MANOR LORDS could be one of the all time GREATEST Medieval Sims it just needs...

  • My thoughts on the early access release of the incredible new survival town building and medieval combat games - Manor Lords. And how this game is just a little push away from potentially becoming one of the giants of the medieval sim genre. I've love to see it get there and become part of my list of favorite story-telling games!

You can see in the video that there was a little taste of that story telling and politics that I want to see from the game - so the seeds are there to grow!
(Talking about the lord hiring a bunch of mercenaries that abandoned the field during the rainstorms, him trying to bribe me to not take advantage of that fact and the battle that followed to take that land when I ignored his offer).

The game looks great but lacks one thing, an announcer that says "Wood Needed" every time I run out of woood.

Or at least *some* sort of alerts for numerous things which, frankly, are often lost in the many moving parts of the game. ='[.]'=

Yep, i agree, nothing comes close to the detail of stronghold. Its charm. Its gameplay.

I might be in the minority but Id love to see them add the ability to fight the king. Basically an end game goal after acquiring enough land, resources, and a large enough army. Attempting this would be VERY risky as lords you have a relationship with may turn on you. Fighting the kings army would also need to be EXTREMELY difficult and failure would always result in your death and the end of that game...think POE being sent to the void. They would need to add siege mechanics, castle building and appropriate support units etc...dream game for sure!

Context is a really good spice in a game. Subnautica is a very good survival game, but the story that wraps everything together and gives context to everything in your small chunk of the planet is just... majestic.

Manor Lords has a LOT of potential for crunchy, granular detail, and some of that is hinted at in features seen but not available in the current demo. I think this game has some long legs, and I hope the developer is reviewing some of the gameplay footage, because not only bugs and such are being rooted out, but also player wishlists and suggestions for improved gameplay. This is definitely one to keep an eye on! =^[.]^=

Yea, great points made here. I've mostly avoided Manor Lords videos because I want to really experience it for myself but I would love to see your suggestions put to work. As for what I'd like to see... hard to say since I'm mostly in the dark but I would love to be able to build a large sprawling medieval city at some point. Thinking of like Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, D&D or w/e. When the camera zooms out and you see a nice city. Maybe a section for nobility, an area with slums, etc. Then when you go to war, if you're wealthy and a large city, you'll see your knights parading out of the city to war. Man, this type of game gets the juices flowing.

One singular developer made this entire game! AAA's should be embarrassed.
Also the publisher, Hooded Horse, support nothing but high quality solo/indie strategy games. Look into their catalog. They're a terrific judge of which developers with whom to partner. Check out Falling Frontier from them. Another SINGLE DEV space strategy game which also looks incredible.
Edit: Also for context the solo dev did try to manage expectation and clearly stated this game is MAINLY a medieval city builder with a little bit of combat. Probably something like 90/10 or 80/20 at most. And I don't think it's his intention to rival the depth of Crusader Kings etc. I think he wants it to be a more casual and approachable medieval city sim, for now at least.

i think its good to first have abstract systems since its a solo developer while finishing the core and later replace those abstract systems and develop them into deep systems

manor lords is one of those games i thought was going to be too good to be true.
it turns out, it sort of is.
It has a few decisions that i'm not a big fan of, as you mentioned the workers are your actual soldiers so i have to assume if one of them dies on the battlefield you actually lose that worker.
with workers seemingly so difficult to get, losing them in war almost feels like it could end a run to me. It's like someone getting into your mineral line in starcraft. But in this case you are actually sending them in to fight.
The other thing is i got the (apparently false) impression that the combat was going to be mount & blade style, where you yourself along side your army, I would personally have enjoyed it a lot more if so.
The base building/colony side i LOVE however.
In these sort of games, the building its self has to be very visually appealing to me. I'm a sucker for actually watching a house being built in city builders. Instead of just going from started to finished, having steps where you can see framework, then walls etc. From what i've seen of you playing it this games building looks awesome, so i'm quite excited to try it myself.
also, Its supposed to be on gamepass (April 26th) so the price is great too.

I've been seeing this game pop up more, recently, but I haven't paid much attention to it. Maybe I should've been, because this game looks really interesting, if very early in development
7:58 - definitely agree, this is a big thing longer duration games like this need to have replayability and staying power. Rimworld does interpersonal and colony storytelling amazingly, while Crusader Kings handles grander scale political narratives really well. Frostpunk tells an amazing story, if more linear and on-rails, but I feel like that might not be what this game is going for. The game will NEED at least one of these if it wants to have long term staying power, because these are things that will keep people talking about this game.

    • @ZiggyDGaming
      @ZiggyDGaming  4 месяца назад +2

The thing those games all have in common is they organically create stories you remember and want to share with people. I'm definitely excited for the potential for this game to be able to do that too and serve as that perfect "middle-zoom" between things games like Rimworld that are super zoomed in, and games like Crusader Kings that are super zoomed out!

Speaking of telling stories, I can't help but feel the game will eventually need random maps. Even though I can see the benefits of a hand-sculpted map for a game like this and I know the resource locations and fertility zones change with each new game, that just doesn't seem enough to me. I'd like to see the actual geography be different every time I play. Otherwise, you'll see the same choke points, the same king's road, the same landscape vista, which takes away from the personality of each new town. How can one tell new stories if the setting is essentially the same? I feel like I should limit the amount of videos I watch, in case random maps won't happen, because seeing the same map every time will keep eating away at my motivation to actually play the game myself.

No servers here to worry about. And just to be clear I don't think many people have gotten sponsorships - myself and most others requested keys/access to make content and they provided.

For me personally, this game seems to have too much of a combat focus for my liking.
I'm that kind of player who just wants to build production lines in anno and is bothered by all the fighting there too.

there is a peaceful mode for people who just want to build a town... but the combat is what seperates this game from others.
