    Audrey Kathleen Ruston (according to Google) was born in Ixelles, Belgium to a Dutch Baroness and an English businessman. She spoke six languages, which were Dutch, English, French, Italian, Spanish, and German. Originally, she wanted to be a professional Ballet Dancer, however, when the Nazi party took power in Holland (where she was living in 1940), she had to give up that dream. Instead, as a teenager, she supported the Dutch Resistance by raising money and delivering secret messages. It was during this time that she became extremely malnourished, which affected her all throughout her life, causing her to be very thin. Later in life, she began her Humanitarian "career" and was awarded several awards, including, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award; as well as being honoured with a statue at UNICEF's New York headquarters, which is named "The Spirit of Audrey". So, she was a very interesting and talented person!

    Ok, THIS was actually super fascinating!! Because I had no idea there was a 50’s phrasing! And seeing this was also cool, thanks for doing this

      Thank you !! Yes they had a different phrasing back then. A little twist in the way they were talking.😊

      It might be the mid Atlantic accent which was a bridge between American and British. Right? There’s a fascinating documentary somewhere about it. Actors trained to speak it bc it would be easy for both American and British audiences. I may need to look for that documentary again to refresh my mind.

    Great video! Audrey was in a French movie at the start of her career, called 'Nous irons à Monte Carlo' (1951). It's available on RUclips!

    The “50’s” accent you’re speaking of was also common with English speaking actors post WW2. In the US actors were taught to speak with a “Transatlantic accent”, and it was more of a fancy kind of British accent, so dropping the r’s at the end of words, and such. Obviously it’s not a thing now but it explains why actors sounded different back then.

      Frasier and Niles in the sitcom Frasier maintained such an accent, which made them sound much more posh than the actual British character.

    One of her first films, in the late 1940s, was made in both English and French. She acted in both versions, speaking both languages. The English title is "Monte Carlo Baby", as I remember.

    She was discovered by Colette (while in Monaco, shooting a film) -- and her first major role was Gigi. Then, her Hollywood career took over after WWII. Her mother was Dutch aristocracy, I believe, and her father was English, but was born in Belgium and abandoned by her father when she was young, during the war. She initially intended to be a dancer, but she and her mother went into hiding during the war, and she nearly starved to death (she spoke, at one time, of living on cooked tulip bulbs), which had a long-term effect on her bones, ending her dance career early. Luckily, she made it in film, because she was truly beautiful and graceful -- like a little deer. We don't have anyone like her these days. She was unique.

    I have always thought of Audrey Hepburn as a French woman but always in American films where she scored by being different to the usual Hollywood star. Hollywood was much more commercially successful, I think, and with her ambitious mother behind her she was steered into the Hollywod direction to make up for the huge financial losses they experienced during WW2. I too love Aundrey Hepburn along with the rest of the world.
    As a ex-pat living in France, I love your channel.

    French used to sound so much more beautiful in the fifties! With the tapped and rolled r's instead of the modern throaty ones!

      @@charles1413 I know it isn't that throaty (french girlfriend shh), I just think the rolled and tapped r's French once shared with other romance languages sounded much better.

    • @BaileyDerby
      @BaileyDerby 4 года назад +5

      No way, I love the modern French R. It’s more nuanced and particular to French. Plus it’s difficult to master, so when you do it’s very rewarding as a French learner!

    • @cigh7445
      @cigh7445 4 года назад +1

      @@BaileyDerby I disagree, it's the French equivalent of the loss of middle word rhoticity which spread from RP English into general English (in England). A posh innovation of the bourgeois that ended up everywhere due to it's perceived status in the unconscious minds of the people.

    Pour expliquer la faute d'Audrey avec le verbe" commencer" au passé composé, il faut savoir qu'en Néerlandais pour ce verbe on utilise l'auxiliaire être et non l'auxiliaire avoir, "Ik ben begonnen" et non pas " ik heb begonnen". Le Néerlandais étant sa langue maternelle, Audrey utilise naturellement l'auxiliaire être.

    Apart from her English: Ms Hepburn's French was very, very good and she also spoke German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish. So a few mistakes here and there were to be expected, of course.
    The only English-speaking actress whose French is not only perfect but sounds effortlessly "native" is Jodie Foster. As you yourself have discovered!
    I believe she attended theFrench lycée in LA. But there must have been more than that for her to be that good !

    Her father was English and her mother was Dutch. As a child she lived in England, and when World War II started she moved with her mother to the Netherlands, where she had to pretend she had no connection to England while the Nazis were occupying the country. After the war she moved back to Britain, then quickly achieved success in Hollywood, so she made movies in English. In her later life she lived in Italy and if you listen to interviews she did then, in English, you can tell she was no longer as comfortable speaking it and had forgotten some of it.
