Universal Power Antenna Install - Modifying for Thirdgen F-Body Fitment - AW-PW22

    Hey everyone! I finally have a couple of videos ready to put up! Nothing incredibly earth shattering, but Im working on that!
    This project was a long time coming. Video pretty much says it all. Ive seen plenty of threads on forums mentioning using these universal antennas, and some mentioned modifying them to work, but no real details. So...here's how I did it.
    While this deals mostly with third generation F-body cars, it can be used to fit these antenna anywhere that you want, if you need the mast tube extended.
    Factory replacement power antenna for these cars are VERY expensive for what they are. For a little effort and work, and a couple extra dollars, you can make one of these universals fit!

    Thanks for making this vid. 4 years ago i bought a universal but was unsure how to install it. i may reconsider and try again. :)

      punkmaster98 Hey awesome! Glad it helped you out some. I kind of dove in blind, but its not too bad. Ill admit this hot to isnt one of my better ones. I have a second antenna, and left over PVC...Im considering doing another video and including the actual steps. Have to see how much time I can scrounge up between everything else going on haha.     Thanks for the video. A few months ago I was reluctant to purchase one of the universal antennae, until I saw your video. What I did was buy a little brass pipe with 1/8" NPT on each end that was 5" long instead of using the screws. It doesn't need to be threaded. I bought one PVC coupler, and cut my 1/2" PVC to 5 1/8" length. I do not have it installed yet, and the antenna pokes out about 1/4" now. Once installed (tomorrow) it should be around flush to 1/8". Hopefully my measurements can further help people so they don't have to spend a few hundred bucks on an original antenna.

      +Tim Ramich Ah... so you used the brass pipe as a spacer basically? Good idea! I had to work with what I had laying around, and my idea was that this would be adjustable if i didnt like where the mast ended up. Your idea would be too. Just cut a little of the nipple off if it were too long, etc. Thanks for watching and glad it helped you brain storm!

      +JEG's Garage Yeah, and it also helps keep the nylon cord in a confined space and not flop around, for when it has to push up on the mast. I also wrapped some tape around the brass pipe to keep it centered within the PVC.

    awesome ! my formula had the power antenna, but it broke long ago (94 or 95) and i have never found an affordable compatible unit . guess what I'm doing this weekend, thanks a million

      Awesome! Glad the video helped! My antenna is still working awesome. You can easily wire it up like factory so it goes up and down with the radio operation.

    For GREAT once and awhile use this might be ok, but those screws will eventually tear up the mast cable. You should have put some PEX tubing inside as the stop.
    Also that mast being metal would work as antenna even if it is down. That PVC makes that not happen. 6:40

      It lasted 8 years, 1000's of up and downs, and I doubt it would get reception while down even if it were metal. I've owned a few cars with factory power antenna and unless they're up, they aren't doing much. Not saying you're feedback is bad or anything, just backing up the project with 8 years of testing.       @@JEGsGarage Well backing up what I am telling you is that I was a Signal System Support Specialist in the Army for 15 years (AKA Radio guy) and working with antennas since I was ten and Even more at 16 when I got my first car and installed a power antenna then. I am 49 now.
      Look up "Datsun Nissan 72 240z OEM Radio Hitachi Km-1520ZC" It has a Up/Down switch for manual control of the antenna. Used to fine tune the stations. So that lower mast section needs to be contacting the mast tube at all times.
      I know it does not matter to you since all you do is have it up or down but that does not make what I said invalid. But even when down you can still get reception as long as it makes contact. What you did made that not possible at all.

      @@AztecWarrior69 ok...but I'm telling you whats done here works, it's proven to work, exactly how it does with the factory power antenna. I'm not saying what you're saying is wrong at all. But this isn't a military vehicle, and no one with a power antenna needs it to work while down. They'd delete the antenna and get a hidden antenna if they wanted. That metal tube, it goes into plastic. The mast isn't using that tube for anything other than structure. If the metal tube was being used for actual reception, I wouldn't have done it. This actually got better reception than the fixed mast 😁 When in the up position, it's functioning similar to the fixed mast setup.
      Not that it's a pi$$ing match, but I've been working with antennas since I was 13 when I got into CB radios. Ive built my own base station antennas from scratch, I've dabbled in mobile comms for many years from CB to HAM. I'm 43. FM radio antennas aren't rocket science.

      never said it was the point is that I know a ton more about radios OF ALL TYPES and know about frequencies extensively. Just because it was military equipment at the time does not restrict the knowledge obtained strictly to military equipment.

      They sure as heck aren't so why are you so adamant to not see or can't admit that if there is no contact then it does not work at all.
      why are people SOO FULL of pride that it makes them blind to simple flaws in their work.
      Anyway I know you won't change it and it is obvious you won't take advice but this is more for the people who want to do it similar.

      Tinkering with stuff and DIY is great but that is in no way the same as a person who has been PROFESSIONALLY trained and schooled in the matter not only in the Army but the other Jobs that sent me to be PROFESSIONALLY trained and schooled. Not to mention the Masters in Computer Networking and Engineering.
      Yeah not a contest but there is no comparison. And come on. Let's be real. If you worked with antennas as much as you say you did, then you would have made it with something conductive. JS.
      Anyway I'm Out. No sense in beating a dead horse.

It's pretty obvious your ego won't let you see that what was done in the video WORKS AND HAS WORKED FOR 8 YEARS AND WILL WORK FOR FRIGGIN EVER! Jesus you are hard headed. No the damn metal tube doesn't matter in this case. I don't care about the Nissan, and no I didn't look it up because this is NOT A NISSAN AND DOES NOT HABE ADJUSTABLE FRIGGIN TUNING. I also dont care what your profession is or how much training you have or what you've done in your life. You are arguing with someone who LITERALLY ALREADY BUILT IT AND IT WORKS. You summed it up by saying you have engineering training. I work with engineers all day, and god bless em, they're brilliant but hard headed AF. Can't accept that a "good ol boy" who just "tinkers and DIY" could possibly come up with a good solution. Gotta beat it into them before they come around.
      Damn I don't normally get into it but you pissed me off. We can take this argument to another venue. Facebook, email, whatever you want. But my channel is better than this. I'll give it a day then I'm deleting the entire conversation. It's asinine and I feel childish for even typing this.

      @@JEGsGarage So what if I where to make an elogated mounting bracket to evade having to cut the mast? I feel like making a long bracket to mount to the body tab and the bottom of the antenna base would be less work.

      @@SilentOneCorajuda13 that sounds reasonable. I can't remember all the details of why I extended the mast like that. It may have been a fitment issue with the body of the antenna. All I can say is fiddle with it. I found it easier to mod the antenna to fit, but I don't recall messing with it very long trying to get it to work as it was.

      @@JEGsGarage I'm gonna give my idea a shot and update you on the progress. Definitely should help with others in the future if they decide to go with an aftermarket power antenna.

      Update. Can't push up the antenna because the inner fender has a hole that is too small. The motor does not allow the whole antenna to rise higher.

    I know some radios power up the antenna only when the radio mode (fm/am) is playing, and is down with CD or other input are in use. I was wondering if you checked yours for that? I think it should have a power antenna wire on the radio.

      impala340 Yup I checked! Its a Pioneer deck. And Im using that blue remote wire for my amp. There is no separate circuit for power antenna unfortunately. So its either have it come up anytime the radio is on, or put a switch on it. This was quick and easy. Ide like a more incognito switch, but this works for now. Thanks for watching!

      +impala340 I have a Delco radio from a Blazer (same as what's in the later F-bodies) and it signals the antenna regardless of the actual radio function being on. Delco really dropped the ball on that. How hard would it have been to accomplish what is normal? I don't need my antenna being up when I am playing a CD.

    All these videos how come nobody shows how to remove the actual antenna?

      Probably because it's super easy. Just unscrew all the parts on the fender. Inside remove the passenger kick panel, remove radio and unplug antenna, fish the wire out.

    Evidently they do make a black mast for it, and it comes with a black mounting nut.
