The amazing visions from the Webb Space Telescope have captivated the world. However, there is a long and involved process by which the scientist's black and white observational data are transformed into dynamic color imagery for the public. Join image specialists Alyssa Pagan and Joe DePasquale as they discuss, detail, and demonstrate the art and science of translating infrared light. Further, they will highlight the importance of creating these images in the first place, in serving to educate, engage and inspire.
News from the Universe starts at 3:06
    Main talk starts at 8:56
Host: Frank Summers, Space Telescope Science Institute
Recorded live on Tuesday, January 17, 2023

Oh no! Why are the posted monthly talks going away after the end of 2023? I will miss them. I represent “general public” and a member of the North Carolina Raleigh Astronomy Club and and affiliate member of AAS. I enjoy learning about Astronomy. Thank you to the team presenting today!

I'm working as a matte painter for film visual effects. It's fascinating to see how the same techniques I use applied to tease out scientific data in a visually aesthetic way. I was always interested in astronomy since a kid, but was always best at art. I hadn't thought that it was possible to combine the two disciplines until seeing this. But I should have realised actually. A no brainer when realising you have to deal with Hubble's and Webb's raw data. Absolutely brilliant lecture!

As a hobbyist AP'r I was tickled to see that you are using PI. People don't realize the many hours involved in capturing a good data set. Even so, it's really not much of anything to look at without good editing skills to extract the data without over emphasizing. Really enjoyed the video. 👍

Is that some gravity lensing I can see in the middle of the pic? Maybe 1 or 2 black holes?
A great insight to the tech behind awesome pics.😃👍

re 1:18:45 Sonification requires the 'viewer' to be lucid in the 'language of sonification'. Is there a useful or justifiable VI population that can benefit from sonification?
