    I'm a Belgian and I never ever eat mussels in this garlic snail lookalike. We mostly have them with onions, parsley, white wine, pepper, specific musselspices and cook them then for 5 minutes. It's very fast and tasty food but in a healthy sense.

    The left waffle was a Brussels waffle, where you only put powdersugar and some whipped cream that you spread over the waffle. The right waffle was a Liège waffle, which you have to eat without anything. That already contains enough sugar. It's best to eat from a stall along the street. You can eat Brussels waffles in a snack bar.

    guys! Frites (fries) must be eaten with mayonnaise! And then you can try the other condiments, I know it sounds weird to americans but in Belgium and the Netherlands it's a famous combo but you went to the right place to eat them!
    You are right waffles are very good with the powdered suger.
    Chez Leon like someone said before is very touristic, might be good though.

    • @worldwanderer5540

      I was thinking the same thing-I never saw any Belgians eating frites with anything but mayonnaise. The other sauces are for tourists. Probably very good too,however if you want the Belgium experience eat the frites with mayonnaise. It is very tasty

    • @junenovae
      @junenovae 8 лет назад +16

      Well a lot of belgian people do eat with other sauces (Andalouse, Coktail and Ketchup are the main ones) but it's true that the ones that do not eat with mayonnaise (or those three) are usually people with parents that aren't belgian, most of my arabic and french from France friends eat with spicy sauces but they are still belgian in the sense of nationality or tourists like you said
      I really don't understand the general disgust foreign people have with that combination

    • @worldwanderer5540

      Right you are and I think most of the people from other countries are just use to and loyal to the things they were brought up eating. Experimenting with foods around the world is part of the fun for me ^_^

    The restaurant "Chez Leon" is one of the better tourist traps in that street :) I would strongly advice people NOT to eat there. You pay a lot for average/frozen food. The beers in that restaurant (and street) are also twice as high as any other place in Brussels.
    When it comes to beers, try something else than a pilsbeer (St-bernardus 12 is one of my favorites for example).

    Avoid restaurants and pubs in 'rue des boucher' - those are tourist traps. Cheap food (frozen and reheated), but the drinks are expensive. As a Belgian myselve I have never eaten at 'rue des boucher'. There are much better and more cosy places (and not expensive) in Brussels. Go and look for those restaurants and bars away from the grand place but more towards 'the bourse' and 'Place Sainte-Catherine' and 'sint-gorikshal'. Cheers ps: Cafe Archipel is one of the best bars in Brussels, Trappist beer from the draft.

    Interesting fact, Belgium is where American 'french fries' come from. The Belgians used to deep fry tiny fish and sell them as street food but one year they ran out and used thinly cut potatoes instead. American GI's tried them and liked them and as the people they bought them from were French BE they called them 'french fries'.

    Great video and it's true that the traditional way for Waffles is with sugar only. And you pick Dandoy to try them, good choice. For beers, Delirium is nice, but I would prefer the Moeder Lambic where you can get better advice. You picked also a good place for the fries, there are other than place Flagey but it's a good spot. The middle sauce is the Andalouze which is a Belgian invention and a huge favorite. I think there is even a wiki page about it. Also this spot for fries is usually open very late, which is nice.
    So you are asking for different places:
    For fries, you can go to place Jourdan: Chez Antoine. It's famous. The best thing is that they have an agreement with the surrounding pubs, so you can buy your fries chez Antoine and bring them to the pub to have a beer. You can also try fries next to the Bourse (or Beurs in Dutch), it's called Fritland.
    For beers, you should check the Moeder Lambic, La Becasse close to the grand place (that is a bit hidden, so you will have to deserve it). Otherwise there is also the brew dog pub but that's more expensive. The poechenellekelder is next to the Manneken Pis and a great pub also.
    There is a nice Fish & Chips in the center called Bia Mara, you should try it.
    For typical Belgian Food, a good place is the "In't Spinnekopke".
    Have fun

  • @KiffJRockka
    @KiffJRockka 4 года назад

    Next time buy a waffle on the streets, they are buildings but you order and pick them up on streetside, those are the best ones, without chocolate, but with melted sugar on it, it's delicious and not that sweety compared to what you get in a tea-room, where you sit inside. For mussels the best is mussels cooked in white wine, or in a creamy garlicly sauce, you ate the mussels as a "aperitive" coming from the oven, not from a traditional mussel pot. Frites we eat mostly with mayonaise, pickles, stoofvleessaus (stew pot), frietsaus or tartate, the normal Ketchup (non-curry) is also perfect. Love these vids!

    As a Belgian, if I'm allowed to give a little hint for next time. Rue des Bouchers in Brussels (where the restaurant was where you guys ate mussles) is considered by Belgians as the street with the tourist trap restaurants in Brussels. It's worth it to avoid the street and just take a few streets further where food is better :)

      Yeah, fair enough. It's tough when you don't have much time in a city because you mostly have to rely on trip advisor and yelp :/ But we'll definitely be back and make a follow up at some more authentic places!

      I actually noticed, this is same exact way they serve it in Netherlands. At least in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. I visited Netherlands in 2015 and was shocked that people eat fries just alone, but with shitload of mayo :D

    Gotta say i'm an unconditional fan of Brasil sauce for fries, but as everyone has said, mayo is the first thing to try out, before anything else. Then yeah the street you guys went to is a street for tourists, it's close to the delirium cafe (the 2000+ beers bar they showcased, which by the way is even more awesome on the below 1 floor, which is where the cellar is located!) and you should avoid that street at all costs (I mean for eating purposes)
    And I'm actually disappointed the chocolate isn't mentioned. Also other Belgian dishes you should try out are waterzooi, vol au vent (half belgian half french to be honest), carbonnades flamandes, and oh so many more.
    Restaurants to try out: Schievelavabo, Perroquet, de hoef, il monticelli. (not all are Belgian but these are personal fav).

    Dandoy has indeed the best waffles in Brussels; tried different locations when I was there and by far, no competition for Dandoy. There are 2 types of waffles, Brussels and Liege, with the latter one already having sugar in the batter, so no need to put sugar on top. And the frites....both at place Flagey and Jourdan, I saw the delivery man delivering frozen fries, which they later double fried, so don't know what's the hoopla about belgian fries----they are frozen and not really fresh, which you can really tell when you try them. Nobody could tell me where I could actually find fresh frites, so I didn't think the fries were all that great in Brussels. Get me some fresh frites and then we're talking! If you can, go have some free chocolates at the Neuhaus factory address, Postweg 2, 1602 Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Belgium. You can get there by metro (erasmus stop), and then a little 10 min walk. Worth it!

    • @Theendlessadventure
      @Theendlessadventure  8 лет назад

      Thanks for the input on the waffles. And I definitely hear you on the fries. The ones we had were frozen but, honestly, they were crunchy and amazing hah! So we didn't want to complain to much :) We actually just left but would have loved to check out Neuhaus! Next time for sure :D Thanks for stopping by!

      Concerning the fries, that's probably just another tourist trap. I live only 20-30 kms from Brussels and I get my fries from a place that cuts them themselves. The owners are super friendly, the food is always good and the fries fresh, best fries in town if you ask me.

    • @chrisnihq
      @chrisnihq 8 лет назад

      So what do you call fries that come in a plastic bag and are frozen? Fresh potatoes?

    • @thenewfoundation9822
      @thenewfoundation9822 8 лет назад +6

      I presume you thought they were frozen, but you actually can't double fry frozen fries. Frozen fries (the ones you can get in supermarkets for example) have to be fried only once, because they've already been boiled or fried once before been frozen. Try it for yourself, you'll see what I mean. I've seen fries delivered to a variety of different fries stands and take aways, but never have I seen one where they deliver frozen fries. They come in huge plastic bags, precut but fresh.

    • @steve24822
      @steve24822 8 лет назад +1

      In a very well known Hotel in London, we used to boil the potato's (After cutting) for about 20 minutes and then blast freeze them for about 5 minutes. This had the effect of taking most of the water out, a freezer is amazing at sucking water out of food. We then cooked them for 1 minute in really hot oil ready for the main cook.
      Frozen chips are one of the greatest inventions ever. Fresh is not always better. Same applies to peas, much better frozen than fresh.

    Local people avoid this area in Brussels, the "Rue des Bouchers" (litteraly Butchers street) is loaded with "tourist traps"... I'd never go to "Léon". And you eat fries with mayonnaise in Belgium, neither Ketchup nor "Américaine". Next time try them with "Tartare", it's delicious !!!

There was more poverty than I have ever seen, garbage everywhere, the sidewalk tiles were all loose, and the customer service was dreadful. If you are going to Belgium I would suggest visiting Antwerp, Bruges or Ghent.

    Pretty good effort at a lightening tour of Brussels food and drink.
    If you do another ever again (and its worth doing as there's so much more beyond moules, waffles and fries) then carbonade flamande has to go on the menu - as does an exploration of the more esoteric beer culture - specifically the gueze / lambics - brewed with the wild yeasts in the air (rather than brewers yeasts) and then blended after ageing...

    Waffles are cheaper and tastier in little street shop vendors without any toppings, that beer place is good but not the coziest place to sit, you wanna go there at night to see the nightlife and order some funkier beer flavors(chocolate, coconut, honey etc...). As for the mussels the one you had looked more like a french style. We usually eat them in a big black claypot filled with wine and fries on the side. the street fries look perfectly authentic, try chocolates with nuts in chocolate shops called mendiants. PS: beware. The downtown restaurants are very touristy and overpriced.

    You liked the beer boot, but watch out for the Schnapps boot. This entails having a small boot shaped glass, filled with Schapps, which you hold against a beer glass, so that when you drink the beer, the Schnapps cascades into your beer glass.it is a very dangerous party trick, as 2 glasses of beer and Schnapps will likely put you on your ear. I have only tried it once, but Oh Mama! I think that the problem was, combining it with Champagne. I was nota well puppy next day.

  • @MitsuhaRiversong

    Waffles should indeed be consumed with powdered sugar and maybe some whipped cream. If you want to go all out, maybe some real fresh fruit on the side, but a good place for that is hard to find.
    For beer it is advisable not to go near the 'tourist zone'. They charge way too much and their tap is often not well fine tuned/maintained.
    Where they had the mussels is called rue de boucher and it is well known (to Belgians at least) that it's one big tourist trap. I would advice to look on google maps and look what the 'locals' say. (I am from Belgium, just not from Brussels)
    For the frites, again try to go where locals go themselves. If there's a servicewindow at the street side, that's a bad sign. But where they went in this video, it could be good. Again, don't know Brussels enough.
