Great breakdown of the basics. This video was a game changer for me when I first got interested in developing my technique and one I've watched back several times for the subtle cues. Thank you Iain!
Great video. I'd like to see one about the actual "catching" of the wave and mistakes beginners make. I spend a majority of my time getting launched down the face of the wave. How do you get the speed to out run the wave?
Iain Campbell also you got to turn left or right into the barrel also if you don’t allready have fins your should get some I suggest, custom x, vipers, kicks, or ally swim fins
I'm new to this game but Since watching and studying this stuff and boogin 2 years now some things start to hit the sweetspot. Using your eyes is most important, timing is next crucial thing. Weight transfer to the sides and upperbody movement up and down and front to back where big gamechangers for me this summer in France when the surf got slightly bigger. Felt the most control was in the rails and a result of things written above were applied in some kind of way. And staccato movement were a no, smooth connections of changes in movement on the board had the best results. Still heaps and heaps to learn (like when to and what and what to not) so need to get better to have even more fun and applie more techniques in small waves. You and a surtain mr. Hardy made my holidays lots of more fun. Thanks lots and lots!
Awesome to hear your story and picking up on all of those small points that make a huge difference. Focusing on timing and head movements are the biggest game changer for sure. Good luck on your journey and welcome to the channel 🤙🏼🤙🏼
@@iaincampbell_ Yo long distance coach! Nice to know, I noticed in smaller surf some people leaned forward and stayed very low while taking of. Where I stayed, France, the waveperiod was short and the opposite of a peeling wave. Very forgiving in taking a left or a right but short rides, helas. So still a bit figuring out what to train in small short waves...
I'm about to turn 51 next month and last 2 months have been hitting the beach with my bodyboard after a 30 some odd year break from the beach. These basic tips I will be implementing tomorrow at Newport Beach California..Thanks.
Thank you so much! Your video helped me improve my technique and now I'm able to catch many more waves and ride them more effectively than before. Greetings from Waikiki Beach, where I moved just for the sake of the Ocean.
Thanks Lain for a really clear instructions on body and hand position. Watch the video yesterday and went out twice today in my beach break in Canoa, Ecuador. Getting my body forward was a huge break through and had some of my best turns and was so much faster. Would like to see a good video on paddling going out through the surf, paddling for position and paddling to catch the wave. I’m sure there are differences, but would like to see a video showing these paddling techniques...
Very cool. Glad it’s helping you and you going somewhere. Makes me so happy to hear I can help through these videos. I like the idea of paddling techniques. Will try and think of how to get that in a video.

Sure will get to doing all of those. I will try to make the basic steps into timing but it’s hard to teach that. Easier if you find timing out yourself.
Love your content dude. I think it'd be awesome to help with some videos on how to bodyboard in bigger surf. What would be a way to remain stable and gauge appropriate speed when wanting to catch a bigger wave? And how can you avoid getting gassed when paddling out? What's the safest way to ride a bigger wave securely? How do you maintain stability when dropping in late on a bigger wave? How do you stay safe in reef bottom surf when the surf is pretty heavy? What do you do when you get caught on the inside and you're gassed, what's the best response to stay safe? What do you do when you find yourself in just inches of water above reef and sea urchins? All questions I've had in literally those exact moments. I always found a way out and have my own methods, would love to watch a video with your take.
Wow that’s a lot of information. Some of those I can’t answer unfortunately. I would love to but it’s all about what the waves are like, your skill level and experience. If you’re getting gassed in a paddle out you need to find the best way to get out. There is a lot more questions about that but I can try answer more another time. That’s a lot of information that mostly comes down to experience with what you have asked. My main tip would be “If in doubt, don’t paddle out!”
Hi Iain...regarding body position when kicking for a wave without using arm paddling is your hips all the way in the water like at 4:46 in the vid?...how is your site coming along? thanks
Hi. No you need to have your body centred on the board and your weight pushing forward in order to get the nose down and get you onto the waves. Website should be up and running early next week. Hoping it will all be okay with no issues.

Also it would be great to do a video on how to read the wave while you're on it. How far down the wave do you look? Hi iain. Could you do a video on how to choose and use fins properly? Im really struggling with finding a fin that doesnt feel like I've got 2 kettlebells strapped to my ankles. or are my legs just weak?
I could definitely do something like that but just to let you know my opinion is going to be a bit bias as I am working closely with churchills. I think all fins are going to be a bit heavy but it’s all about finding the comfort in the fins and making sure they feel good on your feet.
This is a HEAVY content video for bodyboarders out there. Althoguh i would break point 2 3 and 4 into one. and substitute them for mindset. This last one although may not seem import it might the most critical og them 3
Super nice video bru!!! I find it very helpful because sometimes I forget the basics, go onto auto pilot and mes up badly. Like I suggested before, I think the duck dive should be done next, because the duck dive is an essential skill to have even before using these basic tips. You have to reach the back line first before you're able to catch a wave.
Man I really hope 662mob gets your red board back in stock, not only is it a sick colorway I appreciate you making these vids so I want to show my support
Just come back from Newquay and I caught some awesome waves at Fistral. Just watched your video, and glad I have been doing some of it right. I have definitely caught the bug after a few trips to Cornwall. I would love to go to Boardmasters one day. 🤙🤙😊
Any tips for surfing big steep waves with choppy faces. I've bottom turned off some biguns and set my line only to hit some chop which splashes over the front of the board slowing me right down so I didn't make the section. Pretty gnarly sometimes. I just got a smaller board more suited to my size and weight with much less planing surface area and slightly narrower nose and more flex hoping this will help drive through/over the chop better next time. Would you flex the board (lift the nose) to get over chop? Or is there some other trick or should the right board just deal with it? On my bigger board I would have to position myself quite far back on take off on these big waves because of this and because I would air drop a lot of the time, but just recently heard that spreading your legs on take off can help stick you to the face. Haven't had a chance to try that out yet or see if the smaller board drives through better in those conditions. It definitely has nicer flex and projection, generating more speed off the bottom turn as well as being easier to turn and throw into moves. I surf in the UK and perfect, clean offshore days are not frequent so I need a way to deal with the chop stop scenario if the smaller board doesn't sort it out on its own. One last thing related to barrel riding is I've heard Andre Botha saying he uses his outside leg to slow down and speed up by dropping it in the water or lifitng it. The inside one stays put to help keep the line like a skeg. At least that's how I interpret it. I've always lifted/dropped both legs and when I really want to slow down I'll dig my knees in. Seems to work well to drag me back onto the foamball in smaller stuff at least. What's your preference? Is fin choice important? I've noticed they often have lips or rails on the outside top edges, I imagine to help slice into the wave face and act as a skeg... Cheers
Hi. Sorry I missed this comment so just getting to it now. Board size is going to help a lot with choppy conditions. My suggestion is find something that feels good and stick with it. To get around the chops you want a board with flex that will take the initial impact but can still help pick up speed quick. When it come to dropping legs, yes the spread legs will help and give you a lot of control to do moves. The last part about inside and outside legs is that you are completely right by digging the knee and leg it will slow you down and allow for you to lift it to get speed. Only thing with either having you leg in the water or out is the control of the board. If you don’t have rail control that is going to be very hard to control with no legs in the water. Hope this helps and makes sense.
@@iaincampbell_ Thanks for the reply. I haven't been out in a while - British summer and lockdown combined - but looking forward to trying some of this stuff out! 🌊
Awesome video Iain! good to see video's like this to help people out. Do you dropknee much? I've been try to master dropknee for awhile now but struggle a lot. I'd love to see an in-depth video on how to dropknee as I struggle a lot holding my rail on steep waves as I seem to slide out.
Hey man, unfortunately I have slowed my riding of DK right down to a minimal but maybe I can find some time to make a video on how to keep your rail that may help...
Hey Iain...Great info...if going left, you mention to slide hips to left rail...do you put lots of hip pressure there along with pressure on left elbow?...I dont think I'm too mindful of placing hip pressure...any insight would be appreciated...thanks
So it’s more the position of your legs in the water. The idea is to get the weight on the back corner of the board so by pulling up on the outside rail, digging the elbow in and shifting the weight to your hips and using your fins to hold you in the face, then the bottom turn becomes effective.
Lost some balance because of vestibular damage to my left ear at age 69 while trying to master the wavestorm type boards while living in PR 3 years, started falling alot, thinking boogie boarding might be better option to be able to get back in the water???
It's great to have advice from a rider of your level ! Like me, I think a lot of riders can't perform right or left on all the moves. So if you could explain how to make up for these shortcomings it would be cool. Obviously the reverse air is a maneuver that I would like to learn. Kisses an thank you Iain :D
Hi Victor. All you have to remember is that what ever you did on the left to perform a move needs to be mirrored to perform it on the right. Once you understand these basic moves on the board the rest should work but it takes time. So enjoy the experience and keep trying it.
@@iaincampbell_ Yeah but you know, it's like i'm playing football with my left foot while I'm right-handed. That really depends on the moves, I'll prefer some on the right and others on the left...
hey bro, can you make a video of the board itself? Like the different type of boards for different skill level riders, the purpose for those boards and give us your recommendation. I had a cheap board that i used for a few years until it started bubbled on me. i have to get a new board, so i bought it (CustomX board) because of the color and expensive price tag, but i didn't know what i was buying or what that board supposed to build for. if you could make a video explaining different type of boards that would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Iain. I’m never quite sure how to position my feet and legs while going across the face of the wave - should I dig the inside fin into the face of the wave? Or let both my legs and fins flap around? Sometimes when they flap around on steep waves I feel it puts my body off balance. That’s my idea for a video! Thanks.
Hi Michael. It all depends on your control of the tail. If it’s a steep wave you’re going to have to use your legs a lot. If it is a flatter wave then the legs are as important.
Hey Iain. Can you duck dive under any wave size with no problem? Or is there a certain size you just cant get under? If yes what size is that? And what do you do then?
Hi Trevor. Nothing special except when it comes to steep waves. That’s when you would use your knees a bit more. Fins are there to act as rudders and to form the end of the trail your board is making.
Great vidéo thanks for your tips ! I just have two question, when waves going big i often nose dive and i don't know how to avoid it and when i'm trying to take off i often feel like i haven't enough speed so how to take off with more speed or how to use my fins more efficienly ?
Okay so the nose dive can be one of two things, boards not stiff enough or you’re too far forward when you take off on steeper waves. To get more speed at the start you need to paddle harder. A lot harder than you are now. That’s the only way. Get a technique that works for you. We are all different.
@@iaincampbell_ okay thanks a lot Iain for your fast answer my core's board is a pp core so i think it's my fault 😂 thanks again for giving some of your time to noobs like me i will apply your advises
a few tips for dk I can give, 1. Go home and put your board down and your fins on and just practice the pop up over and over. it sounds kooky but it seriously helps a lot. 2. when you pop up make sure you are on your back knee first. for your front foot, you are going to want to almost scoop your fin out around the rail instead of dragging it up the board. 3. when your doing a bottom turn sometimes it helps to drag your hand in the face to help stability and speed control. when you want to turn i would rail grab at first and then once you get the feel of turning eventually do it without the rail grab. Hope this helps, it’s not too detailed. I was thinking of making a video on it.
Hey Ian...thank you from this beginner...if we take off at an angle do we shift our weight to inside rail and lifting nose immediately or more neutral weight distribution?...thanks
All depends how steep the wave is and what it makes you do... sometimes it’s necessary to shift weight but other times it’s more just neutral. Try both in different situations.
In the wave, your hips are always on the board for more control and speed?? I watch your videos and you do not pick them up from the board, thanx for the tips!
Just depends on the situation. If you are gaining speed then having them a little out the water is a good idea but for the most part keeping them in will give you a more solid base to drive off.

I think all fins are going to be a bit heavy but it’s all about finding the comfort in the fins and making sure they feel good on your feet.
great vid Lain ,,,thanks for the tips !
No worries. Hope it helps 🤙🏼
Thanks for the help!
This is a HEAVY content video for bodyboarders out there. Althoguh i would break point 2 3 and 4 into one. and substitute them for mindset. This last one although may not seem import it might the most critical og them 3
Appreciate the comment. Trying to break every aspect of bodyboarding down through my tutorial videos. Hope you enjoy them.
That video will be coming soon. Hopefully in the next few months.
Man I really hope 662mob gets your red board back in stock, not only is it a sick colorway I appreciate you making these vids so I want to show my support
Thanks man. Sure next season will have a lot of stock and colours in store. Appreciate the support. 🤙🏼
Thanks bro. I just subscribed. Thanks for your content bro.
Appreciate it.
Thanks heaps for the videos mate! Would love to see one for the dropknee 🙏🏻
It’s coming for sure bru. Later in the year. Need to get my knee back in the right form before I can dropknee again.
Solid bro. Could you talk about your weight distribution going into a spin. Cheers!
Will do that when I get around to spins in the next couple weeks.
Seu canal é ótimo obrigado pelas dicas
Wow fresh video !
Your a legend Iain, primo vid. Would love some tips on spins. Chur bro!! 🤙🏽
Just come back from Newquay and I caught some awesome waves at Fistral. Just watched your video, and glad I have been doing some of it right. I have definitely caught the bug after a few trips to Cornwall. I would love to go to Boardmasters one day. 🤙🤙😊
So awesome to hear this. Welcome to the channel and hopefully I can get out to the UK and join in on some fun!
Grande Campbell! Cumprimentos from 🇵🇹
🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks the 90 degree angle tip was really helpful
Great video !
Thanks so much 🤙🏼
Any tips for surfing big steep waves with choppy faces.
@@iaincampbell_
That explanation makes a ton of sense now...will try out...thank you!
No problem at all!
Awesome vid as always 🤙🏽
Lost some balance because of vestibular damage to my left ear at age 69 while trying to master the wavestorm type boards while living in PR 3 years, started falling alot, thinking boogie boarding might be better option to be able to get back in the water???
For sure it is! Better for your balance and possibly safer for you too!
Ciao Iain. Grazie.
Nice tips mate! 👍👍
You just got to keep trying. It gets more natural the more you do it!
Thanks really helped😃
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Going to Hawaii soon. Thank you very much. I don’t feel comfortable surfing and bodyboarding in my opinion is funner.
Agreed. Get on the boogie bru 🤙🏼
Thank you for this video We need more educational videos please 🙏
They are coming up soon.
@@iaincampbell_ thank you bro 🙏❤
So good video bro!! Is really helfull. Good luck in this season
hey bro, can you make a video of the board itself? Like the different type of boards for different skill level riders, the purpose for those boards and give us your recommendation. I had a cheap board that i used for a few years until it started bubbled on me. i have to get a new board, so i bought it (CustomX board) because of the color and expensive price tag, but i didn't know what i was buying or what that board supposed to build for. if you could make a video explaining different type of boards that would be greatly appreciated.
Can try do that. I have spoken about boards in past video when I show my boards. If there is anything really specific let me know. 🤙🏼
really helpful, thank you!
🤙🏼
Thank you brother 👍👍
No problem 👍
@@iaincampbell_ thanks - I was just recently recommended to check out your videos by Shambles McGoldrick over here in Ireland.
Epic to hear that. Shambles is a legend! I must get over there sometime and get some waves with you guys. Hopefully soon man.
As someone that's relatively new to bodyboarding, what size waves should i be practicing on?
Anything that you are comfortable and confident in!
Hey Iain. Can you duck dive under any wave size with no problem? Or is there a certain size you just cant get under? If yes what size is that? And what do you do then?
Hi Jack. I am planning a duck diving video and will explain it all in there. Should come up in the next few months for sure. 🤙🏼
Thanks Ian. Great vid. Do you do anything special with your feet/fins when executing the bottom turn for better control?
@@thsukumotdp8909 its not so much the core but actually the age of the board. The core should stay rigid until its left in the sun or ridden alot...
@@iaincampbell_ oh okay well i have it since 2 month but what is the life time of a bodyboard ?
@@thsukumotdp8909 a life time is about 2/3 years on a normal person... for me its about 3-6 months, haha. but then its your positioning on the board.
Great vid bro - Very detailed. How about a DK tutorial next?? Chur!!
we may have to get some help for that one.... haha
Iain shreds on the knee, I've seen him on the world stage (:-)
One L.
a few tips for dk I can give,
Great video again always pick up tips everytime i watch your videos thanks again. Ps do you ever get to England.?
Hi Nigel.
Thanks. And no I have never been and don’t really know whether I would come through there anytime soon. But maybe that needs to change.
Nice vid bru! Could you do one with proper warm up exercises? Tkx
For sure. It’s all coming soon. 🤙🏼
Very helpful thanks!
Do you have any tips on getting comfortable on lefts and rights? I'm very comfortable on a right but feel so out of control on lefts...
Well there is only one way and that’s to ride more lefts. I know this seems a bit ridiculous man but at the same time it’s the only way to do it.
Hi could you tell me where do I looking for while I’m taking off, wave face? Shore? I’m so confused!
Well you have to look down the wave. Otherwise you don’t know what’s coming you way.
Thank you 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Hey Ian...thank you from this beginner...if we take off at an angle do we shift our weight to inside rail and lifting nose immediately or more neutral weight distribution?...thanks
All depends how steep the wave is and what it makes you do... sometimes it’s necessary to shift weight but other times it’s more just neutral. Try both in different situations.
Thank you so much
Which wave do you like best:
Left or right?
And sick vid will definitely head down to beach now and go try those tips
I like lefts best but I’m happy to go right too 😉🙌🏼
In the wave, your hips are always on the board for more control and speed?? I watch your videos and you do not pick them up from the board, thanx for the tips!
That’s correct. It’s mainly for control. That’s where you get all the drive from and keep the board in the water. 🤙🏼
Sick vid Iain, what kind of angle should my arm be at when I'm just paddling around normally?
Maybe a little more than 90. Rather focus on your body being centred over your board. That will help.
@@iaincampbell_ Rad. Thanks heaps man. Can't wait for more content. :)
I’m about to go bodyboarding you recommend any specific bodyboards
These are the only boards I recommend.

Thanks Dude!!
Thx mate!

What about leg position Iain? Feet in the water or out for bottom turn/trim?
Feet in the water will help you to keep your line. But you want you legs to be straight for down the line speed!
What about your legs do you left them up. Leave one down for the side your turning?
Just depends on the situation. If you are gaining speed then having them a little out the water is a good idea but for the most part keeping them in will give you a more solid base to drive off.
