Only on the used market. Kolb discontinued the Ultrastar years ago because of prop size limitations imposed by the high tail boom apparently. But from everything I’ve read they’re a highly regarded ultralights and plans are still available from Kolb.
I’m picking one up in several weeks. This Ultrastar owner invited me out to see his, from pulling it out of its enclosed trailer to unfolding it and getting it ready to fly, to take off, flight, landing, and putting it back in its trailer. I’m definitely hooked! Every single person I’ve talked to said their Ultrastar was one of the best, or the single best, ultralight they ever owned or flew. It was only discontinued because the high tail boom limited prop size.
A walk around preflight aided by everhelpful kids… As Dad rockets off down the runway the little boy is seen waving to the departing aircraft. As he holds his hand up with a shiny bolt shouting “Dad, I think you’ve forgotten something….”

I love that original Kolb model. Although I’d be concerned about that gas tank location especially with out some skid plate protection. A super hard landing and a gear gear collapse…. it’s fried meatballs.
Saw series of videos of 3 paragliders flying from the border of Mexico to Canada on the west coast side. I think I'd rather have one of these for that kind of trip.
I read an old review when the first Ultrastar was made. The reviewer said that he felt like he was riding in a runaway rickshaw with an astonished look in his face. I still have that magazine somewhere. I have to look for it.
I like the John Deere Colors. I was inches away from inking a deal with John Deere a couple decades ago to build an experimental, paint it John Deere Green and Yellow with logo and then represent them and any products they wanted to provide literature for at any and every fly in I could get to, minimum of 4 per year. The guy that liked the idea retired and the guy that replaced him thought it was useless and shit canned it.
I live in Virginia but was up in PA visiting family so I came to that meeting to meet Joel in person for the first time and see his Ultrastar. We had been talking and texting prior to that. Great guy and family.
This one isn’t mine. The owner bought it two years ago and has put a tremendous amount of work into restoring it. I’m getting a similar one next weekend.
They only made them in the 1980s. They could be built from a kit or from plans. I think the Kolb aircraft company recently started selling plans for it again but they can only be purchased used today. They sell for $3000 to $8000 on the used market.
The grass strip he has available does start off with an uphill slope but the field levels off at the top of the slope. They take off and land into the wind when possible.
These are just as safe as your general private airplanes like Cessnas, Cubs, etc. This one flies out of a farmer’s grass airstrip in eastern Pennsylvania.
As advertised, no music, no commentary. Well done Sir…
Thanks. The Ultrastar is definitely an awesome ultralight too.
@@briankopp6171 agree. Are they still available?

@@briankopp6171 thanks for the info
For something designed in the 80s, this aircraft looks surprisingly contemporary. Beautiful little design.
That’s really cool man.
I imagine it feels like you’re flying.
I bet that’s a wonderful feeling.
...NOTHING HERE BUT AWSOMENESS...GREAT BIRD....👍
Very clean looking bird. Thanks for posting
The world needs more Ultrastars.

That thing, is Super COOL! 😎
Love it! I want one. And nobody with children should be flying one of those.
I love the extreme nose-down condition (on the horizontal stabilizer) to fly the tail before nose-up to take off. Nice machine, nice flying.
I had many kolbs in my lifetime, one of these was my first
Really nice paint scheme!
Brilliant, brilliant, well done.
Something like that flew over my house yesterday evening. Pretty cool
beautiful john-deere colors!
I have 2 cobes to mark 3 classic and the fire star man I sure love those cobes they are great flying aircraft
Very nice!!!

Здорово, молодец!
"Nothing flies like a deere."
Go Joel!
This is awesome

Hmmm…like riding in a runaway rickshaw…is that a good thing, or a bad thing?! lol!
Очень круто! Молодец!!!
Love the Jhon Deere Colors 😂👌
Liked the J.D. brand !

John deere?
My dream aircraft..... very nice, simple & elegant....... Did you make it your self?

I’m getting a similar one next weekend.
Ok now you are going to have to do a walk around and show us how this works.
Looking good Joel!
what a great plane.
what engine do you have?
greetings.
@@jaimerivera6996 it’s a friend’s plane. He’s the pilot, I just took the video. He’s got a Rotax 447 on it.
u know it corn country when even the ultralights r john deer XD
corn looks healthy
It seems safe, sell it as soon as possible, assembled it will be more expensive.
What's the point of the helmet
They’re recommended with flying ultralights, especially this type where you’re so exposed in the front of the plane.
Birds hurt
JOHN DEERE GREEN!!😎👍👍
How much for one of those?

Чертежи где взять.
Kolb Aircraft company is once again selling the plans.
Шикарный самолётик!
Жаль только, что он одноместный.
Damn right the world needs more of them you don't have to stand in line at the goddamn airport
A fun little plane, I should have kept mine!
You had a Kolb?
@@briankopp6171 Sure did, bought it from an estate when I loved in GA.
You sold it that’s why you still alive😂
Safety record of ultralights is similar to private planes in general.
I like it but it looks terrifying.
i dunno, something about the way it goes together gives one a feeling of, no, i don't think so Tim. a bit too flimsy
I want one 🧐
Me too. So I’m getting one soon.
👍🏼 you can have one
I got one, you can too.
It took me almost 2 years to restore this plane. A little bit at a time, and not giving up.
looks like a john deere ;=P
alhamdulillah
A John Deer , John Bird
👍
Needs a mini rocket launcher !! 😂
Whoa, Little Nellie!
ive seen that plane before, a lot of scammer on fb try to sell it lol
Interesting, I wasn’t aware of that.
Well, I’ve seen it flown, in person, by the current rightful owner, so this video isn’t a scam at least lol!
@@briankopp6171 yep, its been SOLD like 3 times lol on fb
Jhon Deere gave it to you for buying his tractors
Was that Ski Ramp Takeoff Aircraft carrier style ?
errrrr TO up slope ...why?
TO downslope ... Landing upslope in no wind condition ... YES?
The grass strip he has available does start off with an uphill slope but the field levels off at the top of the slope. They take off and land into the wind when possible.
I think I'd opt for a 3 point harness over a lap belt, just say'n. Great video otherwise!
Agreed on the 3 point harness!
If John Deere built a plane.
Wife is busy getting life insurance .

Aww man….stole my idea!
