Just watched your video and I have to say it was awesome you were literally covered up in deer that one day. It was like you were ringing a dinner bell the way the bucks were just running in on you.. Great stuff
Great footage! Real deal. I hate it for you on your big buck, but I've been there too. It is so hard to get an opportunity on pressured ground, sometimes even harder to get a clean shot. But, that is the blessing/curse of archery hunting mature deer. Keep up the good work. I have used several of your how to videos on setting up my gear - super helpful. Thanks for all you do!
Great video. I also bowhunt Northern WI public, though a bit east of you, and I know how tough it can be. Passing up that 2.5 year old 8 couldn't have been easy. We need more hunters willing to do this to improve the age class of the bucks. Good luck this fall!
So glad to see you guys again. Ghillie up and face paint kids! Ghillies allow way more movement on the ground! Great footage. The licking branch is a spot that will be historic the rest of your days. You e found the greatest deer sign of all. That can be hunted anytime any phase of the rut. I hope you camera ed it . The cool thing is the biggest of the whole area knows about it as does every other deer in the woods. So cool!!!!!! Great video! Keep them coming! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I learn a lot from your videos! love your filming style! You give me the confidence to self film from the ground when I can't find a tree for my saddle.
Great footage! It's always amazing how all the bucks work the same licking branch. I would of had a hard time passing on 1 or 2 of them bucks. They will be nice next year though if they survive. Good job getting so close to them without getting busted!👍
I was just searching for you last night because I hadn't seen any new videos for a while. Glad to see new content from you. I was worried that you had retired.
Hey buckslayer, whats the deal with the message about receiving your parcel? I got something similar this morning, about chosen for a giveaway... figure its just a crap hack, but wanted your input! Thanks!
Great videography. You must really work with the deer to get their choreography down so well. Excellent and exciting footage. Good luck with the remainder of your season.
Would like to see an update on your climbing method. Currently I’m using wild edge with knaider swaider aiders but contemplating switching/making set of sticks.
Thorallly enjoyed the video. When that young 8 point came trotting in under you did he grunt at all? I thought I heard him grunt. Love the footage of the young 8 making a scrape then not long after that spike buck working the same scrape. Good stuff!
Great footage! That one buck near licking branch sure looked like a good one? Wasn't some footage of a cow elk? What state? Wisc or MN? Esp for elk pic? Thx
Great share,,, I'm assuming these are your rut hunts all rolled into one...Dating them would be nice just to drive in our heads when the best times are. Was that a Wisconsin elk ? It's a busy time. Stay out hunted. Edit in the winter. We still will enjoy. More time to watch for us out hunting.. thanks for keeping it real . Good luck to Sam and yourself.
Camo is like fishing lures. They only have to catch the fisherman. My standing joke is that I bought the perfect camo once. I put it in the closet and was never able to find it again.
This is one of the coolest videos I’ve seen. Loved that evening hunt. It’s like all the bucks were “checking in” for the day by visiting that licking branch. Assuming there was a scrape there too?
Yes. Sometimes they've heavily paw away the fresh leaves, but many deer just hit the licking branch. Some just go downwind to scent check the scrape from a distance too
One of the reasons I enjoy your hunts is the reverence you pay to the flintlock and the deer. I'm tired of watching people with precision scope harvest an animal and proceed to loud "high fives" and "that's what I'm talking about". Merry Christmas!
I've been hunting from the ground for 24 years since I fell breaking my back. I've had a big nine point about 5 feet from me while I hid behind a cedar tree. He actually seen my boots under the tree. Had no chance to draw my bow.
I practice some pretty extreme scent control. Always looking to exchange new ideas. I see you wearing the scentlok. Given how you approach everything else I’m sure there’s more behind your process?
This is the first year I've even sort of attempted any kind of scent control. So I've been keeping detailed notes on deer reactions and what I had done that day. For instance, was I wearing scentlok dropdown facemask, non-air permeable and/or scentlok outer layers? Rubber boots? Did I wipe down my camera gear, bow, and sticks with a scent free wipe? Did I rinse my mouth and gargle with closys? Was I wearing scentlok for any vegetation I brushed up against or touched on the access? And then I also took notes like when Sam and I were sitting together, since she did nothing except for the rubber boots. And I have the years' worth of prior experiences to compare against too. So far of well over a dozen individually separate deer that have walked on or over my scent trail, I've observed zero reaction. When they get downwind of me in a tree or on the ground, they still usually react. If they're inside of 15 yards, they usually trot back to where they cake from. If they're further, I've seen them flick their tail and keep walking and feeding. In all of the cases where I've gotten busted, there's usually at least one thing where I can say "well I could have done this too..." so I've yet to confirm if going full bore all-in would give me enough confidence to set up where I know a deer will be downwind before I'll get a shot opportunity.
Yea it's a good option to try. Different people will have different preferences once they try and compare with pins. For hunting, I haven't had any issues and have made nothing but great shots on deer. All have been under 30 yards though. At the longer ranges, I still prefer to range and use the tick marks. And from that perspective pins would be better and less clutter. Garmin I've been pretty fond of as well and have strictly been more precise with. But its also not legal in all the states I hunt and has the possibility of more issues and is heavy.
Love your videos, you’ve helped me a lot with all aspects of hunting (climbing, scouting, & patience). I was wondering what you use to hold your bow while ground hunting? Thanks Stay Safe.
I have used a number of things. I have used the limb legs from mathews. I've used a normal hys strap or bow hook if I've got a tree or sapling in front of me. If on a stool, I often will just lay the bow on my lap. Ideally, it can be positioned in front of your face to where you can raise your hand up, and draw back with as minimal movement or your body and the bow as possible, so holding the bow vertical does tend to make more sense.
There were some scrapes I'd tried putting some synthetic forehead gland on the licking branch though not on any of the ones in this video. They were all natural. So far I haven't seen much of a difference in scent vs no scent. It might make a bigger difference when making a mock scrape vs hunting over ones you find already there.
