I think the main reason is frankly they just aren't... *flashy* in their appearance. They're lovely in their personality, though. Their colour is dull, dark & easily overlooked, & I suspect that might be why people pass them over, leaving behind a lovely little lizard that's personable, friendly & easy to care for.

The hormonal changes in breeding season is enough let alone a 5000 page essay on everything else why they suck. Obviously I love them, so I say that with love but man they suck.

Man, Clint is really getting brave. First he handled that cobra. Now he's handling the deadly Chuckwalla without any protective equipment. He likes to live dangerously. 🤣
I have a chuckwalla, and I wouldn’t trade him for the world. Just a lovely creature who wants to be around people, always curious about what we’re doing and the world around him.
All thanks to one absurd matchup in The Ultimate Reptile Rumble, the Chuckwalla has officially joined the ranks of Chuck Norris, Shaggy Rogers, Bully Maguire, Dr. Livesey, Gaston, and other memetic badasses. And I love it. 😆
@@cowsharkdefin6376 A Chuckwalla was once roundhouse kicked by Chuck Norris, and after three days of agonizing pain... Chuck Norris' foot finally regenerated.
I can't believe you didn't mention my favorite characteristic of the chuckwalla - their curiosity. Many years ago friends and I were camping in a canyon out past Indio. I saw a head pop up over a boulder along the canyon about 20 yards down. It ducked back down and I paid little attention till I saw it pop up again, this time only about 10 yards down the canyon. Again it disappeared after a few moments. A few minutes later the little monster is coming up behind us under the cars. It got within about 3 yards, watched us for about 5 minutes then vanished into a tailings pile of bowling ball size rocks. For a while San Francisco zoo had a tank with chuckwallas and other similar sized lizards near the Mandrill enclosure. The lizards were great to watch because they were always chasing each other around, and in particular the chuckwallas would watch the watchers, often approaching the glass to get a better look. I've kept many reptiles in my time and never seen any other herp show much tendency to seek interaction with a human when food was not involved.
Hail the mighty chuckwalla, all tremble before its presence! Do not let its actually pretty good score of 3.8/5 and 5/5 handleability deceive you :DD! Love all your videos Clint!
I've always thought these guys were so cute and assumed they didn't do well in captivity since I never saw them at expos or shops. Now that my suspicions have been concerned that they're wonderful little babies, I need one 😂
Behold the Mighty Chuckwalla! Thanks Clint for answering our prayers and allowing us to feast our eyes on this magnificent predator of vegetables. This is one of the best channels on RUclips.
Alright, I am ready for all Chuckwalla killer jokes. Clint, I anticipate great things in this video and from this comment section. Everyone proceed with caution, there could be boulders anywhere.
These guys are very similar in most ways to Uromastyx. I'm entirely sure they'd give beardies a run for their money in popularity if only more people knew they existed.
Something to keep in mind, which is a good thing for many owners, and a bad thing for some owners, is that chuckwallas can easily live into their 20s, with one individual having lived to be 65 years old. That's a commitment, and one that can technically outlive you!
Something I would like to see get scored is a fennec fox. Only 6 states outright ban them from being kept. I had considered keeping one or two but after doing my own research, they are A LOT to manage and very hyper and loud. I think providing a score for keeping them could discourage others from trying but also open the door to people with the time and patience to have a wonderful experience.
I am expecting my first baby to be born any day now and your channel is seriously helping me stay happy and entertained through these long days😊 Many of these animals I had never even heard of, it's cool to learn new things!

@lissylissard that's actually what I was thinking of when I made the comment. I grew up catching them in northern california. They're cantankerous at first but almost always tamed out within a week, especially the northerns. And the natural variation in their coloring and pattern seems ripe for morph development. Awesome video as always Clint!!!! Reminds me so much of my Uromastyx Geyri Bruce! He is the most personable lizard I have ever owned. He loves to come out of his enclosure and he practically runs straight to me whenever he sees me! Only took about a year or so for him to really warm up to me and not be scared, but now we are best buds! Love chuckwallas and hope to be able to own one some day when I have the space :)
I used to breed chuckwallas in my research lab! While watching a clutch hatch, I witnessed the first recorded twinning event for the genus. I based my entire research project on it! Unfortunately only one of the twins lived past infancy, but I got some incredible pictures, genetic samples, and data. I would love to own one of these guys as a pet. All 50 lab chucks were my precious children.
Thank you for featuring my absolute favorite lizard! I have been searching for YEARS for one of my own. Availability is definitely a difficult point with these guys. But they are soooo incredibly cool. I've seen them in the wild while out hiking in Arizona. They're so chill, curious, and beautiful.
In addition to UT, and AZ apparently, we have them here in San Diego county deserts. Some pictures show them with pumpkin orange colored bands around their mid-sections. Great lizards!
I was thinking the same thing about colouration. I don't know that I have seen a solid dark gray color before. Lovely as they are in any color, I would opt for a more colorful animal every time 🦎😊
THEY'RE SO PRECIOUS AND ADORABLE OMFG. SUCH A SWEETHEART. If I had to own a reptile, it'd be one of these. It didn't take long to win me over. Look at him on Clint's shoulder at 6:31. That's too darn wholesome. I'm making the same kissy noises while watching the same way I do looking at most of my favorite animals like opossums and cicadas. Thanks Clint, didn't know reptiles could be THIS precious. It helps that these are native to the US, albeit in the southwest as opposed to the southeast. Still, if I ever do get a reptile that isn't a ball python, it'll be one of these guys. Their requirements are ironically stuff we have here in the southeast, like heat and UV light. Really humidity is the only thing that'd be of concern, but that's not impossible to get rid of.
I gotta have one of those tshirts! I actually met a Herptologist about 30 years ago. He lived in a high desert mountain town in southern texas. i had gone to his house to adopt a male bearded dragon. I started talking about all of his animals and he offered to show me! One of the last things he took me to see what outside. It was a big round structure, looked like a stock tank, but was made of concrete. Inside the big concrete enclosure he had it about half full of sand and dirt so perfect for the Chuckwallas and Uromastyx. They were the last ones I met and I was immediately enchanted with them! Beautiful sweet lizards! I'd love to have a chuckwalla actually!
I'm so happy you did a video on the Chuckwalla!!! I've only ever seen a Chuckwalla at the Museum of Science Boston, it's lived there for many many years and it's also such a sweetheart that left a big impression on me. Pompeii is adorable and I'm thrilled that thanks to this video, even more people will be introduced to the Chuckwalla's charm! ❤🦎
That does seem to be a very delightful salad-eating sandpaper potato you've got there. Your excitement (which seems even higher that your typical usual high excitement for every darn species) truly shows just how much you love Pompeii and how much you want to promote chuckwallas as a species.
As someone whose owned a tortoise, this might be my step into lizards. A friend of mine had a terrible cricket infestation when his feeders got out so I've avoided carnivorous reptiles for a long time. I'm also a huge rodent fan so I hope one day you'll cover guinea pigs. The bigger, less hyper, but still adorable cousins of rats.
That is an amazing lizard there, Clint. Desert lizards are great- I saw a video featuring Saara loricata and they were so cool- one of the most prehistoric looking faces I've seen on a lizard. I'm obsessed. Unfortunately the Iraqi lizard is pretty rare in the US but if you can find one I think we'd all love to see it. They seem like they would make good pets.
Wow, that is such an awesome reptile. I have never heard of them before, and I do hope they start to become more prominent so they can be appreciated just as much as any other reptile. Super cute little guys. 😍😍❤❤
Thank you for making a Chuckwalla video as I requested! :D They're hard to obtain as there currently aren't many breeders in the U.S. I can't understand why they're nowhere near as popular as they were 15 years ago as they're not even threatened.
Most dangerous animal ever. Can't believe Clint risked his life to show us this. I really hope those book authors are watching this video in absolute embarrassment, as they should be. Seriously, this is easily the most laid back reptile Clint has had on that table. Never once showed signs of fear or hyperactivity.
I've been waiting for this! I just got one off of Craigslist of all places! He's so cool and I love him. I'm confused why his tail is weird though. Instead of tapering off, there's a sharp decline in size, then the end is blunt
I live in the UK and kept a pair of chuckwallas for around 8 years. Like Clint, I found them to be the perfect reptile to keep. As stated in the video they do like greens, particularly dandelion and rocket, but their favourite food, by a considerable margin, is flowers, which I believe this is their main food source in the wild. Mine were particularly fond of nasturtium and dandelion flowers, and would eat twelve or more at a sitting.
Oh, what a cool lizard! I’m in Southern Utah, but have never seen one of these, and now I want one! My beardie is 12 y.o., but I’ll have to wait until h dies to consider a Chuckwalla. We have a Chuckwalla Trail, down closer to town, so I’ve wondered what these lizards look like. Now I know. Thanks for the review!
I fell in love with Chuckwallas when as a child I saw John Ford's classic Western "Wagon Master" when the musicians played the "Chuckwalla Swing" square dance for the pioneers.
I feel like we need a head to head to head. Even though you compared them to beardies, they remind me of Uros. Like how Uromastyx like to also wedge themselves into tight spaces.
Finally! A video on chuckwallas! I've known they're a good pet for ages. Hopefully a better captive population will develop sometime soon, I'd hate to see them taken from the wild
they are a gorgeous orangish color unlike Chuckwallas elsewhere. Ive tried to catch them before but no luck as they are super quick and slip right into the nearest crack where they proceed to do their best impression of a balloon while staring at you right in the face and wedging themselves in soo tightly that you couldnt get them out even with a crowbar
This species CAN live well in a large, properly landscaped aquarium in a dry climate. Rocky warm basking heat dissipates through the glass quickly, so temperatures can drop precipitously toward the cool side. And mesh tops (here in AZ, anyway) both allow lights to be close for intensity and vent out any built up humidity just marvelously. THIS is your living room lizard.
One note on humidity: The Angel and San Esteban island chuckwallas actually experience relatively high levels of humidity for a few months each summer in their natural environments. So while Miami might still be out of the question, slightly less humid areas in the southeastern US might still be a good fit for those species, especially compared to the common chuckwallas that would live in Arizona, for example

That does seem to be a very delightful salad-eating sandpaper potato you've got there. Your excitement (which seems even higher that your typical usual high excitement for every darn species) truly shows just how much you love Pompeii and how much you want to promote chuckwallas as a species.
Chuck around and find out is my new favorite phrase. Thanks Clint.
I need to know how many people in the world have called this little fella Chuck. 😂
Or Norris
Or Wally.
14:41 Ratchet and Clank, Clank laugh.
Great video, Clint.
I’ve been waiting YEARS for a chuckwalla vid 😂 I’ve got a calico (San Esteban/angel island cross)
1:46 Clint is so wholesome, so this amazing and scandalous Chuck pun has given me so much life - I absolutely must buy this shirt on my next paycheck!
Thank you for making a Chuckwalla video as I requested! :D They're hard to obtain as there currently aren't many breeders in the U.S. I can't understand why they're nowhere near as popular as they were 15 years ago as they're not even threatened.
Chuckwalla... feared by his enemies.... FEARED BY HIS FRIENDS.
I wish I had the space to get one of these chucks.
I mean this in a nice way clint is by far my favorite nerd.
I've been waiting for this! I just got one off of Craigslist of all places! He's so cool and I love him. I'm confused why his tail is weird though. Instead of tapering off, there's a sharp decline in size, then the end is blunt
Huh... Guess they do drop their tails
That sounds like he dropped his tail at some point & the current tail is a regrown one.
What a splendid creature. I am in love.
I am head over heels for this little dude! He is BEAUTIFUL. 😍 And what a good boy to eat his veggies without any bribes 😆 My son won't even do that.
This video made me realize I've never seen clint out of a tie and I feel like I've walked in on something I wasn't supposed to see
I fell in love with Chuckwallas when as a child I saw John Ford's classic Western "Wagon Master" when the musicians played the "Chuckwalla Swing" square dance for the pioneers.
Finally a video on the chuckwalla I’m happy. Now I just hoping we can get a video on the collard lizard as I’m wanting to know Clint’s opinion on them
I saw a chuckwalla while climbing a mountain in Phoenix some years back. Who knew they also make for good pets!
This is amazing now I want a chuckwalla and a tegu and a blue toungue skink. This channel is dangerous😂
Had a green iguana she was 6 feet and weighed 22 lbs.her name was lightin and I loved her
Out here in Arizona we have those guys anywhere there’s rock. They range a lot in coloration. Us locals love them!
they are a gorgeous orangish color unlike Chuckwallas elsewhere. Ive tried to catch them before but no luck as they are super quick and slip right into the nearest crack where they proceed to do their best impression of a balloon while staring at you right in the face and wedging themselves in soo tightly that you couldnt get them out even with a crowbar
I have been waiting for the Chuckwalla episode ever since that book, thank you!
They're amazing! So sweet and personable
The "Who Would Win?" Books have had a permanent effect on this channel and I'm so here for it 😂
This species CAN live well in a large, properly landscaped aquarium in a dry climate. Rocky warm basking heat dissipates through the glass quickly, so temperatures can drop precipitously toward the cool side. And mesh tops (here in AZ, anyway) both allow lights to be close for intensity and vent out any built up humidity just marvelously. THIS is your living room lizard.
I have waited for this video for so long!! Glad to learn that they also make amazing pets!! Thanks! :)
I've been wanting this video for months! What a delight! 😂
I have to give this a rewatch. It's one of those great Clint reviews that require a second look just to fully appreciate.
Thank you for content, coming off antidepressants and you're so positive
The chucking around bit at the beginning made me smile. I needed that today.
