  • Havana is a time capsule, a treasure trove where vintage American cars still rumble through the city streets. These classic cars remnants of a lost age have become an emblematic symbol of Cuba.
Known as máquina or the slang term 'Yank Tanks' describes the especially large American models produced from the 1940's, 50s and 60s, classic cars like the 1957 Chevrolet, a 1953 Ford, a 1958 Dodge, or a Cadillac, etc.
Cuba is the only place in the world where these cars exist and in daily use with an estimated 60,000 of them still driving the roads today. Cuba is a must see for classic car buffs the world over.
They certainly don't build them like they use to!

+FRank London It's against the law to export these cars from Cuba.

Only one love bug spotted. There must have been an agreement ($$$$) with The USA and Cuba to prohibit importation of cars from other countries. (Before the 1959 embargo)

No, there was a trade embargo, so Cubans couldn't get new cars made after 1959. Until the soviet union of course came to help and sold them Lada's

@@PU8698 i meant to say before the 1959 embargo, there must have been such a deal to only allow US cars into Cuba.

@@pressureworks well before 1959 most cars were American in Cuba, because European and Japanese car manufacturers didn't start exporting cars in mass numbers to the Americas until the 70's(some richer people imported some themselves before that).
So the real reason was that the USA was really close to Cuba( easy to export cars) and many Americans used to live there before 1959 and they had imported their own cars there. After they left, the cars stayed there.
