Congrats brother. I mentioned you and this hunt in my live show with BowTech last night. Hope it brings even more eyes over to watch it. So happy for your success!!! God bless ya.
Thanks for the video. It was very well-done and well-edited. I appreciate coming along on your hunt with you! Looking forward to the gear video, and how the hammock/tarp setup worked out with the various weather you encountered.
+Shawn's Outdoor Adventures It wasn't required. I just wanted to keep as much of the muscle attached to the bone as possible to prevent shortening until after rigor mortis. I cut the lower portions off before we drove home.
+Super64heavy I was using an ENO Double Nest with Ultimate hammock straps and a 7/64 amsteel ridgeline. I had a DIY 15D 9'x9' tarp and a standard sleeping bag and pad.
There's something to be said about when you're distracted and focusing on something else and relaxed I almost feel as though when you're trying to be all ninja it's like the deer can sense it...lol. congratulations on your Colorado success!
+Matthew Norris For sure. There was a time hanging a stand when I looked up and saw a doe watching me about 40 yards away. I just pretended like I couldn't see her and kept going. I got fully setup and bow pulled up the tree before she finally decided to run.
Never seen anyone pack out the lower legs on a quartered animal before, we never do. Just wondering why pack the extra weight? We hang the quarters and on a cross stick and debone them. They cool better and can hang in the bag just as well as on the bone.
Good question. Since I knew I could get the meat on ice relatively quickly, I wanted to keep the quarters in tact. It prevents the meat from shortening after being separated from the bone (which could make it tougher) and allows me to do a better job butchering in a clean environment at home. If I had a really long ways to pack out or it was very hot, I would have de-boned to allow it to cool better and reduce pack out weight.
It interests me that it’s more common to hunt mule deer from the ground but not whitetail. Is there any particular reason for this? I only ask because I have been considering trying to hunt whitetail from the ground.
+Alekart In my limited experience with mule deer, it would be harder to hunt them with tree stands because the landscape is different. It's big land, and there are tons of pinch points and routes that may or may not be used. Whereas in open areas, you can glass mulies easier and make a move. For a lot of whitetail habitat, the pinch points and bedding areas are a little more consolidated and hidden, and the hunting pressure is usually much greater per acre. The mule deer I saw were not as skittish as public land whitetails would have been. So I think it's a combination of terrain and pressure. Whitetails can be hunted and shot from the ground, but in general stands will make it easier because you have visibility over undergrowth and can get away with a little more movement.
+P Miller I have also heard that high country mule deer tastes better than those in more of the low elevation areas due to diet, but this is the only one I've tried.
I've noticed a lot of western hunters will hunt with just their merino wool base layers if the temps rise. I'm thinking that the terrain would be really tough on a base layer, and i'm hesitant to drop $$$ on a good base layer and then use it as my only garment. Do you have any thoughts? Thanks!
+Jody Marble I wouldn't use merino as an only layer for pants, but it's generally what I'll do for the upper body, both out west and at home hunting whitetails. The biggest thing is just not having to go through a bunch of thorns regularly on the upper body.
I hear ya.. I follow another guy by the name of DJ of Blackbilloutdoors on here from MN & put him onto a spot that i know has plenty of deer & virtually no pressure.. He was hunting the Superior WI municipal forest area & It gets hammered by the local bowhunters + the human traffic of hikers/ duck hunters / ect always driving up & down that way.... I hope he connects with a good buck where i showed him , We def have a good herd by my house.....
Like i said before , If you want to try some pretty scenic areas of the Brule river area - I would be more than happy to show you a few awesome spots around there too..... I haven't been able to get out myself yet but will start this weekend when my son gets here.
+P Miller How do you you distinguish if they do or don't have eye guards? Is it just a "3x4" if it doesn't have them and a "3x4 with eye guards" if it does? I'm not very familiar with the nomenclature. Usually we'd just call it a nine pointer if it were a whitetail.
I've been walking through the woods in Colorado with 2 other guys, one smoking, and everyone talking loudly -- miles from any semblance of a town. There, at like 20 yards, was a big buck just munching on his food. Never took off. I think the real key is that he wasn't acting sneaky like a predator. Not all animals spook, especially when you aren't giving them reasons to do so. Perhaps whitetails act differently. But I've seen similar situations a few times.
Ok, what the hell! That was the same tame ass buck from the first encounter....is this a frickin "town" deer. Your camp looked like you were setting up in a neighborhood. That deer has been around people a lot it seemed to me. Glad you got your first buck and all but damn that all looked fishy.
+Philip Colton I think you're confusing trailhead footage with camp footage. Your worst-case assumptions undermine the dozens of miles and thousands of feet of elevation gain we put on during that hunt, so I take offense to it. That probably was one of the dumber bucks I've seen that had already lived through a hunting season. I have a few theories as to why, and recognized it as the same deer after reviewing footage, but do not regret my decision.
DIY Sportsman ok man take offense. Lol. Guess your editing made it look that way. I have only seen one buck act that way out deep in the woods and it was one that had been relocated from an resort area, he was getting aggressive when people stop feeding him because they ran out of food or didn't have any to give him. Had been hand fed to long and to comfortable with people. He didn't last long during the season either. I still congratulate you on your first deer.
Congrats brother. I mentioned you and this hunt in my live show with BowTech last night. Hope it brings even more eyes over to watch it. So happy for your success!!! God bless ya.
+Sean's Outdoor Adventures Thanks Sean!
Yeah, man. I'm so happy for you! That was a great job! God bless you.
Wow! To get the deer and yourself shooting it in the same shot while self filming is amazing. Great job.
Thanks for the video. It was very well-done and well-edited. I appreciate coming along on your hunt with you! Looking forward to the gear video, and how the hammock/tarp setup worked out with the various weather you encountered.
Great video, very raw and real with how you film and let the story develop.
You got to love when the camera shot just magically works out. Great video!
Great hunt! Can't wait to try our hand at a Colorado Muley!
Nice man!!!!! Glad to see you get something in Colorado!
Great Video! That is an awesome DIY trip and congrats on the Mule Deer.
Congrats on a great deer, man! Awesome hunt! -Collin
Thanks for sharing -congrats on filling your tag
Always enjoy your stuff, keep after them, great work
Congrats on your mule deer buck and awesome video. Was it required that you have to leave the foot part of the legs on for packing out?
+Shawn's Outdoor Adventures It wasn't required. I just wanted to keep as much of the muscle attached to the bone as possible to prevent shortening until after rigor mortis. I cut the lower portions off before we drove home.
I happy for your success, great job! What kind of hammock setup are you using? Thanks, Scott
+Super64heavy I was using an ENO Double Nest with Ultimate hammock straps and a 7/64 amsteel ridgeline. I had a DIY 15D 9'x9' tarp and a standard sleeping bag and pad.
Congratulations taking a nice deer. Great video as well.
Wow... what an epic hunt! congrats!

THAT IS AWESOME! Shot on camera and everything! I see you went with a hammock this year. Will you be doing a gear list video for this hunt?
+Louie Brennan-LB4 Yes I will, and we'll probably discuss some of the gear in our next podcast as well.
Great video! Was the deer tag OTC or drawing? Im assuming the cow elk tag was a draw?
+The Outdoorsman All of the tags were easy draw.
Colorado doesn't have OTC deer west of I25
Great hunt alway love your videos .Thanks KY
nice buck, congrats. Hard work by yourself!
Great video as always! Congrats!

Would you mind sharing when and where this hunt took place.
Congratulations man, if you ever wanna come to Kentucky, give me a shout. Was your deer tag OTC?
+Hill Fit It was a lottery tag, but one that was almost a guaranteed draw.
Congrats on the harvest. What kind of pack is that?
I'm in the Market for one.
+John Gibson It's an Alps Commander frame with a Cabelas Deluxe Whitetail day pack strapped on.
Thank you!!

Congrats! I got my first muley buck with my bow just a few weeks ago last season I got a doe.
+Erin Hutchings Nice job!
Thanks! I also hunt in Colorado.
Nice hunt! I've never had mule deer, how is it compared to white tail...any different?
+My Road Tours So far I can't tell any difference in flavor.
I hear white tail is way better. But I haven't been successful on a Mule Deer yet.
+P Miller I have also heard that high country mule deer tastes better than those in more of the low elevation areas due to diet, but this is the only one I've tried.

I really enjoyed this video thanks
October lull for youtube videos of everyone around the MN/WI area !!! hahaha... Are you hunting WI this year ?
+ThistleDewOutdoors I will be but haven't bought a license yet. I've been forcing myself to try and become more familiar with an area in MN
I hear ya.. I follow another guy by the name of DJ of Blackbilloutdoors on here from MN & put him onto a spot that i know has plenty of deer & virtually no pressure.. What unit are you guys hunting in ?
Did you get out west hunting this year? Video?
I didn't go this past fall but wil be going again this year.
Is that a kifaru sheep tarp? How do you like the floorless shelter?
+Robert Anderson It's a 9x9' tarp that I made from 15D membrane Silpoly from Ripstopbytheroll. I'll be doing a video on it.
It's awesome, I'm looking forward to the video on it.
What time of the year did you guys go out?
We go out there during the muzzleloader season week.
Any updates on the Homemade Hybrid Longbow?
Are you still using the alps pack frame?
+latorgator23 Yes, I am.
Congratulations, great video.
Cool hunt bro. Enjoyed it
Nice work man!
Great video dude
What kind of tarp do you use @ 11:30?
+Nate Glocke It was a 9x9' square tarp that I sewed together from 15D Membrane Silpoly from Ripstopbytheroll.
nicely done!
What elevation were you at?
+RockinRod Outdoors Around 9000 feet.
Nice work!
That's awesome congrats!!!
What bow is That
New Breed GX2
I could smell you through the video. haha
Where in Colorado
Colorado eh, want to go out there myself.
10:35 - That CHEESE !!!!
Even robots can smile.
I never count the eye guards when I say it's a 3x4 or whatever. Whitetail hunters do that.
I don't think I would have taken the deer as well. It really shouldn't be that easy.
I've been walking through the woods in Colorado with 2 other guys, one smoking, and everyone talking loudly -- miles from any semblance of a town. 4:20 nothing more curious and dumb than a young mule deer buck
Ok, what the hell! That was the same tame ass buck from the first encounter....is this a frickin "town" deer. Your camp looked like you were setting up in a neighborhood. That deer has been around people a lot it seemed to me. Glad you got your first buck and all but damn that all looked fishy.

+Philip Colton That's fair. There's no way for me to know if something similar was the case here as well.
what bow is the that
+Houseknives It's a New Breed GX2.
