Boss SP-505 sampling, sequencing, and the awesome CHOP feature

  • The Boss SP-505 must have one of the best simplicity to capability ratios I've ever seen. The manual is only as think as a few bits of junk mail and most functions, if not completely intuitive, only have to be learned once to be locked in your brain. There are more effects than I demonstrate here, and more sequencing features ...but with the average RUclips watcher moving on after only about 90 seconds, I thought 17 minutes was definitely enough...

I just picked up one of these yesterday for only $100 USD. I owned one about 8 or 9 years ago but I sold it. At the time I just didnt like a lot of things about it(No 1/4" outputs except for headphone jack, cheap feeling plastic chassis, very hard rubber buttons and a few othrer gripes) but now I think my style and approach has changed a lot and I will end up using the auto chop a lot where as back in the day I just jeeded a sampler to play spoken word clips from movies. I also agree that its insane to pay $300 for an SP-303 or even more for a 404 when the 505 can do it all and is superior is several ways. I am glad i got one now and for the price I paid. I probably wont ever sell this one but if I do I know this is now a good investment that can make a profit.

Very useful tutorial and demo; esp compared to some others I've seen that were next to impossible to understand for one reason or another. Without having my 505 in front of me I'll have to guess that I'll still be able to extrapolate the info I need even though - here comes my one major beef - WHY in the world did you go to all the trouble to make an otherwise great and consise (17 mins no prob) vid without getting a good shot of the display?! I'm pretty sure I'll figure it out and thank you much for putting a lot of good and non fluff info into this tutorial. Overall... 8 outta 10 but I would have given a 12 if I could have seen the screen :)

      1. you have 16 pads
      2. you have a lot of sample banks
      3. very easy to cut samples, and add start and end point - you have a wave form on the lcd screen
      4. you have 4 tracks for 1 pattern, so you can "play" with this trancks (e.g. with mute option)
      5. very easy to resample + add some fx tp create new sounds
      6. no direct acces for fx like SP303 has
      7. very easy chop function to cut a sample, but you cant't save it
      8. you have pith option to play with one sample, but you cant't save it
I have already 2 SP505, very easy to use. I recently sold my SP 303 :)

I am awakeing my sp505 as I now have a smartmedia reader, and I am traversing all corners of the internet to try and find the "preset files" (which i believe are the preset patterns as well as the preset drums within the machine upon original purchase) in an attempt to update the system, my presets were erased and now i have a brick which was once an sp505. Has anyone at Gearfacts ever been approached by someone with this issue? Roland is of very little help in this issue with such an outdated machine. This is lie the red ring of death but for my sp. I literally cannot get past the "Update preset" warning when turing it on.

    • @gearfacts

Also I'd suggest googling if there's a way to do a hardware reset using a combination of buttons held down when the power is turned on. These are only vague guesses, I'm afraid i really have no idea. There might be a facebook group of SP505 users perhaps....
