Oh man! I started with the 202 and Acid Pro in 2000. That gritty sound can't be found on new gear. I wish I still had my old drum kits I made on that thing. Thanks for reminding me that good music can be made simply!
Been watching your vids since I went from a musician to a producer and you've helped me an unreal amount, almost as much as my university! Been looking at getting an SP for awhile but seeing the dr202 made up my mind... This couldn't have come at a better time. Great video. I have the exact same combo from back in my club days. As a drummer in a cover band in the 90's the setup was instrumental in covering Korn, NIN and Limp Bizkit tunes. Loved the versatility and sound, especially the 808 kick.
I can’t front I have had this thing for a whole and a few times felt like I was tired of it but never could bring myself to sell it. The pitch shift alone, and sampling the master bus from any in-the-box mix to hear the difference never stops being fun. I have so many tricks up my sleeve with just this little box alone. I remember using the internal mic on this to sample the atmosphere of me walking inside the mall once. It is great as a cheap FX processor.
@@Verysickbeats Thanks man, I enjoyed your video by the way! Still new to this stuff. These things can be complicated when your a beginner. Thanks for your help!
Hi. Your description of the difference in the Pitch Function from unit to unit is the same as Boss's Digital Delay Pedals for guitar. When you adjust the time knob on earlier models the transition is smooth; no extra noises. On the newer models there's artifacts where you can hear the processor trying to keep up. An excellent thing to point out!!! Cheers!
Brethren, the SP-202 has always commanded respect from creatives. And with these examples, a whole new wave of creatives will gravitate to using it. Especially the (SP-DR Duo). As a result, I guess I should prioritize acquiring one sooner than later now. Great Research, and I look forward to hearing more from “Scrapper”. Peace...Netm8kr 👍🏾✌🏾
This thing is a hidden beast for 90's hiphop drums / and some sounds - had the pleasure of working with one for a while and honestly look for this thing everywhere!!! Coupled with the 303 as well makes a dangerous combo!
I just picked up the DR because I had the SP for so long, and like you said, to bring them together. I didn't even know they could link up through MIDI. That's wild.
Soooo impressive bro, i managed to find both an sp 202 and Dr 202 online, cant wait too get these oldskool Analog machines together and form Voltron!!🤖

Wow I wasn't sure the 202's still existed like a lot of 90s gear had these internal batteries that were like ticking time bombs, like my brother stuck his korg into storage and that internal battery ate the the whole inside away with acid pouring over the internals. Big thumbs up that Boss gear from the 90s still works today!
@@rashodlewis2918 Although what I am talking about are these internal batteries in 90s synths for clocking, basically even if you never use anything but a wall plug on a synth from the early 90s you could have a battery acid disaster from these tiny internal watch sized batteries. Congrats on the SP Trio, man! The 202 is great for crunching drums. Hey, on those yellow pads on the 303, Lysol makes a multi-surface cleaner w/ hydrogen peroxide (not the bathroom cleaner). I sprayed a good amount on a rag and gave it a good wiping. It took about 40% of that yellowing off. No joke. I was so impressed, I cleaned my entire studio with it. It was safe on everything. Try it out.
Yup this is a sign for me 🤦🏽♂️🙏🏽 I was looking at Sp 555., I had the sp 202 , I currently have the 404. Aye bro, I’m glad I’m not the only gear junky. Dr groove is my first instrument and I still have it. Also wow!!!! I never sync the 202 and Dr groove together after 19years later. Thanks
Sounds like the 202 retains the cleaner quality when pitch shifting because it shifts tempo as well to match the pitch shift. Cool feature but different thing to just pitch shift
On the 404 and the 303 when your using the pitch effect you gotta turn the wet/dry all the way to wet. Its like some sort of pitch delay effect but if you make it only the wet signal it works as just a pitch effect without the slapback delay thing
I set it up for our drummer back in the day to an Octopad with a drumstick so he could trigger samples during songs. We used some for intros and weird stuff.
Bless you mate, I'm feeling your love for these bad boys. I only have the DR 202, I can confirm that YES it's the dirtiest digital drum machine I own in my collection of Romplers. I love it, sadly the price of the SP 202 is insane In Berlin, I got the Doc for 100 Euros in mint condition 5 years ago.
Through the MS-1 the drums sounds even more rugged than the SP-202 without flams. Surprised you don't own an MS-1 too. The un-quantized sequencer of the MS-1 is dope. (No effects but, never cared as that's what DAWs are for I always thought. The simplicity of the MS-1 is part of the allure yet heads slept on it). It was my first sampler back in 98 before putting the MPC 2000XL on layaway and, I still use it with the XL and MPC One).
Now thats a mad lab! I still use my sp303 Dr Sample and my PCM JX-305 groovesynth! Great video! Do not turn your back on the tools of yesterday. Many of these devices are responsible for earth moving music.

Mad respect for a guy who knows their machine's traits and personality. And a pretty slick beatmaker at that, too.

A sampler can sample external audio sources, a sequencer can arrange samples(via midi) or internal sounds

If you turn third knob on SP-303+404 (in PITCH effect) You can set ratio between dry and pitched signal so that unwanted artefacts dissapear
