    I feel really bad for Melisa Gilbert having played this role. She had some really big shoes to fill, and everyone was familiar with her when this movie was released, which makes it that much harder to watch. Patty Duke was basically unknown when she made the original in 1962, so when everyone saw her performance, we barely new her as a TV character and therefore didn't know what to expect. Her portrayal of Helen Keller will never, ever be topped.

      Right 100 % agree with you.But Patty duke played in a theatre before she performed in Arthur Penn's movie the role of Helen keller.She and Ann bancroft produced on a stage at Broadway almost every night for 2 years and Patty started to be Helen at the age of 12 which makes a huge difference .She had this role under her skin and was an excellent stage actress.No comparison with Melissa;But it will never be topped absolutely!

    That was an amazing accomplishment by an incredible person, Anne Sullivan, or as they say "Miracle Worker". She was a saint to have so much patience and kindness to teach someone with 2 major disabilities. It's hard enough to communicate to someone with 1 of those disabilities that is was a miracle to get through to Helen who was deaf and blind. It was an equally amazing accomplishment for Helen Keller to go from basically being a rag doll to graduating from such a prestigious college at the age of 24. I still can't believe that she could even function as a regular human being with her disabilities. Great story and ending for two incredible people.

      Frenchie séverine Indeed. If memory serves me Duke won an academy award at the age of ten for the Miracle Worker. And Anne Bancroft, her teacher in the movie i think won best supporting actress.
      Did you know Anne Bancroft(god rest her soul) was Italian American? Like lots of actors and entertainers she chose a sobriquet or pseudonym instead of using her real name.

    • @JohnDoe-wo1jd
      @JohnDoe-wo1jd 9 лет назад +3

      I'm part Italian and i never knew she was Italian until after her death at 75. She is one of my favorite actresses. She was also famous for "the graduate" movie. I am not ethnocentric but i am sick and tired of my fellow Americans stereotyping Italian actors as either mafia, sex maniacs, having a dumb nyc accent, etc. Most americans like stereotyping and they love actors like DeNiro who is ok at playing a crazy person or hitman but comes nowhere the versatility of Bancroft, Arman Asanti, Leonardo DiCaprio, etc. Like most Italian Americans we hate the mafia. I despised the way "Godfather" movies glamorized the mafia. And for about 20 years now there is really no Italian mafia left in america. Its become "equal opportunity" lol, organized crime is spread out over many ethnicities now. But really as long as you have a war on drugs you are going to have high crime and violence, not by the users but by the cartels who literally kill each other and kill innocents to gain market share. there's a great police organization called LEAP, Law Enforcement against Prohibition. they believe and its been proven in some countries if addicts and users get their fix at a clinic, its easier to gradually come off, and most of all the violent crime rate plummets when the government allows medical distribution and rehab....I'm also Polish-Russian American on my mothers side.

      Agreed... I first saw The Miracle Worker in eight grade... I read the book with my English class then we watched the movie... the 1962 version with Party Duke as Helen... I knew a lot of Helen Keller a couple before that because in fifth grade I did a project where I had to be a wax figure from someone throughout history and I was Helen... I digress, Patty Duke as Annie Sullivan in this 1979 remake isn’t as well acted Melissa Gilbert however should not have portrayed the role as Helen a.)she’s too tall
      b.)too well known by this point
      In the 2000 remake with Hallie Eisenberg as Helen is another story... Hallie was only eight at the time when the movie was to come out and she did an excellent job though I was only 9 months old when the 2000 remake came out

    Am I the only one who thinks this is hard to watch with Melissa Gilbert? Don't get me wrong, I love her and always will, I think she's an fantastic actress who did great as a small child in Little house on the prairie. But everyone knew her as Laura Ingalls at this time and not only she's far to old for this role, everyone knew Patty Duke as Helen Keller. She did so great, I think her performance couldn't be topped.

    Annie was blind, but she had nine operations to repair her eyesight. However, she had dark glasses because she was sensitive to light. Helen wears her glasses, her hat, and jacket when she studies her things when they first meet. Hope that answers your question.

    This movie was only good as a novelty item. Only to see Patty Duke play Annie Sullivan and that's all. The movie itself does not measure up to the original in which she played Helen with Ann Bancroft as her Annie. Melissa Gilbert is simply to old for the part and her portrayal is weak at best. The original Miracle Worker is the only one worth watching.

  • @dmodlin71
    @dmodlin71 16 лет назад +1

    Melissa Gilbert, by then already very famous, owned the rights to the tv version, according to Patty Duke's biography.
    I adore Patty Duke, and nobody could out-do her as Helen. And in the same vein, Anne Bancroft as Annie Sullivan was perfection.
    Haha, the seventies - all that makeup on Patty Duke......
    Little known facts - the real Helen Keller was very intelligent, learned to speak, and also supported communism (when many Americans still did)

      Maybe if Melissa had played an older Helen it would be better. Her playing 6 year old Helen is more comical than serious. Hallie Eisenberg is my favorite Helen because she was my first Helen but Patty Duke did good too. Hallie Eisenberg actually looked 6 years old in the role but I think she was 8 but still better than a teenager

      Elle Noir. I agree. Nothing can come close to that original with Patty as Helen.Very touching. And Patty conveyed so well in her acting the difficulty Ann Sullivan was having with her. Ann just wasn't going to let Helen grab food and eat off her plate like the parents and their guests allowed her to do. It is actually kind of funny in the original to see the parents and guests talking about the issues of that time, and ignoring Helen, as she walks around grabbing and eating food off their plates.:)

    From what I've heard, the playwright changed Helen's age to twelve so an older actress could fill in the role as it would be too complicated for a six-year-old to pull off. The same kind of thing was done for the characters of Alex Kinter in "Jaws" (1975) and Claudia in "Interview with the Vampire" (1994). ; )

In Patty's autobiography she tells her true ages when she did Movies & TV work.. When she portrayed Helen Keller on Broadway for 3 years..When the Big screen version of The Miracle Worker was made they said Patty was 15 and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at 16 yrs old..

    I have heard about this film, but I never thought I would be able to see it. It really is interesting seeing Patty Duke (who is famous for playing Helen Keller in the earlier 1962 film with Anne Bancroft) in the role of Annie Sullivan this time. I wonder what was going through her head when she was asked to do the film (but as Annie) over again. Melissa Gilbert is a great actress, but at the time this was made, I don't think she was the right choice for Helen.

    To this whole production I say, "Pfffffftt!"

    To cast Melissa Gilbert as Helen was a crappy-decission....I love Melissa but she was too connected to the Little House in the Prairie that time.... Looks like some big studio bosses pulled the strings here somehow....while maybe other people more connected to the production fainted in shock :)

      I could be wrong, but I think Melissa Gilbert WAS the big studio boss that you mentioned.

    It's not the best role for Melissa :((( I love her, but she is too old for this role here. My favorite Helen Keller is Hallie Kate Eisenberg (remake in 2000). That girl is amazing in that film!!!!!!! She have got an Oscar from me :P :D She is so little, and very-very-very good actress!!!!!!

    This is the remake, in the first one from 1962, Patty Duke played Helen.

    I think the one with patty duke was better . when i see the movie i still cry. I was 7ys old when i first seen the movie, to me malissa was almost as big as her teacher they could have gotton a 7yrs.old to play the part

    The director of the original film (and original stage production), Arthur Penn, went on to direct such masterpieces as Bonnie and Clyde, Little Big Man and the Missouri Breaks, so you know that the original version was an artful, canny, unsentimental look at disabilities and teaching. This travesty of a remake, on the other hand, is more like a sub-par episode of Little House on the Prairie.

    This is such a silly remake! OMG!
    I Love Melissa Gilbert on Little House but this is just NOT the role for her. Teacher and student are the same height and student looks way too mature on this version. Terribe casting. For those who don't know, go see the ORIGINAL film of this movie... waaaay much better! Anne Bancroft played the Teacher and young Patty Duke played the student, Helen Keller. check it out! Movie title 'Miracle Worker'. Anne Bancroft won Best Actress and young Patty Duke won Best Supporting Actress Awards for these roles at the 1963 Academy Awards!

    Sorry Gilbert but you seem too tall and look to old to play this part but it is awsome to see Patty playing the role of Anne, after her best friend and co star played that part and she as Helen when she was a girl.

    I preferred the first version by Arthur Penn with Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke. A hard, violent, but wonderful movie.
