I was fishing in the pond behind my house this morning and got hooked in the thumb. After much pain from getting the fish off and cutting the lure loose I came inside and did a search on RUclips on how to remove a hook. I've been a fan of this channel for years so it was great to see Richard's video pop up first. I followed the procedure and got the hook out with one quick pop of the line. Thanks for sharing this video Richard!

I have done the same thing. The other option, which I prefer, is to push the barb back out through the finger, clip the hook past the barb, and then slide the hook without the barb out. I am afraid that ripping out the barb the way you did will damage more tissue. I could be wrong; but, it's my preferred method.

It's a treble hook, it is hard to cut it into a separate hook while in a boat by yourself.

Richard, next time run that hook all the way through until the barb is exposed. Then you can clip the barb off and remove the hook with less damage and pain.
Thats what I thought he was going to do when he brought out the clippers... then he started wrapping the string around the hook and I wad like...nooooooooo!
Poking it all the way through is much more painful and won't work if it's deep

I've been hooked on the fingers, hands, shoulder and even the back of my head.
The finger and hands were my faults. The shoulder and back of the head were due to another fisherman.
It's a lot easier if the barb makes a circle under the skin and comes back out. You can cut the barb off and the rest of the hook will just slide out. I've had to do something very similar but I just grabbed it with some pliers and ripped it out. When it's straight down, your options are kind of limited.
No fish hook can stop the Machine! Good job yankin that sucker out and awesome tip for new and even experienced anglers.
Now just rub some Catfish belly slime over and get back to fishing. Lol

Eric Wallace I’ve heard this for getting barbed etc. is there not bacteria in the slime as well? (I understand it fights off other bacteria so maybe this is a dumb question lol. Just doesn’t seem intuitive to me)

Sorry to spoil the toughness fest but if you have side cutters you can cut the hook in half and push it out in the direction of the point. Less damage

I got to say that was impressive first of all no cursing or carrying on! I don't think many/any other RUclipsrs would have been able to do that. but I am confused as to what the difference between wrapping the fishing line around the hook and yanking it out was versus just taking a pair of pliers and yanking it out did you wrap the fishing line in a way that made the barbed not tear out the meat? Normally I would have just pushed it through and cut the Barb off but it looks like it was stuck in your knucklebone almost? GawwLee!!!

They don’t make men like this anymore. These ole county boys are slowly leaving us. Idk what we’ll do without them. Richard Gene is a gift to us. He reminds me a lot of my dad. My dad had fished for 50 years religiously and he knows a lot of these old tricks Richard teaches. He even watches Richard now and he don’t even watch RUclips. He knows nothing about it. I have his phone set up where he gets a update when Richard uploads and he can click the update and it takes him right to the video. Lol. He’s on some of my fishing videos. A lot of footage is shot while I’m with him. Anyway This just made think about this gen and how well miss them when they’re gone. They’re tough as nails and still have good hearts.

Thanks mate - just hooked myself and was considering a long ride into town but you saved the day! The pull out really didn't hurt much more than the hook being in there! Agree on doing it fast - at first I couldn't feel anything but within a minute or so it does start to hurt

I wish I knew this trick two months ago. Got a brim hook in my thumb ended up pushing it the rest of the way through and then clipping the barb off before pulling it out
If u push it all the way through why would u clip the bard and ease it back out? U run it through then cut it in half and keep pulling

Pliers are faster, now you know why fish get so mad when you hook-em. I had a crazy Small mouth jump on my leg and start shaking like they do. Me and Mr. Small Mouth were dancing a jig until I got to my Pliers and unfastened that Pop-R from my leg. That is one good reason to use barbless hooks and keep pliers on your belt. I was begging that fish to stop; but that bass put whooping on my leg I never forgot. You got off easy with just one hook, that’s for sure Elmo.

Stuck a treble hook in my left thumb a couple of years ago. Went to the ER. Doc called the maintenance man for wire snips. Gave me a nerve block that hurt worse than the hooks. $1800 later it was out. I like your way better.
Man, this is proof you're a machine. If that'd been me...well, with RUclips wanting to keep the profanity to lower levels to stay advertiser-friendly, none of my audio would have been salvageable. If I were to start trying to bleep all the cussing out, it'd sound like 40 R2-D2s tryin' to order Chinese takeout without sayin' chicken or rice.
I'm an ER doctor and I've done this in the ER. You wrap a string or fishing line around the hook and then place downward pressure on the eye of the long part of the shank the suddenly yank the hook backward. This causes the barb to dislodge and travel backward through the tract it made as it entered and it should not catch. Of course I always numb someone up first with lidocaine. It's not very often I have to actually dig out a hook.

Man oh man does that bring back some bad memories Richard, i took my son and his friend fishing and my son hooked his friend right in the eye lid! no joke... i was able to keep everyone calm, i got the hook out which had went all the way through the skin and the barb was exposed, i mashed the barb down and got it out and the kid didn't even bleed but a drop if that. that was also the day we got stopped by the game and fish, got a ticket for the young kids not having there life vest on. bad day on the water. didn't even catch a fish. :-(
