Monster designs like this often look goofy but they really really really nailed it with the fishing hamlet. They look disturbing when thinking about how they where human once.
Unlike all other Souls games where the enemies have clearly gone insane, then impression I always got from these guys is that they’re just protecting their home and want you to leave.

It never ceases to amaze me how good is Fromsoft at designing creatures and modeling them, lighting them properly and setting the mood for everything. When you see the low detail hidden in those models is amazing how it all works together.
The snail women look near identical to the corpse of Kos. Of course, Kos has been split in half down her belly so it’s hard to see at first glance. I wonder what she used to look like… I imagine identical to the snail women. A video of them side by side would be interesting.

@@PierceArner Oh, I meant the hunters ripping eyes out of people's heads when they raided the village. I think the description of Accursed Brew talks about it. Insight is literally eyes on the inside- when you see them on the outside, that probably means they can't hold any more on the inside. I'd expect someone with arcane abilities to have most if not all of their insight actually inside their head.
@@luna7157 Yeah, but the Fishmen Mages don't look like they had their eyes torn out since it doesn't seem scarred, but more like they just don't have any. A lot of high Insight creatures are covered in visible eyes, like the Winter Lantern, so that the multiple eyes are a visible part of the design. Even the Clocktower Patients seem like their eyes have just been obscured by their heads swelling up.

Like they’re just weird deformed people trying to scratch out a living whilst being persecuted and abused by the cruel healing church that just sees them as a means to an end. You can just tell how much they have suffered. They just wanted to be left in peace but outsiders came and uprooted everything. “Mother is gone, her baby taken”
Hell, they weren't even deformed at first. They used to be literal humans worshipping Kos until the Healing Church and Byrgenwyrth Scholars came and destroyed their home. I think Kos made them deformed while keeping their sanity to show the sadness and state of horror the fishing hamlet people were in after the attack. Maybe she never even meant to deform them in the first place, instead it being an accidental side effect of the curse she placed upon the hunters.
There's also the distinct possibility that the villagers of the Fishing Hamlet were never mutated in the first place, given that the Hunter's Nightmare doesn't exactly follow real-world logic, like Laurence's human skull existing despite the fact that he's a beast, or how Baby Mergo is stillborn in the real world but conscious in the Nightmare of Mensis. The villagers being piscine could just be a manifestation of the Nightmare.
stunning character design. they look as if they've been transformed as a result of exposure to billions of immortal cells of sea life floating in the water, replacing their own flesh over thousands of centuries, maybe millennia.
Take into the fact that this was all because the humans of the hamlet were experimented on, after Mother Kos was already dead prior to showing up on shore, and it kinda makes you feel terrible for them. Like you’re ending their experimented life & putting them out of their misery. Willem had the right idea, but he was a real scumbag using the residents of the Fishing Hamlet as an example of finding “eyes on the inside.”
Given the nature of the Eldritch, their transformation probably only took a few years or decades, depending on how much time passed between Kos washing up on shore and the night of the hunt

Gehrman wants to be freed from the nightmare, but knows fully well that he cannot be freed, so he has hunters who have yet to be forever bound to the dream do the work for him since he cannot leave himself. Laurence, Willem, and Ludwig all lost their sanity long ago, no longer aware of their own torment. It's all rather tragically ironic, the three people most responsible for the slaughter of the hamlet people eventually grew comfortable and oblivious to Kos's curse, while the two people who felt the most guilty of the sin continue to be aware of their own suffering, no sign of ever being freed of it.

The Snailwomen look like they are melting the frontal shot on the Fishdog Face is nightmare fuel, there is just something about the arrangement of the eyes and the widened jaw not the most abhorrent looking fish dog design as I would say Sekiro takes the Crown on that one but still
I've just now clicked that these were also the basis for the mudmen in ER. I know people moan about the reuse of various assets in that game but I personally don't mind it, they'd a lot going on and as I see it they were being smart to lessen the pipeline of development.
It’s crazy how you can tell the design of the omens was sort of inspired by these fisherman. Especially with the lore of how omens having their horns cut down, which looks very similar to the barnacles on the Hamlets inhabitants.

The theories are it's got something to do with kos. The villagers appear to be conducting something really only seen in Japan called whale worship. Where beached whales are worshipped. Add in the cosmic horror angle and either kos blessing or all the parasites they seem to be cultivating are altering the villagers

If Ebrietas caused the Yharnam beast plague because of blood ministry and the healing church, what happened at the hamlet for Kos to cause the fish plague?
