Building a dyi tubing slip roller to bend 1”x2” 6061 rectangle aluminum tube from scrap hardwood
I’m making an upper support arm that will connect the top of the tall tail rudder to the top of the mast on my Butterfly gyrocopter.
It’s needed a slight bend on one end for clearance to my 64” propellor.
I visited three of the big local machine and fabrication shops and they all said they couldn’t bend rectangle aluminum tube without crushing or cracking it.
However aluminum tube can be bent safely with a slip roller. At the encouragement of a friend who has machinist experience and flies and modifies gyroplanes, I went ahead and built a diy slip roller from hard wood scraps in my shop. I turned the rollers on my wood lathe from hardwood butcher block countertop material.

Circle jig for the Rikon 18” bandsaw

I made a circle jig for my 18” bandsaw this week. I figured if I’m going to be cutting out more bowl blanks going forward, I might as well make one. I had a piece of leftover 3/4” oak plywood so I used that and based it on some simple ones I saw on RUclips. I used a 5/16” bolt for the center post and drilled 5/16” holes every inch in the circle jig so I can cut out 4” to 36” circles. I needed a...

    So Mr. Brian, what's the deal with this type of wing? I've seen fabric, plastic wrapped, & harder materials but what I'm trying to understand is the longevity of your type of wing? I'm looking at Part 103 aircraft & IDKnow how to determine if a fabric wing is still good or how much life is left? And yours looks to be a plastic material but how long does your type last if taken care of? Trying to learn here >> ANYone who knows please share here? peace

    • @DanasWings
      @DanasWings Месяц назад

      Fabric covered wings can last for decades if properly cared for. It's ultraviolet light from the sun that kills fabric, so if a plane is stored indoors it can last a long time. This plane isn't a "plastic material", it's just shiny paint on the fabric.

    • @diggy-d8w
      @diggy-d8w Месяц назад

      No kidding, that smooth shiny green tricked me... lol, the "plastic material" I was asking about was b/c of the sheen on you wings. I had no idea what I was looking at which is why I asked. I've seen several wing constructions/coverings & I appreciate you sharing & as uneducated as I am right now I'd never call a plane a plastic material. Yeah, I guess I didn't write it correct but I said IDKnow how to determine if a fabric wing good/bad? Then referring to your wing I was saying your wing looked to be a plastic material - because of how shiny it appeared to be. Man, I'm excited over these & know nothing so I get ahead of myself & ask about stuff failing to know it's name even, TY once again......... happy holidays

      The Maule fabric tester is used on the fabric on larger aircraft. In the UK, the "Bettsometer" is used for annual inspections on microlights. The Bettsometer is a very small spring- bal;ance fitted with a hook. The hook is inserted into the fabric, and the tester puts a pre-determined load in line with the surface. If the fabric doesn't tear. it passes. There are different values for each aircraft. Available from Clive Betts sails in the UK.

      Thank You Sir, I've only asked about this sort of thing more than a dozen times but I'm appreciative for you informing me. Indeed, a couple years back I paged through all the NTSB reports on Kolb accidents. The majority were fatal. Compared to other ultralights like the MiniMax line, where almost none were fatal. There’s no structure in a Kolb to dissipate the impact.

    • @Sparkplug487
      @Sparkplug487 3 месяца назад

      It stalls at like 20mph. You could damn near fly it into the side of a building at 20mph and Mayne break your foot. The engine is secured with 4 1/4 inch an bolts. Its not going to break off. A ultralight pilot who assembles his plane properly, and does a through pre flight. Has a better chance of dying on the drive to the hangar than he does flying.

    • @PRH123
      @PRH123 3 месяца назад

      @@Sparkplug487 Just read the NTSB reports, the majority of the Kolb accidents listed are fatal, and there’s a lot of them. Whereas if you read the MiniMax reports, almost none are fatal. The difference seems to be that a MiniMax has the engine in front of the pilot, who is surrounded by a light wood structure. In the post crash photos, the structure is often obliterated into a pile of wood bits, but this seems to absorb the impact forces as it does so, giving the pilot a good chance to survive with little injury. Whereas in the case of a Kolb, the pilot is perched out there in front and takes all the impact forces on his body.
