Regarding the IT ticket one, the IT manager should have seen those tickets come in, go to his boss and make the case. Op needed that data and he followed official process. If the worker bees had to work OT, then that’s managements failure. Not OP being a dick.

I completely disagree with the calling the guy a jerk for "overworking" the IT staff. He tried to make the issue easy for everyone, was denied, and his job performance, and the job performance of others in sales were likely suffering for it. The guy could have faced repercussions for failing to plan appropriately to get the data he needs for each sprint. It sucks that people under the head of IT had to suffer for it, but they had to suffer because their boss was a jerk, not because OP was. Their boss could have seen the volume, addressed it with OP at the start of the sprint, and had given him access. This was in no way on OP, what were they to do, face possibly losing their job or being thought incompetent because their reports weren't timely? No way.

Some businesses work under strict data security and privacy policies, so they're reluctant to hand out access to their network to just anyone, even if they're a co-worker in a different branch or another contracted company. Understandable if it contains a lot of private or classified information and it's requested by a party that isn't 100% trusted to not leak it through an unsecured network or intentional doxing, but if it doesn't fall under those criteria then there's no reason for withholding the data access other than egoism.

I went into a big red ‘S’ store, the deli used this exact same process, well I knew the workers on duty, one of the managers, came over and went nuts at the staff for not using the ticket system. So they stood there and slowly clicked over the system in front of them, it took nearly 10 minutes, customers were starting to have to wait, but they advanced right through the count, slowly reloaded the tickets and started all over again. The manager just turned tail and walk off, the customers all burst out laughing at the manager. The staff apologised for the delay, in no time the customers were all served and everyone that day had a funny story to tell.

They have that number system at our local DMV. So the last time at the DMV was my first time there and I had no idea what to do. I eventually notice the ticket slips, grab one, big sigh realizing I'm going to be here for awhile. The counter on the wall is serving number 92 (or something of the sort) my number was in the 120s. So I grab a seat, a guy I was sitting next to was exhibiting signs of impatience: shaking legs, looking at his watch, clearing his throat. It was a sight to behold. At one point he got up stormed over to the counter and started in on the lady asking how long it was going to take he has been here for hours blah, blah, blah. He just wanted to renew his license. She calmly tells him, "sir this isn't the area where you renew your license. The area you need is over in that department which you will need a new number for. The guy was pissed. He went over to the renewal area and started in on them...he eventually ended his rant asking if he would enough time to run out to his car to grab his phone. The lady said she didn't see why not. As soon as the guy left, she asked over the speaker if anyone was there to just renew their license. I looked around-no one stood up so I went over. The guy came back and saw me in the booth awaiting for snap of the camera. The guy just turned around and left. While finishing up, she tells me that people get confused all the time and the number system is actually for a different part of the DMV. I believe they have since remolded.

Nah, not letting OP into the database is perfectly ground for what he did. Ultimatly the workers suffer from the Boss' F- up. And then if any of them get sick of it and quit, then that is ALSO The Boss' F- up. All OP did was light the fuse. Not the A-Hole.

Before my husband went into law enforcement, he worked in the trades.
He was putting in a phone system for Pillsbury in St. Paul.
He needed some very specific equipment that he kept asking for someone to deliver to him.
After hours of continued silence, he finally got a call out to all of the employees, and asked them if they realized this equipment was for their Pillsbury account?
Holy cow did that equipment, and then some, get there quickly! 😂

For the IT story, OP did go through the official channel, and was denied. One would.assume after the first batch of 400 came through, maybe the decision should have been reevaluated, it wasn't until the next spring came that the IT manager finally grasped what was happening And why.

    Walked in with an urn.
"Here's my late husband. I'll be back to pick him up in ten minutes. He's really craving a jelly doughnut today so I'm off to the coffee shop."
So what if he was buried? The _bank_ doesn't know that.

Grandma: "my husband died. I'd like to close his account."
Bank: "you'll need to raise him from the dead to do that, ma'am."
Another identical last story--account holder died, their son needed to handle some fee details with it, bank refused("it's in your dad's name, only he can do it"), son kept repeating he died, they refused...many details later, the son ended up bringing the urn w/ dad's ashes into the bank as proof that account holder could not personally do it. The bank pulled a "surprised Pikachu face" & called security. The son explained "they refused to let me handle the account, so here's my dad."

My dad died, widowing my mother, in a state without marital community property. After he died, mom found a credit card in his name only that she didn't know about. Since it was in his name, and not hers, and there was no community property in that state, she never made any payments.
Eventually, she started getting calls from the issuing bank. She said that she would not be paying it. They informed her that if she didn't, it could have a severe adverse effect on HIS credit. She said, " That's fine. He doesn't need a credit score anymore!" and then hung up. They haven't bothered her since.

7:12 this was likely the only way OP could’ve gotten the message across though. Does the head of IT in this story sound like the kind of guy who would see reason in this circumstance? Probably not, given that OP stated the reason they needed the access in the first place and was still told “no, ONLY IT can have access”. Plus, to OP’s credit, they didn’t fully go through with it, they made the offer again to just have access themselves and it was given to them. Plus, judging by the IT head’s sudden change of tune, I’m guessing his workers weren’t the *only* ones who were on the receiving end of the consequences of his decision.

Refused even to have a pack of playing cards in the house because cards were used for gambling. Neither of them would have accepted winnings from anyone even if it meant bankruptcy not to accept. They were truly a couple who practiced their faith.

Something similar to the last story happened to me when my grandma died. Some charity organization continued sending donation requests to her apartment, which I had taken over. When they got a little bit pushy, I wrote them the following letter:
    "Dear X,
my grandmother's address recently changed, so the donation request letters you're sending cannot reach her.
Her new address is grave field IX, location G4 at the local cemetary. I would not expect an answer, as being dead is a full-time job and she is very busy.
    Best regards,

What REALLY would have been sweet, SWEET justice, is if Karen never actually picked a ticket. Then, while calling each number individually, she would have skipping over Karen and going straight to OP because she didn't have a number. Then OP could have gotten involved in the glorious event, "sampling" each and every piece of deli meat before finally making the order and forcing Karen to pull a ticket and wait her turn.

The second story about the database... That's a too "high and mighty" IT dept. They should've been able to do an ETL to give OP access to a copy of the needed data in say a separate small server running Postgres. That will take just like 3-4 days of work and testing, and all will be well. The ETL can be scheduled to run at low load times. Saves everyone the headache of having to keep doing queries and responding to the data request tickets. Plus also keep data not needed by OP safe ('need to know' and all such)

  • @MsMeteorShower

Wrong take on the second story, Rslash. OP DID meet with IT, and they refused to budge. OP did things the way he was supposed to, and if the IT department was forced to work overtime, that's on their director and company policy, not OP.
