I feel the worst part is that any criticism will be deflected by Disney simply saying “Look, we did an ethnic! Huh, huh?”

That's super annoying, but it also doesn't help that there's enough people getting really racist about it.

@@MangoPop what they say? What's tea?
Disney has big hits and big misses. Encanto was original and people loved it.
Is making an original movie loosely based on any African mythology that hard? Just swapping races is not what I would call representation. Griffy nailed it, they just exploiting us and disguising it as inclusivity.
Yo remember how they made Black Panther and just fused all the African countries into one big one while barely touching on their culture at all? That's how the world thinks of Africa, like it's one giant country instead of their own places with rich unique histories
People didn't like Encanto man
@@ApexGale they know its good enough for most people despite being lazy and to them that's all that matters because in the end itll take the least effort while also being inclusive enough to draw in more marvel fans

The people that want to watch the little mermaid are grown ups that liked the movie when they were little.
I went trick or treating with my friends and their daughters. The one girl-super pale and blonde due to her Polish ancestry-dressed as Jasmine from Aladdin. At one point we passed a kid of Arab descent… dressed as Elsa. Just let kid be kids and like who they like, stop getting bent out of shape over useless stuff like skin color.
I agree that we shouldn't see color. The only problem is, the people who wanted to see Ariel black don't think this way. They want representation. It was never about erasing skin color as a factor. They want black dominance as revenge for years of abuse. And it will never end.
I know like I have more important things to worry about then a disney movie

Most people "upset" don't actually care about Disney making black or brown princesses. Everybody loved princess and the frog. Everybody loved Moana. What people don't like is when you go back to an ALREADY existing character and suddenly change it, especially if it's just to obviously virtue signal.

Thats the point I've been making but it gets largely ignored
Princess and the frog was a banger
Agreed 100%. Also, that's why I love disney's The Princess and the Frog - it's roughly based on european tale, but with a clever twist, and changing her skin color was actually understandable and perfectly fitted. It's a completley new character.
Disney's princess and the frog was actually based on a real black woman.

Fr I agree to an extent bc idk if you talking about characters like miles morales or falcon
im so glad griffy talked about his, i was feeling attacked in my family cause i was literally the only one who thought this was retarded and disney was a lazy fuck. glad to see at least one person of color, even if it is the internet, agrees that this is stupid and not worth any of color folks time or attention.

Joker profile pic talks about society...get real. Nobody is losing their job over a take on the little mermaid or opinion. Getting called racist or homophobic on Twitter isnt gonna make your friends not like you or your employer to let you go. They only do that if you actually deserve it and are saying actual racist and homophobic remarks.
If there is a LGBT show and you go on twitter to call it "mid" and people start calling you homophobic and find your job to tell them they will look at your social and see that it's just you calling a show mid and not do anything. If you are actually saying homophobic slurs then you might be let go

Here's the thing about the casting: if Ariel was ORIGINALLY black in the animated movie, then that wouldn't be a problem, even if it is a danish tale (cause she's just a mermaid).
But here's the thing: she wasn't depicted as black. She was white, and she was modelled after a white person. Her appearance has been displayed on merchandise, tv series, video games, and amusement parks. Everyone knows who she is and what she looks like, and Halle Bailey does not look like her. It's just inconsistent. If Ariel had originally been modelled after a black girl, then we wouldn't be asking for a white woman to portray her in a live action movie.
yep and this is why I believe it's forced inclusion.
@Sandman552 Do you feel the same way about Death? I do. Don't care if the character has the power to look however they want- she still had a "main" look in the comics.
@Ricarlo fuck off leech. You’re like a remora trying to suck subscribers off of griffy’s taint and it’s pathetic and disgusting

That's exactly why i don't like about Disney movies these days Disney don't actually give a shit and are preying on those who think that they actually give a fuck lol.
Honestly, it's okay that they don't care about us. No business ever does. They're here to do business and make money in the way they know how. The problem is that they're failing to do that by not listening to their money source, that being us.
I hate every live action remake. Hated remakes of Aladdin, The Lion King and definitely hate this one. Lazy Disney just reusing old stories again and again for profit
You should be mad because she's black. It's hideously racist of them. Culture theft. And then they claim white people have no culture. Yeah, we don't if you keep pretending it's yours.
You're right. It's not the "black", it's the "because".
The irony is that there was indeed a mermaid in Little Mermaid of other ethnicity they could use, but in the animated series; her name was Gabriella, she was deaf and mute, with an octopus companion that acted as her translator / interpreter. She’s also Latina. She and Ariel became friends rather quickly too. Ofc, we can't expect Disney to remember that, do we?
I ended up having to edit my comment to include these corrections after checking the wiki as well. 😓
Her name was actually Gabriella, but yeah why didn't they put her instead? She and Ariel were best friends and Gabriella was courageous too!

Honestly, my only gripe with making Ariel black is what Griffy said. They're only doing it to appear inclusive. Plus, poc shouldn't get hand-me-down fairytales. Let's just create our own black mermaids and Cinderellas.

Me personally, I do believe that it will have a positive impact on not just black children but all children. I also believe that Disney should actually try and be inventive whilst occasionally a race swap is fine. All of that taken into account, sure we have a right to be annoyed that black people are clearly being used for profit - but that isn't why the racists are mad.
I completely agree with Griffy on this one. May I also add how it is going to be very annoying when the movie obviously turns out to be a lazy cheap imitation of the original and everyone who says that will be called racist for not liking the movie

Literally like 4 times as many black people in the US as gingers, but *somehow* they gingers aren't a minority, so it's cool.
The weird part is that hair color, while likely originating from white people, can be in *any* skintone(and tends to look pretty good combined darker skin tones, to be real), yet tends to also get erased with the character's original skintone. I don't get it

Yeah, they could easily make stories with African folklore look at kirikou (nobody knows about this movie but it's actually good) but instead they choose to change the color of an existing character to make money and call you a racist if you don't agree with this decision. They already did stories with character that aren't white (Moana, Encanto, Mulan, Aladin) and nobody complain about it
i know Kirikou... what a great artistic animation. but you know... it was censored in USA bcuz the naked body parts. This is the whole stupid PC. Also i know other fairy african tales.
That end note about black people dressing up as whatever is a point I've said for awhile.
I really don't understand the idea of "seeing TV characters that look like me"
Maybe because I've always been into animation and I've never felt like spongebob or bugs bunny needed to look like me, but all the same: I've never felt a strong connection to a character because they were Hispanic. I've felt a connection because I found their actions or personality relatable. Sheen from Jimmy neutron being Mexican was only Maybe 5% why I liked him.
And for 6teen, I related much more to Wyatt than jonsey
Sheen was mexican?! Mind blown.
I'm the same way. the whole " I can only relate to characters who look like me " sounds crazy narcissistic.
I'm Italian and i couldn't stand the Luca movie. Whatever representation i got from it was mostly stereotypes that made me cringe. Every character from movies or shows that i liked either had the longest hair, wore pink, or was blonde (im a brunette). I never felt representation for my race, culture, or even for the fact that i wore glasses. Every single girl character with glasses was either nerd or the ugly one, and god forbid she gets a makeover and the glasses are off. As if she could see without them or is automatically able to use contacts.
I never needed representation, i lived fine without it. But now that everyone is screaming "muh representation!" I want to demand to be represented too.

The point isn’t “why would ‘a mermaid’ be black” the point is “why would you change this characters race and then call everyone racist when they don’t like it?” It happened in Avatar when they casted white people to play Sokka and Katara, but now, because it’s the other way around, people wanna act like you can only not like the decision because you’re racist. What if they made Harry Potter Indonesian in the next movie?
I mean Zuko was "white" and they made him Indian by the same token
the point is why tf do you care about a mermaid
I think its slightly different when the character's ethnicity/culture/origin are central to their character. For example Katara is from a inuit like tribe, and all the other characters from the tribe were cast in that aesthetic. It doesn't really make sense for the main representatives of that culture to not accurately represent that. On the other hand there's nothing inherently caucasian about the Little Mermaid. The place is fictional and the fact that the characters are white doesn't contribute to the art at all. Probably means we need more black art that isn't about being black.

I want to know who is complaining about "realism"? Everyone I see complaining about the skin color is complaining about forced diversity, which has been happening for the past half a decade because Hollywood refuses to learn its lesson from Ghostbuster 2016. From what I've seen, the realism argument is always brought up by people defending the movie, as if using it as a strawman specifically so they can debunk it.
I hate that argument the most. They’ll argue “it’s fantasy, it’s not real” while also saying “shows should reflect what the real(modern) world looks like”. I’m done with diversity hires, it’s not like I have to watch it anyway. Though I’ve heard she was picked for her voice, so hope she enjoyed making it.

Disney seems to have forgotten that most of the little girls who want to dress up as princesses immediately go to elsa, and she's fricken nordic. Whenever they say, "Kids need to be able to relate to characters" I'm 100% certain they talking about 30 year old disney kids from the 90's who never grew up and never matured

"The Chinese don't let Women go to wars!"
Huns: Allow us to introduce ourselves.
(But in all seriousness, they actually acknowledge that in the movie. Females are in fact frowned upon as soldiers back then. But the only time they let em into wars is by nursery reasons. And Females are damn good at bringing soldiers back to health, even with the equipment they got. And the Huns actually don't mind Females as warriors, hence Shan yu, being a Hun, not scoffing that Mulan is a Female. He only saw the Soldier from the mountains, the same one who killed his entire clan. That's all he ever saw Mulan as. A Soldier. Nothing more.)

Why'd they do it in the first place? Idc if they did it but it's like why they do it? That's what should be talked about. I mean, I think they're being inclusionary for dollars and erase the founders of Disney racism to rebuild Disney's name for the future, IMO. Am I wrong there, lol?

She was a frog for most of the film though
You do realise that the 'Princess and the Frog' is a reimagining of 'the Frog prince' just like all the Disney princesses except Nala and Merida and not an original, original right? You do know that originally all the Frog prince characters are white right? You do know that Disney raceswapped the main cast to be black in more or less the SAME way as their doing with Ariel (instead Tianas whole character is based on being a for real black person). So if your mad at this Ariel for whatever reason then you should hate Tiana for the same reasons
I’m not emotionally invested in this upcoming movie like how everyone would expect me to. The Little Mermaid remake is going to be another soulless cashgrab that will have instant low ratings by critics for being a live action remake. Seriously, this whole remaking animated movies into live action phase of Disney’s is silly and they need to stop.
I don’t know why everyone’s losing their shit at receiving something that doesn’t really benefit us. I’ve even heard people crying over this movie on reaction channels. I wish Disney had the balls to make movies based on the many African myths, and make them “child friendly” as usual. I only want to see this movie for how uncanny the visuals will look. Setting your movie underwater is whole ‘nother level of uncanny. Like imagine a hyper-realistic crab singing Under the Sea. I’m DYING, I can’t wait to see that shitshow LMAO.
😂💀 OMG I’m dead ass laughing to imaging the realistic crab dancing and singing “under the SEAAAA “🎶 now 😂 💀😭🤣🤣🤣🤣
Low ratings by critics? You mean by audience right? Cause critics love this kind of shit, just look the rating difference from critics to audience in new Star Wars, She-Hulk, and LOTR: Ring of Power..
Everything is a soulless cash grab until it’s something YOU enjoy..I hate that it’s a cash grab mentality like these cooperation ain’t been doing this for years..shit the McDonald’s meals of celebrities were just rehashed meals that were already there..like the sweetie meal it was literally just fries a burger and a smoothie nothing new or limited edition or special jusr reused ..it’s called marketing but y’all don’t realize shit cuz u have no intuition to find out why..just complain..
Let's see...
Lion King live action was disappointing too. No animal pyramid in I Just Can't Wait to be King, watered down Be Prepared...
Then we have Mulan, Dumbo and Pinnochio live action adaptations, which... Bleagh.
I suppose I found Maleficent and Aladdin were decent. Beauty and the Beast was passable.
Roughly a 50% hit rate on these live adaptation shenanigans.
At this point I'm not interested in any more of these.
@@irvancrocs1753 for the remakes both ways can happen but it depends on if the film becomes strkingly similar to the original where nostalgia baiting is clearly visible. Lion king, aladdin and any remake after that besides Mulan share this like aladdin is 57% critic but 94% audience lion king is pretty similar with 52% critic and 88% audience.
I'm just waiting for someone to start pointing out the hypocrisy of calling out people upset that this fictional character has been race swapped while using the examples of other characters being race swapped after years of bitching and moaning about race swapping the characters they're using as examples of "well y'all did it first"... Like.. either it's acceptable or it's not. Don't say it's not acceptable when it's one way but then it's acceptable and you're racist when it's another.
And let's not pretend we don't know how this movie is gonna turn out. Disney's gonna do something to fuck up the movie and lose what made the original work so well (Lion King's animated animals that can convey emotion, Pinnoccio learning about behaving like a jackass, Mulan losing her cleverness and resourcefulness, etc., etc.) and they're going to hide from the all but inevitable bad reviews that will come - because Disney can't make a good live action remake for the life of them - and dismiss any people bitching about it as racist.
It's possible it'll be good. But I'm not going to hold my breath.
What makes me upset about this whole thing is this: I used to watch The Little Mermaid TV show and there was an ORIGINAL "POC" character (who was also deaf) named Gabriella. I loved that character. I am "white". I never forgot about her. Why couldn't they make a film with her? I wasn't pissed because a mermaid was "black". I was pissed because Ariel (an already existing character) was made "black". What if we made an already existing "black" character "white"? Wouldn't be too cool, would it? I have no problem making mermaids whatever color you want; they're not even real. Just don't change an already existing character to push representation. Make a new character who is interesting, like they did back in that The Little Mermaid TV show.
Wake me up when we have an original black character and not an old character just being colored black 😴
Damn we need more real talks like this from Griffy
Minus the baseless racism accusations.
the crab and fish are somehow worse than the blatant pandering
This man has never lied.
I’ve always said that 90% of the time (there are a few little exceptions) I don’t care how a person who plays a role looks. The only thing I care about is them being the best pick for the movie/show.
One thing I dislike, however, is forced diversity. Diversity to me is like a “selfless” deed. Both are often done so a company can seem morally superior when, in reality, they are quite the opposite.
At least someone gets it.
Businesses such as Disney have ulterior motives doing it. It's disingenuous. On top of that, they use those actors as a shield. They make them willingly suffer for their goals ($$$ that is). They don't give a single f*ck. Can we please stop with that shyte?
It isn't forced diversity. We live in a diverse world not a white world get over it.
Well that’s BS. A lot of times the best pick for a certain movie/show is someone who looks a certain way
@@bayoumuddah Yeah... entirely missing the point here. But hey, can't say I'm surprised...

I agree.
Look at the Book of Eli. One of my favorite movies, main character is original and black. His skin color isn’t even brought up, it’s not apart of the story because the color of his skin DOESN’T MATTER.
A black Ariel was clearly made because of the fact that she’s black, not if she’s a good actress or not. I agree. It’s exploiting diversity and little kids and calling it “representation”.
If I was an employer, I’d hire based on skills and experience or education. Skin color doesn’t matter, cultural background doesn’t matter. Now we have pilots being hired because of their skin, not if they can fly a plane good.

Im glad we have people in our community like Griffy who are actually brave enough to speak out and have a different opinion.
