    Some Cello playing tips:
-Put your knees below the little nook (so it isn't digging into the sides of your knees) and adjust the endpin accordingly
-To have a straight bow, put your other hand on the end of the bow and just play an open string (so your arm can get used to the feeling of having a straight bow)
-In order to not hear harmonics on the C-string, make sure you press down on the bow harder so the string will ring (haha that rhymes)
-To hold the bow, put your thumb in the nook and put your ring finger on the silver bit
-When bowing, try not to use your entire arm, but instead just your forearm and wrist.
I hope this helps you, Dodie!

Something that really helped me when I started was that I would try to find the "sweet spot" on the string where it would sound best by trying to angle the bow, go down and up on the string, etc. The other thing to mention is that when you first start it will be frustrating because you know what you want, but you can't so patience is key because I so many times wanted to quit because I just couldn't make it sound right. Last but not least I want to say hi other person who plays cello you're cool

when u do pizz don’t do it so close to the bridge :)) stay higher on the finger board, and also beware of blisters ! don’t practice it too much at first. u wanna build calluses. AND DONT TOUCH THE BOW HAIRS. and make sure you loosen it every time after practicing so it doesn’t turn into a boring straight stick :)

    Lyrics:
Summer lovin' had me a blast
    Summer lovin' happened so fast
I met a girl crazy for me
Met a boy cute as can be
    Summer days driftin' away
To ah, oh, those summer nights
    Uh well-a well-a well-a huh!
Tell me more, tell me more
    Did you get very far?
Tell me more, tell me more
Like does he have a car?
    Uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh
She swam by me, she got a cramp
He ran by me, got my suit damp
I saved her life, she nearly drowned
    He showed off, splashing around
    Summer sun, something's begun
But ah, oh, those summer nights
    Uh well-a well-a well-a huh!
Tell me more, tell me more
Was it love at first sight?
Tell me more, tell me more
Did she put up a fight?
    ...
It turned colder, that's where it ends
So I told her we'd still be friends
Then we made our true love vow
    Wonder what she's doing now
Summer dreams ripped at the seams
    But oh, those summer nights...
Tell me more, tell me more...

been playing cello since i was nine! just some tips that helped me a lot:
    - put some tape or stickers on the fingerboard to help you remember where to place your fingers. after a while it just becomes muscle memory and you can take the stickers off
    - don’t get too tense! i’m dealing with the beginnings of tendinitis because i used to press down so hard on the strings. it’s getting better, but you definitely want to avoid it!
    - use gravity to your advantage. in pushing down the strings, shifting, and using the bow
    - practice a LOT in first position (first finger on the note of B on the A string). it’s actually a more difficult position, but for most cellists it comes naturally because that’s what we learned to play in and spend the most time on.
    - don’t try to use vibrato right away! for now, focus more on keeping in tune and finding a rich sound
    - speaking of rich sound, try to keep the bow perpendicular to the strings. it’s easy to get lazy (or too tense) and let the bow get all out of line, and that’s what causes a lot of squeaking and groaning
    - be confident! the cello is one of my favorite instruments because it’s so responsive to the person playing it. it basically becomes a reflection of you, and every emotion and thought you put into it will show through your playing. don’t be afraid of your cello, and it won’t be afraid of you
good luck dodie! i can’t wait to see where you take this! every musical endeavor you take always seems to work out amazingly, so i’m sure this one will too

Celloooooo! :) I'd recommend sitting in a chair with a solid edge (and no arms), so that positioning the cello is easier. Playing while sitting on a bed or poofy chair is super difficult. I usually sit right on the edge of the chair, to be extra braced, but some people sit farther back, probably using their legs more to keep from sliding backward.

    HelLo dodie,
i am a first year music student and have been playing the cello since i was 8 and have played in several orchestras, quartets, pit bands, et cEtera. here are some helpful cello tips and tricks which you Do need because i know you recognise you’re not amazing at everything first try and practicing wrong initially will only lead to bigger problems down the line:
-have a lesson with someone because it’s easier to fix things 1-1
-sit on a proper chair with your thighs parallel to the ground
-the cello should be a lot less upright than it is here
-a good measure for how much spike to have out is to stand up with your cello and have the scroll (top of the cello) at nose height
-sit on that normal chair u prepared earlier
-bowing!! your bow should be straight, perpendicular to the strings
-rosin that bow but not too much
-bow hold is tricky, but you’re holding the bow more like a violinist would and therefore you won’t have the correct hold to play with the force/angle the cello needs
-practice on open strings making your bow go straight
-practice making a nice, whole, round sound on open strings
-you will have to play with more bow pressure than you think otherwise you get those airy ‘harmonic’ sounds
-Fingers!! when done right, this will hurt initially as you build up the calluses on your fingers, as you have to press quite hard with your left hand fingers to produce notes
-you were quite in tune but get a teacher to put stickers where your fingers need to go - after a while it just becomes muscle memory and you no longer need them
-D/G/C major are all good scales to initially practice as they all have open strings
-there are plenty of beginners books out there for this
    -practice first position, practice scales
    -save vibrato for later
-save double stops!! learn how to play on one string first not two
    -practice practice practice!!
playing an instrument isn’t easy, it’s ugly and frustrating and difficult and practice is the most important thing! this isn’t supposed to be a dig it’s literally just some helpful advice from one cellist to another

I didn't want to do much today.
But I got up and went on my way.
I cleaned the bathroom and browsed the net
I did my hair and then went and met
a friend for lunch, had a lovely time
went and saw A Quiet Place, and then felt much more inclined
to go visit my grandmother, to share a bit of me
to catch up on the good, and sidestep the melancholy.
I came home and started cooking
then finally sat down and began looking
at my subscription box for the first time today
happily seeing your name in the display.
I love the cello, and I appreciate you
for the shit you deal with, and your strength to push through.
I'd say, "despite your weakness..." but that'd be a lie
because it's because of them, that I'm still subscribed--
Your music, your art, your multifaceted expression
It makes me want to create
it ignites the love for art itself
and dampens the voice that's always whispering, "Wait."
Your calm voice and chipper excitement brought me joy today. Thanks, dodie. I'm really looking forward to your LP. Cheers.

as a cellist this is actually really good wow wow wow!!!!!
for one thing try to use your wrist more than anything while you’re bowing. and as for holding the bow my old teacher called it a “banana” thumb so you basically just stick your thumb into the little curvy bit and curve your thumb like a banana? that doesn’t sound v clear but it actually feels super natural when you get the hang of it.
you’re actually v good though for such a beginner. and you already know several positions too so you basically have it down pat. keep practicing and eventually it’ll be so easy to you ❤️❤️

I've started playing the cello at 22 and never regretted it. You'll be able to play songs sooner than you think. Of course you're not doing everything right when you're playing it for the very first time, but how could you possibly know all that without any input, and there is so much time to figure all that out. I just love seeing you be so enthusiastic about it, it really warms my heart. You will have so much fun with this instrument! The only advice I would give you is to always remember that everything that seems super hard to you in the beginning will come to you so easily soon enough. I really struggled to hold the bow right when I started playing the cello and don't have any issues with that now.

I'm a cellist and I've got to say... that was really good for even me, who has been playing for 5 years now. I'm probably a bit late to the party, but just some tips/tricks I thought of in the moment:
-Make sure the cello touches just a bit below your collar bone. It seems like you're holding it a bit low.
-Add tapes on to your cello so you know where to place your fingers. This helps a ton in the matter of staying in tune.
-Start with easy songs. Instead of using muscle memory to play the song, get muscle memory to play the notes and styles, so you'll learn pieces faster.
Hope some of these help! Amazing playing for not just a beginner, I'd be proud of me doing that.

Quick tip: don't touch that empty space between the bridge and the fingerboard, the oils from your hand will make it harder for the bow to stick and vibrate the string.

Some tips! (I'm primarily a bassist but I know stuff about cello as well)
-Keep your bow perpendicular to the strings. I know it's hard to concentrate on, but it's important that you bow in a straight line
-Don't use vibrato right away, try and focus more on notation and accuracy
-Speaking of accurate notes, ask Sophie(? Sofie?) to put tapes on for the different positions, it usually helps people
-I couldn't see your bow very well, but make sure not to overtighten it. The wood shouldn't be in a straight line, it should have a slight curve downwards in order to prevent too much tension
That's all I can think of right now. Enjoy!! I love the cello! Just practice a lot, you're already on a good track!

    • @inesdennehy6895
      @inesdennehy6895 6 лет назад

One more tip (from a violinist): the hair of the bow should not be towards you. That is, don't turn the bow towards the bridge, it should be either perpendicular to the strings (with all the hair touching the strings), or if you want to play softer maybe try to turn the bow (just a bit) towards you so not all the hair is touching the string.
Otherwise it was an amazing attempt for being your first day playing the cello, i'm sure you'll progress a lot in no time :)

    • @JustabitofEmz
      @JustabitofEmz 6 лет назад

      Another violinist here!:
Ines ^ I think you mean if playing softer tilt it away* from you! Easy typo hehe.
Definitely save vibrato to try later on... although it's looking good, intonation and bowing are top things at the moment!
If you do get tapes put on, try not to rely on them too much! I learnt without tapes because my teacher doesn't like them!
Don't forget to rosin your bow (you didn't in the video but who knows...) because otherwise it will make a scratchy sound on the strings which means it won't sound great! My teacher used to always remind us to "feed" our bows and clean our violins before we put them away in their cases (put them "back to bed"). It's a really nice reminder to look after your instrument and also feeding your bow means it doesn't get hangry and so will sound nicer when you play!
I'm very jealous of your current skills! It took me over a year to be allowed to put my index finger down on the string!
Have fun and I'm dead proud that you've joined the best section in the orchestra!!! xoxox

    • @inesdennehy6895
      @inesdennehy6895 6 лет назад

Inés Dennehy that is mostly used for advanced players in my experience. When you have learned the cello you can experiment with how you hold your bow and what sound suits you best but that depends on the cellist, their instrument, and your teacher. Some teachers swear by tilting your bow and others are really indifferent, but regardless most of the time that’s a skill that’s developed later - at least in my experience
