video answering it. Really appreciate these so much. I’m down in Cincinnati, and want to make the trip up to you guys soon
I learned a lot from all of your videos and today I went fly fishing for the first time and I caught my first trout thanks to the things I've learned thank you for doing all of this
Something I've done is go into the local fly shop and ask them what's been working, and then buy a handful of them. Generally less than $20 and you're almost guaranteed to catch fish.
@@Madriveroutfitters Brian hits on a lot of good points in every video, but one of the best things is that he tells us to go to a local fly shop. Definitely some good karma for you folks!
That was a very good summary on fly selection. I think the most important piece of information is what species you’re targeting. Certainly trout and pike probably won’t take the same flies under most circumstances. I really like your take on the types of flies for trout. One could probably do well with just using a pheasant tail nymph and Adams dry fly. Of the hundreds of nymphs, streamers, dry flies and terrestrials in my boxes I’ve caught 90% of the trout on 5-6 patterns. And that has been in all 54 states!
I have been interested in learning how to fly fish for trout mainly I have been fishing my whole life just never took the time to learn how to fly fish. But watching your videos has inspired me to go all in and learn. I just purchased my first fly rod today I dont have a big budget but I feel I picked up a nice combo for my budget. the redington clear water 5wt 9feet. Is what I just picked up. Cant wait to get on the water and continue to learn more about fly fishing from your channel so I wanted to thank you for all you and your team do.
I'm a beginner and I am picking out a couple starter flies and I couldn't decide what I wanted so then I thought about what bait or lures I know are getting the hits from bluegill and bass, so I have been looking at minnows and ones that look like meal worms because I know that's what the bass and bluegill around me will hit. not sure if that is the totally correct idea to have but I feel starting out, that would be the best selection for me so I can at least work on my casting and maybe also catch something while I am there. I also utilized mad river's hotline and they suggested using minnows and double barrled poppers. So I am taking their suggestion on the minnow selection and then I am also going to try fly that closely resembles a meal worm.
Here the thing, and I’m going to do this by telling a story. I do a lot of smallmouth fishing in a local river and came upon a fella using a spin caster. Asked him how he was doing and if he was catching anything, etc. etc. basic fisherman bs. He proceeds to tell me that he has caught a couple using a white, swirly tail grub that was 3” long on a 1 ounce jig head. He then proceeds to ask me about fly fishing and tell me he started to do but gave it up because he could “never match the hatch”. (Insert eye roll here) So I asked him, “When was the last time you saw a white swirly tail grub hatch?” As Brian stated “Pick a fly and make it act like food.” Couldn’t have put it any better.
I was fishing a parachute Adams on a beat on the river Meon and a brownie just erupted up on it and cleared the water by a 2ft!😂 Great vid by the way keep it up👍.

Hi Brian from Montreal, Canada. Just getting started with fly fishing ( fathers’s day gift ) and all your videos have been very helpful and thank you very much for them. I received a Maxcatch ensemble, how do their products rate in the industry? Thanks and keep up the great work!
Think a fish will be caught on whatever they will bite. Sometimes a 8 for a dollar jig from Wal-Mart does the trick. But then that's a story all in itself. Thanks for your videos.
This was a very informative video. Sorry Brian for the redundant email I sent you yesterday. But I hope you still respond back. I'll try and find the entomology vid you are talking about. 👍😁 Thank you so much for these!
I appreciate how you often talk about "not overthinking" and simplification. Our local guides who give talks seem to want make fly fishing very complicated. I suspect it's a sub-conscious desire to show how smart they are. Thanks for not doing that.

Ive been fly fishing for years but it wasnt until I started tying that I realized how ridiculous the amount of patterns were. Every fly pattern can be tied in any color you want. Yes some patterns are better for large hooks and others better fir small. Byt besides that, I cant for the life of me see a reason to carry 20 different dry fly nayfly imitations when I can carry 1 in a variety of sizes and colors
This is the exact same concept as archery hunting. A 2000 dollar hunting outfit and a 3000 dollar bow that shoots 500fps doesn't make you a better hunter. I know plenty of guys that swear only muzzy broad heads kill deer and a certain brand arrow are the only ones that fly straight. Your approach to the animal weather it be in a blind, stalking or in a stand is far more important than the brand or speed of your gear.
@@Madriveroutfitters Thank you for all the usefull information. I'm a long time spin fishermen but I'm growing bored of it so I'm taking the leap into the fly world. There aren't really any fly shops near where I live, about an hour east of Pittsburgh, for me to go pick someone's brain with all the questions I have. So your videos have educated me from knowing absolutely nothing about fly fishing to being able to pick out a rod reel outfit and have a basic understanding of flies. I went to a Orvis shop in Ligonier PA and felt very out classed by their elitist attitude. They almost looked annoyed that I was asking questions and scoffed at the idea of me wanting to get a rod reel outfit that wasn't thousands of dollars. Your attitude and the delivery of your content doesn't give me that vibe in anyway which makes me feel included in trying to learn this sport. If every person that fly fished were the way the people in that shop were I would have walked away from the idea of fly fishing..so thank you again for changing my mind and educating me without making me feel stupid for wanting to learn
